Love the footage you choose as examples. In the Disney pantheon, Maleficent had the best look, the Evil Queen had the best voice, but Yzma absolutely had the best lines.
This was a good video! I have never thought of Poison Ivy as a bad guy (bad girl). She's always been my hero, or maybe anti-hero, but never a flat out villain. I loved the nuance and insight in this!
On another note: the topic makes me think that (simplifying) the villain is usually the one who challenges the rules and the hero is someone who just prevents the change, keeps the order. Like hero's purpose is not to make the world better but rather to prevent a change, keep the status quo. Does that make a good person, really? Who would want people to think that a good person is someone who sticks to how things are and is basically obedient... this topic can go really deep, when you think about how all those movies shape our perception of the world and of ourselves. Food for thought and a very tasty one! Thank you, Tawny!
Great job, Tawny! Semi-regular videos like this will help your channel grow crazy big. People are tired of modern mass-market storytelling because of the poor content produced by callow writers-those with no respect for old myths or classic stories. They want to “subvert expectations” without having the skill to do so. And, as you have voiced, the villain often receives the most attention and care, which makes them more interesting. Keep up the good work! You’ve earned a new subscriber!
I follow you on TikTok, that's why I'm here. There's a guy I follow their as well calling himself Thomas "The Villain" Bishop. To paraphrase his words, he's seen the people we call heros today, and decided he would be the villain in defiance. I think that's something people would relate to nowadays, when we see the kind of people being held up as heros & the blatant hypocrisy of it all, it's really tempting to be the villain. This was brilliant and well done, and I'd love more of this stuff in the future. Congratulations ❤️
So this is the first video I've seen of you and I have to say, you have some very good points. I'm aspiring to be a writer someday and you've suddenly made me question a lot of stuff. Which, I already wanted to try and avoid certain tropes but now I'm wondering about how to make my heroes more interesting... and the answer seems to be making them more defined, even at the risk that that might mean people can't imprint on them. I don't know, I'll have to think about it more.
Thank you! I for sure think there’s a lot to consider when it comes to how defined you want your character to be and believe there is something to be said about creating a character for a niche audience too. Very best of luck to you! 🖤
I find that if the villain's backstory is known, it adds so much more depth to the character and makes them relatable and even likeable. Take Davy Jones for example.
@@tawnyplatis7866 likewise! You’re very talented, and very entertaining! I’d love to collaborate some time, if that makes sense for the channel. Media tropes and analysis is my jam!
I think the key to building the key to a good hero and a key to a good villain, is giving the each other the piece that the other needs like Killmonger/T'Challa or Clarice Starling/Hannibal Lecter. These can help make compelling heroes who can keep up with a villain. Edit - Since you included several game villains in your presentation, another great example is Rafe Adler/Nathan Drake.
I love this long form format, & your exploration of the allure/relatability of villains in media. I found poison ivy captivating as a child, her motivations seemed v reasonable to me (& her outfit is cool lol)
I think Beauty and the Beast is an interesting example here. In most other stories, Gaston would actually be the hero, and he even sees himself that way. He becomes the villain when he refuses to let go of the idea of being the hero when the situation changes, consequently in other stories Belle and The Beast would play the roles of damsel and monster respectively. Beauty and the beast shuffles these roles. The monster (Beast) is actually the damsel, the hero (Gaston) is actually the monster, and the damsel (Belle) is actually the hero. The Tale as Old as Time really did get a lot of things right.
Thanks for sending me over here from TikTok. I think the best villains are ones in whom you can see yourself reflected, in some way. Hopefully a way you haven’t really explored or a view not considered. Then, while you consider, you find yourself looking through their eyes.
The evil queen is my mother lol 😆 😂 🤣 Have you seen the TV series once ? Some villains don't see themselves as a villain Lex Luthor sees superman as a alien invader and risk to the city doing and being into everything as a king pin of metropolis is just good business
*I don’t like any of it. I’ve never liked Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Hollywood, social populism, tv, movies. It’s all garbage.* *I like research, investigation, science, justice, sigh.* *howdver, tank girl is the best movie ever made.*
Do you remember that one time... when you clicked on a video thumbnail because there was a cute girl in a white shirt?... and you watched the whole video without seeing the white-shirt... I do. 😐 --- Clickbait... Platis 1... Me 0 .... well played.
As a gay man, i have now realized my magneto was right storyline. I saw myself with professor x, but id probably be on the brotherhood now. Also yes poison ivy is an icon and we should trust in her.
@@tawnyplatis7866 I will forever remember the moment she slid her sunglasses down in Batman and robin. Her look was so campy and amazing. Also ivy and Harley ♥️
Oh dear, Bill Cipher is mine. I've often said that if you drained away all goodness and morality and compassion from myself, you would wind up with something like Bill. He represents my dark side extremely well.

The line between good and bad is sometimes grey, well done!
You have a beautiful voice

Totally! I was so confused as a kid as to why she was a villain. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Shego 💚 🖤 “looking very very good while being very very bad” perfection.
Thank you!!

This was an excellent piece!
Should you ever be involved with one of my projects, I'll make sure there's a good villain role for you ;)
That would be a blast!
Super interesting. You made a lot of freat points and gave me a lot to think about
I love this! And would love more of these types of videos!
So maybe this is why I'm a sucker for the "imperfect superheroes" genre ex. The Boys, Invincible, Sky High
Your understanding and talents would be a really great match with a writer for a film 😊😊
Thank you so much!

I appreciate you watching!
