- THIS FIG ROOTING METHOD WORKS. DON'T OVER THINK IT. No gnats, no moisture issues, no death by transplant shock. Other methods may work, but this is the BEST method because it is simpler and you avoid the PITFALLS of other methods. Water method is too long. Fig Pop method has transplant shock/death issues. Almost every other method had gnats killing the cuttings. And, without the plastic wrap, other methods are tricky to water & keep in moisture.

How many cuttings are you rooting this winter????
I'm rooting 9 varieties thus year. Some have multiple cuttings. No more than 20 cuttings for rooting indoors.
twenty five cuttings....10 purchased, rest from my own in-ground varieties
Just ordered cuttings for 2x Smith, 2x Cavaliere, 2x I-258, 2x Black Madeira KK from Off The Beaten Path Nursery to grow in the PNW in containers with a greenhouse. Seeing variations on how different folks root their fig cuttings is interesting. You have outlined the most involved fig-rooting process I've ever seen. Thanks for the timely guide!

Hi all Adam here 😊 I have just put down 17 fig cuttings down in my garage I have great set up with heat matts insulation under my heat mats and large black 100 litre black storage container they are nicely place in cosy 🤣 exactly how you have done it here , heat matts temperature 26c had taken me a good 3 hours to to complete this task so happy my cuttings are down ,our weather at home temp around 14c to 24 c I will give an update in 4 weeks time😊🇦🇺 Brisbane Queensland Australia
Adam here 🇦🇺😊 I now have 57 cuttings rooting now the first 21 and half are starting to leaf and the other bud swelling with green showing its been 24 days now with the first Bach down I still have bottom heat and now I have 2x Spider farmer SF1000 grow light set at 50 % for 12 hours a day now also spider farmer fan blowing air on the just keep air moving Im so excited my first attempt at rooting fig cutting here at Brisbane QLD Australia 🇦🇺 And big thanks to you Notorious for the solid advise after about another 2 weeks ill move the first lot outside in the mini green house I brought 😊😃😁😆

Wow! Your method works very well. 15/16 rooted and now leafing (my personal best). Only thing I did differently was to use dilute gnatrol in the water initially when wetting the hp promix and I did 1/6 ratio with the water just to err on dryer side. Thanks! Now hopefully I can make the transition to outdoors soon without killing them.

I’m glad I saw this. I had seen another RUclipsr mention the 5 to 1 ratio but I did it by weight not volume. By volume makes much more sense now that I think about it because coco coir is a lot lighter than water. Had 0% success rate doing it by weight. Even I thought it was just too dry but went with it anyways. I will give 5/1 ratio by volume a try. Thanks

Your system is working very well to this point. All of the cuttings have good growth in the tree pots, and ive been liquid feeding as specified. They are still under artificial light, but plan on introducing them to a guarded outdoor/modified green house transition to harden off Between April 3 and frost free date of 5/ 15. Do you have any advice about or during this transition period other than protecting them from extreme dips in temperature. will i need to pot up from the tree pots. Do you plan a follow up video for this transition. THANKS and Great Job with the process.

Hoping to have success with rooting some cuttings and have my first fig trees this coming year. Currently I have 16 cuttings but think I’ve already lost several. Greenhouse Megastore sells the tree pots in 16 count.

Update from Adam 🇦🇺 all my cutting have leafed so they are outside in my mini green house now no heat matts no grow lights its 19 degrees Celsius here in Queensland and it winter , I decided to move out because my figs out side are starting to leaf we don't really have cold winters being Sunny sub tropical beautiful Brisbane Australia an I haven't lost any figs all are going really well and this was my first time rooting figs

I love your videos! Great information. I'm guessing I will end up with more than 100 cuttings. Some are still in the refrigerator drawer, and I have planted about 75 figpops so far.
I'm not a figpop fan b/c of the risk of transplant shock. But if you have a solid, reliable method of up potting them, and don't lose any at that stage, then you're golden!
@@thenotoriousfig most people uppot too early... let the figpop fill up the container with roots before uppotting. That's why I like clear containers to see the progress.

I prefer reused/washed clear cups from coffee shops and gas stations. Being able to see roots (or not) and moisture condensation is really helpful. You can also transplant to common, used 1-2 gallon black pots easily - that tall grow pot will force you into 5 gal right away IMO.

Thanks, very clear instructions. I feel this provides a great propagating environment. In your previous video, you specified a 4x9 tree pot. In this video it looks like the same size pot. The link you shared from amazon shows a 12" tree pot. I may have missed it. But is it a 9" pot. Thanks

sorry answering late, but I up pot when I see that the roots keep the soil in place and the leaves are about 2ft tall.
Actually, I find that doing a ratio of 1 part water to 10 parts dry Promix works even better! It does not seem like it’s enough water, but it is more than enough for 5 weeks. Try it if you get more rot than you want. I do some other stuff that’s different too and can give my written procedure by DM if you like. GL!
Interesting! Is that by 1:10 ratio measured by weight or by volume? (And if by volume, how to you measure the Promix? Do you fluff it up first and then put it in the measuring cup?)
Ok, got them to the 2month mark, lots of leaves up top and white roots poking out up top and at bottom. So then transitioned to window sill, but started to wilt. I just bottom water per weight only. I took the fig out of treepot and see smaller brown roots- did i use too much water? Too little? Too concentrated fertilizer or just didn’t adjust/account for humidity changes? I mean the HP promix at bottom always appears moist. Will post on ourfigs too.

I love your channel and it is my first time rooting cuttings, i followed all the steps from your turtorial outside of the last step and thaths the plastic bags around the pots, the bags got delayed for some reason and i have only just recieved them however i already started all the cuttings 6 weeks ago since i did not want to keep them stored for to long, in those 6 weeks a lot of green growth had happend after week 3-4 some cuttings have rotted away unfortanely but i seem to have most problembs keeping the pots at a good moisture level the top and bottom are drying out quickly because of the led battens and heating math.
Could i still save the remaining once by getting the pots to the perfect weight thaths 650 grams for me and then using the bags around them. I do have a lot of green growth going on aleady cuttings are 6 weeks in the set up.

Once you have roots out the bottom and also leafed out on top, you can remove the heat. Or in this cold temps, you can keep the heat at 75, so it's optimal growing conditions. If you remove the heat, it'll slow a bit.
excellent, video when is the exact time to fertilize since the substrate is inert
not until you start the water, which is started around the 4-5 week if you have growth. When you do it very diluted, you can always be using fertilizer.
Great vid Can i do this in summer i received some cuttings that took some time in the shipping and should i sock these cuttings in water because they were in shipping for atleast 7 days

If you can get Promix HP, then get it. Lots of people say rooting figs is easy. But that's not the point. I don't want to be an expert at doing it the hard way, I want the most reliable method. And this is it.
One more question. The bug zapper thingy, that you have listed, does it do a good job for you??
I’d say good enough but you want to have several layers of attack. With the bagged method tho, you have few gnats. Also gnatrol is good to use when watering other infested plants.
60 of which 25 are different cuttings. I have always used promix BX but never at your ratio. Will be using your ratio now I like it. What is Mykos as to what is already in the BX.
the Mykos is just more mychorizae. Extra but unnecessary step.
How many/how much roots do you need to pot this and then in what size of pot?
Why you need heat map? Is it fine when the room is 26 degree?
With the 5:1 ratio of water to promix, do you still add the Jack’s 20-20-20 to the water before mixing into the promix? Keep up the great work 🤙🏼
Not on the initial watering. You could do 1/8 or 1/16 strength fertilizer on that initial watering. You'd want that very weak.

I am curious how you would modify the initial steps, if you are transporting cuttings? Let's say I am out of town and buy some cuttings - should I do the washing and bleach there, or wait until I get home? Assuming a total travel time of about 24 hours by car, what's the best method for transporting? Just put them in a ziploc bag with a moist paper towel? Then let them air dry and continue with step 3 in your video? Thanks in advance!
in a refrigerator the cutting sweat, so never add damp paper towel when they are in fridge. As far as travel, if they're clean leaving and when you arrive they are still dry, then no additional cleaning necessary.

For the large container that holds all of the treepots... does it matter what height it is? Do you use a lid/cover for that large container?
it's just for convenience. whatever works for you. and no, I don't cover it. I want the trees acclimated to the room relative humidity

Nothing covering. Not needed. I would not do that.
Say I do your method and get crazy roots in my bass favorite fig, but no leafing out, but rooted back in 1/23/24, should I put it in light now even though no budding out yet?
Yes light to induce budding, but block direct sunlight from heating up the pots
Do you have to have the cuttings go dormant for a period of time before you root?
by the time you get the cuttings, they were either cut while the tree was dormant or the tree was not yet dormant. So once the cuttings are in your hands, you can root them. Watch my Cuttings Beware video for more explanation. Thanks
Did you cut both ends of the cuttings or just the tops?
I cut the bottoms only. I wrap the tops where it'll be above the soil.
I have one question, i basically followed all the steps on my first 60 cuttings but since i had to clean and air dry so many of them by the time they were all dry i had to go and sleep so i packaged them again put them in my crisp drawer but the next they some cuttings seemed a bit moist again, it was not visible in the form of condensation or water drops but more the colour of the cutting gave it away, but instead of air drying them again i decided to move foward and tape them, cut the bottoms, lay in rooting hormone and then op potted now my one question is can i get molt issuses underneath the tape? And then should i leave it as it is or take the cuttings out let them air dry and restart them? Only been 2 days now so i cant imagine roots alrdy formed.
I'd let them go at this point. All these measures are to reduce the chances of mold, etc. taking over before the roots do. It's just one factor.

Hello, how many hours of light do fig cuttings need and what is the lighting intensity on a scale lux?
Once the cuttings are rooted and leafing out, I give them all day light. But it's gradual for 10-14 days, then it's like they are just getting full day's light.
What is the best temperature for rooting 20C or 25C ?

I do both. I do if I remember, but I still get same results either way.
When does the grafting tape get taken off? Do the leaves start growing through the tape? Totally new to this method. Also what if I get a cutting that is topped with wax at both ends? Cut the bottom and leave the top? Does the tape replace wax, are they used interchangeably?
The wax should keep moisture from evaporating. I think you’re good to go!

I eventually get them out of the bags when they lighten up and I'm watering.
@@thenotoriousfig so far I’m 90% success on 20 cuttings. I’m afraid of the gnats since I grow other plants in the room. I see 1 from time to time but only a few on the yellow stickies. That’s why I was wanting to keep them in the bags as long as possible but water and feed them at the same time.
Its been 3 weeks and I haven seen any leaf growth. How am I supposed to know its not rotten? Thank you.
Just be patient and stay the course.
Okay, I see part where you cut off the bottom till you get clean green end. So only the bottom, not the top of the cutting. Just paraffin wrap on the top.

Tried this method on some cuttings near the end of December. One of them has produced a long and leggy growth. What should I do at this point and is there something that I did for this to happen?

Do you have them w bottom heat? They should feel the same weight as when you started. If you gently jiggle the cutting can you feel resistance? if so, that's roots. if not, then prob not rooted. Sacrifice one to check it out, i.e., gently dump one out and see what's up. maybe too wet/dry or bad cuttings.

I’m afraid to check one lol due to having way too much invested into these cuttings from Ross the Fig Boss. They are definitely not dry and feel the same so far. Ok so I pulled 3 out of the pots and nothing happing yet. The soil is moist but not wet for sure no signs of roots even starting yet. I have a few small buds trying to grow and I’m worried because there are no roots yet. Any advice?

I noticed you did not scrape the bottom of the cuttings in this version. Any specific reason?
Yes, you can scrape them. I think I put a text note somewhere in the video saying that. I usually scrape them about half the time with same results.

Roots on #6. 100%. I think the key factor with your rooting method is control of moisture. 5 to 1 ratio is, in my opinion, critical and has the biggest impact. One question. When I up pot my cuttings, do you recommend adding Mykos Mycorrhizal to the soil? Thanks again for sharing your expertice and making this video.

@@EXTREMERC416 oh, well you want the bottom of the soil to be about 78F, so you can insert it into the bottom of one of the pots. Either way, be sure to experiment with different placement to get the temp you want. I've had the probe placed incorrectly and the temps were not warm enough. So check on it. If the prob in on the top of the soil, the heat mat will be on 24/7 and cook the cuttings trying to get the probe warm enough.
I put it at the bottom but the rest pf the soil above 2 inches is like 72f with my thermometer or cooler. Im trying different technique to heat up the box itself to be around 78F so everything can be at 78F@@thenotoriousfig
@@EXTREMERC416 you can try that but I don't think it's necessary. plus the plastic bags keep the moisture locked in and I think it's plenty.
Too complicated & not cost effective-Figs are easy to root..
