Withers, Physical Graffiti, Bush and VU! 👍🏽👍🏽 Couldn’t agree more!
Respects and condolences for your loss, Rob. Spirit is great! Love that Randy California! I just picked up that Strawbs, great record. I’m all in on all things Peter Gabriel! KPM is a great production library label. The 70s titles are amazing, Brian Bennett and Alan Hawkshaw are iconic! Great finds, Rob! Cheers! Steve
Thanks Steve! Eileen was a wonderful lady..life is fragile, we have to live for today. Strawbs are wonderfully creative..Dave Cousins is underrated as a songwriter. Hope you're keeping well..I saw those butcher covers..Great find!. All the best. Rob.
Some very thoughtful choices, Rob. You’re right Nick Drake’s music could be joyful, in a wistful way. Gordon Lightfoot’s If You Could Read My Mind is a great song. I’m ashamed to say I don’t know any of his other songs. I love Cemetery Gates and I reckon Morrissey can be hilarious at times.
@@baggyhi-fi8628 Thanks John. Yes, you're right about Morrissey, there's a lot of irony in his lyrics that I think people miss.
The Sad Bastard Tag is probably next on my list. I didn't even realize that some feel that Soul Mining is sad. Solid choices all around, and it's very cool to see Lightfoot. That's a sad yet wonderful song. Any Smiths song will do, it seems 🙂 The most exciting thing is the prospect of Dale's reply.
@@EmbryonicRobot Thanks Brian..yes, I think this tag will sit very comfortably with Dale and he'll produce a very entertaining response.
Rob, I just knew you had to do this tag. You got a lot of great sad bastard music lol. I keep thinking about doing this but I get too depressed lol. Nick Drake, I love his music, does that make me a lover of Sad Bastard Music Rob?
Not at all Steve, I don't find Nick Drake at all sad ( or not to the degree some would say anyway)..nothing wrong with being a sad bastard..go for it!!
Great response Rob. I think this one would be a difficult one for me to do. There's one question that I wouldn't be able to answer and that is my favourite Smiths track - unless the run off at the end of one of their albums counts 🤣! Never could stand them... sorry. And talking of not liking somebody, I don't know why but I've never taken to Nick Drake! Surprising I know given my love of that whole British folk, singer-songwriter scene of that period. There's just something about him that has never appealed - every few years I try again but with no success so far. I do own a best of LP though. Absolutely adore Nilsson's version of Without You and personally never get tired of listening to it. If I was to do this I'd have to include Peter Green's Man of the World - one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. And as for best lyric it probably has to be from Peter Hammill's Betrayed from one of the greatest break-up albums ever 'Over'... "Friends - they're all harbouring knives To embed in your back out of revenge, or spite Or indifference, or lack of other things to do - When in the end just who's going to be a friend for you When they kick you in the guts just as your hand holds out the pearl? It seems that there is nothing left but Hatred and lust in the world" ...and with that happy thought I'll say au-revoir 😁!
@@soundsfromthewestcoast9939 What..no like Nick Drake???!!!..I guess there are always one or two out there ( only joking) . I can understand you not liking The Smiths..they seem very far removed from what you would normally show on your channel. Those Peter Hammill lyrics are something else..there was a love and appreciation I think for many 60s and 70s artists for romantic poets like Keats ( particularly Roy Harper), I love Without You, but it would be nice if just once in a while you'd hear the Badfinger original played. Ah Man of the World..amazing song, so poignant and sad..a great contender for an all time sad bastard list!. Thanks for watching Pete.
Hey Rob. I agree, Nick Drake does bring some joy into his discography as well. Something I think people overlook. The The is a perfect answer for that prompt. I think the 1980s in general has served well for that. A lot of sad dance parties in the 1980s. Lol "Cemetery Gates" is an incredible song. The Queen Is Dead is still my favorite proper album by The Smiths. Even if I reach for Louder Than Bombs more. I'll have to listen to Alan Price's version of "Simon Smith..." Randy Newman's recording is very, well, Randy Newman-esque. I love Sail Away. Dale doing this tag should be a real treat. Lol. Thanks for obliging James and myself with this great response. Cheers!
@@TheDigitalGramophone Thanks John..I was filled with trepidation when James tagged me, but I soon got into it once I started digging through the collection and giving it some thought. Excellent tag theme..I hope you and yours have a great Xmas 👍.
The German one looked very interesting with nice cover. VCLT has been forgotten about! I must sort this as am having a bit of a clearout. Good Hedley passed onto you. Him and John are a dynamic and prolific duo, I cannot keep up with them, I've remained a once a monther.
Thanks Martin Sybille Baier is amazing..lovely acoustic picking, beautiful understated vocals and fatalistic lyrics..what's not to love..🙂🙏
I was enjoying this until the end! This is going to finish me off I think as I'm not a words person...I will respond but don't hold your breath Rob as I need to do some digging...cheers Dale
Sorry Dale!..please don't feel pressured..I just thought as you like music with a " melancholic " feel that this might be up your street.
@ thanks for considering me is what I should have said…You are right I have plenty of source material. Actually not as bad as I thought so might get it done sooner than I expected…
@@gatefold33 Just pick 12 different songs from The Wall.

Great response Rob, so many good picks here. I had both Soul Mining and Lexicon of Love on my initial list but in the end couldn't quite get them in. The first version of 'Dancing Bear' I ever heard was on the Muppet Show Album, sung by Scooter I do believe! It was decades later that I came across the original after getting into Randy. I have the new biography of him waiting to open as an Xmas gift from my mother-in-law this Crimbo - she always picks great presents for me. 🤣
Thanks James This was harder to do than I first thought!. Ha ha, The Muppets!..my dad absolutely loved them and I used to love watching it with him because he'd crease up whenever the old blokes who sat in the gods came on. I need to get into editing these videos, because I realised afterwards there was so many more things I wanted to say about the songs and lyrics..ho hum..thanks for watching.🙂🙏
Hi Rob, I’ve just found your channel. I know u comment on mine. The A-austr is an odd album for sure. I showed it on one of my early videos. It doesn’t sound like it was recorded in 66 to me. I’d guess 68-9. I shall now go through some of your other videos.
Wow, the love train has been chugging to your door. Very nice Rob, time to make more space.
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Cheers Steve It definitely seems to be becoming a regular stop!. Indeed..space is at a premium now in my attic!!
Nice VCLT - I like quintessence too - went to the Moseley Record Fair on the 1/12 - was great - good prices for all budgets - and got a nice Sunday dinner afterwards too👍
Nice one!..I wanted to go to the fair but had a prior commitment..glad you picked up some stuff. All the best.
Hey Rob, what a lovely gift! Like you, I haven’t listened to Sleepwalkers. In fact, I don’t think I’ve heard anything after Everybody’s im Showbiz. Youngbloods & Quintessence albums look interesting. I’ve never heard of the 18th Day of May or Richard Olsen, but sounds like something I’d like. Cheers, Jack
@@TheVinylVoyage-ud3uf Thanks Jack..The Quintessence is great, some lovely prog there. The Sleepwalkers album will be a slower burn methinks..Richard Olsen is just fabulous..Will definitely be having a retrospective trawl through his back catalogue. All the best Rob.
I must dig out Basket of Light for a re-listen since you’ve mentioned it here, Rob. Band on the Run is such a strong album, I think Venus and Mars is good too but I think fizzles out by Side Two. First time I ever heard Zep’s In the Light I was blown away. Certainly their mystical side coming to the fore.
Basket of Light is a joy, and a regular Sunday morning record for me. I adore ' Love in Song' from Venus and Mars...McCartney being transcendent. Yes, In The Light is wonderful and was for a while my favourite song on Physical Grafitti. Thanks John.
I had an idea (hope) that you would like the Richard Olson LP Rob from stuff you've shown in the past (which were to be honest the one or two items I wasn't that keen on 😁). He was also in a band called The Hanging Stars who I have yet to hear. My favourite music to come out of the Eighteenth Day of May are the albums by The Left Outsides - atmospheric psychy folk. They are (or were, the last album was in 2019) a duo of Alison Cotton and Mark Nicholas, both of 18th Day. Alison has also done some excellent solo work. I think you made fair assessments of the other albums. The Kinks is an enjoyable album but like you said probably not all that memorable at first. I was afraid the albums might be a bit crackly, but you see I have a device on my system which removes the pops and clicks (and does an excellent job of it) - it means I can buy cheaper albums and still get a good sound out of them. But hopefully they'll do you until you find better copies. All the very best... Pete
Thanks so much for these records Pete, I had a lot of enjoyment playing them. As you heard me say here, not all struck a massive chord on a first listen, but a couple, particularly the Richard Olson and Quintessence I really enjoyed..Pierre Bensusan is an artist I'm looking forward to getting to know better regarding his output, very enjoyable. You certainly have a keen nose for knowing peoples' tastes and you hit the nail here several times. I will be reciprocating the gesture soon my friend. All the very best Rob.
@robison5396 I really wasn't looking for anything in return Rob, but I'm not one to turn down free music. Thank you.
Hey Rob, such nice gifts from Pete. Such a nice knowledgeable guy. That Kinks record might be a grower. They became a different band when they signed with Geffin. David Geffin told them in no uncertain terms that he wouldn’t accept material like that on Schoolboys. They actually got a new lease on life for awhile before it all turned to shit between Ray and Dave. Cheers.
@@vinylmartini3377 Ray treated Dave appallingly by all accounts..Dave was the extrovert and popular with the girls, Ray always struggled with that..bit of a jealousy thing...re: ." Two Sisters"..Something Else ( 1967)
Rob, can you believe I even had a few of this albums ! Love the Bill Withers album and Zeppelin has a lot of perfect side to me. Well done
Cheers Steve Glad that you found some familiar music!.. All the best Rob.
Great response Rob. I still don't have anything by Bill Withers on vinyl (not through want of trying). Never heard that Delia Derbyshire record, sounds intriguing! I had a copy of that Pentangle record in my hands in Wrexham the other week but it was a little bit pricey unfortunately. Haven't heard the new The The yet, may pick up the CD. I thought of showing Band on the Run for side 2 as well but for some reason it fell off the list - maybe a little played out for me, but still a huge favourite obviously. Nice choice with the side 1 of Loaded - now I think of it, side one of the third eponymous Velvets album would be a strong contender for me also. Have a great weekend.
@@jamesgriffithsmusic Thanks James Yes!..side one of Velvets self titled would be an excellent choice..Candy Says..Some kinda Love, Pale Blue Eyes..their most acoustic and mellow record..beautiful! I see Basket of Light quite a bit at fairs up this way, I'll pick you up a copy next time I see it. Definitely reccomend the White Noise album..the first side is like an alternative 60s pop charts from another dimension..I love it!
Interesting selection Rob. Definitely agree with the Wings and Pentangle ones. Can't believe you made us wait 20 minutes until you showed Roy 😂. If I did this it would probably all feature prog albums with only 1 or 2 tracks per side - in fact Yes would provide 8 of the sides from 3 albums. There would have to be a 3 or 4 track minimum in the rules. I'd probably feature either side of Liege and Lief, ditto Neil Young's Everyone Knows..., and the medley side of Abbey Road. Not keeping so warm here - bl**dy boiler packed in! All the best...Pete
Aww Pete..you could just go on forever with this thread..which is why I picked a handful of albums I'd had in rotation recently...just playing some of your VCLT at the moment..interesting...
Hi Rob - A strong start with Still Bill. A great album that I only brought into the collection a year or so ago. I was going to purge White Noise recently but gave it another spin and it's a keeper...If I'd have done a 'proper' version of this thread I think side 2 of Hounds of Love would have featured. Nice choices, cheers Dale
@@gatefold33 Thanks Dale Side 2 of Hounds of Love never seems to get talked about that much, so I definitely thought it was worth a mention..I just wish I could like Running Up That Hill..
Can't knock your choices. You seemed to have picked ones you would play whilst many buy to complete sets and never listen to. As I write this I am listening to Hawkwind anthology 67-82 2 cd so hurry on sundown.
I'm not a vinyl trophy collector, and never have been. everything I buy I play..no keeping in' the shrink' ..Hawkwind are almost always a compelling listen. ' Hurry On Sundown' is in my top few Hawkwind songs for sure. Thanks for watching and commenting.
RIP Eileen. - hopefully try and get to the December Moseley fair with a couple of other VC’ers Rob ! Shall say hi if I spot you ! Nice Spirit album find - I like getting collection fillers and completing band discographies- and can’t go wrong with 70’s Hawkwind can you ? Stay well 👍🫡🇬🇧
@@gavaxemanspins Cheers Gav! Yes, that would be great to see you there.
I did just pick up up two of the early Gabriel albums. The only one I’m missing is the one you showed
Some people were telling me to try some Strawbs music, I see them in the bins periodically. I did know that Lennon album! Otherwise I knew some of the names but I have never seen most of those albums Rob. I was wondering about you the other day since it had been awhile since I have watched one of your videos.
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Hey Steve, as you've been dipping into prog recently, you might enjoy The Strawbs, although possibly less so with their folkier moments.
Hi Rob, I went to a fair last weekend and there was stacks of library kpm style albums which I'd not know where to start. It being London hipsters quite alot overpriced. I used to have some Steve Hillage System 7 stuff but culled it. Bit of a mistake really. Sorry about the loss is Moseley village then a particular vibe in Brum? Not sure I've heard of it outside maybe Jasper Carrot mentioning.
@@Thevinylscavenger Hi Martin Yes, Moseley is a cool suburb of Birmingham, it's very chilled with lots of cafes and pubs..my brother lives just down the road in Kings Heath but spends all his free time hanging out in the village.
Love that Spirit Lp especially Got A Line and Aren’t you glad. I always find Hawkwind consistently good. I saw Judie Tsuke in about 79/80. Lovely voice. A fair few faceless songs though. Love Hillage. Seen him live too. Om Riff is magnificent and is a gong song revisited. Palm trees is my favourite Hillage song. Gorgeous guitar. Got a couple of Strawbs Los. Not played them for years. Nice haul Rob. Cheers, Chris
@@TheVinylOrchard Hi Chris, great you got to see Judie in those early days, bet she was a great live act..although a song like ' For You' would be tricky to perform without many backing singers?. I've seen Hawkwind twice and they were excellent on both occasions. Thanks for stopping by.
Hey Rob, sorry to hear about the passing of your friend. A nice idea to dedicate the record fair to her. Nice Spirit album. I don’t think I’ve heard that one before. Always good to get a nice copy of Imagine… a brilliant album. Not heard that Strawbs album, bit always like their music. Happy listening, Jack
@@TheVinylVoyage-ud3uf Thanks Jack The Spirit album is a great listen..grab yourself a copy, you definitely won't regret it. Really enjoying The Strawbs album, although Grave New World is still my favourite. Thanks for watching.
Evening Rob (among the fireworks!) I think Spirit were unique in sound. Some great tunes on their early records. That Hawkwind album, which I also picked up recently, has some good individual tracks but I agree not up there with Quark Strangeness and Charm or PXR5. I wish Robert Calvert was still with us and making music... Don’t see many folk in the VC showing or speaking about The Strawbs. Definitely Prog by the time of Hero and Heroine. Bursting at the Seams is another good one from that mid 70s period. Take care, John.
@@baggyhi-fi8628 Hi John Yes, The Strawbs are strangely absent from the VC..I guess they're neither Prog nor Folk in the true sense, so perhaps opinions are divided?. Live those early Spirit albums. Robert Calvert was on another level as a performer, I would love to have seen him live. All the best.
Hi Rob Sorry to hear about your friend passing. Interesting haul, I was going to ask if it was Guy Fawkes Night. Take care, be well.
@@MortenAastad Thanks Morten..yes, it was some night of fireworks 🎆
Thanks Pete Yes, it was a nice gesture of the organisers to make that dedication. Green is a terrific Hillage album, even better to get it for £2.50!. In fact that 4 for a tenner deal was great, really chuffed there. Underrated is spot on with regard to Planet Waves, a real forgotten gem from that mid 70s period of Dylans' ..it was good to be reacquainted. We appear to concur on Astounding Sounds. Thanks for watching Pete. Take care.
Hi Rob, first off condolences on the passing of your friend - very nice of the fair to be dedicated to her memory. Excellent pickups from the fair this month. Can't go wrong with early Spirit. I was pretty disappointed with Astounding Sounds when it first came out, but it has grown a lot on me over the years, though I've always loved Steppenwolf. Even so I still consider it to be the weakest of their 70s output. Never owned Green unfortunately - as you said not one you ever see out in the wild. Hero & Heroine is an excellent album - I'd recommend the next album 'Ghosts' too. Planet Waves is an album that is very rarely discussed, but is one that I think is very underrated and should be more critically acclaimed. Cheers... Pete
Hi Rob. It was really interesting to hear your thoughts on A-Austr's 'Musics From Holy Ground'. As you probably already know, it came out originally on the label Holy Ground, which was run by Mike Levon, and was based in Wakefield. Bill Nelson, who'd been playing in various Wakefield bands since around 1967, made his recording debut on the A-Austr album. I did write a longer version of this, but it disappeared when I pressed send. Very annoying!
Hi Carl Thanks for the info on A- Austr..I seem to be learning more about this wonderful record all the time!. I was told at the record Fair that Bill Nelson was involved, but I didn't appreciate it wS his first recording. Thanks for commenting, hope you're keeping well. 👍 🙏
Hey Rob, Oh Mercy is such a great album. It’d probably be my favourite Dylan album since Street Legal. Hadn’t heard of A to Austr before… sound really great. Just read that they took their name from the opening words from the first edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica (A to Austr). Another one to add to the want list. Cheers, Jack
Thanks Jack I didn't know that about the album title, that was interesting.
@@robison5396 I thought that was the bands name… what are they called?
@@TheVinylVoyage-ud3uf The album is called Music From Holyground, which I believe refers to the name of the original record label.
@@robison5396 cool. One to track down, but my list is getting longer and longer and…
Real nice gesture. I sang along the whole way ❤
@@Cl4rendon Thanks so much!. I'm both surprised and touched that people are still finding this video and commenting 4 years later . The talent was all theirs, but I was glad to offer up this tribute. For my troubles, the RUclips algorithm gave me a copyright strike if you can belive that...🙄
Nice work Rob. I don't think I've ever listened to Jacques Brel, though he was a big early influence on Chris Difford. I still listen to Oh Mercy quite a bit, mainly on cd. It was the first Dylan I ever heard. Psych in the Valleys Steve was kind enough to send me the record a few years ago.
Thanks James, I have Jacques Brels' 1977 album ' Brel' which is an interesting listen..dark and brooding as is his aesthetic.
Oh Mercy was my first Dylan album and is still my favorite. Lanois was everywhere during that time
Thanks Steve Yes, he and Brian Eno seemed to be everywhere, production wise at this time.
Hi Rob. I picked up the second Silly Sisters album on CD in a charity shop not so long ago. It's alright, not as good as their first. I've never listened to Oh Mercy. I don't know why that is? I like Dylan and I like Lanois. I've got a subscription to Tidal, so there's no excuse.
Cheers Hedley I need to listen to the second Silly Sisters album, even if it's not so good, I love the way their two voices blend.
Hi Rob! A-Austp is a great find! Brel is always worth a listen. I’ve yet to see that Dylan record in the wild. Great fresh content! Educational for me.
@@TheVinylRecordMission Hi Steve Yes, delighted with A- Austr, as I mentioned even reissues are scarce..finding records like these is what makes record digging such a joy. Surprised you've not come across Oh Mercy.. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂
I grew up in Moseley! Which pub was it? The Fighting Cocks? I had my 21st birthday party there in, erm, 1978! Bull's Head? I think that was the one on the "green"? Anyway, nice haul, Rob. That A to Austr find was amazing. I don't recall ever seeing anything truly rare at a record fair
@@andysalbums Cheers Andy The fair wasn't in a pub, it was a club on Church Road. Yes, delighted and surprised to find the A- Austr. Thanks for watching.
Glad something good came out of the rubbish I sent you Rob. Having liked the A to Austr album you now need to try the Astral Navigations album, it's basically the same set of musicians but with the addition of Bill Nelson. Astral Navigations is the name of the album, don't think a band name was credited - it was released by Holyground too (as was Nelson's first album too I think). Nice pickup of Oh Mercy - I love Lanois' production. And Silly Sisters is a classic too - need to get the follow up sometime. Cheers...Pete
Thanks again for the introduction Pete, I feel very fortunate to have found A-Austr so quickly..serendipity indeed!..Astral Navigations will be something I'll for sure be on the lookout for..anything with Bill Nelson associated with it has to be worth checking out. Thanks again, hope you're keeping well 😉 🙏
Nice you found a copy so quick after Pete SFTWC exposed you to it. The excitement of getting into a new band or album 👍 I'd say kitchens at parties contain food and actually less noisy music so good place to hang out 😅

nice but rare
Going to try and get to the Moseley fair in December- that Dylan album is superb - stay well 🫡
Great, perhaps see you there!..thanks for watching.
Dreamin' wild has a terrible cover like Elvis impersonators. The The The single i always really liked was dogs of lust.
It's definitely not the greatest sleeve, but it's not a bad listen.
Bloody Sabbath is my favourite from the band- transformative! Also a big Procol fan - I've only got a handful of their albums, but I do enjoy that one.
' Transformative' is a great word to describe SBS, they were progressing musically, but in a good way. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Sad Pig Dance, now that is an album title! Interesting cover I have not heard of Dave Evans. I love that first Blondie Album, that is one of y favorites. I have yet to set up my CD player or unbox my CDs. Guess I should do that one of these days. Always a pleasure to spend some time with you Rob
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Dave Evans is just wonderful and has a unique style you, you can watch him on RUclips performing on a BBC music show from the 70s called The Old Grey Whistle Test.Dave plays a piece called ' Stagefright' ( which is also included on this album). For someone like me that adores the acoustic guitar particularly when it's played in a slightly unconventional way, Dave is sublime. Cheers Steve.
