When I was a young lad a kindly lady in our family took me on a day trip to see Stonehenge. Back in those days some 60 odd years ago you could walk among the great stones, feel their age and presence. It was a wonderful experience but NOW it's just a money making exercise. You don't even get close to the stones and have to stay at least 50 meters away. You pay for parking, food, drinks and entry to a walk around path. You might as well look at photos off the internet. IT SUCKS
@Brian Mino In 1958 the stones were taken down and reset in concrete. Many people would ask what the grassed mounds of earth were, It was what the concrete had replaced. How do I know this. As a lad I lived within sight of the Henge. At that time the pine tree shields were only young and I could see through them. People have said there were no houses withing sight of the Henge, Well not only one house but a whole row of them that are still there. They were built from left over steel plates left over from wartime ship building.. They look a bit bettor now, even the bomb shelters have gone.
The most realistic reason is that 2 of the large stones were already at the site naturally. They happened to allign perfectly with the summer solstice sunrise. Locals noticed this and saw the site as sacred and so transported more of the matching stones from 20 miles away to complete the "sacred" site.
Maybe it was a market place thet peoples traveld to a couple of times a year or so to trade and to see how each others 'tribes' where getting on. The stones may have been brought there because it took many people to move them this would mean no one could 'fake' the Market i.e set up in a different place and 'hi-jack the Market. Which was sure to have happened in the past. No maps back then not many litterat people or different litracys anyway. Would make seance to create a market place that was impossible to 'duplicate' so everyone knew they where at the right place? A place to trade stock, crops maybe to even 'lend' peoples food so they would not have to turn to 'raiding' there nabours or cannibalism which Im sure happened before the place was constructed? The very first 'national trade centre perhaps' The plain area around the site would sujest that many peoples 'camped' out around the site while the 'trade season' was on probably at the end of winter and the end of summer. could trade in everything from seeds to gold knowledge of crops and so forth. Like mentioned it would be impossible to 'fake' or 'set up' another market place as the effort to create the sight must have taken huge 'unit cohegen' i.e everyone working together. Kind of like the market of markets where all the important 'cheif's' of the time would meet and 'make book' for the passed and future six months.
Haven't visited but would like additional information about it. The structures north entrance sits at an intersection of longitude and latitude and I have theory that it was designed to determine the difference between magnetic north and true north. The structure was obviously created by individuals who had access not only to compass but also to maps indicating longitude and latitude. This structure was once more vast than what is blocked off on the heritage site. In each direction you see an oblong series of circulars where about for circulars run in a line. These circulars are likely what can be viewed as the edges of the site. Interesting the north entrance runs directly at a place where longitude and latitude intersect and exactly one grid to the south there is a southern structure. There is another circular ring that is on the outside that marks north, south, east, and west. From these extending in rings from and enter point there are markers that indicate north west, north east, south east, and south west. As you travel further you find increments marked for directions but interestingly only where daylight would have cause to mark them. In addition to telling time and marking direction two more things I suspect you could calculate from these stones. The first is distance. Weather and time considered the top stones do one thing. They seem to block out the horizon. Which would be great for anyone who was surveyor or shooting arrows because elevation is an issue and if the distance to the tree line was known, or you placed a cross hair on an arrow site you might want to know how high to aim in order for your arrow, axe, or spear to travel a distance. It is my guess that these stones have magnetic properties and you could use the magnetic field distortion of your compass to find it. Or that it might throw off a compass. This is likely that it was done either to make it obvious it's function or to throw off a compass that might be used to detect it. I would like to see the area examined using the polar north shifts on computer imagery from the time it was created and seeing how accurate it is. Originally you might find that longitude and latitude dictate the position of the stones. But as you move into the center of it the compass becomes your best friend. And not only that but as you move through points in the inner circle the more accurate it becomes. My guess is that map makers detected a difference between magnetic north and geometric flat map north and built this to improve the quality of maps. In the process adding features to calculate time and marking distance. At a stretch of the imagination. Means to determine season were off. Season change was different in different places and over the years it required an investigation. This area was selected and commissioned to examine the issue of magnetic north and flat earth maps.
Stonehenge has been sketched and well documented many times since ancient times ,and we even know the date that some of these great stones toppled over mainly through earth movement ,but luckily with the help of the sketches we already had and also that in some of the larger ones were keyed in a way that let us reconstruct them to position that they once held. What people often see is that in the 20s when they were replacing the larger stones,a lot of the newspapers of the day carried pictures of the work being carried out ,and so all these stories were just based on the pictures not facts ,after all it is older than the pyramids and does need some work doing every few thousand years or so

My Great aunt was a tour guide there and Salisbury Cathedral I remember being a kid and going to stay with her for a week in the summer holidays and having to go on the tours with her i hated it at the time having to go round over and over again but now i'm older i'm glad I did!
Well, it was once locally reported that a lorry had lost control on the (then) nearby highway and crashed into Stonehenge, knocking down many of the stones. I think this was back in the 1920s.

What is the most curious fact to me is it appears that Stonehenge was built by two different people. Started by the Anatolian farmers, who arrived about 4000 BC and from 3000 to 2600 built Stonehenge with the Blue Stones from Wales. And then the Steppe people who arrived around 2600 BC and may have been the ones who raised the larger Sandstone rocks from about 16 miles away. It is curious to me that the new Steppe people decided to continue the tradition of building Stonehenge.

I have been examining the design for Greek and Roman columns and the placement of the stones suggests earlier architecture. The interesting thing about exams of primitive structures and architecture is that anything that was built out of animal fur, wood, or biodegradable material would have been deteriorated to the point of unrecognizable quality. Imagine for instance a larger wooden and animal structure that was built on it. A second floor for example. The flooring would have degraded to the point of dust. The wooden dowels used as wooden nails and screws would have vanished. The sun shining directly over the, "windows" and covered with animal skins and wooden shutters. Degraded by time to the point of non recognized dust. The point of it is that just because there is little evidence of a culture that doesn't mean that one didn't exist. In primitive structures there is an entire evolution of bone tools, animal skins, wooden nails and structures that is basically gone. Anytime I see a ancient structure I think to myself, "what would have been here or what could have been here that was eroded. Essentially I find myself imagining most archeology of stone as a foundation for a greater structure that has degraded. The thing is though that these stones are large. Think about something that might have survived, a stone screw or nails. These things are so small that unless you are looking for them your likely to miss them. Another thing I think about is the, "downstream" approach. When looking for small artifacts like stone screw and nails I imagine the erosion that would have moved them to a different location. So here is this structure. Where would wind, water, and time have moved them to? Not looking at the structure itself but at where the pieces that still might remain of the structure be? Where did the river of time carry them? Lastly, the pangaea is always fresh in my mind. That human migration from a supercontinent has to be considered. What this means is that, for example, if early civilizations existed in pangaea then the artifacts your looking for in terms of evolution and the origin of humanity are likely severed between different continents. I want to say something about the origin of humanity and human migration. Unpopularly the climate of evolution was cold. Very very cold. Imagine an evolution of hybernation. A human species evolving as ice and glaciers melted. And I arrive at something quite different as humanity breaths it's first breath from the ocean. A bear. A hibernating ocean and land fairing animal in a cave. Theory of the yeti, sasquatch and bigfeet can't be ignored. Whist humanity freezes in the thaw I think about time. And ...if I could examine the evolution of humanity at it's origins where would I be? Antarctica. I would be a creature evolving to live on an earth that most closely resembles Antarctica. So I try to find time. To see what is the future of humanity and where is the past and geologically the possibility of time travel to a different time becomes possible. Not exactly how you might imagine it. But it terms of geology the past and possibly the futures of earth. And I let that guide my science and discovery. So where exactly are we as a humanity? We are at an intersection. Some, we, or I am becoming conscious. Becoming an intelligent lifeform. I am intelligent life. And in this is the knowledge that the future must be guided by intelligence. And thusly be responsible for the future.
A lot in fact almost all so called "Experts" believe humans have only existed on this planet for a hundred thousand years at most. I believe we have been here much much longer! There is another untold fact, they have been "repairing" this site for years. Putting some stones upright and setting them in concrete and using cranes to put some of the horizontal slabs back. Google it, there are photographs to show the work, the latest in the sixties.
The repairs should tell us that the stones are eroding too far to be natural ones. Only artificial stones will erode so much in a few thousand years. These stones were allegedly quarried from a bedrock site. Is the bedrock eroding? I think it is worthwhile to find out.
Stonehenge can't be sinking at 0.2 inches per year, because after 4000 years it would have sank 800 inches or 66.6 feet. And the tallest stone is 30 feet tall, perhaps another 8 to 10 feet below the surface, it would all be underground by now.

Well, it was once locally reported that a lorry had lost control on the (then) nearby highway and crashed into Stonehenge, knocking down many of the stones. I think this was back in the 1920s.

What is the most curious fact to me is it appears that Stonehenge was built by two different people. Started by the Anatolian farmers, who arrived about 4000 BC and from 3000 to 2600 built Stonehenge with the Blue Stones from Wales. And then the Steppe people who arrived around 2600 BC and may have been the ones who raised the larger Sandstone rocks from about 16 miles away.
The Steppe people suddenly largely replaced the Anatolian farmers, probably mostly from the plague and not warfare, resulting in a now population of about 1 % original European farmers, 9 % Anatolian farmer and 90 % Steppe people. It is curious to me that the new Steppe people decided to continue the tradition of building Stonehenge.

I have been examining the design for Greek and Roman columns and the placement of the stones suggests earlier architecture. The interesting thing about exams of primitive structures and architecture is that anything that was built out of animal fur, wood, or biodegradable material would have been deteriorated to the point of unrecognizable quality.
Imagine for instance a larger wooden and animal structure that was built on it. A second floor for example. The flooring would have degraded to the point of dust. The wooden dowels used as wooden nails and screws would have vanished. The sun shining directly over the, "windows" and covered with animal skins and wooden shutters. Degraded by time to the point of non recognized dust.
The point of it is that just because there is little evidence of a culture that doesn't mean that one didn't exist.
In primitive structures there is an entire evolution of bone tools, animal skins, wooden nails and structures that is basically gone.
Anytime I see a ancient structure I think to myself, "what would have been here or what could have been here that was eroded.
Essentially I find myself imagining most archeology of stone as a foundation for a greater structure that has degraded.
The thing is though that these stones are large. Think about something that might have survived, a stone screw or nails. These things are so small that unless you are looking for them your likely to miss them.
Another thing I think about is the, "downstream" approach. When looking for small artifacts like stone screw and nails I imagine the erosion that would have moved them to a different location.
So here is this structure. Where would wind, water, and time have moved them to? Not looking at the structure itself but at where the pieces that still might remain of the structure be? Where did the river of time carry them?
Lastly, the pangaea is always fresh in my mind. That human migration from a supercontinent has to be considered.
What this means is that, for example, if early civilizations existed in pangaea then the artifacts your looking for in terms of evolution and the origin of humanity are likely severed between different continents.
I want to say something about the origin of humanity and human migration. Unpopularly the climate of evolution was cold. Very very cold. Imagine an evolution of hybernation. A human species evolving as ice and glaciers melted. And I arrive at something quite different as humanity breaths it's first breath from the ocean.

I believe we have been here much much longer! Possibly millions of years, just think how many civilisations could have rose and then fell into literal dust in that time frame!

There is another untold fact, they have been "repairing" this site for years. Putting some stones upright and setting them in concrete and using cranes to put some of the horizontal slabs back. Google it, there are photographs to show the work, the latest in the sixties.
The repairs should tell us that the stones are eroding too far to be natural ones. Only artificial stones will erode so much in a few thousand years. These stones were allegedly quarried from a bedrock site. Is the bedrock eroding? I think it is worthwhile to find out.
I wouldn't say it's an 'untold fact'. This information as been in every book on the site for decades.
Stonehenge can't be sinking at 0.2 inches per year, because after 4000 years it would have sank 800 inches or 66.6 feet. And the tallest stone is 30 feet tall, perhaps another 8 to 10 feet below the surface, it would all be underground by now.

What I cant figure out is, how are some of the stones missing? I mean they must weight 20 ton each. If you've got enough people to shift one then why not take the lot? And it's hardly as if you could pinch one and not get noticed by the locals.

Just checked on Google Earth at its closest point the path is 10.7 metres from the nearest stone. NOT 50! Yes it is the original. The work done in 1958 was repair work to make it more stable and to raise some of the stones that had fallen. It's all been very well documented in many publications, so it's not a mystery.
