Somehow it's hard for me to believe that his wife didn’t at least suspect anything.
She likely knew at least something, and was too terrified or in denial to say anything. No doubt she was afraid of him, and for good reason.
It's like being a wife of Hitler I guess.... and the same Austrian.
Sometimes you just don’t see what’s right under your nose
she probably suspected what might be going on but this women whas in complete denial its sadly not so rare that women like this completly ignore bad things just to avoid confronting themselve with situations like this ... its partly because of fear i think but depends not every case of severe denial is the same ... im not trying to excuse her im trying to explain it since i actualy knew somebody who whas in severe denial like that ...
yeah i think so too @@ferociousgumby
I can't imagine how this poor girl didn't lose her mind 😔 😭😭😭😭
her children kept her going
She probably did lose her mind. You can't live and waste away your whole youth in those conditions and be normal person anymore.
When you have kids…when you become a mother…usually you’re in fight or flight mode. She’s a fighter. I think it kept her sane to have her kiddies there with her despite that fact that it was incest. I can’t wait to be a mother 🩵
@alexandraadams333 well I never was blessed with a child
Yes she is doing very well, better then me she is married and had a kid with someone else not from her father. She”s married and lives in a very nice home
All that food and supplies being brought downstairs, and no-one noticed
17:40 answers that. Turnover of enough people that no one noticed the consistency.
@@raxtbkplus many houses in Austria, Germany and Switzerland have cellars where food is kept so easy to “steal” but I’m guessing he kept their food else where or after shopping he took it straight to them, he was very cunning so who really knows what and when he did it
I read a statement from a psychiatrist who interviewed Josef for the prosecutor, and he said one time he was almost caught when his wife saw him purchasing food and supplies at the store for his daughter downstairs. He claims his wife looked right through him. She had to know, but she chose to not confront him about it.
So absolutely depraved. When I’m feeling down and whiny I will remember this poor Elizabeth and be thankful for my life. I hope she is healing and feeling safe now.
❤ same, I can't imagine what that poor girl went through and having children by her father to protect as well. It's truly sickening and mind-boggling.
Thats kinds perverted to need such a sad and evil act to appreciate your life
Austria....reminded me of Hitler.
she’s doing better every year probably at age 58
I do this often. I think of people who suffered and it humbles me up real quick
It's not a surprise that he was able to portray himself as a normal member of society. Monsters don't walk around with a neon flashing sign declaring themselves to be monsters
She birthed 7 babies & nobody heard any of it???
What happens with his wife, Elizabeth's mother, and her siblings?
No one in that house noted something wrong was going on, I'm sorry I can't believe that.
Agreed.
No, nobody, also his wife knows nothing, he was very controlling, she was a timide person, after everything she divorce him
This happened in my country. His wife lived a life in fear and denial, and had a falling-out with Elisabeth after her rescue over it. But she wasn't in it, stop blaming her.
Its important to remember the type of man he is; manipulative, cold, detatched, selfish, sadistic, entitled, etc. His wife was, presumably, subject to abuse at his hands before Elizabeth was even born. I personally dont think she knew. I feel like she must have suspected something was going on but chose to ignore it. I mean... Her husband paid for ladies of the night and took advantage of a woman then went to jail and she stuck by him.
He kept his mother in an attic until she passed away and his wife didnt find out until after.
He convinced Elizabeth to stay quiet and she obeyed until they threatened to take her children away. This takes serious long-term manipulation.
Also, who would guess that theres 7 people being held hostage in their basement. The place was sound proof and the woman in the video mentioned how difficult it is to even find the place they were at, you would need to go through a small door, that is, if you managed to find it.
They where probably just relieved when he went don't to be separate from them....
How Elizabeth keeps her sanity after all that is a miracle !
How could his wife not know anything. Her head must have been buried in the sand. I don’t even believe this. How can any mother not realize he was taken food and other supplies and not question any of it.
He probably had her terrified of him as I’m sure he probably abused her. What an unbelievably horrific thing for one human being to inflict upon another.
There were tenants in other parts of the house. Even they didn't suspect anything. No one thinks that a man is holding his daughter hostage on the complex. I see my neighbours who have basement suites, my first thought isn't that they have a kidnapped person living there. I would think it was a renter.
Supposedly he told his wife that she ran away, she claims she never knew about the apartment/bunker he built under their house. He even wrote the mom a letter making her think it was from Elizabeth. He's a horrible man!!
If everyone knew he built this cellar, why hadn’t anyone tried to actually go down there? They didn’t think it was suspicious?
I notice there was little or no reference to his wife - what did she have to say about all of this?
Rightttttttt‼️‼️‼️
I think it's more to do with our privacy laws in EU. If she hasn't been charged with anything, she's not obligated to be media present. And going against that wouldn't fair well for journalists.
One year for incest??
Yep, that was strange
1 year for incest? What a justice error!😡
What a shame, we are as human being. Great documentaries on this channel. Love it
men
I’ve heard fritzl was going to be released to a nursing home because he is no longer dangerous. I hope that isn’t true. He deserves prison for the rest of his life no matter what.
Such a vile person...and can we all just acknowledge that he received "1 year" for incest! Disgusting....
1 whole year for incear, Austria?! WTAF is wrong with you?? The laws & their punishments seriously need to be rewritten
At least he got something. Nowadays, rapists and groomers in Austria, Germany, France and the UK are free to go.
aggree! the laws in human history were made by males and for the males, women were up to 1990s even worldwide considered second class human being, divorced women were shunned in western societies! femicide is still happening in western countries and the boomer generation even denies facts.
It gets even worse. Austria is thinking about releasing him because he's demented by now and "not a thread to society anymore". Love my country
I remember hearing about this on the news for the first time. I couldn't believe it was real..
It always makes me angry when the other parent the “ innocent” parent isn’t paying attention to the abuse in their house. It should be a crime.
Horrible! What a monster!
Poor Elizabeth! I cannot imagine 😓
This is an absolutely disgusting and devastating story, I remember it being on the TV when it happened, I prayed they would all survive back then, Now what bothers me me is we know about this story but how many others that we don’t know of yet…? I’m hoping that his “prison buddies” will surly take care of him and he dare to never reach for the soap. She’s a very strong lady, as long as the media keep out I’m sure she’ll go far.
Edit: a point that disturbs me too is the fact that the house is still standing, it should be long gone and not just painted,,,,, who would want to live there.?
Yep the same thing happened in cleveland ohio. A loser named ariel castro captured and repeatedly raped 3 young girls in his basement for 10 years. He was found dead in his jail cell.
The whole basement was filled with concrete.
These wives that never seem to know have to be lying
How can her mother not know, what was happening to her daughter? She should’ve been in prison as well, for keeping it secret for her husband. Her mother obviously did anything he would ask her to do. Out of twenty-four years, there had to be a chance for him to make a mistake for her mother to free Elizabeth, and a chance for her mother to go to the authorities to report him, but she chose to stick to her husband. Babies cry loud, I’m sure her mother heard those babies cry.
The dungeon was soundproofed
This reminds me in some ways of the horrific story of "Genie" Wiley (not her real name) who was imprisoned and tied to a chair by her parents for 13 years, then "rescued" by a team of scientists who experimented on her for years, trying to prove you could teach a child language after the age of 10 (previously believed impossible). She was labelled a "wild child" (a child who has never had social contact), a sort of blank slate, which they saw as a great opportunity to study the acquisition of language. They even re-named her after a magical apparition, revealing the extent of their sense of ownership/control. It was all a monstrous social and scientific experiment. "Genie" did learn some language, knew individual words, but never became fluent in her speech. She was passed around among the homes of the various scientists, as they believed she should be constantly drilled in learning language at home as well as in the lab. One of them was even heard to exclaim, "Genie is going to make me famous!" These arrangements never lasted, as they would give her up when her behaviour became a problem - she just wasn't integrated socially! So they gave her back to her mother. YES. They put her right back in the home where she had been imprisoned and tortured for 13 years. (By this time her father had committed suicide.) Her mother knew all about her daughter's imprisonment and even took part in it, but the child was given back to her because, frankly, nobody else wanted her. All her language skills deteriorated and she eventually became such a "problem" that she was institutionalized for the rest of her life, having entirely lost the ability to speak. There is a good PBS documentary on this which might be on RUclips.
I remember that tragic story of that poor girl 💔
Bailey needs to cover this story!
This is sooo sad but also makes me angry with the mother.
There is NO WAY SHE DIDN'T SEE OR HEAR ANYTHING 😔
Agree. She deserves to be locked up in prison too
Horrific!
The scary thing is that we dont know how many more people like josef fritzle are out there hiding amongst regular people ...
edit . most people are not born as monsters , they become monster in most cases because of a abusive childhood ...
this is no excuse to horrible things its a warning that we should never turn a blind eye to abuse !!! ...
If Elizabeth or her family ever see this, please know that I admire your resilience and strength. Your lives are not defined by what happened to you, and I hope that you are finding joy and normalcy wherever you are now.
I wonder where the mother went after her husband went to prison
It's taken me until now, 2024 to listen to details of this horrific case. This is the story that made me believe that humans can be pure evil. Summoned up so well by the present - how any father can inflict such cruelty is beyond me.
Elizabeth is incredible girl, woman and mother. ❤
I cant sorry I CANT BELIEVE the MOTHER WAS THAT IGNORANT!!! This is a sick man and she is just a nut job too ohhh this is a crazy crazy situation she never ever cared this is a shell of people i am disgusted!!!!
she was scared and a cuck, she didn´t dare to dug her in nose into her mans business.
This is just heartbreaking. Elizabeth is so strong and brave, so are her children. What happened to her children that he had given to his wife? Who has custody of them? I am really glad that Elizabeth and her family are staying private. I pray for their healing.
I don't believe for a moment that nobody knew. There are more people that should be put on lie detectors and/or tried for this horrendous crime.
I live near Amtstetten, 30 minutes away to be exact. The sad thing is that people haven't learned anything from it. The most important thing is to be the face in public and as long as that is the case, hardly anyone questions anything. I think it says a lot that the case of Natascha Kampusch was similar. The places are close and it was also someone who didn't stand out in public and therefore he was able to live a double life for years. Fritzl has to stay in prison for life! The fact that people are campaigning for his release is just sick to me.
Is Joseph fritzil still alive
@@susanhume7175 He is, but he’s got dementia, therefore there was some speculation about him being transferred to a medical facility.
Whos trying get the sicko released from prison?
Who in there right mind would want this nutter out of jail !!
mir ist es auch unbegreiflich, das sich menschen für ihn einsetzen
Elizabeth’s mother was just as to blame for what happened to her. What a meek, useless, negligent woman. And what of her siblings?! What of the people who knew her when she just disappeared? NO ONE thought to look into it?? Shame on the many people who failed this poor girl.
Death Penalty!!! Its disgusting!!!
nope. Josef Fritzl, now almost 90 years old, has been in prison since 2008, but next year he’ll be eligible for parole
I couldn’t imagine knowing my dad is my grandfather. How do you integrate into society successfully?
That man is so freaking gross!!! So sickening....
People should be more nosy
Wish I can meet Elizabeth, I would just give her a long HUG !!! Because nobody deserves this !!!
yuk, no dont hug other people loooooong, where is the consent. dont be touchy feely with people bc it serves your needs to be "generous". lol.
Ok, i understand where you are coming from bjt she probably never wants to be touched by anyone but her children.
Kerstin saved them all😢
He was a sick, sick man. I know he didn't have the greatest upbringing. I'm so glad she got rescued.
There is NO excuse.
..DONT tell me,you're bringing his childhood into it!???😡😡
Psychos are "Nature" not Nurture"!
The mother HAD to know something. Don't buy it.
Exactly
right im sure god gave her some sign!
The mother brought it when her husband handed her a letter written by her daughter stating that she was tired of living with the family and ran away. Elisabeth had ran away before. Read the book Secrets of the Cellar.
@@cornellynch730 It's called gut instinct not "god" lmao
@@EzequielMartin55vf well that too lol

The man HAD to be demon posessed, to do the things he did. There is an epidemic of posessions now, and ministers don't want to admit that, or teach people ABOUT what this is about and HOW to get rid of this enemy in the NAME of Jesus Christ. JESUS is the only thing ³ are absolutely terrified of. It's WHY JObama and the rest want to get RID of Chrustuans/Believer's and anyone who follows Jesus. Because they can call on Jesus, and have supernatural power/intervention.....immediately.
Satan's eyebrows.
This is just unfathomable. Simply mindblowing!
another beautiful documentary for me to watch that will give me something to live for in this disgusting horrible twisted world, thank you
Excuse me don't believe wife never went into the basement
It wasn't a regular basement.
You had to go through 5 rooms of the "regular" basement before even reaching the hidden entrance to Elisabeth's prison behind cupboards. You also had to pass password-secured steel doors as heavy as 300 kg (over 661 lbs) and other security measures.
"Was the father SUFFERING from a serious personality disorder?" My ears almost fell off. Who was suffering?? Elizabeth!! Those babies. He Caused the suffering, regardless of his personality disorder or Any excuse.
Parents failed her immensely
the wife is as much to blame.
Exactly
I don't understand why they never mention questioning the wife or his older kids.
They proably didn't wanted any attention, wouldn't you also just want to move on?
So after 24 years, why did Joseph let Elizabeth go to the hospital? Shouldn't he worry that she might talk? Was he overconfident that she won't talk? Or was he tired of it all, wanted it all to be over and actually risk getting caught ?
This is like the worst case I’ve ever heard. I could NOT IMAGINE 24 YEARS WOWWW. I would have gone insane…
The rest of her siblings and her mother were unaware of her plight? I have difficulty believing that.
According to the book secrets in the cellar; all of her siblings grew up and moved out except for one brother that seemed slow.
Wtf is wrong with Elizabeth's mother ? I hope she is prosecuted for assisting him
She wasn't because she didn't assist him.
@@SatieSatie She did in a way. She should have filed for divorce when she learned that her husband taped a young woman with a child sleeping in the cot next to them! She gave birth to her own half-siblings.
Imagine if he died before they were found… they wouldve died of hunger. Jesus Christ
This man the unthinkable crime ❤
What a sick sick sick sick man. What a weak system as well since they shouldve suspected something from the father and done better at investigating a missing child case. There were a lot of things wrong in the process, such a shame. Sorry for such a horrible tragic loss of innocence Elizabeth ❤
There was a TV movie made for this story called The Girl In The Basement if anyone's interested (it's a movie not a documentary. It's got actors not real people)
horrifying
I think this poor creature's mother probably knew, but back then it was difficult for a woman to live on her own and with children, so she just pretended she didn't know anything.🤷♀
The demon kidnapped his daughter in 1984. I'm sure the wife could have got a divorce and coped well enough without him. Elizabeth was 18 when he did this to her, so I'm assuming that her siblings weren't babies. The wife had options. She may have been afraid of him, but it's still no excuse.
@@jaijai5250 No she couldn't don't forget only fathers, men were the breadwinners and even justice didn't care about women a bit in those times..
So many things don't make sense regarding this case. How could no one notice. Why did no one care.
Exactly 💯 But also consider the place where this happened - meaning the part of the world
I am sad to say that if this story were breaking now, it would be all over social media, including people taking pictures on their phones and posting them all over the place. I do wonder if privacy even exists any more.
Men like that need to be exposed. I'm sure that with her story being shared she and her children received much help from all over the world. Emotional and monetary the like. Privacy for who and for what reason?
Everything that's done in the dark will be brought to the light!
And yet you’re here on a social media platform complaining about social media. Make it make sense. 😂
@@Livingtheinvisiblelife I don't consider RUclips to be social media.
there was a Brit paparazzo breaking into Elisabeth’s residence actually. now her place is heavily guarded

Why is that building still standing 😢
Of course the wife knew. They always know...
On Aug 28 1984 I was a school girl walking back from school with my Bestfriend
On April 27,2008 - I was married for 10 years and settled happily in United with a 7 year old! For me a lifetime had passed..
Is this the story “girl in the basement” is based off of? Ouf that movie is scary and so sad.
Yes it is.
"Do you think he loved her ?"
He loved the feeling that he got from the fantasies he built around her, fantasies in which he attributed to himself every superlative description of eminence and potency.
a few months prison for rape in this gruesome fashion, I don't even know what to say but that actually kind of says it all doesn't it
This story broke my heart when Elizabeth was found 😢💔💔
In 2021 - there was made a true story movie with actors etc about this case. It is called "The Girl in the Basement"
And it's actually well made.
There are also 2 documentaries made.
I thought that show was based of this?!
I was wondering if these were connected. I just watched the movie a few months ago
That was the most emotionally draining movie I’ve ever seen but I can totally agree. I typically don’t like Lifetime movies and it was very well done.
He kept his daughter captive horrible.
I can’t comprehend how after so many years she was not able to escape, specially with the strength off her children. The guy needed to work, she could have bang the walls, metal (pipes), door or something for someone upstairs to hear her.
This shows people can fail you so many times. Her mother did not notice or search for her enough, her siblings also.
As a journalist you didn't also find it abhorrent? It's only in your capacity as Dad? That's disturbing.
The way she came out of this horror...is almost unbelievable. I would have expect more damage on her soul. But she was able to publish and sell the story alot on the tv. She was able to speak about it like a pro.
Fascinating somehow, I have so many questions and wish I could talk to her.
No, that is not the case of Natascha Kampusch. Elisabeth was Never on TV and lives absolutely anonymous.
Natascha Kampusch went public but Elisabeth Fritzl never did.
He gets life, yes, but "10 years for deprivation of liberty" after he'd imprisoned his daughter for 24 years? I'm guessing that's the maximum the court was allowed to give, but the rules on sentencing need to be rethought to take into account the occasional monster!
And 1 year for incest!
That man is a monster. Doing that to your own flesh & blood smh😢 I can only imagine what that poor woman had to go through giving birth to all those children all by herself, without any medical attention, she didn’t get stitches, & what would’ve happened if she had to have a c-section..

I tried with all I had in my life to get through life and it just is still there today to haunt me .
My children are still effected from my pass .
It can’t be escaped .

This reminds me of the story of Jaycee Dugard, who was kidnapped and held in captivity for eighteen years, giving birth to two daughters by her kidnapper, before being rescued in 2009. Obviously there are a lot of differences, but both of these cases are horrible.

I read the book by John Glatt and it is such a disturbing case. It’s one of those stories that doesn’t seem real but it is. I’m honestly amazed on how Elisabeth survived this because I couldn’t. I would’ve ended my own life if I was in a situation like this.
