My setting for side mirrors: just past the point of seeing your own taillight lenses. Old MotorCycle trick: watch the tires line up with the road striping. If they cross, look out and take evasive action.
I still remember (and use) what they taught me in high school back in the late 80's when they still had driver's ed. S.M.O.G!!! Signal, Mirror, Over-the-Shoulder, Go!
I have been doing this for decades.... And on a multilane highway, I also check the trend in the lane on the OTHER side of the one I am moving into- MANY times this has saved me from a driver changing from the OTHER side of the lane I am going into! I always try to practice 360 observations when driving: when you are driving, you are responsible for ALL the cars around you, and paying attention to who is where, and how they are moving is very important- speed, direction, possible actions...
Very good advice, and I agree that it's your responsibility to pay attention to all the traffic moving around you. It's important to keep scanning your mirrors, and looking into the other lanes behind and in front of you. Things can change very quickly in traffic.
Question do i need to reduce my speed when changing lanes or just stay at a pace speed? Another question do I need to signal first then check mirrors or the opposite way then change?
It’s normally not necessary to reduce your speed when changing lanes, and instead, just continue on at your current speed. You might have to reduce your speed if you’re moving into a lane with slower moving traffic, but for the most part, it’s a smoother transition into the other lane if you just maintain your current speed.
Never have I ever turned my head to look over shoulder. Mirrors only. Guess I've been lucky?? Recall from a defensive driving course instructed to position the mirrors such that full view of back and sides. Think the course made a point of never turning; always keep head facing ahead; use eyes only to shift field of vision. If you cannot see the mirros by shifting eyes only then the mirrors are not set properly. Thoughts?
Yes, you should, as that lets other drivers around you know your intentions as soon as possible. After you do that, check your mirrors. Then do the shoulder check…that should be the last thing you do before you actually change lanes.
After checking your rearview mirror and side mirror, you would do one shoulder check, and then change lanes if the blind spot area was clear. If there was a vehicle in your blind spot when you shoulder checked, you would wait until the blind spot area was clear, then check your mirrors again, do another shoulder check, and then change lanes.
I sometimes move my body and it moves the when which is a bad habit You must be sure there is nothing Infront too before you look back Infront and hit something
Yes, put on your turn signal first to let other drivers around you know what hat you’re intending to do. Then check your mirrors for traffic around you, and if they show you it’s okay to change lanes, then look over your shoulder to check your blind spot before actually making the lane change.
So let’s say I turn on my turn signal to change lanes and then check my mirrors and blind spot but I then find out it’s not safe to change lanes. Should I then turn off my turn single until it is safe or just leave it on and then change lanes when it is safe?
That was only because that was the lane I needed to be in to make my next turn. In general though, it's also best to stay in the right lane so faster traffic can pass on the left.
Yeah, I know what you mean. It can be easy to do that. Try to keep your shoulders pointing straight ahead, and make a quick turn of your head (and not your shoulders) to look into the blind spot area. You don't have to look but a second, and then turn your head forward and change lanes.
If you look over your shoulder into the blind spot area and you see a vehicle there, then it’s not safe to move over. You’d need to wait to change lanes until that car passed you, and no other car was showing in your blind spot area, and there was no other car that you could see approaching close behind you in your rearview mirror. Or if you pulled far enough ahead of the other vehicle that you could see it in your rearview mirror, then it would be safe to pull over in the next lane.
Passed my road test today ☺️☺️watched this video to show me how to shoulder check
Great job! Glad to hear you passed!
yayy🎉🎉
I would add that mirror placement is critically important. Once I placed my mirrors as they should be, it made changing lanes so much easier.
Very true. A lot of people neglect their mirror settings and they can make a huge difference in safety.

nice username!!

hii they still teach this with behind the wheel lessons!!!

You're so welcome!
Thank you for this video. It will helps me a lot on my oncoming road test. God Bless 🙏 and keep safe 🙏
Glad it helped, and thank you very much for watching!
Simple and to the point with very clear explanation. Thank you
I feel comfortable right to left but less sure going from left to right . I think this will help thanks
Thank you sir. Got some road tests coming up and this helps a lot :)
ALWAYS first turn signal before putting on the brakes on left turns.
Yes...very good advice.
Thanks I have a hard time checking and looking over my blind spot I’m doing my test on oct 20th 😊
Did you pass?
Thank you very mucho … your videos are a help to me in my practice clases de driving.
Failed my 3rd driving test for 6 counts of not shoulder checking... Hopefully will pass next time.
Exactly what i am looking for. Thanks
My G2 instructor told me to also check right mirror when signaling left.
Thanks Stan ❤

Tysm!
You’re welcome, and I hope it helped!
In the UK, you have to check your mirror before signal which doesn't come natural to me
I didn't know that about the UK. I prefer to have my signal on first, as an early warning to driver's around me that I'm about to change lanes.
You saved my life💜

100% agree with you. The only thing is - this skill is needed to pass the test, that's it.
ty today is my test!!!
Wow! Best of luck to you, and I’m sure you’ll do great!
@@HowSkills I passed it!!!
@catedoge3206 That’s great news - congratulations! All your study and practice paid off. Enjoy that license…you’ve earned it!
@@HowSkills Thank you! Tomorrow I will drive my sister to San Francisco Airport using I-280! A bit nervous but I'll be fine. : D

This is a really good video. Any chance you have it in spanish?
No, I'm sorry, but I don't.
Thanks for your quick response. Your videos are great..!
Thank you, and I wish I could have all my videos done in Spanish as well as English...that might help a lot of people.
Do I shoulder check one or twice or what’s the right way for behind the wheel test? (CA)

Just leave it on to let others know what you still intend to do.
why did you have to pull into the right lane after you got into the left lane ?
That was only because that was the lane I needed to be in to make my next turn. In general though, it's also best to stay in the right lane so faster traffic can pass on the left.
Mandate for the countries having right side driving as left lane is the overtaking lane
How to stay on your lane when doing shoulder check coz when I do, I notice I am slowly swerving sideway. 😂
Yeah, I know what you mean. It can be easy to do that. Try to keep your shoulders pointing straight ahead, and make a quick turn of your head (and not your shoulders) to look into the blind spot area. You don't have to look but a second, and then turn your head forward and change lanes.
and then you see someone pop up in front of you because you were looking to your side while turning
Exactly
I picked this habit up from riding motorbikes

Yes! Signal, Mirrors, Over the shoulder, and Go.
If there IS a car how do you know if it is a safe distance. This video half explained things
If you look over your shoulder into the blind spot area and you see a vehicle there, then it’s not safe to move over. You’d need to wait to change lanes until that car passed you, and no other car was showing in your blind spot area, and there was no other car that you could see approaching close behind you in your rearview mirror. @HowSkills thank you so much! Definitely helpful for what to look at. Have an amazing day 💛
Yup, that was the blind spot. He didn't do a shoulder check.
