I bought premade crossovers and installed them in old speakers, Bose 501 IV and Cerwin Vega D5s. I can hear a big difference especially in the Bose cabinets because I also put in new subs mids and highs.

in general, but depending on the type of crossover the values change. For exemple the values of the capacitors for a 1khz 8ohm high pass filter of the butterworth type are different than those for linkwitz or bessel.
Nice project but making an inductor using loose wire around a steel bolt will be bad for bass quality because the wire is quite thin and the bolt will store magnetic energy as hysterisis and distorsion. I think your project deserve better in that departement. Good luck!

I had a question about my bandpass would like to place in my 3 way speaker. The midrange is a 8" RadioShack Fs110Hz. The only info I have on it. The woofer is a 12 full range 50 Hz to 11000Hz, The tweeter is a Morel Cat 378 with 2nd order 2000Hz 5uf Dayton cap with 2.27 h inductor. The mid has a simple 1st order 20uf Polycap. The speaker is front ported like the JBL 100. Any ideas Thanks for the videos

Woofers no, midwoofers yes because midwoofer made to play bass and midrange in two way speaker with tweeter. Two same midwoofers + tweeter can be two or three way speaker, it depends on the crossover design installed inside the enclosure.

In 3 ways speaker system of 12dB, how to improve a better separation between the woofer and mid?. Separation means to cut-off the mid-bass frequency from the woofer circuit . Should i change of capacitor value ( 15uF to lower value ) or increase the coil turns? .
Less cap value for midrange will make more space between midrange and bass response but that means also that some frequencies will be missing on response!!!
What is the reason you put a cap in series with the inductor coil for the subwoofer/midbass ? Is it to create and band pass effect ? If I want to only use the coil as a low pass filter then I don’t need the cap correct ?
Not on series!! It's on parallel after inductor that's on series! Your attention plz: - one inductor on series is a first order low pass filter. - one inductor on series plus cap on parallel after inductor is a second low pass filter.
@@Rk-hx9gt first step you have to know the speaker’s frequency response of each of you drivers found in the specifications, then on web you can find many speaker's crossover calculator to calculate values of caps and inductors needed. For high power you have just to by caps that supports high voltage ( 600-1000v) and inductors based on big wire gauge. In general the best way is to follow manufacturers recommendations. For first experience try to make crossover based on recovered parts and try many setup possibilities. Make crossover isn't easy but possible.
As you can hear in the video, you will never get a good result this way !! The bass filter seems to be 12 dB, the midtone 6 dB, but with no cut of treble, and the treble 6 dB.
I used jbl le5 as midrange that can work without high cut, look at jbl 4311 crossover to understand. There's always different way to use drivers , and it's also possible to use first and second order filter in same speaker and adjust phase physically

Because it's not a mkp capacitor. Mkp are very expensive than electrolytic one. In crossover we put mkp in the place where it's on serie. And on parallel we put cheep electrolytic caps. You can also use non polar electrolytic on parallel no probleme. But the place where the sound go through the caps (in series) we must put high quality mkp caps to get good result.

Hello. Change a driver by another different one will Change the response of your speaker, but no risk at all!! What will burn your crossover is the high power from amplifier. Drivers and crossover together are designed for a specific limited power . For that reason speaker's manufacturers recommend power of amplifier to use.

Not necessarily. It depends on the frequency response of midrange, for exemple on jbl 4311, jbl l100 there's no low pass filter for midrange crossover section. The video crossover is very easy for beginners, but soon I'll make advanced crossovers with resistors and Lpad for x drivers.

(You also dont need to add inductance on bass, but you do it because you want to increase inductance in higher frequencies so the signal will go through lower resistance and that will be mid and tweeter)

To get started,I recommend you for first experience to by a complet kit (drivers + crossover) and make the enclosure based on plan given by seller for the kit. To make speaker you will assembly wood, electronics parts, solder wire....

But for this drivers you'll need high power amp , then the crossover to support high power must have a strong components : - for capacitors keep the same value of uf but for voltage take 450v or more, for example: 600v 4.7uf instead of 50v 4.7uf. For coils: 1mm wire instead of 0.2mm wire, and keep the same number of spears. Another important things! Use drivers with the same sensitivity as possible to get flat response in yor speaker. Iif not add resistor to the driver who has high sensitivity to reduce his level of sound response.

@@homemade_audio This may be wrong , but I got a DSO-LF Dayton for the subwoofer and steam through a new chromcast[old no good ] PC into a digital converter to Denon AVR. Got a iphone 7 cheap and room correct the sub, i can go hell louder and it stays crisp depending on the recording of course .
Cross over are used for bass improvement of depth sound. I never had luck using the same power from amp to sub woofer. Subs don't need a very good amp to drive bass. Mids and tweets need a very good clean amp to sound good. I have 3 amps in my cars to separate base, mids, tweets

I agree with you for the situation you cited. but in my case, the technique that I use to simplify the understanding of crossover making requires me to work like that!!! it's like soldering a wire into a crossover board. we must understand the situation before making any false judgment!!!

Only the 15uf is polarized, the rest is non polar?

The values of any capacitors or inductors on any crossover depends on the values of frequencies cut and drivers used.
Would there be mid and twitter as big as the bass speaker? Im planning to experiment one... 😁
Why? Tweeter and mid are meant to be a lot smaller than bass speaker.

You need a inductor on that mid to filter high tones

It's coated wire, so no shorting. Enameled wire is also called "magnet wire".

@@homemade_audio This may be wrong , but I got a DSO-LF Dayton for the subwoofer and steam through a new chromcast[old no good ] PC into a digital converter to Denon AVR. Got a iphone 7 cheap and room correct the sub, i can go hell louder and it stays crisp depending on the recording of course .

Cross over are used for bass improvement of depth sound. I never had luck using the same power from amp to sub woofer.
Subs don't need a very good amp to drive bass.
Mids and tweets need a very good clean amp to sound good. I have 3 amps in my cars to separate base, mids, tweets

hola, si pones un capacitor en serie con cualquier parlante tendrás respuesta sin graves con capacitores de valor mayor a 10uf, y sin bajos sin midium para capacitores menores a 4.7uf
