- LNER A3 class 60103 Flying Scotsman was the motive power for todays railtour named The Flying Scotsman from Carnforth to Carlisle and return seen running head on into Storm Arwen near Shap Summit with thirteen on and 47815 coughing at the rear, the railtour originated out of Manchester Victoria and was due to travel the Settle Carlisle line but due to the line being closed it was diverted over Shap, most roads around Kendal were blocked today with fallen trees so we had a bit of a challenge trying to get going but we managed, thanks to Steve for the company and crack today and thanks for watching and feel free to subscribe if you'd like to see more.
Truly impressive! The perfect weather for an incredible display of steam, with the wind adding so much drama. You deserve an award for this one.
Thank you Kendal Smithy for you kind comments, yes that takes some beating, cheers👍
Well done the driver (and fireman).
Well done the train.
Well done the diesel engine, giving it a nudge.
But well done, Nigel. For outright dedication. And what a lovely film.
Thanks for watching WashingtonSAFC and your lovely comment, cheers 👍
i thought that was the fireplace in the bar car.
As a school boy I lived in Barnet N. London. On the week ends I would go into work with my dad, he was supintendent for a tunneling company constructing tunnels on the Kings Cross to Scotland main line to enable four track running. Between Hadley Wood and Potters Bar.
Steam trains arrive at Kings Cross would disconnet from the carriages and fresh one would connect at the other end ready for the return journey. The old locomotive would then act as the pusher for the standing start out of KC. The pusher would ease off at Hadley Woods and return to the KC steam yard. All very dramatic for a 12 year old.
Thanks for braving the weather for those great shots of The Flying Scotsman. You should now get away for a dram to warm up
I was about to say almost exactly the same, in the same order (apart from the diesel...)
@@johnriggs4929 when I posted it, I meant to put a smiling face after the diesel part of the comment. But forgot to add it. Which sort of spoiled the meaning of why I had added it (which was sort of 'what a pity the diesel had to be there'), if you follow me (which I'm sure you do, because you are thinking the same as me). But what a video it is, though.
The power of steam never fails to impress. Goose bumps just watching it.
Thanks for watching Don, cheers 👍
Thank you so much for an extraordinary trip down 'memory lane' . I was born in 1951 ( Robbie Burn's day ) and I have vivid memories of travelling with my dear father . From Dumfries , through to York , I believe , and others such as Oxford where my mum's family were . I remember 'urging' ( the infamous rocking back-and-forth ! ) our Austin A-70 up Beattock and Shap . Getting stuck in snow drifts and having the welcome help of some Army lads in a 'Big Bedford' . Then were was the treat ! Driving virtually parallel with the railway and waving to the Engine Drivers for what seemed miles . Aaah . I think I'll sleep well tonight . Thank you very much indeed . I feel quite indebted to you and your team . Stay safe . Kind regards . Pete .
Thanks Peter for watching and your kind comments, I’m pleased this has brought back some happy memories for you of your escapades from way back not forgetting back then cars were slower roads were smaller and the snow was deeper 😂 people are to quick to complain about things nowadays but back then we just got in with it, kind regards nige👍
@@nige7577 Thank you Nige . I think there should be some sort of official warning about memory , such as , "Nostalgia . It's not what it used to be ! "🤔 On a serious note I learnt pretty early on , by example , how to disagree without being disagreeable ! Keep on........,🚂 🛤Pete
Same here - remembering Shap driving up to college in Newcastle in a Morris with my Dad - same rocking back & forth - no chains tons of snow - waving to engine drivers - joy & always amazement when we made it to Carlisle! MANY THX for AMAZING VIDEO! Merry Christmas & Happy 2022 Everyone! just subscribed x Kim
@@ocaphoenix5347 Thanks Kim for watching and your lovely comments, great memories for you as well, all the best for the festive season, cheers 👍
You can feel the cold just watching the video particularly the first sequence. Hope you had some thermals on and a big flask of hot soup. Really great footage once again. Thanks for turning out !
Thanks Keith, wasn’t to bad once I got to the location as I got a bit of shelter and was well wrapped up but returning to the car was head on into the gale, certainly well worth turning out for, cheers 👍
@Jon Aschenbrenner 👍
Hello from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪 such amazing view great capture of the train 🚂 very good 👍 sharing
Hello Dublin, thanks for watching John and your kind comments, cheers 👍
Exceptionally well done - thank you for withstanding the cold blast
Thanks Richard, a challenging day due to the problems with the storm but well worth the challenge, cheers 👍
Wow! 🤩🤩🤩The fireman had done a great job 👏 Absolutely brilliant 🤩
Thanks for watching Edna and your lovely comment, he certainly had, cheers👍
This is the definition of devotion ! I can't think of many who would choose to go out in this weather ! Thanks.
Thanks for watching and your kind comment John, you don’t get if you don’t go, cheers 👍
I was surprised at the number of cars that were using the roads. The weather looks too horrid and the roads too dangerous to be driving on. I think being on the train is a far better option.
Great video. What a pleasure to see that icon in fast motion. I am watching this from Germany. We have lost so many of our greatest steam locomotives over the years. Right now there is not really any one competing with this beauty. We are still waiting for the 18 201 to get up and running again.
Thanks for watching from Germany Nils, we are lucky that we still have a lot of mainline steam running as well as the heritage lines, hopefully you’ll get 18 201 running soon, cheers 👍
Isn't he magnificent! Saw him at Shilden 2 years ago last July.
Used to love putting our ears on the rails as kids to listen for the trains coming. What a brilliant childhood, so many memories, Thank you!
Thanks for watching Alice T T G and your lovely comment, glad it brought back happy memories for you but I don’t think anyone would get away with that nowadays with health and safety 😂😂 it was obviously different back in the day and a much better childhood than they have today, cheers 👍
@@nige7577 hi Nige, yes true, much better than what the young have nowadays.
Proud to say, I cut my teeth on Tanfield railway (the oldest line in the world, and still running)
Consett steel works. Ball bearings for our catapults, were our toys.
We didn't even know what we had!
I do now tho.
I live in Warrington Cheshire, then in the county of Lancashire. I remember many years ago seeing the flying Scotsman going under bridge near where I live one day on way to school, I`m 58 so steam was finished by then. I was walking to school and very surprised I saw it. I will never forget the speed and the steam even though steam trains was finished. What a sight
Thanks for watching David, she would have been based at Carnforth Steam Town then I would say, definitely one to remember, cheers 👍
What an amazing sight. It literally brought a tear to my eye.
Thanks for watching Steve and glad you enjoyed it that much, cheers 👍
Fantastic images - I love the sounds made - takes me back to a childhood spent waiting on the bridge for the train to pass through..
Thanks for watching Pam and your lovely comment, great place to pass the time of day, cheers👍
Remember that also, the smell of the steam and the coal was unique.
So true.. All of older generation who grew up in the Steam train era were blessed especially. Steam trains and kids seem to have a connection
@@ronkennedy8676 Yes that’s very true Ron, cheers 👍
That brought back memroies of going to school on the bus on a frosty morning and looking out over the Stour valley in Dorset and seeing that plume of steam that meant the kids from Stur were already there. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Martin, glad it brought back memories for you, cheers 👍
About 65 years ago my parents took me on holiday to this area, my father showed me a steam train in tandem steaming up shap. It is an image I have never forgotten and this video takes me back there. thanks
Thanks for watching Richy-skys, I’m pleased this brought back memories of yesteryear for you as what you saw would be a regular thing back then, there was a re-enactment back in 2001 of the Shap Banker which I posted on here in april 2020 if you’d like to see which will be more in line with what you remember, cheers 👍
Nothing can stop her.💗🎄 Great video
Thanks for watching and your kind comment Mick, cheers 👍
That is the "Dogs danglers" of rail travel! Nothing will ever replace the romance of the steam locomotive!
Thanks for watching Mo and your lovely comment, well said, cheers 👍
That must be the one of the most exciting things you can do with a massive steam unit anywhere in the world. Damned impressive
Thanks raybede, I’m glad you like it and thanks for watching, cheers 👍
Fantastic footage - The engine seems like a mythical beast battling the elements, in this beautiful light!
Thanks for watching and your kind comments Anthony, cheers 👍
Well done Nige my friend you Steve + Stephen Brass and the dedicated hardened fans do such a good job thanks so much for sharing, the wind was really horrendous so thanks for giving the rest of us the chance to view of your efforts. Cheers. Thank you also for previus warnings of tests etc on my local line. Brian
Thanks Brian for your kind comments we do appreciate them and it’s our pleasure to post the results for those who don’t venture out be it for whatever reason, it was definitely a trying day but well worth going for, next steam for us will be on the 18th east bound over Copy Pit which is in your neck of the woods but not sure what the loco is yet, kind regards nige👍
Dramatic footage! Can really feel the thundering engine and the howling wind, great landscape as a setting. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and your kind comment Dot, cheers 👍
Thank-you from NZ for that spectacular, dramatic footage.
Thanks Earle glad you enjoyed watching, cheers 👍
Beautiful shot. And that howl from the OH power lines is eerie as hell.
Thanks Edward, it certainly was eerie but it adds to the shot and what the conditions were like and with the gale coming from behind there wasn’t much chance of noise from the loco until she was very close, cheers 👍
we wanted to see fs at Carlisle but no west coast trains running and too many fallen trees to drive-anyway this was much better thank you for braving Shap and sharing this with us much appreciated please stay safe and well xx
Thanks Louise, definitely a challenging day but better for you under the circumstances to be safe and warm at home, there’s two more Scotsman tours to Carlisle before Christmas so you’ll still have the chance to catch her, cheers 👍
Shap and its surrounds in that part of Cumbria have a rugged beauty in all weathers from what I could see of it from the M6,but filming this is impressive in those weather conditions. That little train going the other way must have got a bit of a coating.
@@rjjcms1 Thanks for that Ralph 👍
A great puffing Billy thank you for posting
And thank you for watching, cheers 👍
I’m absolutely amazed that a steam driven train is still in every day usage. It just points out the difference between the US and UK. We’ve had at least 2 premier steam trains, the S1and T1 used primarily on the Pennsylvania Railroad. They were notably record breakers for speed. But, they were scraped long ago.
Thanks for watching Rodney, we have a big market for steam tours in this country and thankfully a lot of loco’s were saved from the cutting torch years ago, cheers 👍
An artform - superb. The beauty of ages past.
Thanks for watching Mark, you’re certainly right there, cheers 👍
‘Deep and crisp and even’ just like your filming. Excellent. Cheers!
Thanks for watching ph ph and your comment, cheers 👍
The really good thing about this video is that it was shot on my birthday!!!!
Thanks for watching Paul, say no more hope you had a good one then, cheers 👍

thankyou for braving the weather for that video.Love that engine and had the pleasure of seeing it when it was in Adelaide for the australian bi centenary

Beautifully shot, cant you just hear the Gresley knock. Congratulations, I trust it was hot soup all round and a pint or three afterwards.
Thanks for watching and your comments Mark, a night in front of the fire 😂 cheers 👍
Fantastic. Beautiful countryside as back drop to iconic locomotive. Weather Conditions look severe but the Scotsman prevails. Really enjoyed viewing

Cracking shots in the snow Nige , considering the weather conditions we had to deal with ( and trees) you captured two belting shots 👍
Thanks Steve, yes a cracking result and worth the mystery tour to get there 😂👍

Thanks very much for your excellent atmospheric video. As one of the passengers that day this really gives an impression of the conditions of the trip after we were re-routed from the S&C line !

Lovely nostalgic sight... I still, just, remember steam trains going to school - tooo many decades ago!
Thanks for watching and your lovely comment Adam, cheers 👍
Brilliant little film, Nige. thanks to you and Steve for braving the chill factor. I was fortunate enough to be on that train and we were really quite surprised that we set off from Bolton only 40 minutes late with all scheduled services being cancelled at that time. The re-routing via the West Coast main line made up for missing the Ribblehead viaduct because we were able to see the stunning, snow-covered scenery in daylight - PS I shared this on my Facebook page and it has received many fine compliments for the quality of the film, and the tense build-up waiting for the train to appear
Thanks Alan, up to now nothing has stopped us from turning out whatever weather has been thrown at us but this was possibly the windiest so far, something special being one of the few when most services were cancelled so you were in for a treat, thanks for sharing my footage as I do appreciate that as well, regards nige👍
Absolutely stunning! Well done to the photographer.
Thanks for watching Mike and your kind comments, cheers 👍

Did not go over the S&C after all then ......? Oh well , reminds me of the 1963 winter , but there was much more snow then and no M6 motorway ! Well done in bitter conditions Nige . Cheers. DaveH Carnforth
Thanks Dave, think the wind being the problem on the S&C with trees rather than heavy snow and I was surprised there was no problems on the wcml through Cumbria as there was loads of roads closed due to fallen trees but luckily it was able to run and well worth the bitter conditions, cheers nige👍
Very fine camera work. Lovely to see steam and snow in November. At least the 47 was in green livery. Well done.

Thanks for watching Vanessa, you said it all 👍👍👍 cheers.
The stinker was pushing. Not just there in case of breakdown and/or heating. Lots of diesel exhaust and you could hear it growling. I've been on a Scotsman tour struggling up a gradient and then we're sailing along effortlessly. Quick message back to the diesel 'a bit of help please'. Beautiful filming. Thank you very much. Glad your batteries didnt freeze up.
Thanks for watching and kind comment Bob, the pair working together when needed, always take extra batteries nowadays just in case, cheers 👍

Great video, like the swirling steam at the end of the closing clip, very atmospheric. That wind on Saturday even here in the south was something else, you must have been pleased Scotsman was running early!
Thanks George, I was pleased she was running never mind running early as there was a lot of cancellations but luckily the powers that be were able to reroute this tour rather than disappoint hundreds of passengers, that swirling steam just finished the shot nicely, cheers 👍
