This is some high level stuff. I can’t tell you how I’ve long I’ve waited for better regraining. Please keep up these awesome real world fusion tutorials! 🐐
Chadwick, thank you so much for your time, effort and most importantly will to share your expertise! I might suspect these advanced, long videos don't get an awful lot of views, but rest assured we really appreciate this!
Hey thank you! Yeah I try not to think about how videos will perform anymore - this is pretty niche stuff that I wish someone had shown me when I first started editing and compositing. Thanks for the kind feedback and watching.
I just had a shot, in work today, where I needed to clean up some Dust, this is exactly the tutorial to refine the work that i have already done! Thanks a lot!
Awesome tutorial, Chadwick! This is a fantastic explanation of how these tools are used in an advanced, practical way. I love watching Milolab Tuts for his breakdown of complex workflows into it's basic applications and would love to see a tutorial where you break down the thought process when approaching an idea (like in his "Procedural Fire Logo") which maximizes the use of mattes and alpha channels in some amazing ways!
Emilio is the best! He actually pointed out with the crop tool something I've missed - there is an on screen control in the upper right to marque draw out your area instead of using the inspector sliders. Thanks for the encouraging words.
Awesome video. One thing is instead of having to snag a channel booleans for the Add operation, you can use Merge 'Normal' mode and just bring Alpha gain down to 0. The math then becomes the same as a normal 'add' operation, where you're 'adding' the color pixels and doing nothing with the alpha. At least that was how it was explained to me on wesuckless :) it's insaaane Fusion doesn't have an Add node, but it's a solid workaround
Great video 👍 as usual ! Keep them coming ! One suggestion I would give is to use the wireless link node to clean up the node graph . Specially if you need to use the same source a bunch of times . Cheers 🥂
Hey, you might know this, but everytime I had an underlay, when I try to rename, it cycles through all the nodes on my underlay. So I have to rename the underlay and hit escape like 10 times to cycle through rename voxes of all node. Any tips ?
Underlay highlights everything in the area by default. Click somewhere else to deselect the underlay. Then hold Option and right-select the underlay title bar. You can then select rename from the menu. You can do it by holding down the option and hitting f2 but I find the right-click gives less user error. You can use the same process to give it a custom color as well.
Such a detailed, clean tutorial in fusion which is a major scarcity! Thanks for your efforts man!! It would also be great, if you could come up with a CG comp on live plate tutorial in ACES pipeline!
Hey thanks so much - I actually don't do much work with CG - but if/when I do and have new insights I will for sure share those. Most of my comp work is all in 2D - with some projections in 3D
3:53 Question about the linear gamma workflow section. What is the benefit of setting up your linear workspace manually in Fusion vs doing it with Davinci YSRGB color managed option the project color management settings?
Ah good question - almost none - they are about the same. The main reason I tend to avoid full color managed projects or timelines is because of working with graphics - either from an After Effects artist, or Text Plus native graphics. Those take lots of extra care to apply correctly - so my go to is to do color management on the shot level in color, or withi gamut/transforms in fusion.
OMG!!!! YOU ARE A GOD AMONG MEN! I was on reddit th eother day and someone had some footage with blue focus peeking marks baked in. I suggested chroma key (the color was unique enough) and then used the cleanplate node to fill in the holes! I wonder if this technique would have worked as well (mine also did a great job).
So many great tips in here, thank you! You used a Booleans to get the Add option? I use a regular Merge but turn down the Alpha Gain (so the it won't use the alpha to cut a hole in the background) then the regular Over mode just adds the foreground for you. I learnt a lot in this video, thanks again!
I have watched this tutorial three times now and I am still picking up new tricks. One question, would it be possible to take the alpha channel of the screen insert and embed this into the exr file so a colorist in another platform could access this matte and use it to season the screen grade to taste? Thanks again!
Maybe a new video on Reactor, Sir? Also, I was curious about that curve thing that you did in the begining (right around here 5:12) can you share a bit more insight on that? Cuz I've already learnt the ACES method and that tutorial is a GEM in itself! Anyways, Thank you so much for sharing such valuable content! Luv from India!
So cool that we can connect across the globe. Thanks - the story about the curve, or removing it - is the same as the ACES workflow, with the exception that we don't change the color primaries in this tutorial. But both doing the "remove curve" or going to ACES CG convert the image to a linear signal. I have a tutorial that goes further in to linear outlined (and why it is important/the right way to composite), just need to sit and actually record it.
Learn to replace a screen, clean the dust (while keeping the reflections), and add matching grain to ensure you deliver a commercial-quality, photorealistic composite.
As a Gen Z viewer, I had to watch this in like 3 times speed and it still felt too slow. Still followed the tutorial but I wish there was less overexplaining for simple parts like merge nodes and adding motion blur. Still a great video. W mans
Hi thanks for the feedback - I think this is the first time I've heard I go too slow. I'm trying to not lose anyone but you're probably right. This weeks tutorial is around 30 minutes but please make use of the chapters to skip obvious steps you already know.
Yep thats another option - sometimes you have to keep the original grain for the majority of the shot and this is when the regrain tool comes in handy.
14:14 you can also hold CMD and double click your timeline to reset the render range. Great tut, Chadwick!

@@Vianavfx hey thank you. And that is a great suggestion. I rarely use that wireless node but will give it more a go this week. Cheers.

Amazing, thank you for introducing me to the Rank Filter. You might have saved me hours a week retouching product videos.
Cutting Club means something else in the emo world 🖤
well - i would hate to look up what that means
thank you, really appreciate you showing your whole process. I wish you'd also shown how to blur the screen edges as they are really sharp right now.
No problem - to soften those edges - use the blur slider on the last matte control in the comp - this blurs the edge of the alpha (blurring the edge)
thank you, best teacher on youtube !

why dont you hit "1" to see a node in the viewer?
that works too - since I use a stylus - I like the drag/swipe method
It’s much better if you degrain the full shot and regrain the full shot.
