33:46 The actress who played young Roderick's wife was in Hill House, but she played Poppy, not the Bent-Neck-Lady. She also played Perdita in Bly Manor.
Just realized this episode uses the double meaning of "acid". The title and the plot is the short story "The Masque of the Red Death" where there is a plague, its effects are described like those of the acid rain. The main character Prince Prospero recedes into an abbey and throws there a masquerade ball. A guest comes costumed as the Red Death and then everyone dies, obviously a metaphor for the plague reaching them. Verna's Red Death masque resembles heavily the one in the original Phantom of the Opera movie of 1925 when the Phantom appears in this costume. Rufus Griswold is named after a real poet and rival of Poe. Annabel Lee after the poem Roderick quotes to her, which was the last poem by Poe, probably written for his wife. Camille's quote "Toby, Dammit!" builds the name of Toby Dammit, the protagonist in Poe's story "Never Bet the Devil Your Hand".

Also so it seems that Fred and Tammy technically aren’t bastards since he had them with Annabelle in his first marriage, whereas all the other kids he had out of wedlock later (Fred and Tammy seem to be the oldest). That’s why they have more uppity attitude about the others
I also wonder if at one point Roderick was married to Victorine's mother after Annabelle, because Victorine doesn't seem to consider herself a bastard & neither do Frederick or Tammy based on their conversations. They seem to only refer to Camille, Prospero, & Napoleon as bastards.
I like how every reactor calls the chimpanzees “monkeys” dozens of times while watching this, only for the show to later have Victorine drag people who do that
Annabel Lee isn’t the Bent Neck Lady, that was Victoria Pedretti. She was Poppy Hill. I mix her up with the actress who played Charlotte Wingrave in Bly Manor 😅
I always get Katie Parker (Annabelle Lee) and Alex Essoe (Charlotte Wingrave) mixed up at first too lol. Alex actually is in this briefly; she was on the TV in the first episode when Camille is watching about the trial - she's shown on the stand as the whistleblower.

Annabel Lee, has got to be the most haunting poem I have ever read. I think it's in every hard core goth's lexicon.🖤💀 ...for the moon never beams without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling, my darling, my life, and my bride, In her sepulchre there by the sea - In her tomb by the sounding sea. E.A. Poe

I have no clue why but Cody, your short little head dance when the club music hit made me laugh my ass off so much for no understandable reason. It just tickled me.
I love seeing the deiference between reactors who know Edgar Allen Poes work and reactors who don't. I've noticed the reactors who are familiar tend to guess who/what Verna is by the 2nd or 3rd episode, altho some get it in the first. And I love hearing the theories of reactors who don't know Poe very well or at all. The theories are almost always wayyyy off base but I love it lol
The actress that plays Annabelle isn’t the actress that plays the bent neck lady in hill house but she plays the evil ghost in hill house which I can’t remember her name but she’s more of a prominent character towards the end of that show. Poppy?
Remember when the folder was thrown down in front of Prospero and they discussed these were abandon buildings and also the company was accused of dumping chemicals??? I'm not giving anything away. It's said right in the show. They never got rid of the chemicals they stored in the water tanks.
the sound design in the end of the episode is disgusting and i love it. this series is an impressive combination of edgar allan poe's work and mike flanagan's commentary on the sackler family and their horrifying work in the pharmaceutical industry. it's like if succession was a horror / thriller series. can't wait to see you react to the black cat episode - that one is my favourite.
The acid came from the poor decisions their dad rodrick made. So they were fighting a court case about poor maintenance on the buildings and harmful chemicals it was putting out. ( 1st bad decision) The older brother was suppose to have them demolished years ago but never did (2nd bad decision). BC Perry didnt care literally showed up to the meeting late and was warned by the workers the building wasnt safe he went forward.(another bad decision) So when Verna warned him about one decision leading to another. She wasnt just talking about how he came into the world but also what was leading to that exact moment of karma.
Hey there, 🤗 Verna is not the devil, she is not even evil. Verna is an anagram for Raven. She is the raven. 🐦⬛ She isn't human. She is the executor of fate or the executor of karma. Verna is a shape shifter, she can manifest to each person at the moment before their death as they can see her. She is offering each of these people the most honest conversation they will over have in their lives. People with power get the opportunity to do good things or to do bad things. Verna offers them the opportunity to make a different decision. That is why she was telling him you could stop this, in the room. She is supernatural. She sees you from the inside out. She allows people to tell the truth that us as human beings rarely do. Each character is like an instrument, Verna knows how to play those instruments like a symphony. ❤❤

Prospero's death is the most well planned death of the series. Him not even checking that it wasn't water was smart
