- Time to make these subwoofers truly ONE OF A KIND! Well... 12 of a kind! Today, we finish up the basic skeletons for the subs, which are now gloss white with matching backplates. Let's get the hard parts fully assembled while we prepare for the soft parts next... RECONES!!! Thanks for watching and subscribing :)

Step 1: Remove stuck-on debris
- the gap for the voice coil loves to collect small bits of debris and metal shavings. We'll need to carefully clean the inside to avoid any problems.
Step 2: Remove rust and recoat
- the backplates of each motor have also started to oxidize. We'll need to sand off all that, and scuff up the surface for new coating.
Step 3: Upgrading old hardware
- the motors were originally held on by 6 soft metal Philips heads. We'll upgrade to grade 8 hex heads, and replace the back bolts with black for good measure.
Step 4: Painting the back plates
- the extra touch of adding gloss white paint to the frames and backplates will help the subs POP out more on when making bass videos
Step 4: Reattach motor & basket
- each sub needs to be reassembled with threadlocker and glue, so we'll tighten everything down before adding new recones.
Now these woofers are EVEN MORE RARE!
Custom touches all over the place :)

I love how your so positive all the time, it's like you never want to miss anything in your life. Such a great person!
Livin his best! 💪
Can't wait to
We can't wait to hear it all the way from South Africa
Yeah I tried getting my speakers out of the box before and I ended up slicing the cone with the screwdriver
@@Scott67645 I had that problem so what I did I found my thinnest screwdriver I had and started prying from the outside slowly but surely and grabbing with my hand on edge and pulling and they came off
Making these 17 year old subwoofers truly one of a kind!!! What do you think about the results??? 👀
Today's Comment Challenge:
What's the MOST STUPID thing you have ever done while working on projects?? 🤦
I think we all know what my answer is 🤣
Ooh I love the feeling of continuing a protject
Blowing subs is the best part.
hey exo i think it would be awesome if you could name this build big bertha
Lmao I put a bbq together backwards lmao still up and running grilling up what ever we need grilled
I zip tied some super tweeters in a 5x7 slot in my current build I was so ashamed .... dumbest thing was my first attempt at a system an home audio 18 hooked to my rear deck in a Corolla trunk build
I accidentally over sprayed my moms new car when I was younger. It was like 15ft away too. A lesson in painting you'll never forget lol
Wipe shaving cream on the inside of your mask it will keep it from fogging up 👍
I do this at work with my safety glasses
Didnt know that! Thanks for the great idea!!!
Or just don't wear one?
@@franshaan7388 me either, I hate mask because I was a driver and I made delivery’s to plant’s and some areas required mask and I sweat easy so In the summer time in Texas it suck
@@franshaan7388 ik ook niet lol
Man if I lived close I’d lend you helping hand for those heavy lifting moments
@@nyccollin 🙄🙄
@@nyccollin if you ain't got anything nice to say, you should probably just shut the fuck up.
😂 just pause it @8:08 😂 I hope he’s ok 😂 that face he made is priceless 😆
@@nyccollin he made a video explaining why he struggles with lifting.. even in the beginning of this video he says he has been trying to gain weight but can’t. Imagine not being able to gain muscle because your body doesn’t allow you too and being made fun of because of it.
Just thinking the same! I would help
Brother dont use wd40 on the boots! Its petroleum based so after a while it will eat away at the rubber. Use silicon spray it works great and it's safe for rubber. Keep the builds comin! Awesome vids!
I like your wet paper towel trick to keep dust out of the holes. In a pinch, I've used the disposable ear plugs to seal up threaded holes so I could paint without worry. I had the opportunity to help out with powder coating a few things once and they used something similar.
honestly love watching these videos. you give alot of great tips for rebuilds, stuff i wouldnt have thought to do. i also have to do a recone and going to apply these ideas to my sub. thanks for doing what you do
Your video's are so much fun to watch dude! The audio, editing, and filming is quality. I also relate to you and think you're so cool man! Thank you for giving me entertaining car audio content, and keep up the good work. Can't wait to see how the build turns out.
Glad to see you went with the Ceramic paint protection like I and sure others suggested. Will help with any other mishaps and bug removal from driving to shows.
Patiently waiting for more footage!!!!
Hope all is well EXO!
Those look amazing man, loving the progress and I can’t wait to see this build once it’s done :)
one time i was changing an intake manifold gasket and i dropped a small nut in the intake port... yes, the valve was open and it went into the cylinder
😬
Great turn out on the paint job, looks really good bud! For sure shows that you don't need any fancy spray guns to get a great finish! The Van looks flawless as well! Thanks for the video and walk thru EXO, great detail in all you do!
hi EXO you are a genius when i watched you blow them speakers i never imagined this as a outcome very nice. Hearing those subs before there gona sound as good as they look sharp as a razor. Wow how time time flies by.
What I found to be a good way of blocking up holes to prevent any deposits getting in them is disposable ear plugs (the memory foam type) as they can be squeeze into holes and then they expand to seal the hole.
I appreciate all the time you put in to make these videos and all the information I keep learning from you. Thanks alot EXO!! I wish I was a neighbour and not in Australia.. cool videos..!!
I love this project and you explained everything.
Looks amazing EXO. Love the energy in all the vids. Still my favorite youtuber
Exo man I love your car audio videos keep those videos coming out anxious to see the finished product
man exo, i gotta say im super excited for this build... rebuilding those older subs was a genius idea... definitely show us the recone process... i have a gut feeling this system will be legendary lol... 🤷
i started watching u back in the day when u put the sign up in front of your house trying to get people to by with bass or your van with 1 18 in it man the days!
i just had to comment on how good this video was. EXO is the realest and most positive car audio youtuber. thumbs up for sure.
I do gotta say. I love your content my friend. Your videos are what really got me into the bass world and my love for it! Keep up the great work man. 💪
Those speakers were put together with clear loctite from the factory. Blue loctite will melt at the temps you will push rendering it useless. The parts will jiggle but the bolts will be tight.
Theres nothing more satisfying then working on subs. Thats why i love my m3 mojo's so much they literally unbolt and break down so easy.
EXO, you gotta tape 20x20 hvac air filters to the backs of those box fans. It wont catch everything but makes a hell of a difference. I've been spraying for 20 years trust me try it out. Just get a multi pack of the cheap blue fiberglass joints
Love the video exo, subs are huge and you did a great job. Thank you for the educational video brother
This is why it’s so easy to like Exo. He such a positive, down to Earth DIYer
You should open up the flaps of the cardboard box, get a cheap HVAC Duct filter about the same size of the box opening to extract through. Have the box fan sitting behind that pulling air out of the box and through/into the filter. Without something for the overspray to really stick to it's just going to flow around your garage and land on anything else it can stick to.
Finally the story goes on :) Thanks for sharing EXO!
First time subscriber here. Awesome build bro can't wait for the first demo video. Would definitely have u build a blow through for my silverado. Nobody does it here in San Antonio, TX. Again great job on the project van looks awesome 😎
Loving the white and black two tone! White and black are my to go to when painting or when i have a chance to choose a color for something. Can't wait to see them after the cones are in!!! XD
Looks great, can't wait to see it done.
The white black combo is amazing. Love it.
I love your audio builds. Keep it up ill be sure it wil look very nice :D
Pulling out that voice coil was honestly, very satisfying.
Good show EXO
Been watching the channel for years , excited about the build, reminds me of the fun i used to have with car audio
Hey EXO. I used your discount code at showtime electronics for a SMD DD-1. And it came a day earlier than expected. Will definatly use again.
Awesome work, man!
It is so satisfying to DIY things that are part of a passion. :)
Man, it’s awesome to see the old girls getting a refresh. XXX slappers are gonna do the do for sure.
It's looking really good, can't wait to see the finish product 😁
Always love your positivity bro! Keep up the good work!
I just want to say ive been watching you for now 4 years and your editing keeps getting better man keep up the good work
Thanks EXO you're an inspiration you are the man can't wait for the next video
That was a really good video man loved it. Worse things I've done in car audio hooking up amps backwards!!! And dropping RCA's on batteries!!!
Video quality on this one was next level! Thanks Exo!!
They turned out great! True stormtroopers!
My biggest car audio fail happend after I bursted my first windshield. I replaced the windshield myself and it turned out pretty good. When I installed the wipers I smashed one of the wiperarms into the windshield without a blade on it and.... had to replace the windshield right again
AC 205 Stop Leak rejuvenates + adds life 2 rubber... Lil tip from a custom stereo installer from Wisconsin. Back in the dayz.... Nothing like popping down your back passenger seat and having your amp without wires showing able 2 be adjusted from the driver seat. 😉
Cool vid, EXO!! The man with the Bass!
Bro I love the color scheme and the black accents are perfect. It’s all in the detail
Absolutely loving every video right now ! Keep up the great work Bruce 👍
Looking sweet! Especially the two tone with the screws and backplate! 👍👍👍👊
Men u teach me so much about speaker repairs, i feel confident to start repair my own
I'm digging the colors. Nice job.
when you're storing speaker drivers cover them in cling film to keep the dust and debris out believe me it will save you a huge hassle and a headache down the road
Loving the progress keep it up man they look great
Looking forward to seeing them all done!
Looking great man as always.. cant wait to see it done..
Holly shit I just stumbled on your channel I remember 10 years ago when I followed you before you even started that van build damn time flies good to see your still passionate about your hobby
those subs are looking sweet with some leds in background that look amazing
Keep up the good work EXO.
Bruce man you did a superb job on this subwoofer basket and motor. Attention to detail....I like it!
Dude wd-40 eats rubber. Ive had to replace sooo many rubber part on bikes for customers i quit counting. Use belt dressing from your auto parts store
If left on there soaked yes. Spraying and wiping is a non issue. Esp on a driver motor cover. In the rc world we use wd40 to prep tires for rock crawling. Nice n soft n sticky
@@Poizdrc I use liquid wrench, and some specially formula tire sauces for rc tires, I race offroad and oval on carpet, dirt and concrete
All your custom work looks fun!
Love the black/white mix and I think you made a great call/decision doing the white backs with the black bolts! Can also relate to the "Eat and never gain" delima, For me its just metabolism...eat a ton, gain nothing, forever skinny haha sometimes that's life and here I am moving around heavy transformers or subwoofers occasionally.
Bro blowing the subs blew my mind! Thank you for opening my eyes to the custom built subs.
Looking clean EXO! Always fun watching your videos!
A stupid thing I did once - I was helping my father-in-law build a patio and I was going around and cutting the mid-deck supports and got carried away. I cut one of the outside 4x4s which was already lag bolted in and concreted into the ground. that was a fun little thing to dig back up and re-concrete.. *doh*
Your work looks great love the progress
Ur project isn’t stupid bro! It’s an expensive hobby haha! But none the less a great achievement in the works! I started a small system in my coupe! Ur videos help guide me through installs and ideas!
Exo puting in major work on his subs pretty awesome ay 👍🥂🔥🤙😎👍
I’ve been waiting for the vid. Thanks for the content :)
8:05 when your old ass lawnmower starts up after you tried to start 10 years ago and you go AHHHHHH
Its looking good Bruce cant wait to see you flexing the van..as far as stories go i once did almost the same thing over spraying my moms car when i painted my vw bright yellow it covered the whole car front to back she also had a black painted car i stood out bad took me a whole weekend using mineral spirits and rags ill never forget the disappointment in her eyes when she seen what i did 27 years ago remember it like it was yesterday
That first light coat looked like the old skool flexstone look!
Uh oh.. It's starting to look good... Strenuous process to say the least!!! Dope vid bro!!
Great choice in removing the mesh to the pole vent. I was so hoping you would do that.
Subs are coming out beautiful EXO 🤩
Love that white EXO!👀 Look freaking awesome! Nice work bro👊😎💯💨💨💨
Looks awsome man! Cant wait for the rest!
So fireeeee love seeing it exo keep it up playa
My brother has chrones so I could definitely imagine it being tough brotha, wish u the best of luck !
not a big sound guy but still liked and subbed because your attitude is so damn positive! looking forward to seeing you in the feed mah dude.
My 12" blew last week because my car was cold and i didn't wait the sub to heat up rippp, now I'm planning going for an sundown x15 bruh. Exo thank you for being such an inspiration ❤️

Man that two-tone looks beautiful bro!!! I'm super proud of you with the progress!!!

I’m so happy for you!!!!! Van looks great and my god the subs!!!!! I’m so jealous as well! Straight storm troopers! They look amazing!!!!!
Love you work brother. Beautiful stuff
I like the process of how you restoration
I smoked my SCAR Audio 12's DVC 2 Ohm. I got an oscilloscope and adjusted my gain correctly and turned off bass boost. Kind of a blessing as now I have my 2x 12" Sundown SDL DVC 4 Ohms running are there own 500w Alpine mono amp @ 2ohms per sub, These speakers sound better and hit so much harder. I wanted a smaller sealed box for my daily driver to get my trunk space back. I've learned a lot from your channel. Thanks.
How'd you blow yours? I've got two Skar 12's right now ready for an install.
together they'll be 2,500RMS @ 1ohm off the Skar 2000.1 but i'm a bit skeptical,
any advice on how not to blow mine up during their trial?
I’m so jazzed up and happy for ya!!
Looking great Exo 👍
nice video bro, gives me motivation to finish my projects.
Wow those came out looking awesome
Wow that looks awsome. Going to sound awsome when its done.
Looking better then new, good work!
Man those look beautiful... awesome color combo
