How to install twin water butts from Wickes.

- Welcome back to my workshop..... well actually im out and about today.
Today I am installing a set of twin water butts and thought you may want to know how i did it.
These water butts were from #Wickes and will be a direct replacement for some aging units that are..... a bit past it 😁.

Twin tubs , takes me back a bit , anyway nice job. If you put a couple of tablespoons of olive oil in each it lays on the surface and drowns any mozzy larvae that get in...they cant breathe through the oil and your garden will be a lot safer from the blighters . 👍👍👏👏

I have never seen such large water filters. There are small types of water filters here, which are usually for the kitchen. Thank you for showing the detailed installation of the water filters. 😁 Thanks Mehmet. Its good to have large tanks here in the UK.... it rains a lot. But we still seem to run out of water as soon as the sun comes out 🤪🤪. At least with this much water the garden can still be watered all year round. Thanks for watching and take care 😁👍

I have an overflow outlet near the top of my water butt and this is just a length of hose to the original drain. Great video though, I am going to install another two of these. I liked the idea of using the step drill from Lidl, I bought one of these recently when they were on offer, I knew it would come in useful one day! Just one thing if you don't mind me saying, get rid of those deadly strings from around your neck.
😁 Thanks r1273m. The step drill worked a treat. Worth keeping it handy for jobs like this 😁. 100% agree with the strings. I don't like them at all. I do tend to tuck them out of the way if I'm ever using any of the machinery in the workshop. I don't really want to be strangled by my own hoodie 😁. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Looks good Frank. Been planning something like that for quite sometime. I was thinking of adding a return from the water butts back to the main downpipe around few cms below in the inlet. I know thats not the case in this instance, as the existing downpipe just drops to the garden. But this has given me the confidence to tackle it 👍😁
😁Thanks Suj. You really do need an overflow back to the main drain if you can, but I didn't have that option 😔. I promise you you will find it simple enough to do... what could possibly go wrong 🤣😂. Thanks again for watching 😁👍
better to drill the butts upside down with lid off to stop debris falling into butt and later blocking tap

Hi Frank . Thank you for the video. I am going to be installing some water butts over the winter by running a gutter along my shed. I will be able to install 4, 100 litre butts in the gap between the shed and fence. but I will only have access to one tap on the front butt. My question is is it better to have the down pipe at the rear butt so that the butts fill from the back to the front, or vice versa? Also would it be better to have the connecting pipes at the bottom of each butt were the tap is? Many Thanks.
😁 Hi Totspur 63. If you only have access to the front butt I won't matter which butt you fill first... but you will need to make sure your balance pipe between butt's will allow all the butt's to drain. If its too high and you fill from the rear butt you will only be able to drain the front butt properly. Your balance pipes will need to be low. I hope that makes some sense. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Why not just join the taps together with hose lock? If both taps are left open the 2 butts are effectively one big butt. To get water, simply take water from the top opening of the butt or turn taps off, release hose lock, then use the taps in the usual way. I also fit an overflow pipe connected to the original gutter down pipe in case both butts get full. Using the taps to join the butts to each other, I have 6 butts joined to each other. In order to do this you will need some 3 way connectors.
😁 All if these things are possible DMS. The thing is, these buts were installed in an old couples garden... they are in there mid 80s. They can't just lift the lid etc. They just need to "turn the tap and water comes out" 😁. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Where does the overflow go?

Hmm, I, as an amateur, have got one waterbuut such that when my water butt fills up excess water goes back into the drain. How will you do that in my case with two water butts?. You drilled a hole in the second water butt, does the height of the hole in the second water butt got to be the same as in the first water butt such that when it is filled upthe excess water goes in to the drain? I am thinking so. Thank you.
😁 Hi B N. You will only need the one drain off pipe back to the drain. You don't need one for each barrel. As long as the drain hole is higher than your link pipe you should be good to go. If it was lower you would never fill your tanks properly. Hope that helps 😁👍

On some videos the link pipe is at a low level, on yours it’s high, is there any advantage top or bottom?
😁 Hi John. Its only a balance pipe so technically there is no right or wrong way. But if the balance pipe is at the bottom it will be more prone to leaking (you will have the full pressure of both tanks), and if it leaks then you will loose all of your water. If its at the top you will fully fill one tank first but if the balance pipe leaks you will only loose minimal water..... I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching John 😁👍

Yeah, we'd just call them water tanks... but then I suppose it is just as strange to have amphibious military artillery in your backyard as it is wet buttocks 🤣

Can i use a water butt to help to generate cold water into a garden studio for a electric shower and sinks? Instead of using the main water pipes
🤔 In theory there is no reason why you can't...however... you may need to have some filtration in the system. The water itself will probably be cleaner than out of the tap but it obviously may contain some different bacteria that is normally processed out. Also, the water may pick up some contaminants from the roof during collection. And finally, if the water sits in the butt for to long it may stagnate and you could get legionairs propagating.... which is really bad. So I would probably NOT recommend it, just in case. Do wickes provide that connector pipe to join the two water butts together?
😁 Hi J Griff, the link pipe didn't come with the kit. So you would need to get the additional connectors. But it did come with a short bit of hose (for the down pipe adaptor) which you could possibly use to save some money. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Drain hole not drilled at the factory!!!! Very poor supply quality. I hope somebody at Wickes sees this and actually does something about it. I suspect not, but I’d love to be proved wrong...
