Your cymbal question - it kills the sample.
As a drummer who plays in bands that use clicks and backtrack and am the primary tech guy in the band - this is way easier for me to control vs a laptop. In my case, the SPDSX is cheaper than buying a MacBook to run my live show - and I get more use out of it than a MacBook (I’m a pc guy but I’d never run a windows machine live) so for me it’s more purpose built.
It’s also a drum module so - I can load any samples I want and trigger my kick or add trap hats etc into my songs while still using it to run my backing tracks, clicks, and queues.
Now - if my guitar player wants to midi map the show with his kemper and run that off a laptop, sure this loses value quickly - but I think this is geared mainly towards guys who want reliable hardware that isn’t a laptop. Pros and cons - obviously you can do way more off a laptop including lights and other stuff.
The extra hardware outputs are cool as others have said not only for FOH but also when you run closed loop IEMS.

The extra outputs definitely come in handy if you are triggering via the spdsx. Really helps front of house to have a triggered snare or kick in its own channel.

Using both Ableton and The SPD for 21 years, I LOVE the new Pro. Got it last week and only have scratched maybe 5% of what it can do.

As a drummer I have never been a fan of using any pad device for both a controller and a sound source. So even though I am Ableton fan to say the least. When it comes to a unit likes this I am loading sounds and automating the kits and possibly other features. Especially if I am doing playback as well…. I am thinking about playback and just know the sounds will be there. I want it to function like a drum and not be dependent on my playback rig.
As fare as the outputs go I I could see using Kick, Snare, Claps & Snaps, Cymbals, Perc, loops, and maybe an FX. If you have the channels. But for most churches 2 would get the job done.
Adding back in the HH controller is huge to use as a standalone unit. Rather than forcing you to the Octopad.
The velocity sensitivity and the revamped pads are huge improvements as well again aimed the act of drumming. And higher crosstalk build in!
The LED display screen is something we have been begging for for a long time and back lit knobs and buttons are smart as well. I am big fane of other trigger outputs as well to place things more ergonomically.
I think most drummers using a hybrid kit won’t be using a lot of those cool new features, but I think if you are using it as electronic drummer than those would be some creative tools at your disposal.

I love using full drum modules like the TD-50 or the glorious TM-6 pro. The SPD is just hard to put comfortably around the kit. The spd for smaller acoustic shows is where it shines tbh. Easier to bring around and quick. But for sure a full drum module for hybrid kit performance!

Will, I used the old SPD and now have had the new one for a week. I’d happily answer questions you have if you’d like. This has changed the game now that it can be played as a portable kit as a standalone and with the new layering and sequencer I can now use this without a computer, whereas I needed Ableton to do a lot of functions with the old SX. So this means I’m using the PRO with all these features that you are asking whether drummers would use live.
Yes, samples/loops do continue when you change kits 😉
They’ve done a lot to fit a lot of DAW features in a standalone piece of hardware.
Extra triggers and direct routing, and the fact you can use it as an audio interface with these outputs does mean it can work well with Ableton.
    Hope this is helpful.
Happy to answer any more questions if more comments come in 😊
    Cheers,
    Matt

Hey Matt, one question, Does the SPD-SX pro have the option where you can "Tempo Match" a loop to the kit, so that when I change the tempo of the kit, all the loops in that kit change tempo as well? in the old SPD-SX you could go into "Kit Menu" and click on "QUICK" and it would give you an option to "Tempo Match" I can't seem to find this option in the new SPD-SX PRO.
      Thanks,
      Johni

@@fromstudiotostage I'm also wondering about tempo. I have it, and I'm menu diving trying to figure out how to change the sample tempo. I didn't see how to do it in the manual yet either.

The SPDSX Pro has an audio interface built in... You can send 8 channels from the unit to your computer and the computer can send 12 channels back to the SPDSX Pro.

Not a drummer but I've seen plenty of drummers run the spd-sx and ol' spd-s with tracks loaded on. Clearly not as flexible as Ableton but works great for lesser known pop acts with linear tracks. From what I can tell they're more stable than one laptop running Ableton so I can see the financial appeal.
I love all of your Ableton content but I'm also really interested in seeing more content on "hardware" playback devices like this. Things like the Cymatic Audio uTrack24 really suit particular playback use cases and I lie awake and wonder whether they'd be a better way to go for certain acts I know/work for.
FYI not a lot of content out there on the uTrack24... hint hint

Ah gutted! I just found out Cymatic went out of business a few months ago. Keen on any other gear reviews/reactions though!

I use the SPDSX in both camps. I have found that for ease of setup when you are not in a House of Worship situation is perimount. I use tracks and click from the pad in section to move between sections. And the outputs allow for any pad to be sent to any output similar to the iconnectivity systems. Without the extra gear. I also use it with Ableton for situations when the artist hires me and they run Ableton. I use it as the controller

As a drummer who uses backing tracks through Ableton, The SPD-SX Pro, for me, would be better and having more storage for samples, using the external triggers for extra pads around the kit for ergonomics sake. I do like the lights around the pads as well especially for dark stages. The screen and functionality looks way better too. I've used the SPD-SX before and it is great. I do however like this better.

About about the sensitivity and threshold for activate the triggers? Is this reactive compared to other drum pads?

  • @Danny-du8gc
    @Danny-du8gc Год назад

It can do a lot of cool new things and the extra trigger capabilities and audio outputs are great. However, it can’t be a redundant setup for tracks like Ableton with the iConnectivity PA12 can. I’ll still buy one and use it as a $1200 midi controller for triggering sounds via Ableton, while running tracks in Ableton as well 😂

One more addition to this video. Let's say you have a ride cymbal on a pad... and you play pp mp p mp mf f ff. (Quiet to loud) you will get 8 different ride sounds.... that's impressive.

What do you mean, when using as a midi controller to a vst? There is only max 2 samples on each pad

  • @manishhingoo7581
    @manishhingoo7581 11 месяцев назад

It has everything but no Tempo or BPM SYNCH which is important for drummer like me who usually plays Bollywood Gigs and tempo increase in the last
Please let me know if you have any way out of this>>> I have looked everywhere but not winning situation. So it does not have all features which spds-x has ???? It is wrong information.
I am kind of disappointment after spending high price for this toy.
