I setup my hot cues pretty much the same for the first layer but the second layer will be something i will try more of. This is a great video because it shows how creative you can be without being too complicated. Beginners will love this. Keep up the good work!
@@BMac Don't know if you already figured it out but within Controller Settings you can set it so it's set to pause after you hit the hot cue or continue playing
I have my cue points color coded, so for instance, Red= 4beat, yellow=8, blue=16 and so on.. this has helped me tremedously, so ill know that section of the song, is X amount of beats, so ill know if i need to loop it, or hit the cue point a second or 3rd time.. I saw this tip from someone elses video, and has helped me big time.. hope that will help other DJ's out there... "Need life to a Party, MUSIC is the KEY"
Like a few on here I set cues and color code them by bars, drops, builds, breaks and outros. But this method takes it to another level! It really encourages you to do live mixes instead of start to end mixing. Thanks Jamie! Going to apply to my tracks.
I am a year late here! Amazing hot cue video. I am brand new Serato DJ user and you just illustrated the ability to do tremendous remixes using this method. I've got a long way to go setting up my library. Thank you so much
Knocked it out the park again mate! I was getting so bored with just mixing from track to track even though I try to do it creatively… never learnt hot cues so I really think this will bring the creativity back 🙌 legend
As a new dj I used to never set up hot cues. Just blend beginning and endings. Now my mixes are cleaner and I feel I have more control and fun with mixes. It’s like driving a manual car.
I set up my hot cues quite similar. I always set one in the first beat of the track (green) then one when the bassline comes in (yellow) one in the first break (blue) another one in the drop (red) and finally one as an emergency hot cue in case I'm running out of time and the transition ain't over yet. Apart from that in RB I create smart and useful loops containing just vocals, a nice percussion or a good synth. This way you can play a lot more with your tracks, create powerful mashups, interesting phrases or simply mix smoothly between tracks.
I usually set 2 loop cues in order to mix in - mix out, also i've a hot cue on the first break and first drop and the other oner are usually loops from vocals and the outro section, so far its' been quite useful for me
Very interesting to see how other DJs use hot cues. I think we have a similar technique, I reserve hot cues specifically for parts I want to chop and play around with just as you have shown, and reserve cue points for all the major parts that I might want to skip to (intro, first beat, break, breakdown, buildup, drop, third beat, fourth beat, wind down, outro) so cue points for me are the downbeat of the familiar sections found throughout all tracks, it's structure and my hot cues for creative chopping and stabs, etc. I like the term "Performance Hot Cues" this is the only thing I use my hot cues for where as I said regular cue points may be at the same place as a hot cue sometimes, but those are not meant for jumping to on the fly in a live performance they are only used for navigation. Absolutely love this and if I could recommend any video out there for this technique specifically I think your video is one of the better ones. Nice job!
very nice tutorials. I used to play vinyls and really mixed old school but then I bought a startup model Pioneer ddj controller and had the opportunity to make songs shorter and put some effects on them but basically sticked to the old ways apart from that. But the way the potetial for completely remixing with some special techniques like that last one really opens a whole new experience for a dj doensn't it. All I'm saying is I'm going to make a mix this afternoon for a contest and I'm going to apply it for sure!
Thanks Jamie - this is pretty advanced for a beginner like me. At the moment I prefer the Phil Harris method. That focuses on getting entry and exit points right and less on the performance aspects. This is something to aspire to!
Love this technique. I've been loosely using left to right for song phrases with vocal bits far right for play over transitions. It's been confusing as I didn't have a good relationship of what top-bottom in the left-right clusters represented. I'm gonna switch over to your technique. Bit of a studious noob so I have a bunch of clean up of old cues. Oh well, sometimes tidying up old work offers strong reinforcement for finding a great technique and sticking to it. 🙏 Thanks -- as always -- for your tips. Time for this custodian to clean up hot cue debris on Aisle EDM! 😁
Oh Wow, that’s Awesome Jamie!! Thank you much for sharing your expertise!! I’m new to DJ controllers, just got a new DDJ-400. Can’t wait to be able to step up to be at least half as good, as you are one day. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Great video. Always enjoy Crossfader videos and how Jamie carefully explains things especially for beginners. I'm using the DDJ800 so this has given me some more ideas. Need more examples like this using similar notable current tracks and the same controller 🙂👍
The performance side of your video is interesting, it makes viewers want to be more creative while they play, which is a good thing, so shout out to you for that. Having said that, I think the way you start explaining where you place your first cue points is a bit confusing and intricate in my opinion. Fair enough, you did say that your way wasn't the only way. However, for beginners out there watching your video, I think you should start off by saying that the most important cue points should be at the beginning of the intro and the choruses which should be used for traditional mixing. After you've got that out of the way, you can start taking it a step further and start talking about more creative mixing like you did! Sorry if that looked patronizing, just wanted to give you a pedagogical tip. Keep up the good work though, your videos are usually very interesting. Big up!
Very useful information! I have the SX2 and I set up two hot cues one on the first beat and another one 16 bars after the first beat, then another one 16bars before the breakdown for phrase mixing, and one on the outro but I feel that I can’t mix very quick so that will be helpful 🎧✌️
Excellent video! I got a similar type of system but this video really got me thinking about it and I think I have to tweak it a bit for more practicality and creativity!!
Hi, thank you for this eye opener. So that's how you do it ;) Uptil now I have always used 8 pads for phrasing, and also adjust the phrases in rekordbox which is a tedious job, since the standard autophrasing is so badly detected. But there are two sections of 8 pads which you can toggle, I'm looking for the right knob on my ddj rzx controller to switch between them.... or maybe I have to change the mapping a bit.
Hi Jamie, quick question. Some Djs set the cues a few bars before a section to know when to mix in/out. In your example you set the cue points at the onset of the section. What is the advantage of each? I guess markers could be used for drop locations. I’m trying see which way would be best. Great videos, thank you!
Nice vid! Do you guys think the 4 buttons of the top row of the hot cues are enough to label the whole song? I would label 1st break, 1st drop, 1 buildup and the outro beat section. Do you think this is enough or is it important to label both drops, since some tracks have different drops, or the 2nd break?
Make video to show, how to make playlist with different songs and genes all together in one playlists ( for Party 🎉 of course 😁) and if you can do it with Traktor ist better. Thanks for everything 👍
Hi ! I have been watching your videos on Djing for a couple of years.I am from India. I use Pioneer's DDJ 1000 controller which comes with Rekordbox software. I usually play Bollywood remixes which are largely vocals with edm type beats. How I set my hot cues is....I put the 1st hot cue (coloured as blue) on the 1st beat of the song, then I put the 2nd hot cue (coloured as pink) where the chorus of the vocal begins. Followed by 3rd hot cue (coloured as blue) where the bridge section of the song begins, then the 4th hot cue (coloured as pink) where the verse of vocal begins…so on and so forth. The color instantly makes me know the content of the hot-cued parts of the song. For instance...blue for me stands for the beats...whereas pink for me is for vocals. Do let me know...how can I further improve setting up my hot cues.
This is interesting. What I do is, I put 8 bar hotcues in intro marking A and B and another 8 bar hotcue in start of drop and end of drop marking C and D. And then I mix intro of another song with C and D of this song.
May be a dumb question , with the beat grid some vocals start on an off beat, can you set hot cue to go off beat, or do you change the beat grid to match your vocals (Tho this affects the beat matching )
good stuff...hey i'm working on some special songs that requires more than 8-cuepoint and i've already got the hotcue-16 extension but i'm using DJC INP. 300 with 8 cuepoints buttons one each deack, how can i use it's 8 buttons for hotcue-16 extension? Thanks in advance.
Can you move existing hot cues to another position? For example if you find a better spot for the transition. I now have to delete the existing one and create a new one (adding colour and text again too)

Itsa Me DJ Mario do you know if Djay pro 2 has a function to change the color of your hot cues?
I USE THE SAME EXACT TECHNIQUE!! But i forgot what video I learned it from :(
Wow that’s very smart and incredibly helpful! Thank you
I do the same but i just add the beat count number instead of the color im too lazy to do the extra step.

Love your videos 👌🏼 When DJs share ideas with each other, amazing things happen 💕
One of the best video on hot cures! Thank you!
This was really helpful. Thank you for sharing. it will surely change the way I set hot cues and to look at a track with a different perspective.
I've been searching a video like this since I just bought my Prime 4. Thank you
Thanks Jamie - this is pretty advanced for a beginner like me. At the moment I prefer the Phil Harris method. That focuses on getting entry and exit points right and less on the performance aspects. This is something to aspire to!
Been waiting for this video! Thanks!
Great tutorial! How would you recommend to setup hot cues for hiphop/ r&b genres where the phrasing might not be as obvious as typical edm structure ?
Teacher number one! Thanks from Italy😉

Use the method you're most confident with and then start to add this in on the odd track you know has some parts you can play with
I have found this incredibly useful. Thank you.
Very cool, itching to pull my decks out now

The video title is "how pro djs set up their hot cues for creative mixes" not how to blend two songs as a beginner.
Great Teaching I always learn something from your videos Thank You!
That was very helpful, thank you. Nice work explaining the work flow.
Tremendously helpful and extremely creative; A++++ strategy and a true insight as to how to get really creative. Thank you enormously
Thank you. It’s short and more informative easy understand ❤😊
This is a massively helpful tip.

How do you get the song to keep playing after you your press a cue point? Mine always pauses and I can’t find out how to fix it anywhere.
Great tip!
And don't forget to mix in key for an awesome mix ;)
Thank you for ideas. Can wait to set some hot cues
This was an excellent tutorial, thank you for this advice!
Glad it was helpful!

your a G... keep up the quality bro
This is awesome 👏
Really good video.
Very good trick, support!
HIYA JAMIE, what setting do you prefere on your crossfader for this kinda mixing... love your tutorials.
this was awesome
Very neat! Thanks for sharing
useful info.. great!!!
That’s crazy, I just started labeling my hot cues on my 1000 today!

Excellent tutorial, nice way to transition between tracks
Good video, well explained.
Thank you!
cool vid hope you get to 1 mln :)
Great video! 06:57 Maybe we can take that as criteria: if we really can't find 8 Hot Cues in a track, does it really deserve to be in our set-list?
thanks, u are amazing !
Do your own thing is the lesson.
Great tutorial

Do you think this is enough or is it important to label both drops, since some tracks have different drops, or the 2nd break?
This is enough, especially if you have a controller with only 4 pads, like Numark Party Mix mk2.
Awesome, thanks for that.
More live videos djing to a live crowd , your last video of it done so well
Can we get a video like this for hip hop
Thank u!
This makes me very sad I only have four hot cues on my XDJ-RX! Thank you for the tips. :) I've been struggling with setting them.
This is a very good way to set up your cue points guys! 😊🎧
Make video to show, how to make playlist with different songs and genes all together in one playlists ( for Party 🎉 of course 😁) and if you can do it with Traktor ist better.

I thought I was the only one who mixed like this. Good to see Im not the only one!

Hi Jamie, how do you change the color pad on rekordbox? Thanks
Brilliant
thanks Jamie
How do you get the song to keep playing after you your press a cue point? Mine always pauses and I can’t find out how to fix it anywhere.
What quantize value do you recomend for hotcues?
Can you sets up those creative mixing on a 2000 nxs2
Thank you
Genius
How do you speed up the hot cue buttons so you can press them quickly (rx2) thank you
So once the hot keys are set, you can use these at any time for different tracks? Because of the 4,816 bars etc
This is interesting. What I do is, I put 8 bar hotcues in intro marking A and B and another 8 bar hotcue in start of drop and end of drop marking C and D. And then I mix intro of another song with C and D of this song.
May be a dumb question , with the beat grid some vocals start on an off beat, can you set hot cue to go off beat, or do you change the beat grid to match your vocals (Tho this affects the beat matching )
how about virtual dj software
You could make a very nice mashup out of these 2 songs!
How do you get them to only play wile your finger is on them?
good stuff...hey i'm working on some special songs that requires more than 8-cuepoint and i've already got the hotcue-16 extension but i'm using DJC INP. 300 with 8 cuepoints buttons one each deack, how can i use it's 8 buttons for hotcue-16 extension? Thanks in advance.
does this work on rekordbox XDJ?
What’s a break?
Useful
I just sold my sb2 after 4 years of flawless service, so I was used to having 4 hot cues.
Can you move existing hot cues to another position? For example if you find a better spot for the transition. I now have to delete the existing one and create a new one (adding colour and text again too)
Sadly you can't move them, only delete and place a new one
@@Crossfader thanks for your reply anyway 👍
Nice
When you set up these hot cues, are they permanently saved to the song? So you can hot cue all your let’s say 50 songs before you start mixing?
