      Definitely the Gabriel Fernandez story. It’s super intense and shocking, but it’s about a child. I used to live one street over from him and his “parents” when he passed and I saw what it did to the community. I know it’s incredibly difficult to speak on children, but it exposes the terrible state of child protection services. There is a doc on Netflix, so you can see if you can even speak of it. If you decide to, I’m willing to give you some extra details. Be careful and take care of yourself when looking into this.

      For sure. With Lisa (who was eighteen, fresh out of high school at best, while he was nearly thirty), what was he doing trying to get her to have sex with him if he considered her "wife material?" When they're part of a religion that basically says that if a woman has sex before marriage she's no longer an eligible match for marriage (which was apparently why marrying Jodi was out of the question)? And when he essentially has to either marry someone before age 31 or get kicked out (I don't know if he'd literally get kicked out or if people would just be giving him odd looks if he continued sticking around while unmarried)? While it doesn't excuse Jodi's actions by a long shot and murder is still murder, there's a chance that someone else might have done it eventually if he repeated what he did with her with other women (find a virgin/nice girl, sleep with them, dump them, then keep them on the side while looking for a new potential wife).
      Edit: On reflection, I can see how my words may come across as a bit victim-blamey by implying that he might have still been murdered by someone else. Jodi deserved the sentence she got and it was not right that she repeatedly broke into Travis' house and tried sabotaging his other relationships before ultimately killing him. But, with all of that being said, it wasn't good that he was fooling around when he supposedly wanted to find a good wife and settle down so he could do right by his religion (especially with someone he has such a large age gap with) or to verbally abuse Jodi. Maybe he'd still be here today if he either never met Jodi or Jodi was a more well-adjusted person, but I can't imagine it'd be a very happy life (for him or any of the women in his life) if he was always pursuing women and ruining their chances of finding a partner after him by having sex with them (unless they leave the religion) instead of picking someone and sticking with them, or worse actually marrying someone but then cheating on her with a past fling (adultery/cheating is kind of a touchy subject in my family so I'm a bit iffy about people/works portraying it as 100% justified regardless of context).

    So happy to finally watch a Jodi Arias doc where the blame is put on Travis as well. He was SO manipulative and was not innocent at all. Misogyny is a hell of a thing, especially in the Mormon religion. Also, he was in an MLM so of course he knew how to manipulate all these women around him. Anyone high up in an MLM just gives me manipulative vibes.
    Of course - he NEVER deserved to die, EVER. Sadly in his case - if you’re playing these extremely manipulative games with someone who is unstable, it won’t go well. Jodi wasn’t okay and should have never done what she did, but I am so glad to hear from someone that he wasn’t just some innocent guy who was murdered by a crazy woman. You don't think he tried to stop talking to her? He was clearly scared.

He said they did determine she premeditated a heinous crime and for that she would either spend her life in prison or lose her life. What decided it for them was that they saw the evidence, they heard the messages, and Travis Alexander abused her. He told everyone she was a crazy stalker but was stringing her along and using her for sex. He called her names and insulted her and belittled her. But to this day, I just feel guilt for pursuing him and forcing a relationship. He's one of the best people I've ever met. As a person who was raised in the LDS Mormon church, I was told that I was just an object for men to marry and have kids with and it's not surprising that he pretty much viewed her as an object and treated her as such. When you're not in the church you don't realize just how much pressure there is, especially on women to uphold that commandment. Sure we can have our own opinions, but no guy would want you because you're not an "obedient woman." And the pressure is also on guys as well. They are taught to be the leader and the only priesthood holder in the family and a lot of them struggle with the "sin of pornography." I left the church when I was 16 and am 19 now so it's been a little while, but I remember just how much pressure there was on everyone.

    The thing that got me about this case (which which, being in the UK I am not overly familiar) was the double standards and misogyny demonstrated, which contributed to the end of Jodi and Travis's affair. "He wanted a virgin Mormon girl, so the fact she slept with him ruled her out as marriage material" She slept with him, so she was no longer "pure" - what about him?Mormon men are also supposed to remain pure, but he clearly did not follow that, in spite of being a fervent Mormon. I am sure there were other factors involved in this case, but, for him to treat anyone like this is dispicable. This, though, in no way excuses her killing him.

    • @D_skeptic
      @D_skeptic 3 года назад +14

      Did she really have to flat out say "I was used for sex" for you to know thats what was happening? You can easily surmise that she wanted a relationship w/ Travis from her behavior prior to the murder. Nobody is that obsessive, possessive, & clingy over a dildo with a heartbeat. People don't move across state lines, slash tires, & sneak in doggy doors over sex toys because you can just get another. Sex was just the only way for her to keep the door open with Travis in hopes that a relationship could be rekindled.
      The statement you mentioned (which came mere hours after Travis called Jodi a whore & slut & just generally degraded her via email) proves nothing other than Travis was trying to manipulate his way out of responsibility for being verbally abusive to her earlier that day. By making that comment, suddenly he has changed the narrative & they were no longer talking about his conduct. Travis knew Jodi wanted a relationship. He kept sleeping with her & playing her hot & cold anyways. (Which was stupid given he knew she had a screw loose. If you have 2 brain cells to rub together, you could easily surmise she was unstable via her behavior & general demeanor in her interactions w/ Travis). Jodi absolutely deserves to be where she is but Travis was also a scumbag.
      The moral of the story is don't poke the bear... especially a crazy homicidal bear. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🐻

      @johns3927 3 года назад

      @@D_skeptic He is responding to her that way because of her controlling, stalking, and therefore abusive behavior. Saying mean things in response to an abuser is not the same thing as being abusive.
      You want me to get mad about Travis calling her a slut and a whore? LOL She was definitely into that shit. You got nothing on him there.
      "Did she really have to flat out say "I was used for sex" for you to know that's what was happening?"
      No, but it is a bit strange that the only explicit accusation of that comes from Travis against Jodi if indeed only the opposite was the case. So we have MORE evidence of Jodi using Travis for sex than the reverse. That doesn't mean she was, but you have no basis for saying Travis was just using Jodi for sex if you are going to ignore the GREATER evidence for the reverse.
      "Nobody is that obsessive, possessive, & clingy over a dildo with a heartbeat."
      There is no reason to think Jodi actually cared about Travis. Lots of people become obsessed with others in the same way they do a possession. Nothing to do with actually caring about the person. And that's especially the case here considering what she did to him.

    • @D_skeptic
      @D_skeptic 3 года назад +37

      And btw, Im sure you've heard the phrase "two wrongs dont make a right?" The appropriate response if someone is being controlling and stalkerish would have been to end the relationship. Period. Not to keeping fucking Jodi and not to vascilate between telling her how beautiful & perfect she is to sudden intense verbal abuse meant to belittle & degrade her. (For the record, Travis also did that at times when there is no evidence of Jodi doing anything that might have provoked him... It seems he was a bit of a moody prat from what I can tell). Calling a woman a whore," "slut," "three hole wonder," "skank" (etc) is not okay & does not suddenly become okay just because someone else behaves in an unflattering manner too. You can only control your own conduct so basing it around the behavior of others is how you end up an asshole.

      @johns3927 3 года назад +10

      @@D_skeptic Yeah, he should have broken up, but not all abuse victims do. So there's not much to respond to there.
      Since she ended up killing him, and all his friends described her behavior in terms that could only be described as abusive, then yeah, I'm gonna put some weight on that evidence. And so within that context, Travis saying mean things to his abuser is not the same thing as being an abuser. End of story, really.

    I NEEDED to see this! I have seen MANY true crime ep's on youtube about Jodi, in not one of them did I hear about Travis's treatment of her - the shaming and blaming and overwhelming hypocrisy of it all - or any part of the letter Swoop discussed. OBVIOUSLY none of it makes his murder ok, or any other violent act, but it helped me to understand their relationship better and the "treat her mean, keep her keen" element of his behavior towards her. Sounds like he was a real piece of work himself. What she should have done was walk away from his ass - easier said than done, but way easier than murdering someone and spending your life in prison.

    As usual, INCREDIBLY PHENOMENAL, SWOOP!!! 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
    This case has always stuck with me, and there is ABSOLUTELY no way Travis deserved this, and that what Jodi did was OK, but the more I hear about it (and believe me, I've heard a LOT about this case!!!) it still reminds me that Travis was NOT INNOCENT in this case either. He was completely misogynistic, he pulled he this way and that, he was incredibly cruel to her, and he was so confusing to her with all the mixed message's he sent.
    They were both in three wrong, but there's no excuse in order for Murder, especially one as heinous as this.
    And, also, may I just say as a psychologist, and a sufferer of borderline personality disorder, BPD absolutely DOESN'T make us more likely to commit violent acts.
    If anything, we are SO MUCH more likely to hurt and harm ourselves than other's, because we feel so much hatred and frustration over overselves, our feeling's, and our behaviour.
    It's a heartbreaking condition to deal with, and our heart's break for the family we have that also need to live with our action's.
    My beautiful beautiful son who is now 20 year's old and is an autistic person, has had to see me deal with this for his lifetime, and it hasn't been until now that he's been able to understand and comprehend the fact that this illness is no reflection on him or my adoration of him, but something borne of my incredibly abusive childhood and the way's I learned to "cope".
    Not something you can just undo with even YEAR'S of therapy.
    That said, whilst Jodi absolutely shows sign's of BPD, I truly believe she developed these symptoms during and after her relationship with Travis, and wasn't necessarily like this before.
    Therefore I wouldn't put her in the same category as my fellow BPD sufferers.
    Anyway, sorry for the ramble 😂😂😂
    I LOVE your work, Swoop, and relate even more as I too have fibromyalgia, spinal issue's, depression, and anxiety.

The relationship was toxic both ways, and they played each other in ways. It also shows that Travis was more obsessed with being part of the cult more than actually developing a healthy relationship. As a atheist, I have been super critical on religion, especially Christianity and all there silly sects lately, and while I have no problem with someone believing in a God or so, I do think sometimes they go way to far. I wouldn't say Alexander would be more adjusted if he didn't belong to the Mormon religion, but I think some of the shame he felt (I think alot of the emotional abuse he hurled at Jodi was because of deep seeded shame) would've been lessen.

    I have BPD, and wow am I not a fan of how that so called expert described it. Apparently she thinks every single person with BPD who has EVER been wronged has become violent with the person who wronged them? Please tell me this was taken out of context.

      Yes and they were together maybe 5 months and she barely knew for 2 years! I read Juan Martinez book and there’s a lot of information about Jodi and who she was growing up and actually puts the pieces together of why she acted the way she did during the trial. She was very into herself and definitely looked down on every and anyone especially her family. I’m sure that she tried to make a life up to tell Travis because they are to opposites and he found out she was lying and never spoke about her past and was telling her family he was the love of her life a couple days after meeting him, broke up with her boyfriend and getting baptized into his religion idk how he didn’t see the red flags but if she lied how she did during the trial I can imagine the lengths she went when it came to telling Travis what he wanted to hear
