A lesson in how a great pianist can give a great performance whatever the circumstances; the conductor and orchestra aren’t with him very much but he makes no fuss about that and delivers nonetheless; he’s seen and heard them all and probably had far worse in his career. He’s probably more forgiving than the RUclips critics; he knows how hard it is; one of the things that made him such a sublime player was his ability to play so well was his lack of hubris-Rubenstein knew how right his own critics were about the wrong notes he often played were!

Something seems to go seriously awry in the orchestral ensemble following 8'35 - they end up at last a beat out with Rubinstein at the end of the climactic phrase. And the end off the first movement is almost a catastrophe - the conductor seems at fault, his tempi are too elastic and the ensemble with the soloist falls apart. Some of the audience booing at the end seems to sum it all up...

Around 35:30, the very end of the last movement, it seems as if Rubinstein drops a beat himself, so that there is a similar raggedness there. Nonetheless, I'm very grateful to Luca Chierici for posting this video -- every Rubinstein performance has some wonderful aspects.

I counted more than 180 audible mistakes( to you , listeners , are you deaf , too ? ....what the hell is going on here ? the orchestra is sounding awful and the pianist is completely deaf, no rhythm. if the conductor was stupid then why did Rubinstein accept to play anyway ?if Tchaicovsky had attended the CONCERT he would have had a heart attack, pretty sure about it . shame on them , a disaster throughout the concert . being old doesn't spare you from serious criticism .
