I learned this one when I was REALLY young. In general I love coin tricks because they're often the most physically accessible, so you can teach them to drunk people and kids without much effort, and they can do it for their friends later. More than once I've shown people a trick, then a pretty lady asked me about it, and I taught her how to do it on her friends in the corner--and coin tricks are far easier to pass on than anything else. And they'll be able to do it later without you, all they need is coins.

A lot of these sorts of geometric problems are easier to solve in reverse. Frequently the problems are constructed such that the last move is obvious when you get there, but the set up for the last move requires something tricky. In this case the tricky part if getting the "scooped out" shape. If you work in reverse, that shape is much more intuitive, which is the same as the last move in the forward solution being obvious.
The other part to working in reverse is that the rules invert as well. Instead of a constraint on where to put pieces, you have a constraint on which pieces you can choose. You cannot move a coin unless it is touching fewer than two other coins.q
This rule also gives you an easier way to gauge the efficacy of any single move, with some implied constraints. If you move a coin in such a way that it leaves an isolated coin, you know you can't move the isolated coin again without additional moves to bring it back into play. Not an efficient choice. You also want each move to leave as few single contact coins as possible (coins which are touching only one other coin), since such a move would reduce the number of next possible moves.
Take the circle, we can move any coin, and because the shape is symmetrical, all coins are equal. However, not each placement of the moved coin is equal. If we move it to one of the outside spots on the other side of the circle, we leave two single contact coins on the edges. Instead we should move it to one of the adjacent outside spots. And now we have our "scooped out" shape, shown at 5:09, or the mirror of this shape which is also valid.
From here, using our inverted rule and the implied constraints due to that rule, it is much easier to finish the triangle. Just remember the moves you made on the reverse puzzle, then deconstruct your triangle back into a circle to solve the challenge.

I found a different solution that takes a few more moves: You can slowly build the circle by having a smaller triangle made of 3 coins. You take 1 of the 3 coins/corners of the triangle, move it around on the other side, take the other one, etc, until the coins get in their proper position for the circle

    (Spoiler)
Alternate solution: (easier to remember, I think)
build the pyramid with a side (not point) facing you. Label them 1 at the tip; 2 and 3 as the second row; 4,5,6 as the third row.
1: move coin #2 to below coins 4 and 5.
2: move coin #3 to below coins 5 and 6. (you should have a "w" of coins, with coin 1 being all lonely.
3: move coin #5 to between coins 1 and 4.
4: slide coin #1 to touch coins 4 and 5, completing the circle.
Also worth noting that you never move the same coin twice.

  • @OL-yd8ee
    @OL-yd8ee 3 года назад

@scam nation. There appears to be an alternate solution for this, at least as the rules are described. There is a requirement that you /place/ next to two coins, but not that all coins touch at least two other coins after each move. To ensure your sequence is the only one, I think you need to add a "no isolated coins" requirement (all coins must touch at least one other after each move). Otherwise the following setup works.
there are 8 positions that matter, each of the initial coin positions is 1-6 in order.
    1
    2 3
    4 5 6
then the space below touching 4/5 and 5/6 are positions 7 and 8 that we will use.
    1
    2 3
    4 5 6
    7 8
2 to 7, 3 to 8, 5 to 2, 1 to 3 is a four move sequence that follows all the rules by utilizing the isolated 1 along with four to both hollow out the new center and establish the 5th part of the ring, then 1 finishes as in your example.

I actually solved it a different way!
Looking at the 'pyramid' (triangle): take the 2nd row, and put it under the 3rd rows (aka the long row). This takes 2 moves, and leaves us with a row of 1, an 'empty' row, a row of 3, and then a row of 2
Now we can take the middle one from the row of 3 and put it where 1 of the 2 we just moved was. Next, just put the top where the other was.
    That's it.

    Spoilers/solution follows:
    ----
So, the generic solution is to start with the pyramid inverted -- 3 Qs in the top row, 2 in the middle row, and 1 at the bottom (row).
Designate the top left Q as the "handle" of the yet to be made "scoop".
Now move (independently) the other 2 Qs from the top row to the right side of the bottom 2 rows, i.e., adding one Q to the right side of each of the bottom two rows to form the "scoop".
Once the "scoop" is formed, scoop out the Q in middle of the "scoop", and move it to the right side of the "handle".
Finally, move the "handle" Q to close the circle.
