Thanks for this video. My dad worked at the Mill back in 1950’s I love Sonora!
I love this whole area, it’s so special to me. My grandparents used to live in Angels Camp and I spent every summer in Calaveras County, visiting the nearby county of Tuolumne. Thank you for your Gold Rush series. ❤️🙏🏼
Thanks Gianna. It is a great area and I love being here.
I lived here back in the early 2000s I loved it ❤
Fun to see Sonora.
Thanks Ed. It really is a great town. Thanks for watching.
Great video! Very enjoyable. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the historical tour
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you!!!
Sonora looks like a fun place to visit 👍
Thanks. It is!!
Thank you for posting this.. I have a lot of memories there to.. You missed the old feed store and safeway, I can't put my finger on which movie was filmed with the hot rod car pulling out down there and what about the dome lol.
My first apartment was across from the fire dept. I watched the Mother Load Parade from the balcony.. Went to Sonora high as well and lived on shaws flat.. Worked for Brownies after school.. Great memories, thank you again
Dirty Harry was the movie you are referring to, I believe. So many movies filmed in the county, so it might have been another.

I believe your right, one of my Dad's favorites..

Thank you Judith
Looks charming! Moving there in June. See ya soon!
You'll be very welcome here!
Good stuff Michelle..blessings
Thank so much Ron!
I didn't know that Sonora was one of the oldest. OMG that house of your GP is amazing. I am so going there when I come next time to CA. Thank you for taking the time to attend our premiere this morning. You rock!
Get ahold of me when you come!
My childhood town too. I was a dishwasher at 15 in the Sonora Inn. It was a fantastic town to grow up in, Friday night football games, Saturday night cruising on Washington St., skiing trips to Dodge Ridge, rivalry painting your graduation year (over another) on The Sign and bonfire parties at The Pit (and other nefarious locales). Unfortunately it (Old Sonora) has lost much of its relevance and vibrancy since the by-pass and development of East Sonora sucked so much of the lifeblood out of it. Still, it is a charming place to visit. What year did you graduate from Sonora High, Michelle?
I graduated in 1976. The BiCentenial year. Yes, it has changed a lot.
79 is Divine haha. My older brother graduated with you, he still lives in Jimtown. You probably partied in our house, it’s a Bed and Breakfast in Old Sonora now.
Home💯
Michelle, loved that! History is so rich, and adds layers of meaning. You're a natural presenter. What a fun treasure for your grandkids to have these details about your hometown. Thanks for sharing! 🙂👍
Thank you Greg. I like to tell a story about the places I visit or, in this case, return to.
My parents are Gary and Mary Anderson. My name is Yvette. Thank you , it's so good to see home. I grew up in Jamestown.
Shalom 🖖😊
Glad to take you down memory lane! Happy New Year!
Thanks for the history! Always a fun watch. Go Wildcats!
Thanks SippyCup!!!
My kids would love that candy store as well. Wow 😳 that is a beautiful place your family restored.
Thank you 🤗 That candy store has old fashioned candy as well as the modern kind so that grandkids go wild in there
What a quaint lovely place to have so many memories ❤
Thanks LightFeather. I do have many great memories 😊
What a darling little town! I think I have driven through there but it was many years ago. Thank you for the tour.
Thanks Cindy! How are you all doing in your neck of the woods?
@@DestinationsChronicles Its very hot, but it could be worse. Las Vegas area is getting 115 to 117 degree weather. We are hovering around 100 degrees. I hope you and family are all well and happy.
Thanks for sharing the history of home. Take care and be well
Thank you for coming along with me, David!
Great tour of the town of Sonora! Such a cute little town. That old bar was so cute! Thanks for sharing
It's funny, I believe that cute saloon is the only place in the USA that you can purchase guns and ammo while sitting at a bar drinking, LOL. It's that old and the old laws are "grandfathered" in that allow them to do that.
@@DestinationsChronicles Isn't that just crazy! so cool
My favorite Gold Rush town.
It is truly a "keeper" on the Gold Rush list!
Great video. I enjoyed watching. Love the history lesson . Beautiful homes. Left a like
Thank you Kim!!
I just love your excursions, must have been a great place to explore as a child. Sorry I missed your live the other day. Got my solar panels in & have been busy installing them on my van.
I'm testing different times out, so really easy to miss me LOL
Loved this.
Thank you Michelle!
Do you have any plans to do more of these videos in the area? I love seeing these towns, especially since I plan to eventualy retire in that area and seeing athe areas in these videos is very nice. Personally, Id love to see more on Twain Harte, Murphys, Jamestown, etc.
Yes. I have done quite a few in the past, and I have one about Markleeville coming out next week.
Check out the "history" and "small town" playlists for more of that type :)
@@DestinationsChronicles Thank you!

Thank you very much!
About three years ago my wife and I became obsessed with Sonora. That's a town we would love to start visiting again on a regular basis. Thanks for your video. I can't wait to start going out there again. It's one of those old gold rush towns with so much mystery and untold stories of the gold rush era. I was watching Back to the Future 3 on bluray recently and a documentary about the movie mentioned that they filmed the movie in Sonora. Do you know anything about that?
Yes. Back to the future, among MANY movies filmed here. Not only Sonora but many other towns near here. About 6 miles away is Jamestown, and I have a vid on it, old time rail road USED in movies!
This is great. I hope to retire there one day, but it’s been decades since I’ve been there. What does the homeless/drug situation look like there? Is it a problem? Also, how much of a problem is snow in regards to being snowed in or needing chains?
Like any other area, there is a homeless situation. I wouldn't say it's a problem though. As for snow (I am a ski instructor and don't mind it) it is mostly Twain Harte and above. Sonora gets a real snow about once a year, not a real problem.
Class of 06 wildcats
Class of 76 Wildcats here
We've driven hwy 49 several times, lots of great history.Did you hear about placerville? Getting rid of hang town? So they used to hang horse theives and criminals, like that's a bad thing? This world is getting to weird.🤪😀🧝♂️
I knew they were talking about removing the noose from their logo.
Sonora is a hot mountain town.
The elevation is to low for the cooler temps.
Also if you are a senior and have complicated medical issues you must travel down to Modesto.
My mother lived there for years and complained of her energy bills and lack of high quality medical care.
Also the town is really not that big and only a few familiar fast foods
and a big box store.
My mother from the Bay Area was really not that happy retiring in Sonora.
Also this area is at high risk for Cali wild fire danger. Personally I like the town for a short visit but wouldn’t like to live there. 🤔
Sonora is my hometown, but I live in Twain Harte. Much cooler there. I have been evacked twice in thirty years in Twain Harte. I'm not complaining.
I live in the bay area, I would love to move to Sonora. I used to go camping there as a kid.

Is it gay friendly ?
Majority of the town is very expressive in their views - far right republican ideas. However there is the occasional pamphlet for an lgbtq night and can find the right group of people if you just talk to them! But as for the majority no, but I doubt you would have any serious serious troubles or people bothering you if you just keep your head down (as we should all do regardless of sexuality). I’m a minority in the town and can confirm lingering stares but that’s about it. I wouldn’t let the lack of acceptance prevent you from moving here! If you do I have some lgbtq friends and peers who I can give your email to! Best of luck :)
