  • After doing some (really bad) cow calling (with a diaphragm call) while chasing a herd bull in this long river valley we got an unexpected response from this elk calf. She came running in! This may be the best audio/video of a lost elk calf sound on the Internet. Thanks to everyone or making this our number one posting. Give this call a try next time you're in elk country and in the right situation.

Thanks for this; we weren't 100% whether we were hearing an elk/deer or a mountain lion. This cleared it up immediately lol

EnigmaticRPG the sounds cow, calves and bulls make that are non-standard are what I try to capture. It’s not every day you hear a lost calf or bark or bull whine. Those sounds can be intriguing.

I love that this little cutie got a reply from the bull you were chasing. I'm trying to learn how to calf call

Calf calls can be very productive as both cows and bulls may respond.

Heard this today as an elk herd left a clear cut and headed into the woods. I thought - why are the birds mad at the elk? Then I began to suspect the baby elk. Thanks for the confirmation.

Thanks for this , I feel like elk really respond to calf sounds . Paternal instincts I guess .

Points West Outdoors I do more calf sounds these days and the cows are more vocal with me. And I’m terrible at calling. If I can be believable then I get better responses.

@@elkheaven2151 that's the route I'm going as we'll . Satelite bulls and cows respond real good to the calf sounds, almost in a protective manner . If the cows come in the herd bull shouldn't be far behind or a satellite bull is still something to hang a tag on .

I was playing with calf calls last season trying to draw in a cow (cows are legal in archery season where I live in NW Mt)
Had a sudden realization that the cows I was talking to had gone silent, I was in a huckleberry patch, and I sounded like a lost happy meal.
The hair on my neck went up. Started making loud people noise, pulled my pistol, and hiked out quickly.
In retrospect pretty stupid behavior in G Bear county…. I know better. Tunnel vision in the chase
When you find the elk around here you usually find the predators as well. Shit can get real pretty fast

That was the herd bull bugling a ways off in the background at the end of this clip. Likely his cows were moving because this calf went looking for the sound she heard and was so vocal. So the bull was trying to keep his harem together and getting frustrated as they were moving. We all know the lead cow is in charge. Not the bull.

probably assuming that bull elk must be big cause of its low call

Because moose and elk are deer, male moose and elk are more correctly called stags, female moose and elk are more called does, and baby moose and elk are called fawns.
