Leap Off Page 2022: Sorrow Island

"Sorrow Island", performed by Violeta Vitanova with sound by Stanislav Genadiev and based on Kinga Tóth's poem "Sorrow Islands, the North End of Outer Hope" as part of Leap Off Page festival of literature and contemporary dance.
Leap Off Page is an international interdisciplinary festival that combines literature and contemporary dance. Dancers and writers from all over Europe come together to create a new hybrid art form, showcasing the idea that words can leap across borders and mediums. Participants are grouped into creative teams and tasked with creating a literary text that would "leap off" the page in the form of dance choreography.
Sorrow Islands, The North End of Outer Hope
replacing with bones welding with tape
we knead gold by the breach where it was dredged
what fell out where you thought when you didn’t dare to ask
had only seen the valley
the darkgloom stones scatter as you climb
lower are the water plants dried out the sand
is cold on the ground another rip the hot metal
into it and sand it quickly in case it flies
out of the body too glue it quickly the sand becomes salty
the gold stream smear the ground with the thighs
the upper arms heap hills
roll lie our rumps onto it
our chests hollow half circles to new
layers here the algae the coral also become salty
leaving the veins the mortar is slippery crying with salt
making pouring out mountains of gold not every layer
is topped with cheerfulness but the gold is warm
and the water is warm on your face
in the armpits

Kinga Tóth is a Hungarian writer, visual and sound-poet, performer, teacher, translator. Toth’s international publications include poetry collections, visual art catalogues, novels, music records.
Violeta Vitanova and Stanislav Genadiev are a professional dance duo. Violeta is a resident teacher in the National School of Dance Arts in Sofia. Stanislav creates music for theatre and dance performances and is also involved in a number of experimental music projects.
The international interdisciplinary festival Leap Off Page is organized by the Elizabeth Kostova Foundation, with financial support from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo, in partnership with TAM performance theater and Dragoshinov Winery.
