It's time for another TMF Tour episode! This time I'm staying in the UK slightly closer to home and touring the top biking roads of the North of England courtesy of Simon Weir's book "Bikers Britain - The Tours". In this second episode I make my way over the challenging Hardknott Pass and on to Ullswater, rumoured to be Britain's most beautiful lake......

Another Great vid.
It's grim Up Norf as you've seen .... living locally, for the last 30 odd years, me and biking mates have ridden every inch of the Lakes and Dales a million times over, and it never disappoints, with the Scottish Borders and Northumberland only an hour away, Biking heaven in the UK.
What people don't realise is, just how steep some those hardnott sections are. A test for anyones Biking Virginity 😂
Cheers Roj 🇬🇧
Yes I'm not sure I'd fancy it on my Goldwing with the Mrs on the back....
You been up to St Mary's Loch and through Eskdalemuir? Cracking ride on a calm sunny day.
Dear Mr. Flyer, as a wannabe born again (haven't ridden for 20 years, too broke to buy even a moped) I'd like to thank you for allowing me to ride vicariously through your videos. I particularly enjoyed the time we 'spent together' on the NC500 and I've been looking forward to the Hardknott Pass to Ullswater video since Part 1. Seriously, though, your videos are excellent. You're a very fair reviewer and the range of bikes you get your backside on keeps your channel really interesting. Oh, hope you're well, by the way.
Thank you sir - very kind of you...and yes very well thanks.
I'm commenting on this 3 years after it's been made, but I had to watch it be done on my dream bike! I did this route but the opposite way around, starting with Wrynose Pass, on Monday. The only difference being that I did it on my teeny Lexmoto Viper 125. I also recorded it and uploaded, but your weather certainly looks better than mine!
The wide angle cameras definitely flatten the land! The scenery is beautiful. I'm heading back out there with 2 people from a club I ride with, also both on 125s. A Kawasaki Z125 and a Honda CB125R. It should be a fun day lol
Hard Knott, Wrynose & Kirkstone pass all in one video. Nice
Cheers David - and thanks for watching - TMF
We did this two up full luggage on a Triumph Trophy SE! Was scary without doubt at times but worth the ride. All bikers should experience this pass before taking on the big ones in Europe.
Nice one Sean!
I did the pass yesterday on a tiger 800xc with luggage and to be honest it didn’t really live up to the hype. I did two runs and the first run, free of cars was easy. The second run I got stuck behind a couple of cars who were crawling round the hairpins and so I had to slip the clutch / ride the rear break. Which made it way harder. So my conclusion is the faster you go the easier it is. Fast on the straights, hard on the brakes to squash the front tire and keep the bike levelish for the hairpins and keep momentum through the corners, whilst staying very loose on the bike and letting it wriggle around a bit
Do it in the winter mate when it’s soaking and slippy on a sports bike
did this route on the 29/7 17 after watching this video i just had to give it a go ,, well done to all who have done this pass it was very tough but very rewarding , thanks to TMF for the video
+Steve one Brilliant, thanks Steve!
Loved the Hardknott pass trip thanks for the memory i did this about 16 years ago in the height of the season in a car and i have to say would never do it again. Loved the commentary actually loved it all thanks again.
You're welcome Linda - glad to have you along!
The pleasure was all mine.
The UK has so much to offer.... when the weather is being nice! :-)
Agreed 100%
Part of my favourite ride from windermere over kirkstone along ulswater and up the hartside awesome ride on my ducati 899
Did hardnot and wrynose pass back in 1990 on a gsxr 750 with camping gear attached. Then cycled it in 1998 this takes me back to some great days and great memories cheers.
Thanks for watching!
Simply stunning .
Cheers Tim...
I feel really lucky watching this video that all these roads are on my doorstep. Some really nice roads, great views, friendly people just a shame about the poor toad conditions.
I would just like to say a massive thank you. My father and I have been wishing to adventure to the Lake District for a while. Finally, a couple of weeks ago our diaries alined and because of YOUR video we had an a truly amazing and breathtaking experience on the Hardknott Pass. I wouldn’t have known about it if it wasn’t for you and all your helpful tips and directions along the way were super helpful! I look forward to looking through your other adventures to get ideas for the next road trip. 👍🏍
Fantastic ride I liked the hard knot pass and the lakes were superb looking forward to next weeks ride many thanks tony
Cheers Tony - stay tuned!
Did the Hardknott Wynose pass a few weeks ago on my T100 water cooled, unfortunately got a puncture at the top of the Wynose pass no phone signal, had to hitch a lift from a kind Swiss family too the nearest Inn, my breakdown had to phone 8 recovery company's before anyone would take the job on, so a long wait but still a fantastic road, hundred times better than any boring motorway
Take a puncture repair kit with you next time 😊 £30 well spent. It'll let you get back down safely.
So lovely when one stops and revels in the silence and stillness as a contrast.
I agree....
Very much enjoyed riding along taking in the beautiful English countryside. Well done!
Thank you :0)
Another cracking ride Tmf... proof that there's more to life than the daily grind . :(
Thank you Robert - and very true!
Good morning TMF thank you for video and I must say what some beautiful scenery and Take Care.
+Wayne Compton Thanks as ever Wayne, just remind me where you're watching from??
Good Evening TMF Thanks for your reply I live in Beautiful Herefordshire, very lucky right on the boarder England/Wales . Take Care.
The video definitely flattens out the gradient on Hardknott. Looks like you chose a good time to go over usually loads of cars when I have been. Mid week out of school holidays is best.
...as was this, the thought of doing this in the height of the holidays....no thanks!
I cannot believe those roads are considered two way roads over there. That's incredible!
+Sean Frank Tell me about it!
Looks like a perfect snowmachine / snowmobile winter ride. Hardknott Pass
Yes agreed!
Watched your Applecross video, then re-watched this. Glad I did. Done hardknott a few times now,and really enjoy it. Applecross looked a bit dull compared. Saved me a long journey now 👍. Love the lakes ,been a few times and still keep finding new roads on every trip. Got a few lined up for next time, can't wait 😁👍. Such a shame you have limited time, you miss some awesome photo opportunities. Next time 😁.
Love the videos, perfect rainy Sunday viewing.
Don’t be put off by my video - Applecross is way more spectacular than Hardknott!
Nice one TMF certainly cheered me up on a Friday lunchtime, taking a break from fitting a boiler. Glad you had nice weather and the pass to yourself you lucky boy. Look forward to the next vid.
All the best
JJ
Cheers JJ - rest assured the weather deteriorated!
Rode this just yesterday on my GS with luggage attached, in the opposite direction. It's true when you say the video doesn't show just how steep the gradient really is. Luckily I got a near clear road to keep the momentum going, didn't fancy having to stop on the way up. Great video as always TMF...
Thank you Ali - and well done on negotiating the pass!
Been waiting for this one Mr Flyer, steepest climb in Europe is the Hardknott. I was told the reason why the Hardknott is so bumpy is before the Second World War it was unmetaled (no tar mac), during the WW2 it was used for tank training, after which it was Tarmacked, but lorries could not get up so small batches in vans were sent up there, apparently the bumps are 9'' s apart (flat part of the tank track, rut is where the track couples to next part of the tank track) don't know how true what I was told but does make a interesting ride !!
Great story that Vince, let's stick with it - cheers...
Very beautiful place ..you so lucky...snake pass in Derbyshire my normal run when weather nice..if not done it yet ..it's recommend
absolutely stunning..thanks for sharing.take care.
Cheers Myke...
Really Beautiful, I’ve never been to the Lake District. Must go sometime.
You must!
Also get yourself up the A686 Melmerby to Hartside Top.
Only worth doing when there's next to no traffic, so go super early (5am-6am).
Hardknott & Wrynose Pass are beautiful and certainly a challenge worth doing. My friend and I did your route in the other direction last year on our pair of 40yr old BMW R100RS. We went coast to coast from Whitby (Robin Hood Bay) to St Bees Cumbria via Nth York Moors, Buttertubs Pass etc and then the Hardknott & Wrynose, superb riding the whole way and our 40yr old bikes lapped it up. 😊 (I agree that whilst Applecross Pass is visually more stunning the HardKnott & Wrynose are harder to ride!)
Sounds like a top trip!
@@TheMissendenFlyer it was 😊 We then headed down through Wales from Cumbria so just a ‘little lap’ around England having started in Cornwall! I’ve just been over to the Ardennes on my BMW K1 after seeing your ‘5 countries in 5 days’ trip and the roads and scenery there were superb and, as you said, all within a few hours of the tunnel 👍
Well done you on doing the hardknot pass on that big heavy thing. I've done it 2 up on the first iteration suzuki burgman 400.
It was a piece of cake iirc!
Another cracking video, and another one that's tugging on the old heartstrings - for many years my wife and I would head to the Lakes at least once a year and we would normally base ourselves at the campsite next to Brotherswater on the Kirkstone Pass. Some fantastic hill-walking to be done around there.
Agreed - a lovely part of the world.....
This is where I spent most of my childhood holidays. We did those passes in my dad's clapped out 1973 Vauxhall Viva with the temp gauge on max and steam coming from the radiator. Happy days!
I used to love the speedo in the Viva - we could never afford one and had to make do with a Triumph Herald....
Great video tmf,,,, we have just completed a 4 day tour of the lakes and passes. thanks to your video.cheers ja
+Jason Garner Nice one!
Some great videos of the tour of the lake district. I live around 1 hour away from the lakes. So lucky to have some amazing roads like that in the uk. Great vlogs keep up the great work.
Thanks Chris - you’re a lucky man having access to that lot on your doorstep....
TheMissendenFlyer yes I sure am but your lucky to have such an amazing bike collection. I have been off a bike for around 3 years now and it's because people like you and watching the vlogs that have inspired me to get back into biking so thank you 😁
Well I think this is the best one yet, brilliant! What a great road, looks great fun.
And an ELO fan as well, most impressed.
I am a recent convert since being forced to see them at the 02 last year, brilliant concert....the Wembley one this year wasn't quite so good from an atmosphere point of view.....did you go???
I wish I could see them, been a huge fan since '77. I normally avoid stadium concerts as a rule though, unless it's The Who.
Another fantastic video Mr F what a stunning place to ride..
Agreed, and thanks for watching....
I remember when my husband first took me up Hardknott Pass. Unbelievably scary but well worth it. If you are looking for a challenge then do the pass twice in a day.. We did in a car and broke the exhaust when we ground the car out in one of the dips in the middle section. Oh how to be young. Love your videos though. Safe riding.
Thanks Wendy, though I had to read "I remember when my husband first took me up Hardknott Pass. Unbelievably scary but well worth it." ;0)
Thanks Andy, I will be avoiding these roads two up on a K1600GT in May when i visit the lakes. well done mate, awesome ride and vid.
No problem 👍...enjoy your trip!
Haha! That was great. I couldn't decide whether your bike screen was shaking because of the bumpy roads on the passes or from you quaking in your boots! I know the feeling though. Did it many years ago on a sports bike with rock hard suspension and very little steering lock. Quite an experience and certainly worth doing.
I think it was a bit of both!
This is by far the most awesome ride I have seen.
Fantastic. Well done Sir. Right bike for that pass too.
Thank you :0)
Another great film TMF of the Hardknot Pass, brought back great memories doing this in 2001 on a VFR800, well done!
Thanks Paul....
Very enjoyable. You've got a nice mix of banter, scenery and biking nous. About right I'd say. C+ for Geography though TMF Minor... 450,000 yrs ago the glaciers actually came as far south as the M4 'line' before retreating, around 1K high over the Midlands for example. That's why we get so much boulder clay and pebbles on the tops of our small hills ;-)
Ah well that depends on which ice age you're referring to!
Indeed.
Beautiful. Can't wait to cross the water, and do it myself. Thanks Flyer.
My pleasure - thanks for watching!
Warm memories on this one. It was my first major biketrip. Never rode on de left side of the road before. Never even abroad on a bike. Didn't have a GS but some sporty Suzuki back then. Satnavs didn't exist so quite exciting all of this.
Since then I have been to all of the British isles (except Isle of man !!!). I just love England and Ireland. In spite of the weather :)
Cheers
How about the island of Ireland? ...I think that counts as one of the British Isles....??
Sure. Been there. Actually might be my favourite.
Pictures on www.marctelkamp.nl.
You may not have deserts there but you have some beautiful country, great series.
Yes it's not all bad :0) Thanks for watching - TMF
Some of my favorite roads.. I've spent many happy hours riding Kirk stone pass and hartsde.. Hartside cafe is the no1 Sunday blast for many bikers from the north East and Yorkshire!
Nice one!
Well it was... It burned down
@@RawTopShot yeah, gas bottles went up apparently.. (Hmm..) There's still a scran van there i think in the summer months
Nicely produced video, very well done TMF those gopro's really do flatten hills though. 😋
Don't they make me look like a whimp!
Just did this yesterday... watched this first (I’ve done the exact same tour but in reverse to how you did it) on my GS and did Hardnott...with full luggage and gear! The camera certainly doesn’t show you how steep it is does it! I too was so glad to find an open road! Those two steep/tight hairpins were scary!
Well done! Great ride though eh?
TheMissendenFlyer it was awesome!
It's video's like this and your North Coast trip that inspired me to learn to ride at 51 year old. I hope to do this route sometime over the next couple of months.
Wow that's fabulous Alan, really pleased to hear that! Enjoy and ride safe!
Hi TMF your right it is easier going down than up. I have found going up Zig Zag hill is worse purely because of the surface. At least you had a nice day for it, nice video.
Thanks John - good to hear from you as ever....TMF
I like how you were surprised by the car driver that reversed for you. That's what we do up north, much more friendly than darn sarf....
I was scared watching it, I was think about what would be the ideal bike for roads like that, I have a Tiger but it's tall and heavy, good low centre of gravity though. Anyway I'm being watching all your tour videos, Wales, Scotland, Western isles etc.. Nice, fair enjoyed Wales, so beautiful and lovely roads. I think that was the best scenery I'd seen out of all your UK tours. After all that, I was supposed to just be saying, thanks for the nice vids so thanks for the nice vids.:))
I have indeed done it on super blackbird with passenger and luggage I can tell you I've no idea how I did it hard work that's for sure . Might have to try it on the new Versys 1000 . Hats off to you sir
I imagine the Versys would be fine on it....
Yeah enjoyed that very much excellent commentary and scenery is stunning.
Your audio set up is great you can hear everything nice and clear including the clunky gearbox of the GS!! Engine sounds good though haha!!
Surprised it didn't rain on you going over the pass.
There's time yet Dave, another couple of episodes to come!
That countryside is so beautiful. Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Jim - glad you liked it...
Yes the struggle goes to Ambleside and No you won't have a problem. From memory, I left the UK a long time ago, it is pretty straight in comparison to Hardknott Pass. I was born in area I used to go over there on a regular basis even the single cylinder BSA B33 with sidecar had no problems. That's apart from being slow winding up in 1st gear
Great video as always. Wrynose pass rather unremarkably takes its name from wrynose hill it passes. Shame you didn't stop at the Roman fort on the top. There is also a byway going for miles next to the fort.
Looking forward to part three...
If only I had that local intel at the time....! Thanks for stopping by and do stay tuned for part 3 late next week....TMF
Well done sir! A true adventure on an Adventure bike! Must make a note to do that route when I'm back in UK. Looking forward to the next installment (after I've been to Avignon for the weekend).
Nice one Steve, I love Avignon, been on many a flying trip up there (I say up as I'm currently south of you in Italy ;0)
TheMissendenFlyer enjoy Italy. Actually I'm in Avignon to get the Moroni serviced. If you're anywhere near Milan you should get down to the Moroni factory and have a test ride on the new ZZ (before any if the British press). A TMF coup!
I think at 7:27 was where some other vlogger (and his pillion) fell on his way up. I think he di a u-turn and went back. Beautiful countryside - fantastic views.
+Deadly1958 I'll have another watch....
I dropped it on the corner at 7:19 (on video). I also turned back, although was just to check on my biking mate who decided not to do it. I did go back up though (without my pillion, she was a bit skittish after the fall)
Just had time to catch up on your videos. I a have done the Hardknott twice now both two up one with full luggage as we were stating at the wool pack on the west side of the pass. one of my favorite places in the world.
Nice one :0)
I would like to do it again the way you did it as i have only done east to west. Keep up the good work. Next challenge is HardKnotts twin Rosedale Chimney Bank in Yorkshire
I agree with FENNER-G about your grunts and groans, that right hand hairpin at 7:23 is a tough one! I'm slipping the clutch in bottom gear for that one!
Exactly!
I went arse over tit on that bend last year (see earlier post). Should've been in 1st was in 3rd, oops!
Ahhhhhhh, Saturday morning breakfast, and a half hour update from you trip; set me up for the day!
Lovely weather. Those passes were an intense workout!
Great stuff, glad to have helped start your day!
You missed a great photo opportunity as you went over the stone bridge at the little village around 12 minutes in, such a beautiful place
+Ross Brewster Bother!
Excellent video TMF Lake District is wonderful makes me want to go there on my tiger 800, one day !
Hope you liked the ELO concert I certainly did fantastic. Look forward to the next instalment, good stuff.
I sure did - although I also saw them at the 02 last year and that was a better concert from an atmosphere point of view....great fun though.
Thank you for the pleasant ride. Always a joy to be out on a ride with you. When ever you come down to southern Germany give me a hint and we can do one together. Wish you great wind around your nose !
+Thomas Bärtl Thank you Thomas - not sure that phrase translates so well but I appreciate the kind sentiments!
TheMissendenFlyer more a breeze than a wind I guess 😂
Yes, that's better...
26:02 you just went past my mates house 😊👍
His dad's house (Patterdale Hall) is on the left, and he's on the right.
Patterdale Hall have some guest accommodation if you ever want somewhere interesting to stay 😊
Richard Wilson (best known for his portrayal as Victor Meldrew "I don't believe it!) interviewed them both on his TV series where he drove around the North of England a while back.
A little further on, in Glenridding is where "The Lakes" drama series was filmed (with John Sim). The "managers house" was another mates house, rented out for the filming; and just before that is an ex girlfriends house. 😊👍
As a recent university Geology graduate I can't help but correct you in that the greatest glacial extent was in fact as far south as Greenwich in London around 400,000 years ago. There is a lot of evidence down south for glacial activity however its not so easy to observe due to the topography generally being lower than that of the northern UK thus there was essentially less earth to erode leaving less prominent features. Apologies for that rant however, great video as always!
Always happy to be corrected Dan! Thanks for that.....
Great vid, thanks.
Ref pass hairpins, think of them as the same as the base/final turn - you have to look where the aircraft is going to be, not where it is going. Hairpins are the same - look through the corner...
Rgds
Glenn
Thanks for the tip!
There seems to be a lot of gouges in the tarmac on that hairpin presumably some have come a cropper on it
If I ever make it back to the U.K. This ride is on the list. I've got to go.
It's a good 'un John!
Looks like a fun place to ride
Yeah, sure is :0)
we have got one desert at Dungeness in kent. one of the longest stretches of shingle beach that is actually classed as a desert. great pub quiz question.
Is it really! Wild!!
Great video of the Hardknott & Rynose passes, as you say the GoPro doesn't do justice to the steep bends... I think you evening timing was a smart move, we did it midweek in June, but the passes were fairly busy midday. I survived the same route last month on a Harley Street Glide (I must be mad!!!). Love your tour videos.
Hats off to you sir! ...and yes, my timing was pretty perfect as far as I was concerned!
Ha ha, Hardnotts is a steep pass. I came a cropper on it in September of last year on my F800GS. I was fully loaded with luggage and it was lashing down with rain and blowing a gale. It was on the bend at 7:24 in your video. Thank god for crash bars. Only my ego was bruised. I also raced up it in the late 80's in a cycle race, it was carnage.
Aha, you're one of those cycle nutters then! :0) Well done for getting up it!
Alas still a cyclist, but not nuts anymore. Really enjoy the videos, honest and informative, keep up the great work.
Absolutely fantastic video my fellow red GS rider.
Good man Chris - you went for the faster red model too eh?
Can't wait for next Friday for part 3 👍🏻
...might even be Thursday due some logistical difficulties.....
Another great video , i'm no expert but i think the key to steep & tricky hairpins is lots of patience ( yes walking speed ) a nice low gear & low to the ground would be a bonus when meeting oncoming traffic on single track . That's why mopeds and scooters have no prob with this stuff ,ha
Yes agreed, light weight would be a bonus too (+ some skill!!)
Scooty Man -Honda Innnova in the fog ,Bealach Na Va. worth a look
I must say the 3 people that disliked this video need to get a life. The views and the experience is inspirational. I've been to the lakes many times and seen lovely views and windy roads but never the hardknott pass. This is certainly going to be near the top of the list. Great work with the videos. Ride safe.
Thanks for the kind comments - much appreciated! All the best - TMF
Your last comment on the vid - not a bad way to spend a Monday morning, let's get back on the bike. Quality
Glad you appreciated it :0)
I've climbed Hardnott Pass on an 1150GS from Cockley Beck with pillion and full luggage. We were baulked just before we reached the summit - so glad (not) for having a dry clutch :-(
Nothing that a RS Escort couldn't handle. Looks awesome.
True....
Beautiful scenery by the way
Thanks...
Absolutely adore the area of ullswater, climbed many of mountains in that area and the views from the top are just something else :D
Agreed - lovely spot...
Still the best most mindful commentary out there. Carry on.
Thank you Joe - very kind of you to say so!
One of the best videos you've done so far!
Thank you Pete!
great shots did the pass both ways in the car in July well worth a vist.
Not on the bike???
TheMissendenFlyer unfortunatly not I had my wife and daughter with me maybe next time on my st1050.
Yes the Hardknott Pass is always a challenge, but the views are amazing. The rough surface on some of the steep inclines is caused by the tarmac melting in hot weather and running down hill. I agree with you about a pillion!! Difficult enough going solo, but is a must do ride. I think it is recognised as being one of the most difficult roads to ride in Britain. The other road you mention "The Struggle" is well worth a ride, it comes out in Ambleside.
Yeah I must give that a go next time, just to have it ticked off - any road named "The Struggle" is asking to be tried....
Niceone mate, you were in my neck of the woods there. You're right about it not being much fun in summer with all the tourists that don't know where they're going. I deliver to farms all around those areas, it's definitely no fun in the truck, especially up the struggle to that pub who I regularly deliver too. I believe Wrynose is a Norse word from the derived meaning of male horse, something to do with the horse power needed to get up, over and through the fells.
Tcrs fella ✊
Excellent, I knew someone would know what it meant! Cheers as ever - TMF
Simply stunning....... the video quality is one of the best I've seen
Great - pleased about that Colin... :0)
Have you had ROSPA or IAM training your riding style is very professional (solid white left out, bit late with the throw backs)? Your comment about Scottish drivers like the French, seem to be so considerate to motorcyclist is so true!
No I haven't but funnily enough you're not the first to ask that question - must be the way I was taught to ride bikes, full credit to my riding instructor if I'm doing it right!
You made light work of the pass sir, seems you picked a good evening for it. Great Vlog as ever
Thank you Dean, yes I was very lucky with the timing, imagine this on a busy sunny Saturday!
I would rather not, especially on the hairpins. Or like I did the applecross, very limited visbility and Scotalnds finest weather (not). Keep up the good vlogging work!
This is where DCT comes into its own.
Another good video. I'm now warming to the Gs a do it all bike .My kawa sx would be a handful on that pass in fact since I got it its a handful on normal bends 👍
The GS is THE do it all bike as far as I'm concerned....brilliant work horse, love mine....
Being relatively local I think that's the easier direction to do it. Believe it or not these a stretch of the A595 about 200 yards long between Gosforth and Calder Bridge which if it gets blocked its a 70 or 80 mile detour over hardknott
Yikes!
Thanks for the incredible GoPro Video. Beautiful country and so well narrated. You need to come to the Willamette Valley of Oregon and have your mind blown. Actually all of Oregon will put a huge smile on your face. Cheers Mate!
Gods own country and my old stomping ground. Now relocated to North Wales which is none too shabby either but the Lakes is my first love when it comes to rides and roads......covered all those roads on numerous occasions on my push bike when I was younger but I've never been back with the Street Triple. Must do something about that one day!!
Definitely!
Fantastic, getting better each week, really enjoyed that one. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Mick - stay tuned!
