Just FIY - dark mode on LCD screens does not save battery as backlight is consuming the same power no matter what the LCD shows. Dark mode saves battery only on OLED screens because individual pixels are powered off therefore saving power. Good review, thanks.
Gee, why did they not put all the high dollar features on a $40 radio. If you're so unhappy about this then my advice is to buy a high end radio in the first place. Granted the Icom does more and has more features but then again it isn't $40.
Because $40 or $400, there was no reason NOT to do it. Just because a $400 radio is made of plastic doesn’t mean they HAVE to make the $40 radio out of cardboard. This guy is right…they go to the trouble of making the VFO font nice and then the name font makes no use of the available screen. Many of us own more expensive radios (FT5D in my case), and we don’t expect these radios to have the same reception, or bands, or APRS or digital, but geez….you made the big screen and dropped the ball. Why?
Question for a Newby here,... Dude changed Zone or Bank from GMRS to HAM,... Is this only after a Factory Reset (hack) or is this radio set & legal for HAM and GMRS from the factory ?
Raises more questions than answers. I'm wondering about battery life, what with the color display and additional controls being supported. They cost more than UV5R's, but these are prettier. Still seem reasonable in price. Yes, I know it's not a 300 dollar radio. That's why I'm here. US suppliers don't seem to stock them. Why? Many unhappy returns? Some functional advantage, but not a lot if you can't manage channel groups. Is programming a problem? Is the firmware even upgradeable? I'm hoping this generation of Baofeng-variety HT's catches on, but I'm spooked. Recently got hooked into a set of K5's. But the software is open source, so there's hope. Capabilities for all those UV-17 channel banks seem like more than the good folks at CHIRP normally provide. If not upgradeable on the UV-17 Pro, that could be a deal breaker. Reading frequency is only good if it works, although I have not found myself in many situations where I needed external frequency readings. How physically close do I need to be to the signal source? They even doubled up on the UV-17 flashlight. Cute. I call it an "urban design". Let's face it, most of these units will never leave the house, anyway. Outdoors, the lenses are going to really scratch, but oh well. Maybe next year?
It amazes me that when they add these color screens that they don’t do the obvious and have “invert”, and “all red/amber/night vision….etc. basically themes. It’s not a small thing even to make a $40 radio from scratch and the software department can’t even get someone who speaks English to double check it? If I was a U.S.A. radio manufacturer and one of my main markets was China, I’d have a Chinese born radio “expert” going over every inch of the user interface before releasing it to that market so my radios didn’t make me look retarded to the Chinese. That’s just good business.
HELLO EXCELLENT VIDEO... COULD YOU MAKE A VIDEO SHOWING US HOW WE CAN MODIFY THE (INITIAL SCREEN) WHEN WE TURN ON THE HT, THAT IS, HOW WE CAN ADD (EXCHANGE) THE SCREEN (BAOFENG) WITH A DIFFERENT (LOGO) OR PHOTO? ? THIS POSSIBILITY EXISTS IN THE ORIGINAL SOFTWARE, BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHICH TYPE OF PHOTO FILE (JPEG, ETC) SHOULD BE USED.....
Sorry Chris, but you don't even know the correct name of the radio in your hand. This new series of Baofengs is confusing enough without you causing even more confusion. The radio in your hand is NOT a UV-17 Pro. It is a UV-17 Pro GPS. They are not the same radio.
Hey guys! I've been building out my kit and I'm looking for a good couple of radios that I can carry in my plate carrier and talk 3-5 miles to my other prepper friends who are of like mindset. Is Baofeng radios the way to go? I know absolutely nothing about 2way radios, please don't rake me over the coals! Just a potential buyer looking for advice! Thanks in advance.... God bless!
Hi I'm intrigued by the little radios and am wondering, as a total novice, what sort of things I can expect to be listening to? If anybody has a moment to let me know I would be so grateful to you. I'm thinking of the Baofeng UV 17 pro, hopefully with the new screen, USB C port charging, GPS full Air Band. Other than those things the whole idea is a complete mystery to me. I've messaged Baofeng UK (in Hong Kong) to ask which of the many versions of the UV 17 available is the besyt one to find all these features - in green hopefully. Thank you
The VHF and UHF output has been reported by many as 4-5 watts, while the output on the "220" band (aka, 1.25M) band is in the single digit range and mostly useless.
Hi all, ive bought tow Baofeng Uv17pro M versions, one radio powers up normally but other one is asking me to INPUT PASSWORD???? Would anyone know what is default password as i never set up password in the first place. I only turned it on..... Thank you
Your Baofeng is not a true dual band radio, a true dual band radio has 2 independent vfo, volume, and squelch ! Dual Watch Does Not Make It A Dual Band Radio !
I believe Frank meant it's not a dual tuner/transceiver. It IS multi-band, I.E. 2m, 70cm, Air band, etc ... but not a dual tuner, which is exactly what he described.
As a 10 year Extra Class Op these Radios have value to the new Tech. I have several Baofengs I think around 8 or 9. Primarily because I had a Family use license for GMRS around hunting and fishing camps. ou simply did not have to worry if someone damaged or loss on of the radios. Funny enough a UV82 was left out in the rain and element thought it was lost for ever then found 5 months later. Of course battery dead, i recharged the battery it fired right up and still today works perfect. But with that said these radios help new tech on a low budget get in the hobby. Once in and going they can always upgrade however a radio will not be a cost barrier with these offerings. With that said I highly recommend if you have the ability a better radio offering will be a better experienc if you can affoard them.

So the kid wants the $50 radio to do everything the $500 radio does? Wah Wah wha !

It's actually has a metal frame

You comparing a $40 radio to a $300 radio. 🤷♂️

THANK YOU because I went looking for one based on Video Title but did not find correct radio.
unless your screen is oled dark mode dont save jack
Looks like your a neighbor. I'm in Menifee. I've had my UV17R Pro for several weeks now. I am bothered by the same Bank issues to speak of.

220 Tx power?
Why have dual zones if they must be in same band? And it would prolly be more than a firmware change.
Can you test the wattage of these on 220, 440mhz.

Can you tell me what programming cable you use for this radio because the one I have for the UV5R does not work
Same

Are you really itchingb about anything on a 25 dollar radio that can safe your S when all other things have failed during emergencies, like war.... ?

Dual Watch Does Not Make It A Dual Band Radio !
Nearly every radio manufacturer uses that terminology though. If it's capable of TX and RX on dual bands (ie 2m/70cm), it's a dual band radio.
@@realtyrocks1969 Definately accepted terminology and not misused in this case.

Странно почему 40 долларов , в России такая рацыя стоит чуть меньше 20 долларов
I only by quality BWAHAHAHA
As cheap as they are just throw it out and write it off as a learning experience. As in quit buying Baofeng
