Great videos!! Are the shallow spools out of stock? Do you have an idea where I could I lay my hands in one. Found a shop online in Hungary but would not post arguing the cost of postage, which I was willing to cover but he kept arguing about postage cost. :-p
I'm not sure... but it seems like they are available... just as a separate model and color.... *cough* carp reel *cough*.... let me know if you're able to try it out. 👍
As far as I am aware, the shallow spool allows the line to leave the spool at a better angle for distance when casting. Also, it is more for braided lines so as to fill the spool faster with braid because they are thinner. Deeper spool let's you use stronger/thicker lines and/or gives you more line in case you need it (e.g. When you need to tire the fish or are fishing deeper water).
How much line are you able to put on it? It comes with the deep spool correct? 40lb braid here in the US, is .33mm diameter. Id like atleast 350 yards on it if possible.
Hi Aaron. Yes, it does come with the deep spool as standard. It is indicated on the spool that it can take 620 metres of 0.33mm line. That's around 678 yards if I am not mistaken. So if you want to spool it with at least 350 metres of 0.33mm diameter line, then that should be fine with room to spare for the shockleader. I hope this helps.
This is at Portland beach which is also along Chesil. I have had the reel for over a year now, just happened to start filming for the review when it was already being used for over 8 months. It still feels like new. Having casted a few times with me showing signs of aging and forgetting to lift the bail arm a few times and with 5 oz lead, it is still in really good shape. I highly recommend it. 👍
Oh definitely. The line that you're using has more to do with that, though. Having said that, I have used both braid and mono with this reel. Sensitivity is there either lines you use. 👍
Currently, with 147.5 metres of Berkeley Fireline Ultra 8 Carrier 0.32mm line on a shallow spool, 14.7 metres of Asso Protector 0.38mm-0.75mm (18lbs-70lbs) Tapered Shockleader, a tri-barrel swivel, the reel weighs in at 792 grams. I haven't experienced a backlash with this reel yet. And as for the price, it depends on where you are purchasing it from. The cheapest I have seen them go for is £69.99 with just the stock spool and without shipping.
Personally, with my casting skills (practically non-existent), around 50-80 metres with an off-the-ground cast, 2 hook-clipped down rig with mid-sized baits and 5 oz lead weight. Anyone else, probably farther.
Should be Item no. 58623 based from okumafishing.eu/shop/surf-8k/. Some countries do not carry the shallow spool (Okuma USA, for example, was not aware they were being made when I asked about it since each country offers different products). Hope this helps.
I haven't used a Shimano Beastmaster 10000xb before so I wouldn't be able to give you an answer. I chose this reel because of the availability of a shallow spool so i can use braid without needing a monofilament backing line. Having said that, if you will be using your reel for beach fishing as well as while on a boat, then maybe the Shimano Beastmaster 10000xb might be a better option for you because of its larger spool capacity. Hope it helps.
Just because of the spool capacity. You will be able to put more (and heavier (0.40mm braid?) ) lines which you may need since you will be able to put you bait farther. Plus if you need to tire a big fish after dropping your bait, you should have enough line to do so. Otherwise, if you will be doing more beach casting vs drone fishing, then I will still recommend the Okuma Surf 8K + shallow spool.
In the video you say the shallow spool that you are using will hold 300m of 0.30mm line.... and you say you are using some 0.28mm line, and a tapered leader, giving you just over 300m of line? You then do a pendulum cast which totally empties the spool! Did you use a thicker line than stated? Or is the spool capacity very low? Something isn't adding up
When I took the video, the shallow spool was definitely filled to the brim with 0.28mm SeaKnight Monster S9 line plus the leader. One factor that helped was the wind was going out to sea which gave me more distance. Another factor is that the part of the beach I was on is elevated compared to the sea level. And then there's the fact that I couldn't see where and when the lead actually hit the water - meaning it could have had hit the water and was just pulling line. Most probably, I was getting around only 150-170 metres and the rest of the line was still arching in the air. I hope this clarifies things a bit. 👍
No issues so far. Just don't load a line that's lower than 0.28mm diameter, otherwise you might see gaps on either end of the spool (i tried loading it with 0.18mm) since it was not designed to be used with such low diameter lines. I am actually planning to get another one, as well. 😁

They do go really quick. Turn on email notification on your favorite online fishing store so you will get notified once they are available again. I waited 3 mo ths the last time, but as soon as I was notified via email, I purchased a shallow spool within 2 minutes. 🤣
I am assuming you meant dunk it "in water." First, why would you even do that in the first place? Second, if you did manage to dunk it in water, there should be no reason why you would not be able to take it apart, dry it out, oil/grease where appropriate, and put it back together. And third, if you did not mean dunk it "in water," please refer back to my first point in this comment.
Not for me…! Never liked spinning reels… ! Conventional all the way..!
