The Seiko "Submariner" - Vintage SKX033 | A Watch Worth Collecting

- On this episode we take a look at an unheralded vintage time piece from Seiko, the SKX033. In production for only 12 years, starting in 1996, this piece seems to fly under the radar amongst collectors. It definitely takes many design cues from the famous Rolex Submariner, but it does have some typical Seiko flare as well.

Thanks for watching!
Worn this daily since 2008, rebuilt once, have it in the pool, etc., plenty of times. Such a great watch that gets comments from watch guys all the time even though my bezel looks like it dates from WW1 and the crystal isn't much better!
Nice to see an 033 in action. I purchased an 031 earlier this year, and have grown to wear it more than any other watch in my embarrassingly large collection. Being that I don't let it get near water yet either (need to pressure test it too), I threw it on a brown waterproof leather strap and, thanks to its relative light weight and compact size, hardly notice it's on, even when working on my laptop. It's definitely a keeper. Tomorrow I'm going to check out an 023 (looks just like the 031, but is only 37mm in diameter), which I might add to the collection too. Thanks for your review. It's. nice to see a watch from this series featured on YT. Best
The SKX033 is arguably the most beautiful diver for the price Seiko has ever made. I love the Pepsi bezel and definitely prefer the crown at 3 over the crown at 4.
The price on this has gone up. Had mine for the past 10 years and take it swimming and jacuzzi. I have it serviced every 5 years. Great watch!
Seiko has made some of the best dials for the price.
Seiko also made a 38mm version of this. SKX023 is black, SKX025 is pepsi. There is also a white dial version with gilt hour markers and hands. It's pretty neat. Anyway, lovely old Seiko you have there. I've an SKX023 myself and I simply love it.
Cheers
Nice, I need to find the white dial variant
I just bought the all black version of this watch , the skx031j. Really love the dial and case styling. Hoping to get a newer style rubber strap and NH36 movement for it. Consider it a restomod
Pretty sharp looking vintage Seiko, great content mate. Cheers
Thanks Shawn, cheers!
Time has made a very beautifull work on the metal, beautifull look.
i got me one of those last december in the preowned market and it's been great. i wasn't looking to get a rolex submariner homage but true enough some peeps have assumed it was a rolex on my wrist more than once.
Rampart so do you regret buying it?
Ferien7 I’m in the market for one also
I reckon that brown leather strap takes the watch into another level of appearance!
I have one. Great looking watch, I get tons of compliments on it. Perfect size too!
I wish Seiko would take note, and make their Samurai in 40mm, it would be great.
Just Watch Me too my friend. I wish Seiko wasn’t so tone deaf regarding sizes in general- especially with the divers.
It's funny to me because they make so many divers for the Asian market and typically asian people have smaller wrists than Americans and Europeans, so I'm surprised by it.
Just bought a beat up one that has lots of character. It says “7S26-0050” on the back instead of 0040. Not sure what that’s about but looking forward to rocking it!
I own the SKX-023, great little diver!
031 and 033 are amazing.
Just found one in a container in very great condition but not working. I love the look so I'll get it fixed and add it to my collection of divers. Also found a seiko bell matic along with it.
I have one of these that I bought second hand but 'As new' back in 2011, I smacked it on a steel radiator and scratched the crystal straght across from 3 to 9, I put it away and it's still in great condition apart from that large scratch in the hardlex 😕
That was the watch I lost in a bar somewhere in Brazil.
Nice watch and review. I like this much better than the 007.
Thanks, me too!
There are some really tough skx out there but most just don't keep very good time. It's a keeper you got lucky. Cheers
I’ve always thought that the 007 dial isn’t very nice. This watch has a way better dial
Another outstanding video thanks man
Thanks Jarod!
It's a Yacht-Master, not a Submariner. If anything it's a "Standard Beat" movement, and before 4-Hz movements came into use it was called a "High Beat" movement.
This is a really beautiful watch!!
I have two of the Skx033j killer watch
Great video, this has a way nicer dial than the 007! Thanks!
I think I have one. A guy at church gave it to me, because there were issues with the movement. He had swapped out the bezel insert for a root beer one, but I'm still trying to find out exactly what it is.
Excellent review
Think the older Sekio subs are some of the coolest maybe not as refined as the new one's an I'm stating that loosely but think if I was more into Sekio it be vintage for sure .
Nice video. Thanks. 👍
Thanks Rick!
Actually the 7S26 beats at 21600 vph. And yes, it's the closest Seiko did to a Submarine homage - but I like the way they interpreted the look and made it their own. There are hundreds of 1:1 copies out there, Steinhart does it as well.
What is the outer diameter and the inner diameter of the bezel??
Trying to find replacement oyster bracelet. Hard to find on eBay no luck.
i have the same model 👍
Hi how’s it going, I’m looking at their exact watch. The seller is saying it’s a JAPAN model but it doesn’t say Japan anywhere on the watch? Do you know should it say Japan on the older models?
Not sure, sorry Tim.
That is very nice. Reminds me of the Seiko 5 Sea Urchin.
Yes, very similar!
surfitli better than sea urchin
The sea urchin was the follow up model of this model , just no screwdown crown on the urchin.
Sold my Urchin and bought these exact watch 033
