My drummer has a SPD-SX and has never used it. After watching these videos I think she’s about to start using it a lot. I love the ability to run a click with a pre count or some kind of voice note before hand. It’s given me a lot of ideas.
Just got a spd sx special to trigger certain parts of our backtracks so we can fill out the songs and don't have to run the full tracks. This is my first multipad. It has way more features han I realized. These vids are very helpful.
Thank you for the tutorial. I have never integrated acoustic drums with electronic and you made it easy for this un-techy guy to ease into this interface
Helpful uses! Definitely do more SPDSX lessons if you get the time. There are a lot of tutorials on how it can be used but very little on personal applications by gigging vets
@@TimBuell I know for me when I first got one and was looking up tutorials, it was basically how to load them and basic overview. What would have been great to have is a vid that covered the process from loading sounds, tweaking and adjusting, and then executing in a love situation. Just like a walk through of the steps and what you add efx wise. Just that add from verse to chorus you showed was super helpful. Stuff like that. 👍🏻
Very informative thanks Tim! More on SPDSx please. Maybe a run-through of your go-to/versatile samples for different scenarios and how you go about getting them?
Dude, I am right there with you on the cajon, etc. For guys that like using their hands (make your own jokes if you want) go for it. I may not be the greatest drummer/percussionist that ever lived (far from it) but like many, I can do a lot with sticks or mallets that I can't or don't want to do with my hands. Thanks for the video!
Yes please more lessons. I have acoustic and electronic drums. I need to go my Mum's small house to accompany her on piano (She is 85!) so I am buying the Spd sx tomorrow. Thanks for your help
Yeah! keep doing this SPD-SX lessons! i got one for my new elecrtonic project as track sampler, so its only vocals, the samples and my bass. Thanks! and keep it up man!
Hey Tim, That is really helpful, for sure ! I'd love to see more about the process of the sounds you added for example, but I trust you completely about making the videos differently to the ones already existing about that subject !
Very helpful video, Tim! I own a SPD-S and only ever used it for clips and bassdrops mostly. Still need to dive in and see what its capable of. I know it doesnt have all the features as the SX one does, but this video sure makes me want to explore the possibilites more regardless!
Hey Seth! I don't have a list from this video. A lot of it is stuff I've gotten from artists I've worked with and things like that. But several of them are samples made by I Want That Sound. I give more info on them at the front of this video: ruclips.net/video/MCPSXvqkMpA/видео.html
Hey are you able to make all the samples you played on that machine available for us. Been looking for those kind of sounds. (Toms, snap, claps) I would really appreciate it and probably other viewers as well.
I don't (I don't think haha). But I have a playlist of all my SPD-SX videos here: ruclips.net/p/PLBr1VnCd-VUP88IbYeUb1jZ00HTM9XVrd Might be something helpful in there.
Thanks for this! Owned a SPDSX in the past, now for a new project I was asked how I’d feel about Cajon... we share a similar vision on that instrument, so I’m back looking into a SPDSX again, to be able to still deliver what I’m used to, but not with a full kit! I’d love to see more vids on this topic; I think there are a lot of in depth reviews, maybe just show us your use, your samples, things you’ve learned! Anyway, love the chanel dude! Thanks for inspiring (:
@@TimBuell thank you and I will try , one more question, how do you make a beat pattern with all the sound that already have in spd sx and save it and become pattern loop and also can change the tempo anytime we want, without use any laptop or iPad, directly on spd sx, it will be helpful if you can make the video.
That's a good suggestion. Quickest tip I can give - Roland doesn't like the format of Logic's .wav file it outputs. So if you export your samples from Logic as a .wav, and then load them in iTunes and convert them to wave in iTunes - the Roland will be happy with your samples. (I realize now this is super confusing to type haha).
So Roland made the SPD-S before the SPD-SX and you can probably find used SPD-S pads for $150. Or you can find a used SPD-SX for cheaper. I know Yamaha and Alesis make similar products - but I've never used them so I can't speak to the quality.
Very informative. I'm thinking of getting one for studio recording but not sure how it would work connecting it to my Mac. Im using GarageBand for Mac and would like to physically play the drum parts in without going through trouble of mixing my kit. Any tips? Thanks.
To use the SPD-SX with your computer, you are probably in best shape if you connect the pad via MIDI into your computer. This gives you the most control and flexibility with what you record. You will need an audio interface to do this, but other than that it is fairly simple.
I just bought one of these, I HATE dealing with software, I have never played drums, but wanted this to add to my music from guitar. Where should I go to learn how to use this properly and learn to play?
I have several other videos on the SPD-SX, so I recommend watching all of those. haha. Once you are done, if you have specific questions I'd love to dive into those as well!
Hey man this was really useful we just got a Roland SPD-SX and I was wondering if there’s a video you’ve done to demonstrate how to put sounds on the pads? Trying to put some of my synth on there. Is that possible?
Tim hopefully you are still responding these days as I know this is an older video now - I am in 3 bands which all use backing tracks or clicks, and various effects separate from each other. I have been looking into this to make firing off backtracks reliable and easy, as well as programming snare bombs, electronics, kick triggering, etc all the fun stuff. My question is - can I set up “pages” for each band so that each “page” is that bands own backtracks linked to the pads and whatnot? Secondly - if I ran roland triggers independently into this - are those considered add ons or are those just cloned off of the pads? Meaning, can I have 9 pads and a kick trigger? OR is 9 outputs all you get, one pad would have my kick sample and be “linked” to my kick trigger? Thanks!
I liked this video, I know it’s from a while back. Not sure if you’re still talking requests. I’m just about to pull the trigger on buying one of these and I want to find out where and how to find samples to download.I’m interested primarily in percussion loops to run along with me playing my kit.
Hey Steve! This is an AWESOME question. I will absolutely be posting a video soon on this whole topic. Finding good samples is KEY and it can be a little tricky sometimes.
Hey Tim, do you always play the kick sounds with your sticks or do you also have a kick pedal that you bring along with your SPD SX?.. I love that you just use your sticks but I'm just curious if you also use a pedal and if so which pedal it is. Cheers
I don't use a kick trigger (just more to set up) haha. But roland makes several that would work for something like that. I recommend using one that requires a full kick pedal, not just a little switch you play. They hold up longer and are more realistic to play.
Great video! Have you ever used a kick drum / V-drum trigger with the SPD-SX? Like a Roland KD-10 or KT-10? I'm curious to know what it's like hitting a pad with a stick vs. using a kick drum trigger.
I have used those, but only a little. And they were never mine, they were always someone else's that I was using. But I can say that if you dial the sensitivity in, you can do some really cool stuff with triggers.
I’m considering buying this or the Alesis. Can this unit be used like I drum kit? I specifically need to know if you can connect a hi hat pedal and play a hi hat sound like a hi hat... open, half open, and closed. Thank you.
Do you use the wave manager software that comes with the SPD-SX? Would love to see a video on utilizing the software. I just received my SPD-SX and have watched all your videos trying to get a good understanding for incorporating it into our band's sound. Helps make sure I have everything on a flash drive incase I need to make last minute edits or restore from a back up. People really like the software SPD-SX Editor though. Check that software out. People say it is 100x's better than the software Roland has stock for the unit.
Cool video. Does this machine come pre-loaded with sounds? If so, how many kits? Also, can you record samples live? In other words, can you plug in a mic and record a sound live and use it as a sample? Thanks!
I’m planning on adding sample pads around my kit to use during bridges / intros etc. would you think the SPD-SX would be a helpful tool to run all the pads through? And how many pads could I connect to it?
Hey Tim Thanks, very helpful! i have a question tho, can i aslo use the spd sx as a monitor system? thinking of plugging the monitor line that comes from the mixer to the audio in where i can hear almost everything, the instruments together with the vocals. would be okay? i mean, would it not damage the spd sx? thank you!
I wouldn't try that. You MIGHT be able to get that to work. But I would honestly just carry a separate little mixer (behrenger makes good/cheap mixers) that have 3 or 4 inputs. That will give you a lot more flexibility on building a mix for yourself and sending stuff to FOH.
Spd 30 it is then. I kinda figured this at this point but thank you for the clarification. Now if the spd sx could tune or the spd 30 could sample it would be the complete product. I wonder if any future octapad will have sampling ability. Great video. Thank you brother.
I have a question, maybe somebody can help. You know how you usually connect your pair of headphones to your laptop and then just jam along to songs on your accustic kit. How do you do that along with the spdsx? Hope somebody can help. :)
Since you need to hear the SPD-SX and your laptop in your headphones at the same time, I would say that getting a tiny little mixer (Behringer Xenyx 502 is $40 new). That will allow you to hear both in your headphones at the same time. And having a little "problem solver" mixer like that is never a bad thing.
That is honestly a better problem than them being too quiet. If they are too loud I would just turn them down on the SPD unit. Every venue/room you play in might need a slightly different volume adjustment as rooms that have a lot of bass build up will need less gain from your low end samples and rooms that are very harsh will probably require you to drop the volume of your high end snaps/claps/etc.
hahaha. Honestly it is an amazing instrument. When played correctly and with the right knowledge. Which is NOT what most people in Nashville are doing when they play cajon. haha.
Most drummers can’t play Cajon. They can botch it up and kinda sound like something. But cajon is for percussionist. You’re not a cajon player because you played a pop pattern on it. Like a kit, you need technique and skills to play a cajon.
Absolutely agree! Cajon is an amazing instrument when played by someone who is using proper technique and playing a cajon for cajon's sake, not someone who is trying to make a cajon sound like a drum set. I should have made that more clear. You are totally right.
Hi, Tim. I really liked watching this movie because I found the sound I wanted, but I didn't get it in the end. If you want, can you send it to me??? 👍🏻3:25
We had an "acoustic band" here, at an acoustic little festival, small stage, small audience, and one guy asked me where he could plug in his amp. Result: The band had no guitar player for that gig xD Idiots can play games with themselves, not me. If your "acoustic" guitar needs an amp, think about it... and ask your parents, if the f.. under the influence lol
Cool video except all the animosity towards the cajon! I get the opposite experience. Everyone thinks my cajon sounds like a drum set! Nuances make or break the music.
Agreed! I have ZERO nuance on a Cajon (as do most drummers I see in Nashville playing them) so I decided to leverage an "instrument" I already had instead of go that route. But fully agree that when played with nuance and skill - Cajons can sound amazing. I'm just NOT that player haha.
@@TimBuell that's a shame (not about you but your statement about Nashville drummers in general). You'd think across the board more would use it but to each their own I guess. One DOES NOT have to play a Cajon but they are extremely versatile instruments for use in the modern medium. I appreciate your response. All the best.

Tim Buell nice! Thank you so much broh. 🙏🙏🙏
We’re can I get a cheap used one someone help me out look for my first real pad have the Alesus sample pad 4
Playing the Cajón is for real men 💪🏽
hahaha. Honestly it is an amazing instrument. When played correctly and with the right knowledge. Which is NOT what most people in Nashville are doing when they play cajon. haha.
Can i import 24bit wave files?
I don't believe so, but you can convert them to 16 bit pretty easily (I have another video on my channel about that somewhere)
Thanks brother
Good info Bro!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you!
thank you
Most drummers can’t play Cajon.
Thank you.
Hey this was helpful
Glad to hear it!
Hi, Tim. I really liked watching this movie because I found the sound I wanted, but I didn't get it in the end. If you want, can you send it to me??? 👍🏻3:25
I get a lot of my samples from "I Want That Sound" - check them out!
Thank you for your answer. By the way, where was the sound that came out at 3:25? Is it in 500 samples?
And yes. Lesson on the SPD-SX
Why are you wearing monitors? Click track?
Hey! Good question. It is so I can hear the sounds coming from the SPD-SX.
@@TimBuell I'm thinking of using one for a practice kit, instead of a drum monitor. ie 2 kicks, 1 snare. Think it would be good for that?
Dude. Cajons. The struggle is real. 😂
"What is up people"
I know. My wife mocks me for it too. I've considered changing the greeting on MANY occasions.
