Its important to remember the type of man he is; manipulative, cold, detatched, selfish, sadistic, entitled, etc. His wife was, presumably, subject to abuse at his hands before Elizabeth was even born. I personally dont think she knew. I feel like she must have suspected something was going on but chose to ignore it. I mean... Her husband paid for ladies of the night and took advantage of a woman then went to jail and she stuck by him.
He kept his mother in an attic until she passed away and his wife didnt find out until after.
He convinced Elizabeth to stay quiet and she obeyed until they threatened to take her children away. This takes serious long-term manipulation.
Also, who would guess that theres 7 people being held hostage in their basement. The place was sound proof and the woman in the video mentioned how difficult it is to even find the place they were at, you would need to go through a small door, that is, if you managed to find it.

There were tenants in other parts of the house. Even they didn't suspect anything. No one thinks that a man is holding his daughter hostage on the complex. How can her mother not know, what was happening to her daughter? She should’ve been in prison as well, for keeping it secret for her husband. Her mother obviously did anything he would ask her to do. Out of twenty-four years, there had to be a chance for him to make a mistake for her mother to free Elizabeth, and a chance for her mother to go to the authorities to report him, but she chose to stick to her husband. Babies cry loud, I’m sure her mother heard those babies cry.

This reminds me in some ways of the horrific story of "Genie" Wiley (not her real name) who was imprisoned and tied to a chair by her parents for 13 years, then "rescued" by a team of scientists who experimented on her for years, trying to prove you could teach a child language after the age of 10 (previously believed impossible). She was labelled a "wild child" (a child who has never had social contact), a sort of blank slate, which they saw as a great opportunity to study the acquisition of language. They even re-named her after a magical apparition, revealing the extent of their sense of ownership/control. It was all a monstrous social and scientific experiment. "Genie" did learn some language, knew individual words, but never became fluent in her speech. She was passed around among the homes of the various scientists, as they believed she should be constantly drilled in learning language at home as well as in the lab. One of them was even heard to exclaim, "Genie is going to make me famous!" These arrangements never lasted, as they would give her up when her behaviour became a problem - she just wasn't integrated socially! So they gave her back to her mother. YES. They put her right back in the home where she had been imprisoned and tortured for 13 years. (By this time her father had committed suicide.) Her mother knew all about her daughter's imprisonment and even took part in it, but the child was given back to her because, frankly, nobody else wanted her. All her language skills deteriorated and she eventually became such a "problem" that she was institutionalized for the rest of her life, having entirely lost the ability to speak. There is a good PBS documentary on this which might be on RUclips.

The most important thing is to be the face in public and as long as that is the case, hardly anyone questions anything. I think it says a lot that the case of Natascha Kampusch was similar. The places are close and it was also someone who didn't stand out in public and therefore he was able to live a double life for years. Fritzl has to stay in prison for life! The fact that people are campaigning for his release is just sick to me.
