Hi Rob, great pick ups for the collection. I was particularly taken with the David Sylvian solo album Brilliant Trees. I like the way you described it, that will go onto my ever expanding wantlist! Mike
The Association were all over the radio here in the States for many years with their four big songs: “Along Comes Mary,” “Cherish,” “Windy,” and “Never My Love.” I got to see the Watersons in concert once, at a folk club in Berkeley called the Freight and Salvage. The place was jammed full; we were standing at the very back!
I think I need to check out the early Watersons' career, I've been ( unfairly) led to believe that none of it shapes up to say Bright Phoebus..then I thought, that was in a group ensemble and not a capella as they once were, so a very different vibe. Nice that you got to see the original family group live Michael. 👍
Good stuff Rob. Those original album boxsets are great value. I have quite a few of them. It took me a while to discover The Watersons. I came to them via Martin Carthy. I always like seeing your latest Brazilian finds. Cheers...Mike
Thanks Mike The Brazilian music isn't exactly seasonal at the moment, but always puts some sunshine in my life when I find them!. The CD Album series are utter bargains. Can't wait for the reissue ( again) of Bright Phoebus.
Hey Rob! Years ago I put Never My Love by The Association on a compilation tape for a mate, he later used the tune at his wedding when he and his new wife walked down the aisle. I used to walk past the pub in Hull where The Watersons got their start on my way to work every day. It really doesn't surprise me that The Watersons came out of Hull, it's an incredibly creative place despite the bad rep it gets. Once you spend some time there you begin to see how special the place is. Hed
Hi Hedley Thanks again for the Tommy Flanders reccomendation...Never My Love is fabulous..Astrud Gilberto does a lovely version too. I can imagine that song going down a storm at a wedding. Hull certainly does produce some great musicians..Katie Spencer is one of those carrying the torch.
Hi Rob. I was lucky enough to find a clean second-hand copy of 'Birthday' many years ago when I was first getting into the Association. Lovely music ... There is a fascinating black and white fly-on-the-wall documentary about the Watersons on RUclips; not brilliant picture quality, but watchable. It's well worth checking out ... That Maria Bethania original pressing is a real rarity. Wow. That Arthur Verocai album is stunning too, with a quality booklet.
Thanks Carl I love Birthday, its my favourite album by the Association..Mamas and Papas esque with a touch of psychedelia..wonderful. Nice one for finding an OG vinyl copy..I gave up hence purchasing the CDs. Couldn't resist the deluxe Arthur Verocai, it's a great package. Didn't know the Maria Bethania album was rare, it wasn't expensive. Thanks for Watching.
Hi Rob - I love those 5 CD album series boxes. Nice Waterson related finds. I'm thinking of getting the recent reissue of Martin Carthy's debut which is a great album. Lavish Arthur Verocai release but I'll stick with my plain black copy without the goodies I think. Nice Sandie Shaw album with some fun interpretations. Cheers Dale
Thanks Dale. The 50th Verocai release was very indulgent as I already had the regular issue..but then the collector kicks in..you know how it goes sometimes!. I saw Martin Carthy at The Moseley Golk Festival about 18 months ago, he still performs very well.
Hi Rob, I like the Association, but really only the hits. They had incredible singles that I grew up with when I was quite young. Tons of memories but I just don’t need their albums. Now I, going to download their hits into my phone!
Going to have to check out those two from members of the Waterson family. I love those early Watersons albums. Got the Mike Waterson solo album from 1977 which is worth checking out. I'm surprised that given my love of folk music I only got to see Martin Carthy live the once, and that was as part of Steeleye during his second brief spell with the band. I did get to see daughter Eliza live in the late 90s and she was excellent that night. A truly talented multi-generational family.
I'm kind of obsessed with the Watersons at the moment..basically after experiencing the wonder that is Bright Phoebus..pleasantly surprised to find some excellent later releases though. There's a genuine earthiness and honesty about their music that is just wonderful..I'm ashamed that it's taken me so long to discover them. Would love to have seen Lal and Oliver Knight back in the day.
I like The Association too. I was lucky to find an original of their album Renaissance a couple of years ago. I bet their records are really easy to find in the states! I like the look of that Sandie Shaw album. I remember my grandma being non-plussed by her because she wore no shoes! Take care, John
Hi John Yes for sure Association records will be dirt cheap in the US..thrift store fodder no doubt!.. you did well to pick up Renaissance, I've only ever seen the greatest Hits comp.
Nice eclectic selection as always Rob. I've heard a lot about that Arthur Verocai album, I'll have to stream it. I must admit I've given up buying those 5CD sets now that I finally have Spotify! I think I've only heard the odd track by The Association. I just saw Dale show that Sylvian record and was conversing with him about it. I have it on CD and vinyl but haven't given it enough attention as yet. In fact I need to plunge into my Japan vinyl collection as well as I only have a cursory knowledge of their stuff. Cheers, James
Hi James The Arthur Verocai is musically so interesting and transcendent..one of the best Brazilian albums I've heard for sure. I have to admit, as good as Brilliant Trees is, it's still not up there with the best of Japan, particularly Tin Drum. All the best.
Hey, I haven't bought anything in five years and I'm still here making videos. Then again, I bet people wish I wasn't making videos. The Association is one of those bands that those who know, know how good they are. They fly under the radar (except in the VC) and are solid. I definitely hear the Axlerod on the Verocai album.
Hey Kris Great to hear from you! Don't worry about not buying vinyl, I've really pulled the reigns in this year..( until the next record Fair!!)..Saw you showing Dire Straits..Love Over Gold, love that record, saw them live in 1985 and Knophfler teased us with the intro to Telegraph Road..then the soab didn't play it..aagh!. Yes, Association are great, never see their albums here in the UK, apart from Greatest Hits and I wanted the deeper cuts, so the CD set was a no brainer..Hope all is swell in your world. Thanks for checking in.

Nice finds Rob. I was looking at grabbing a copy of Sylvian’s debut last week. Solid album.
Cheers Jeff
'tis a gret album!.

@@robison5396 I'm assuming it's rare on the basis I've never seen it. A great find.
The Sylvian record is really good.
Hi Rob, some nice finds there. Brilliant Trees is a great record. Hope you are keeping well. Steve
Cheers Steve
Yes, all good mate.
Hope you are too.

Sandy Shaw doing Led Zeppelin is surprisingly good. Cheers Rob, Chris (Vinyl Orchard)
Cheers Chris, she does cover songs well.
