I applied to West Virginia School of Medicine with 20 hours of volunteer work. I was rejected without an interview invitation. I asked for feedback. They responded by telling me I needed to have at least 100 hours to be considered.

It just depends how your hospital does volunteer hours. My local hospital is very patient interactive. So get those hours if you enjoy the work. Not all volunteer hours are useless!

Hi Dr. Michael, I had a question on the "Too many volunteer hours, no new responsibilities" portion. I applied this cycle, and continue to work at a clinic as a technician (2000+ hours). I still feel like I make great impact in patients when they feel happy talking to me and I still get occasional complements from doctors saying their patients found me kind and understanding. I don't say this to toot my own horn, but to emphasize that a long-term job still gives me fullfilment. Are you suggesting I abandon the job, to chase a different responsibility?
