Best mix for a perfectly smooth finish without any grains at all - 2 parts Portland cement, 1 part fly pot ash…add water to required consistency….using fly pot ash instead of sand will slow down the drying process in cold areas….and the consistency is similar to clay. Perfect.

That was a great educational video. I also have started making cement garden decorations and like you I had a very difficult time getting the cement to the texture I needed. I watched tons of videos and the best one that solved my problem was a lady from Ukrainian. She used 1 part cement 2 part sand and she added tile glue to the mixture and let me tell you it made a tremendous difference. You can add the water slowly to get it to the texture you want , even like a clay like texture. One guy told me he added a small amount of detergent but I didn’t see any difference. The best is the one the lady from Ukraine made. It’s so much easier to use. Oh yes and they sell concrete with sand already mixed together without gravel, that’s the one I used. Sorry you had so much trouble like I did but I think I got the hang of it finally 😂

      Hello Cristina,
Thank you and yes, it was a painful learning experience, but that's why I started to create a series of cement videos so that people don't have to go through our experience. Thank you very much for sharing your story, I love hearing stories like yours where although you didn't know much about the material, that didn't stop you, and thanks for leaving us all this recipe. Since I made this video, I've made a few sculptures and I've learned more, like you I've used detergent and I don't notice much difference either, I have used glue but little amount. I will definitely try this recipe on a future sculpture,I don't know if you remember the name of the channel or if you could share the link, maybe that video can help other people. thanks again.

@C-Art~ Thank you for sharing ALL of your experiences and techniques! Hearing what worked and what didn't, is such valuable information for you to share with us! I also appreciate your emphasis on wearing the proper protective equipment when working with cement, so many people do not consider this aspect. I would also add that it is important to wear a good respirator mask and goggles when mixing your cement, not just a dust mask. The dry cement mix creates very fine airborne particulates when it's poured into a mixing container which can easily pass through a simple dust mask and into your lungs. I really enjoyed this video! Thanks! ~~Christy~~

Thanks for the video! I was making a clay figure sculpture in college, & then got injured in an accident. I was next not allowed by my professor to finish & turn it in for the semester; very unfair. My daily Bible Word gave instruction "Do not return to the place where you have been harmed," showing me not to work with this cruel professor anymore. So I was trying to find a way to make my sculpture since I no longer have access to a pottery kiln. I looked at expensive materials I cannot afford. I was praying & wishing there is some kind of archival 'air dry clay' that is like pottery. I asked God can you please let there be some kind of 'miracle' clay I do not need a kiln to fire?? & to please show me what to do? DUH--- then right after prayer, the next thing that comes my way is videos of cement mixture sculptures! LOL. I realize it is the 'miracle' material I was hoping for--- air dry, but solid... lasting... not so fragile like plaster. I really want to give this a try... & hope to avoid problems like you talked about... "rocks for mom" where the concrete dried before you can use it. I am watching many videos. Your Italian accent is very attractive to American women like me... though you are too young...boo... Oh well. At least I can learn art from you. Thanks for the lessons! Blessings. Peace.

The point of sharing mistakes is not only to help people avoid making them and wasting time and materials, but also to help them realize the right way to do it. It's easy to share how to do something from point A to point B, but not everyone watching the video will have the tools, space, or time. That's why I value sharing the experience so others can adapt to what they have. Personally, I don't have all the tools or even the knowledge, but I still do it. I wanted to thank you so very much for making this video. I am trying to get a recipe for clay-concrete to make some medium size sculptures for my yard. I have been doing some sculpting with regular firing clay. But with no place to fire it it just a waste of time. I could pay to have each piece fired but that could get expensive. You said something about adding clay to your cement but you didn't mean the Portland mortar mix that already has sand in it. RIGHT?? That is what I bought, mainly because those bags are only 60 lbs. each. I am a woman and though 50 lbs. I can kind of handle anymore than that is just too heavy for me. Where do you keep your bags of cement to keep them from getting damp and hard? Thanks so much!

Hi Mary Landry, it's a pleasure and working with these materials was difficult, I must say that when I was planning to create my almost 6 foot concrete sculpture I couldn't find much information so I needed to make this video to help other artist. I haven't tried it yet, but in my research I found that some concrete sculptures mix Portland cement or mortar with firing clay, yes it is possible. If I remember it was a small amount of clay about ¼, I am planning in the near future to create a small concrete sculpture and will try to find and try a mixture with clay. Stay tuned.
About storing your cement bags, make sure the bag does not touch the cement floor, you can put it on top of plastic or wrap it, you can also store it in an airtight plastic container. I hope this was helpful.

Yes, wear gloves or suffer like me. I remember my hand glow red and after that my hand was allergic to cement. I am so scared of cement touching my skin. Please wear gloves and don't be stupid. Damage is permanent and my Doctor sad nothing to do to fix. So practice safety. I am also allergic to antifreeze, it started when I worked at a radiator shop. I didn't wear gloves and now I am allergic to antifreeze.

Hi Dyortos, you are right, many artists use some of these techniques, but I have to say that I have seen amazing people making sculptures by hand only, and with some amazing detail.

Like many, this fellow goes into WAY too much personal detail at the outset. Irrelevant to those of use who want to make concrete sculptures. GET TO THE POINT!! Just tell us how to do it.

I understand your point of view, and you are right, but this channel is not about how to do specific things, in my learning journey I would have liked to find videos like mine, and since I did not find them I created this channel, where the goal is to learn from the experiences I share, so that I can share more advice or situations that may be more helpful. I know is not for everyone. for what you need I recommend paying for a class.
