  • Ben Weinman (Dillinger Escape Plan) shows off the LTD Xtone PS-1. As Ben explains, a semi-hollow guitar might be just what you need, even for heavy music. More info on the PS-1 at www.espguitars.... .

When playing at volume with a decent amount of gain, you actually can get pretty good sustain out of a semi-hollow body. I use my Epiphone Sheraton that way all the time. Though I should say it's not so much sustain as it is harmonic feedback which sounds the same as sustain. Nevertheless, it gives the same effect

Just in the hand this guitar will immediately put some off but it doesn't take long to charm you. The pickups are kind of perfect and I actually found myself using a neck pickup regularly despite my typical distaste for it on most guitars. All of the pickup options are useful and characterful. Also, the semi-hollow aspect for good or bad really doesn't have much impact that I can tell in the tone. However it also doesn't shriek with feedback like other semi-hollow bodied guitars I've owned or played. I play super tight and punchy high gain tones through it and really you actually can tell something is different in your metal tones. Just like a spice of organic nature or something, I don't know. It's there but it is definitely very metal and despite what you'd think, the nature of how you can't help to play this is very percussive and inspires use of many modern technique. The quality is above it's price as far as it's function, but it's not going to be a centerpiece of beauty after a while as they had to cut corners in the quality of the finish. For my money, I'd rather they did than have unreliable electronics or cheap pickups or a bad neck/fretboard. I would consider even getting a second as it just sits well as one of the guitars I reach for regularly (Along w/ American Tele, Gibson Les Paul Studio, and my PRS Custom 22 which beside the Gibson are well modded).

Might be the guitar I'm looking for. I try to play more of the 60's underground type music. My M-10 is just maybe too metal?

It gives a more controlled sounding alt. pick. He's got really good technique, believe it or not. The man is a genius.

By tight attack, is that indicative of the action also? I was looking into something between a smooth electric feel, and unplugged sound preferably with a wide fretboard.

for a real shred by Ben Weinman watch a live version of Weekend Sex Change from 2012 (or maybe earlier). He always does an improv solo about a minute in

What's the point of having a semi-hollow body with the music you're playing? Was it music you're playing or you're just doing an exercise because there was no feeling to it.

there isn't a semi hollow body chapman, although food for thought.

People keep on either saying the player sucks or defending him. Look, the only thing weird about this video is him playing that style of this type of guitar. Shredding is all well and good if you're into it, but it sounds out of place coming out of a semi-hollowbody guitar.

he plays fine but i've always learned that you never play from you elbow always from the wrist. and john petrucci says the same in his instructional videos.

I know??? I need to play one and if this is true I need to buy it. Wes Borland also had that Signature semi or full hollowbody and he also said he didn't understand why people got feedback 🤔

when he's alternate picking really fast he does it from his elbow but it should be with his wrist... horrible technique.
but he gets it done so wathever i gues but i used to get hell from my teacher if i did that.
