I've seen comments on this subject before and honestly I think it could be a regional thing. Where I live everyone refers to car camping as any camping where you pack your gear in a car and drive to the campground. You can either sleep in your car or a tent and we still call it car camping. Again, this could be a regional thing. If I say it to anyone I know around here they assume the same thing.

Car camping is camping next to or near your car. It's camping without hiking.
Sleeping in your car is called being homeless.
