    Excellent analysis.
    Simple. The lawmakers are working for the US Government. In the US it has been publicly stated that the US will try and undermine any project the Chinese are trying to negotiate or implement with other countries. The US knows they don’t have the capability to operate the project, and they don't ever have cared about the impact on the countries people.
    The US has never cared about Africa unless there’s something they want from it.
    China is a country that does not get involved in the internal politics of a country. If they feel they are not wanted they will not accept a project or leave the country if necessary.
    Any finding that comes form the West WILL have some strings tied to it at some point in time.

      Stop the BS, when China makes loans to Africa, all of the equipment have to be bought from China and loans have to be paid back in USD with interest. How much steel made in Nigeria was used to build these tracks? In some cases, the Chinese are demanding that their workers be used. Look at the number of Nigerians living in the US working sending money back to that country.

      ,@@willylu88 I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, and really sucks that we attack each other because we seat behind the comfort of our damn keyboard. I never support the Chinese loan specifically for Nigeria because we do have the funds to finance the projects we are taking loans for. Saudi and Dubai never took any loans from China yet they have better infrastructure. I will not mention the company but the same business model was implemented by the Bank of China and over $64Bn was moved out of Naija after private placement just one night and the Chinese were not left out. All their projects are extremely overpriced because of corruption. so please attack the politicians who know exactly what they are doing and not you fellow Nigerians

    Congratulations to Nigeria! This means much more than getting an 11 bln$ loan! This shows that the Nigerian railway system is managed SO WELL, that Nigeria does not necessarily need the Chinese for these projects anymore. - Nigerians run railway lines WITH A PROFIT and this is very RARE in the world! As a result the FG in Abuja can now CHOOSE between investors and none of them is Chinese! I hope that the next FG will run the Calabar line with a profit as well. (Little hint: the catering on Nigerian trains is a gold mine waiting to be explored and also letting out shop space in larger stations like Mobolaji Johnson is one.) - The Chinese will come back, trust me. As long as a shop makes profit, banks make a friendly face. Greetings from Holland!

    I think it would be more cost effective and economically viable for the railway to transverse Onitsha - Nnewi then Aba, to link up with the Port Harcourt - Maiduguri line. Building rail tracks through Delta - Bayelsa - PH will be expensive due to the swampy/riverine terrain, up to 6 (or more) new bridges will need to be constructed in addition to soil reinforcement.

    Why would China loan money to a country whose politicans accused China of setting debt traps? China gave the loan in very flavouable terms and yet the politicans threw accusations around. Very ungrateful. If Negeria wants to reconsider awarding the railway contracts to China, go ahead. China doesn't need this kind of aggravations.

    • @yemiadeleke4197
      @yemiadeleke4197 2 года назад +1

      Why "ungrateful"? No financing is free. So drop the haughty attitude! It was a simple misunderstanding by some foolish legislators. Pure local politics over standard financing terms. I don't see how that should make China step back from funding. China is slowing down for a reason and I do not for one believe that it has anything to do with Nigeria's corrupt politicians.

      @@whiteknuckles please do not simplify financial deals between nations to common decency of saying "thank you". Fortunately for me, I have a beautiful culture where saying "thank you" even when you are the one doing a favour is the norm. But that is not what we are talking about here. It was obvious that two things were at play when the Nigerian politicians began crying foul (a) they were either foolish or knew nothing about basic loan transaction, or (b) they were just being their corrupt self and looking for an angle. Nothing new with politicians. But if the Chinese attitude is that countries should shut up and just be grateful. Well, that is not Nigeria or Nigerians. I wouldn't want to take more Chinese loans too because it would be a petty reaction by China. Now, I am not saying the political nonsense regarding the Chinese contract was right. I am a lawyer and I saw it as stupidity. But at the end of the day, no nation acts in the best interest of another nation. Every action of a country is for it's own national interest. The Lagos to Calabar railway is perhaps the single most important project in southern Nigerias history largely because it will launch southern niger8as economic development into stratosphere. Southern Nigeria is subsaharan Africas most advanced economic zone and the black world’s intellectual and entertainment power house. But because the British colonisers focused on a north south approach to developing the economy the east-west element was ignored and the British feared the agitation of southern Nigerians for independence so any effort to unite the southern provinces were quashed. As a result the cost of east west businesses are cumbersome and expensive, and the west and east are not fully integrated into each others economies. The west relies on Lagos and the east on port harcourt when actually integrating both zones would boost their economies. Southern Nigeria is culturally homogenous we all have the same cultural roots and speak closely related languages, eat the same foods and can integrate easily into each others societies but fewer people from western and midwestern Nigeria ever travel east of the river Niger. It has always been the opposite way round as a result people from the western half of southern Nigeria including Edo and Delta states are often largely ignorant about the eastern half. So this railway will not only improve economic interaction but social, intellectual and cultural interraction. The East will benefit from the skills and investments from the West as much as the West has been benefitting from Igbo investments in places like Lagos, Benin and Warri since independence. It will also improve tourism to the Delta and especially to the extremely beutiful regions of Cross Rivers state like the Obudu plateau. Western Nigeria is wealthy but that money is spent flying to Dubai, London and New York largely because of the inaccessibility of Nigeria enormous tourist potential in cross river, adamawa and Taraba states. So the east west line would open up a safe way of mass transit travel that would bring major economic, social and cultural opportunities to the south and speed up its economic integration as we can’t afford to operate in silos. The south needs to be fully integrated to achieve its potential. It is already the wealthiest region on the continent by sheer economic, intellectual and cultural output and its gdp per capita would be one of the highest on the continent if it were an independent country, so this railline is worth every kobo that is spent on it because the benefits will be massively enormous.

    China lost a lot of money from Belt-road projects. Western countries blame for debt trap. A lot of Africa countries simply not pay back even the interests of the loans, and ask for forgiveness of the loans. Many hundreds billions of bad loans. This is the fact. I hope china can learn and be smarter instead of being a sucker, also the bad guy in many people's eyes.

    There's something I don't understand, the Chinese government will loan Nigeria the money, and Nigeria will give the contract to Chinese contractors and construction companies, which means most of the money is still going back to the China ,and the Chinese government has subsidiary companies that are also into construction and engineering like CCECC and other
    So the money borrowed from China will still go back to China and Nigeria will pay back the money with interest.
    Or am I confused, because if I'm right what if the infrastructures is successful and doesn't bring in as much revenue as expected ,wetin we go do , our own don finish and nobody will help if they aren't going to get anything out of it

    China too has a struggling economy. It’s Father Christmas days are numbered. Their economy is on the brink of collapse or a major melt down so they are not going to be throwing loans around like there’s no tomorrow. Those days are gone forever. It is better that loa are channelled through the construction firm rather than the government as we will never see the money . However our legislators are actually right to query the terms and conditions of any loan to ensure that they are fair and the country isn’t being tied into a debt plan that might act against its own interest. This is more so given chinas record in places like Zambia and Malawi where both countries have more or less ceded ownership of major infrastructure to the Chinese for not being able to pay their debts.
