But raaaaaaaf, my taste is objectively correct. And I passed all my placements in college. So I must be the most correct. Right? My mother wouldn’t lie to me.

Thank you so much! I am always afraid I might drift into that category of people since I tend to have very harsh opinions on some things and worry people might feel I think less of them for liking something I dislike or have harsh criticisms on. So this is as much of a reminder to myself than an accusation of others.

First of all, yes to Winny the Pooh being the perfect novel 💖!
I happen to be married to a person who neither has the time, nor the patience to read a lot of fiction, but that certainly doesn't make him less intelligent or smart. At all. (Maybe one could even say i am more intellectual than he is, but that he is more intelligent than i am)
Also: i really don't like the paintings of Rembrandt, so i guess i am not
"getting it". Although i can appreciate the skill, it doesn't touch me at all emotionally, and that is the most important part of the appreciation of any work of art, i think.
    Great video, thanks Raf!
(Will watch your Esslemont PtA video's in a few months, planning on a reread)
    Cheers! 🍻

Agree with your sentiment wholeheartedly. In terms of Malazan, I feel that some people who “get it” have a tendency to have the greater theme of the novels gloss over the issues we’ve all had while reading the series. That every word is in just the right place, and Erikson is infallible. That’s just my two cents, though. And I’m by no means a deep thinking intellectual.
If you like self indulgent writing then I highly recommend Jerusalem by Alan Moore. I think it is a fine book. Fair warning. 1/3 of it is written in a style resembling James Joyce.

Well, I've just bought Finnegan's Wake, so I'll certainly have a look at that one. And I totally agree that the greater themes and the effect of having finished the whole thing with the particular ending make it easy to forget our struggles with the first read-through. The fact that many fans have read the series more than once certainly also doesn't help, it makes it harder to empathize with first-time readers I guess.

Say it louder for the people in the back!
A lot of what I read would not pass the judgement of the snobs but I simply love reading for enjoyment in the evening and I'm not always in the mood to disect and analyze paragraphs while reading. And I have read criticisms of Malazan I found very smartly articulated. So yeah, just let people enjoy things and don't be an a*hole.

    Yes!
I always feel so sad for someone when I am excited about a book and am talking their ear off about it and then they seem embarrassed about doing the same to me about a video game or a movie.
I am just like "who hurt you?"

Spot on as usual. Gatekeeping is a bit of a cancer in this fandom, and sometimes people need the slap in the face.

Malazan has to have the worst map in fantasy. Just an epic no

the map was stupid. i read gardens of the moon and i think he legitimately left something out from the map that was mentioned in the book a couple times. that or the map sucked.
