Always an entertaining session on this channel. I wish I had a boss like you. I worked in a garden center with very very few people who were excited about plants and nature. I have to visit garden centers and nurseries weekly and most owners, managers and employees don't know and don't care to learn more.
I have had great luck growing fig cuttings into 7 foot tall trees. Waith your help, I have had a bumper crop of figs after I tip pruned the trees this last spring and pruned 2 to 3 feet off the overgrown figs. Been growing them in 5-gallon buckets due to the cold winters here and bring them into my basement under full spectrum lights. Should have 15 to 20 pounds of figs this fall!!! hopefully the figs will begin to branch and form a better scaffolding and larger fruit production!! Thanks again for your informative videos
Hey Mike this was awesome! Thank you for showing us the possibilities of rooting summer figs. Super helpful, when I got some cuttings earlier this March, I couldn’t find any info on if rooting was possible during growing season, so I gave it a go and tried it myself this year on some cuttings I started rooting in a bag with a wet paper towel wrapped around the lower stems. It’s true they do work during summer. I had a lower percentage taking root one transferee to soil (presuming from transplant shock) but they still worked. I love your dedication to the science behind it, thank you for being so positive all the time!
I love your videos and how enthusiastic you are about what you do. My mouth dropped open when you said the other figs went to the compost heap. Poor babies. I can't wait to try this method. Thanks Mike
I am in Knoxville, Tennessee. My fig tree was 10 feet tall and 10 feet in diameter, and it froze this past winter. Then bugs got in and finished killing it. Hey Man, we really appreciate what you showed us on this Video. I felt bad for not making the slits at the ends, but seeing that it did not matter, made me feel much better. I brought some Fig cuttings from my dad's house that we have been enjoying for decades, and I can not wait to see the results. rooting powder and some water and you made it simple and to the point. I will post pictures of the before and after. God Bless
Guess what?? I did it too... rooted fig tip cuttings. You just have to use rooting hormone, root riot plugs and a humidity dome... That's it and in two weeks without fail it has roots.... by the third week, you can pot them up and watch them grow... keep under humidity for a little while longer gradually weaning them off and you've got a new tree.. I have done it successfully 6 times now. T works like a charm.. And thanks for sharing Dan's work with us. That is the sign of a true professional...
Lol it’s funny that u made this video because earlier this summer my grandmother and I planted a fig tree that I had grown out in the yard. It’s a white Marseille and it was the only one I had of that variety. Well when we went to plant it I had no choice but to cut a couple of branches off. They were still green but I didn’t want to waste them just in case something happened to the tree so I went ahead and planted 1 then put the other 2 cuttings in the fridge for about a week then I planted them. It wasn’t 3 weeks until all of them had big ole leaves and new green branches of they’re own!! It’s crazy how fast they rooted and are still growing compared to the usual brown cuttings!! I knew that it wouldn’t hurt for me to try and root them especially since I wouldn’t have any if something happened to the tree we planted. Luckily it’s doing great too, so it all worked out thankfully!! Also something I think is very cool is that as they’re growing they are lignifying!! Now if only I could be as lucky with my lavender which I can’t seem to keep healthy!! 😂
I decided to do an experiment this year. I started taking fig cuttings for rooting on October 1st (central Texas), green and hardwood cuttings and several air-layers). It's October 15th now and every single cuttings (18) have put out leaves the size of a half dollar or larger. I will check the air-layers and cuttings for roots next week. Based on how fast these have budded out, I expect good roots. I use a large clear plastic container as a green house to hold the humidity. Humidity is key to success. I did use aspirin and root hormone. I have a small orchard and plan to have 50 trees producing next year. My largest air-layer is on a 1" diameter branch. A 2nd experiment uses water bottles with the tops cut off and a hole in the bottom in a clear plastic bag for a humidity chamber. This allows my to pack a lot of cuttings in a small area (15). All of these are also budding out after 8 days. BTW: I have not had a single green or hardwood cutting fail using this method.
I tried this with a heavily overgrown fig tree a friend in Baltimore has. Two and a half weeks later we have growth on all nine cuttings. No rooting hormone. Just cut up and shoved in used dirt from last year. Segments come from this year as well as the last three years. Thanks for the confidence to ignore the sites that said this wouldn't work.
I’m SO glad I’ve found this video!! I have a fig tree that I need to cut down due to location. It hasn’t fruited in two years and I thought it was dead but it’s not! I took hella cuttings from it and was wondering if I could do this and be successful! I have 1-3 year growth that I’m going to chop up and pot up!! I love your enthusiasm bc that’s how I feel too!!
Out of all your videos I've seen the fig vids are my favorite. I just wish I could keep figs here, in the last 5 years someone stole my 4 potted figs, I think for the nice pots they were in. The next figs I get are going in the cheapest and ugliest pots I can find.
Yes, they're the best kind of cuttings. I was thinking about you yesterday while propagating some figs. I think you would do better with the really fat cuttings because they are a bigger reservoir for holding moisture in them and not as fickle as the skinny cuttings.
I recently rooted 5 cole de dame noir from an online fig nursery and they all rooted beautifully despite our triple digit weather. I also rooted some from my in the ground fig tree and they also rooted.
Hey Man, we appreciate this Vedic as it opened my eyes to a lot of different new things and the slit lines you made made feel bad that I did not do when I planted my cuttings but you showed us that it was not necessary, I feel much better now, and we appreciate you sharing those results with us. you are AWESOME :)
So after watching your videos today, I cut my air layers and potted them up. Good root systems. Took all the wood I trimmed (3 varieties of figs) and set them to root. Thanks for the video!
I’m new to fig tree growing. I planted my first fig tree last year. When is the best time to prune fig trees and to grow cuttings? I was thinking maybe in the fall? I live in south Texas if that makes a difference. TIA
WOW!!! By 11 minutes into the video there's all that grOwth! I'm excited Mike! I have a friend with an old fig tree that grows the most delicious black figs unlike any other fig I've ever tasted! I covet that tree. I'm going to ask if I can have cuttings and I will do this. Thank You Mike for all your work and sharing! Stay Blessed. Wow! That was so generous of you to mention Dan Foster. Blessings all over You and Family!
Hi Mike, I am a vocational skills teacher in Oregon, and an obsessive gardener. Love your videos and your energy, which I believe will keep my students engaged. I have a student who wants to propagate her favorite apple tree, and I plan to have her watch your fig tree videos as they are the closest I can find on your channel. Do you ever do apples or plums?
Thanks so much, Kate, and I'm glad to hear that you enjoy the videos. I recommend grafting apples, although you can root them. I do have a video about grafting them: ruclips.net/video/AEWcib0GN_w/видео.html Good luck to your student!
The unions/joints (nodes) will generally be the site for both branching growth and root growth. The bottom of your cutting is right at a node site. This is likely the reason for the roots developing there as well as at the node just above (versus along the internode).
Hey Mike. My neighbor gave me some fig cutting and I was looking for a video to show me how to root them. Thank you. it is late in the season, so wish me luck. Thanks and take care
I live in an area with lots of fig trees everywhere but I don't have any. I went to a garden center to buy one and they were all in such bad shape because of the heatwave and neglect but were still selling for 28 euros ! NOW I'm off to the field with some secateurs and will try to make some. I potted up some rose cuttings after seeing your video but I didn't protect them from the sun and heat enough, I should have put them on the north side. I saved one which is doing great, thanks.
I don't know if you've ever noticed since I haven't heard you mention it in any of your videos (I actually haven't ever heard anyone mention it), but if you look at your cuttings when you take them you'll notice white dots all over the bark on some (definitely figs, willow, and mulberry)... all those dots can become roots... noticed that when I was rooting some stuff in water. You had one video where you pointed out some root initials but not sure you noticed they were all where there had been white dots on the bark when you cut it.
@MikeKincaid79 Guess I might have somehow missed where you point out the dots that are already there before you cut the branch from the tree... I'm sticking cuttings as bonsai starts and before I take the cuttings I look for a spot where those dots are failrly even around the whole way and dense for a better chance at a good radial rootbase from the start...
It is a crazy thing that you put out a video about figs. We have a Brown Turkey Fig tree that has about 10 new limbs at the base. We are going to try propagating them. Thanks for sharing your information. Rhonda
I am brand new to fig cuttings. I decided to grow the roots in water, then transfer into pots. Because I just needed to see the roots start growing. Also. I didnt know that “green” or knewer cuttings is not the usual parts people cut to grow. So I have 3 greenish cuttings with roots growing. I am super excited about if. The type of fig is LSU Gold. They are soooo delicious.
MIKE just subscribed to DAN,s channel,, thanks for the tips, the way DAN did his cuttings i think that would work also for house plant cuttings,,, nothing more exciting then to expierment with plants
Last week I ordered 6 Strawberry Verte cuttings. They were cut just before shipping. Doing the fig pop method, I started seeing green the next day. 5 or 6 days in now, one has a leaf the size of a quarter and all the others are starting to open. Keeping them outside in a greenhouse. Going to be a frost tonight so they are coming inside. Amazing growth.
Maybe Mike it was that the slices didn’t pass through the Cambian layer. That’s why those slices look like they’re healing, except for the ones that actually cut past the cambium layer. Mike, I do like your show very much because the information you provided has helped me to get my own fig cuttings started. I was able to root cuttings the size that you’re doing currently or I should say demonstrating currently. Thank you again for all content that you share.
I have 4 out of 5 fig twigs that busted out with the leaves and two of them are well established with branch off activity and huge leaves going on now. #5 has no sign of budding yet but I'll not give up on it. I didn't slice the rooting ends of them or even use any Clonex root starter gel on any of them since I didn't have any last October when I started the project. I'm VERY happy with the results though. They are growing so fast now and I started giving them Monty's Plant Vantage Premium Growth (8/16/8) with every watering. What a fun time I had with this 'project' and it made my long and cold Rocky Mountain winter (8000+ feet in elevation) much more bearable, watching daily to see those tiny buds finally turn green. Chicago Hardy variety.
I just love your videos! Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and your passion and your love of the experiment to discover how things happen, how things can be done- and to share that for the benefit of others! Such a wonderful gift!!!! Thank you thank you.❤
i can't to see ya tomorrow on this youtube so i can watching you i love ya mike today i mowned my big back yard it was very hot to working hard my mom helps me some finshed up love David
You'll do just fine, Shannon! Don't be anybody but you and just do what you love. I watch plenty of channels where the guy or girl doesn't get as excited as I do and I love their channel all the same. Just be you.
Hey Mike. I have been watching you for a very long time. I have been trying to get the nerve to ask you about sending me some of your Japanese Maple seeds. I have fallen in love with this tree and I asked on facebook just like you said to for someone who has any Japanese Maple trees to either send me some or let me come get some in return for a little money or some work or some of the seedlings and so far nothing and it's been a month and a half. So I figured the only way I would ever get any was to ask the pro. I went out and bought a tent and a Marshydro grow light because of your review on it though I had to buy rhe one without a dimmer because the other one was out of my budget. Great videos. I could watch them all the time. In fact I kinda do. I am trying to start a Maple tree farm. Advice and info. as well as plants, cuttings and seed are more than welcome. Great show keep up the good work. Mark.
Thanks, Mark, glad you enjoy the videos. Unfortunately, I just don't have enough seeds to go around and I get hundreds of requests for them. Do you live in an area where people grow Japanese maples? If so, just knock on some doors and ask people if you can pick the seeds. If not, you might want to consider if they'll grow in your area. Have fun with the light and tent, I know you'll be happy with them.
I just successfully rooted some. I used sand, water bottles with drilled drainage holes, and I put them in a pan with a little water in it. I also propped up an open sandwich bag over the top. Probably took 2 months or so to root.
Wow, thanks for this video, love all your vids! I'm now excited to watch those Dans vids. This is my 2nd year growing a small amount of figs, so exciting!
I love your enthusiasm and it has got me going. I have 2 different kinds of pine trees propagating, and I have started my garden seeds inside, the problem is, growing season is about 2 months away! 😂 hahaha lol 🤣😂
You seem to be sprouting a root from your palm at @ 14:49. You are turning into a fig! Bury your hand for a few months and see if leaves come out somewhere up higher. Seriously though, this is great content and exactly what I needed and suspected. Nearby there is a 600 acre fig orchard that is very old, the trees are huge with base diameters over a foot. They look to be gearing up to bulldoze them all. Taking my shears on the next ride past!
This is funny. I never knew you could use hard wood. I've always only used first year growth, because that's what I was taught. I use root starter powder, stick them in a jar of water. Thank you for this knowledge. I'm going to try it your way. Ps. You have a much better success rate.
Glad you're learning from the video. I've been doing this almost 2 decades and have many videos for you to learn from. Welcome to the channel and have fun propagating plants!
Love watching your vids. Became a member of your page propagatinglikeapro. And i purchased my first hoop house last week for my bday next month and my wife bought me some hydrendras and a rodie today.
I just saw that I didn't finish my comment....😂😂. I wanted to say that I couldn't wait until the end of the video ( that is way I said that is the middle of the video). Lol
Depends on the fig tree and your climate. If you're in a cold climate then you'll want to protect it for a few years and grow a nice thick stalk and plenty of roots before planting outdoors. Don't put directly into hot sun in the middle of summer. Wait until spring and let the tree acclimate.
I have rooted many cuttings, but had never thought about rooting a fig cutting. I have a tree/bush back home (given to me by a relative, so "sentimental" value) and I want to try to root some cuttings.
Figs need a lot of fertilizer through the growing season and and almost constant supply of moisture. If you do that the first year, the plant will vigorously produce figs the following year. That's my experience anyway.
@@MikeKincaid79 I have not fertilized...this is Year 4 as it is in the ground and not in a plant. It is covered in the Michigan winter months and pop promptly comes back w new growth but no figs... What kind of fertilizer plz
Mary Ann Scholl Hi Mary Ann. I have the same problem that you do. My fig is in the ground and has beautiful leaves every year but no figs. I also have never fertilized. Anyone who has taken a cutting from this fig tree gets huge figs when they grow it. I asked the New York Botanical Garden for help and they suggested an 8-8-8 fertilizer. I will try this next Spring. Good luck to both of us. Thanks for the video Mike.
I watered these cuttings every time I watered the rest of my plants in the nursery, which started out as once a week in the spring and turned into every other day in the summer.
All that being said, my medium drains very well and dries out quickly. If you're using potting soil then you would water much less frequently. Instead of trying to find a number for how often to water, just water based on how dry the soil is.
Years ago, a town I lived in bulldozed a spectacular, OLD fig tree to pave a parking lot!! I was SICK when I found its remains. The figs would be fist sized and DELICIOUS!! I wish I'd had the CHANCE to root it before its destruction!!!! :'(
Oh my gosh I just been given fig tree cuttings I found your video and its awesome but I went to look for the rooting powder on the description link and its not available. I'm devastated. Please.... what is another good rooting powder or can I use the gel that you have listed? I have my figs in water for now cus I'm kinda flying blind so any help will be greatly appreciated! I'm subbed from just this one video. Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Any rooting hormone will work for figs. Many times you can find that your local nursery is selling small bottles of rooting powder. Other hormones you may want to try are Dip-n-grow (one of my favorites), root tone, clonex. Those are just a few but all work well. You can also find Hormodin #3 at Greenhousemegastore.com
I've somehow managed to root cuttings several times, entirely without rooting hormone. Also didn't remember to cover them to preserve humidity. I just didn't know better. 😅
Congratulations....this is a great video and the little fig trees are beautiful. What exactly is the soil, and do you have suggestions as to how we can get something similar?
It's just finely ground fir tree back that people use for mulch around here. You can use anything that drains well and holds a little moisture but is relatively inert.
Depends on the weather and the medium you have them in but I watered these about every other day. Not necessary though. You could probably water once a week or less depending on weather.

Hey Mike. My neighbor gave me some fig cutting and I was looking for a video to show me how to root them. Thank you. it is late in the season, so wish me luck. Thanks and take care
You’re welcome Karen. Here’s a video about rooting figs in which I got my best results: ruclips.net/video/LymBdzprYJ4/видео.htmlsi=LxB9qMwGR6PqzO6a
I live in an area with lots of fig trees everywhere but I don't have any.
Yep, save that money and root your own!
You're smarter to making more add roots, let growing more and more plants
.good job, Mike!👍👍😉🪴🪴
Your excitement about the roots is over-the-top! I get it! It's a farmer thing. Non-farmers wouldn't understand. :)
They probably wouldn't but then it's my job to help infect them and get them excited.
Yes, they are root initials. I've never made a video just about that but have mentioned it in some videos.
Rhonda
Have fun with it!
Awesome! I don't have that variety yet but I hear most of the LSU figs are great.
@@MikeKincaid79 The LSU Gold is very good. It it huge too. Almost the size of a plum
MIKE just subscribed to DAN,s channel,, thanks for the tips, the way DAN did his cuttings i think that would work also for house plant cuttings,,, nothing more exciting then to expierment with plants
No problem. I was in the middle of filming this one when I stumbled across Dan's videos. Sure did poke a hole in my theory, lol.
Mike your information is helping everyone like me".Thanks again.
Do glad to hear that, Sanjana! Glad you enjoy the videos.
Great job. That’s a nice growing variety too. My in ground Strawberry Verte is vigorous.
No problem Jay! Glad you enjoy the videos and have had success with figs.
Great video and no need to apologize for the compost...Educational!
Thanks, Luis!
Wow!!! You really just helped me!! Thank you for sharing.
You hit the nail on the head with the winter project comment. Sure does brighten up the cold months.
@@MikeKincaid79 Thank you Mike, and thanks again for your well made, informative and up beat, funny videos. Keep 'em coming!
Thanks so good to know that one can root fig cuttings in summer
Phoenix AZ
I just love your videos! Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and your passion and your love of the experiment to discover how things happen, how things can be done- and to share that for the benefit of others! Such a wonderful gift!!!! Thank you thank you.❤
Thank you for such a kind comment, Melissa! I love making these videos for you.
The área where the leaf came off is called leaf scar fyi... love your videos!
I love the way you make your garden roots grow deep. Sambath in berthoud Colorado. Do figs grow in Colorado.
I'm not as familiar with the winter temps in Colorado but my figs survive 12 degree temps here. and grow beautifully every summer.
"Why are we struggling and suffering?"
Hilarious and made my day, thanks!
Haha, glad to entertain!
i can't to see ya tomorrow on this youtube so i can watching you i love ya mike today i mowned my big back yard it was very hot to working hard my mom helps me some finshed up love David
It may be a day or 2 but glad you're enjoying the vids.
I am actually eating a Brown Turkey Fig right now. So sweet!
Cool, sounds delicious.
How often do you water them during this process?
Nice method, thanks for share how to Summer Fig Tree Propagation, I 👍am still learning, thanks for share
You are very welcome
You are fantastic(oh regarding gardening that is).
Great Video Mike!
I have a fig that has branches in the way and needs to be pruned. Time to try some summer fig propagation.
There ya go, Steven! I'm doing some of the same around here right now.
I hope when I start my urban farming channel, that I can exude as much enthusiasm as you!
You'll do just fine, Shannon! Don't be anybody but you and just do what you love. I watch plenty of channels where the guy or girl doesn't get as excited as I do and I love their channel all the same. Just be you.
I have done several in the summer like that with no problems!
I love these figs!
@@MikeKincaid79 Me too.
Mike, you are da bomb! I love your fig videos! Who knew you could root in the summer?
Thanks! I even learned something this year when I saw Dan's videos!
I'm going out and chop up my fig plants right now 13th of Augustt the experiment is the fun part . I can buy fig newton's all day long
there ya go, haha
I'm surprised at the amount of leaf Dan Foster jeeps on his cutting
THANK YOU for your informative and FUN videos!! I've sent lots of folks to your page!!!!!
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it and am glad you enjoy the videos!
I learned so much from your fig cutting propagation, outstanding ,thanks a lot
I'm happy to hear that, Adeodato!
I just successfully rooted some. I used sand, water bottles with drilled drainage holes, and I put them in a pan with a little water in it. I also propped up an open sandwich bag over the top. Probably took 2 months or so to root.
Ahhh, the satisfaction of a job well done. Good on ya, Jonathan!
Yayyy!!! Exciting! I have2 fig trees, so Im going to do cuttings now!!Thankyou..Cheers from Australia..😁
Awesome! Have fun with it, Melanie.
Wow, thanks for this video, love all your vids! I'm now excited to watch those Dans vids. This is my 2nd year growing a small amount of figs, so exciting!
Figs are definitely fun and exciting to grow. Have fun growing and experimenting with them, Aimee!
Wow. Thankful for learning about this. Will take cuts from now on from trees that will be taken down in my city. Peace :)
Have fun!
I dont used the root hormone in my cuttings and always get to grow
Yeah, they don't really need it, just added insurance.
Hello how much do I water them and when ?
Depends on the time of year, temps, how well your medium drains, etc. Aim to keep the medium moist but not constantly saturated.
I love your enthusiasm and it has got me going. I have 2 different kinds of pine trees propagating, and I have started my garden seeds inside, the problem is, growing season is about 2 months away! 😂 hahaha lol 🤣😂
It's hard, we just want to get started but the weather is taking its time, lol.
Awesome cuttings! Super easy too, and I will probably go root cutting crazy outside soon. Thanks Mike.
Have fun, Darla!

WTFig is where it’s at! Thanks for your vids, Mike!
It's a great group!
Two year old fig 4 tears old maybe only 3? That that that older than that .yeah I know Dan foster you introduced me to him incredible
Love your energy mate. Thanks for this wonderful knowledge,
My pleasure!
Yes, go save some figs! Just a shame we don't know the varieties, but maybe you'll find a gem in there.
This was so helpful to me! Thankyou!
I'm a new subscriber!
You're welcome and thanks for subbing!
Awesome, Joseph. You're on your way!
Mike, nature doesn't need help! Cool! Its the middle of the video. Hugs
Sure doesn't.
I just saw that I didn't finish my comment....😂😂. I wanted to say that I couldn't wait until the end of the video ( that is way I said that is the middle of the video). Lol
Love your videos. Keep going man. Very good stuff.
Love your videos. When can the new fig tree go in the sun and in the ground?
Depends on the fig tree and your climate. If you're in a cold climate then you'll want to protect it for a few years and grow a nice thick stalk and plenty of roots before planting outdoors. Don't put directly into hot sun in the middle of summer. Wait until spring and let the tree acclimate.
I have rooted many cuttings, but had never thought about rooting a fig cutting. I have a tree/bush back home (given to me by a relative, so "sentimental" value) and I want to try to root some cuttings.
Sounds great! Have fun with it, Jimmy.
Well done!
Now the question....how do you get your plant to bear fruit?
Awesome video mate, you should try one without slice cutting to see how they root. Anyway, what is the soil mix you are using for rooting 😊
Good idea for a future video. I use finely ground fir tree bark for rooting.
Very easy to grow up fig trees, and very easy to make jam from their fruits.
“He FIGured it out”,- haha I see what you did there
He sure did, lol
I admire your FIGurative speech
Mike, how many times if any did you have to water the cuttings? Here in South Carolina it gets awfully hot & humid. Just curious. Thanks as always.
I was wondering this also. Did he have to keep a moist did you let it sit and dry out. We need to know these things lol.
Yeah, that's a bummer! Especially when it provided food for everyone. I guess that's the sound of progress.
Thank you, Mike. Great information.
You're very welcome!
I had a dog rip off a green end of new growth, I put it in soil a few weeks back, pretty sure it's growing.
Nice
Oh my gosh
I just been given fig tree cuttings
I found your video and its awesome but I went to look for the rooting powder on the description link and its not available.
I am going to do this thanks for showing me how to
Have fun, Julie!
thanks you Mike love David
Gorgeous juicy roots! 😍 Thanks for the education.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Instead od slicing, I scrape along two bottom sides of the cutting. And roots do tend to grow along the scraped wood.
Thanks for your experience. I do the same for my rhododendrons, just wanted to try something different here. I love experimenting with these figs.
Great video Mike.
Thanks, John!
@@MikeKincaid79 Hey Mike! Thank you for the video. Can I use seed starting mix for my cuttings? (If that’s all I have right now)
This was great Mike thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I think the cuts and slices releases some pressure from the lignified bark allowing it to swell faster.
That might be
Great video.....how often did water them?
Depends on the weather and the medium you have them in but I watered these about every other day. Not necessary though. You could probably water once a week or less depending on weather.
