1975, headed Eastbound on I-10, out of LA…….Joshua Tree in my rearview, and EagleTail summoning me Eastward…..Radio can’t decide whether Vietnam was a success, or not…..Too old to go back, and too young to care. 5 hours from the ocean, in a suffocating desert, “Sister Golden Hair” escapes my speakers and massages my ears with soft harmonies and quiet desperation……Was it the desert scent? Was it the moonlight cascading across the desert onto my “path to nowhere”? NO! It was the the thought of never seeing that Golden-Haired girl that steered my Rambler through Tonopah, AZ and corrected my course back to her. Best decision I ever made!

Sam ("Sister Raven Hair") and Phil: I'm so glad you finally did a Gerry Beckley-written America song after doing two that were written by Dewey Bunnell. The two wrote very different but equally good songs...Dewey's are more folk rock with mysterious lyrics, and Gerry's are very approachable, up-tempo pop-rock. Another Gerry song that you'd like is You Can Do Magic, and another Dewey song worth doing is Tin Man. They are a can't miss group as I see it!

Beckley was the writer and lead singer on this song. Something that is pretty consistent on most of their songs are the harmonies.

I was 15 and had floor seats to see America perform in August 1975 at Capital Centre, with this song all over the airwaves that spring and summer. My date was a really cute "golden hair" girl, and we had a great time. What differentiates this tune from the others reviewed so far is the lead vocalist here is Gerry Beckley vs Dewey Bunnell on the first two, and George Martin stepped in to produce in the mid-70s. Another early hit with Dan Peek (RIP) on lead vocal is "Lonely People," though I also really like "Don't Cross the River." As you've referenced so far, America's magic was fairly simple: great melodies and acoustic arrangements, along with a perfect blend of harmonies no matter who took the lead. The lyrics on most of their hits aren't overly complicated but allow for interpretation and reflection. Much more room still for you to dig deeper into their catalog.

It was on the radio all the time and it's just a song that is so easy to like. And at least at that age, I don't think I ever even really thought about the meaning of it. Love this, great lyrics filled with ambivalent love, wanting a limited relationship, as per Sister wants a friend, probably , someone to talk to, before any sexual commitment. Golden hair, she's evidently very blonde. It was not always considered stupid to be blonde. Many European heritages are very light. Dutch, Swedish., etc. Nowadays, the name Karen has been brutalized to mean angry. Karen was a very popular name when I was growing up, like my name, Susan, or Linda, Debbie, Joan, Stephanie. I love this song, although my favorite is A Horse with No Name. The imagery in that song is amazing. It's instantly recognizable. Thanks for sharing!!!❤

Sister term IMHO like similar hippie era term, my old lady. Both terms for female significant other. The former IMHO for a looser relationship, the later for a committed relationship that may or may not include marriage. The essence of the song. He's not ready for the altar, he thinks she can meet him in the middle and continue as friends with benefits yet I think he needs to fess up and express the love or he pretty much might have to move on or they'll both be miserable. I think she won't have to persuade him too long for him to grow up from the sound of it. ❤

Sam, you have the loveliest dark hair, girl! No need to change a thing.
One really great song by America that reactors don't often hit is "Daisy Jane." Such a vibe, definitely worth checking out!

I purchased this album when it first came out. I still have it. Haven't played in many years. America introduced me to elevator music.

Kind of fun to play on Acoustic. If your trying to work your barre chords, this is a good song for it.

Great song about the grand dichotomy, wanting to be connected while wanting to maintain a sense of independence🎶🎶🎶
