  • 1½ minute clip rescued from near being disposed. Cleaned and enhanced as much as possible this film shows the City of Pittsburgh in late 1926 or early 1927. The film date is not 100% certain but its not hard to narrow it down as the OLD 6th street bridge is visible and the North Side gas takes before the explosion. Among the scenes we see the first Point bridge built in 1877 and replaced in 1927 (another clue!). Stern wheel steamer with a single barge and smoke waffling though the air. Not a single sunbather or Frisbee thrower, to be seen anywhere. It was AMERICA'S WORKSHOP as someone coined many years ago, and indeed it was. People were going places, TO WORK, as automobiles and public transportation can be seen. This short clip may just give you a glimpse of what life was like in Pittsburgh, nearly 100 years ago. If you recognize something, please leave a comment.

The original 6th Street Bridge, the Point Bridge, all of the smoke from the P&LERR Yard...and WHOA, the gas storage tank that almost took out all of the North Side when it exploded! Man, it was huge!
