I use tan kote as a top coat on my stuff. I learned two things with that, one if it's too thick it dries fast and leaves streaks so I thin it with alcohol. Two is if I don't want to darken the leather as much with antique, I do the tan kote let it dry, do the antique then put tan kite on and wipe it off quickly and it removes the antique from the flat surfaces. Just don't wash and rub the antique out of the depressions. Kind of like a resist. I haven't tried atom wax, dose it water proof well and can you add oil later? Do you oil your projects?

Is all pro dye oil based? Even though it says alcohol in the ingredients

      Hi Darrell,
Pro Dye is alcohol based but the dyestuff is oil based where regular dye is alcohol based with an alcohol dyestuff. Check out the following video to see Chuck explain the two: ruclips.net/video/zokhe6oxhjc/видео.html

I know about cleaning your glove off while antiquing. That stuff gets all over your hands.

You've probably answered this before but I can't find it. I have noticed you use leather balm with adam wax often. How do think this compares with resolene as a finish, and why is the leather balm a better choice? I haven't used leather balm but I may get some if you think it's better.

It's atom wax, fiebings leather balm and atom wax, as for resolene and the balm is that resolene is an acrylic sealer and darkens the leather more than you may like. The wax is a sealer, but not near as good at sealing as resolene. If I want to totally seal my leather then I use tandy's super shene which is a sealer and a resist, instead of the atom wax. The super shene doesn't darken my leather at all and really shines.

      Hi Mike,
I've tried several top coats and I always go back to the Leather Balm. I just like the finish it gives and the nice gloss. I do have a video that shows the differences in top coats that you might want to check out: ruclips.net/video/Ff-SVFhhJjc/видео.html
      Hope that helps!

I started using the leather balm and it definitely is very nice. I am even going to use it on my Lucchese cowboy boots which I have been waiting and searching for the right finish to use.
