  • Off the Grid has many components .... the biggest question asked prolly is ....
    " how much Solar do you need " ?
    well if you can spare the time ? watch this and you may learn something ? well at least learn exactly what we have found to be the way to go :- )
    cheers

    Great video Steve... I'm currently operating off a 700W array with 500AH (24V) battery bank. Love watching your videos as they stay practical and aren't full of BS. Cheers mate. Feel free to follow the development of Banks Creek Retreat in Qld. We are hoping to set up a completely off-grid retreat for others and maybe teach them a few things about permaculture and off-grid living... once we have learnt how to do it ourselves. Keep up the great work.

    Hi Steve,
    This is the best off grid videos I’ve seen explaining how to use solar and how much energy you need,
    Keep up the great work 👍🏼

    took me 30+ years to finally get a weird & wonderful patch work quilt of different panels,(my very first 2 panels are still on roof producing power) 1.5 kilowatts in total (80 amps at 12v in winter)...this eliminated runnin the geny over winter....(1 person domestic situation)....my 240v electric still draws 60 amps & batts sit at 13.3v during the 3-4 hours to make 4L of distilled water...(so in effect its a solar powered still $100 on ebay)...power would not be used on sunny days & batts(400 AHour AGM type) would be floating all day, if not distilling....but those 80 amps on a cold sunny winters day, can drop to 3-5 amps on an over cast rainy day....which still runs the fridge/freezer...u size your system like this...to cover your load on a no sun day..(in my case my fridge)...pc runs off its own batt & panel...''separate' solar systems work really well...if one volts get too low, u can send power across from another backup one.....(again eliminating need to run noisy geny)....a GRAVITY feed header tank is also a great system to use, & cuts out power & pump use...2-3,000L good enough for kitchen bathroom etc....a compost no water dunny another great way to go unless your recyclin your dunny water to orchard etc.....water storage 5,000 gal with 2,000 gal backup.....all this should be DOUBLED for TWO people...never been connected to grid or had power bill in over 30 years, forget what a power black out is....great to see your setup steve

  • @ursodermatt8809
    @ursodermatt8809 7 лет назад +2

    well yes, it depends what you want to hook up on your system. if you cook with electricity and heat the water with electricity etc, it is obvious you will use more electricity.
    conversely of you only have a 5 watt led in the house, you can say i only need a 100w panel and never start the generator.
    also solar panels are cheap and it is quite common to "overpower" the system. that means on a sunny day in summer you might have 5 times more energy than you use. at the other hand on a cloudy day in winter, obviously the overpowered system tides you over much better. keeping in mind YOU have all the wood back up and lpg, you can tide over low sun days with wood and lpg. so, the 3000wp system might work for you. that does not mean it is a cure all.

    Hi I just fell across your channel mate, Well it's so refreshing to finally find someone who thinks a smallish system is the ducks guts to live off like I do !! I just don't have the obscene, gob snacking amounts of money people companies and people say you NEED to have to maintain a reasonable life style !! Compared to your system, my systems tiny but being on the disability pension I'm adding to my system a little at a time as I can save the money. I have to separate systems at the moment, 1 is 600ah of AGM 12v batteries and 400 ah of panels that runs my 12v/24v fridge freezer. 2 is 420ah of 12v flooded lead acid batteries and 200 ah panel that runs everything else or doesn't really, but I'm going to redo both systems and recess everything. Is it OK if I send you a PM (private message) Seeya Rob......I've subbed to your channel !!

    I agree 100%. If you think you "need" a 10,000 watt system, maybe going off grid is not for you. I live quit comfortably on a 1,000 watt system, I'm single though. But two people would be about double that. It's a hard pill for some people to swallow that they are more dependent on the convenience of the grid then they think. But, ironically,they are also the same people that want to "save the planet". Lol

    • @offthegridinoz.994
      @offthegridinoz.994  3 года назад

      They sure do ..... but during the day and at night we still can only pull a max of around 3KW ... That is why I say we live on 3 KW the batteries give us actually 24KW storage but usable only to 30% as to not damage them , so we do have 8KW on hand if they are full ... Solar can give most people a headache understanding the whole picture lolol cheers Steve

  • @NukeFPV
    @NukeFPV 5 лет назад

    How hard is it to really get rid of the need for 240 volts all together ? I mean inverters seem to be such a waste of energy with their heat dissipation and the fact that many 240 volt appliances step the 240 Volts back down anyway to 12v (Tv's etc) or 19v laptop and many other low DC voltages. Do you think you could have the same lifestyle completely without the 240 volt is what I'm asking ? Would a 24 volt solar setup using 12volt fridge etc suffice ?? Cheers, and great video :)

    how long can this system run without recharging the battery system?under the assumption that their was a problem with the solar panel connection or if the sun wasn't providing enough power, then how long can the battery system last without recharging?

    • @offthegridinoz.994
      @offthegridinoz.994  6 лет назад

      That totally depends on how much load any person chooses to try to run of any system ... So it is hard to say really .. As far as our 3 kw , we could get by for 2-3 days max with no input ... but we would have to be careful as to our use over those 3 days ... If we used power as if we had normal charge ? may be 2 days max !!

    I`m looking at leaving everything that requires funds behind. I`m fed up with the mentality of the average joe blow that feels the need to conform to fit in. However I`m going to be considerably down sizing from your setup mate. Using a Transit van and a small caravan attached. My only issue will be water and filtration from poisons and pathogens from run off into any water ways. I`m also not going to be established in 1 area as I want to be somewhat mobile. Wont use power generators and never really gave it considerations as the use requires me to visit a town somewhere.
    You have a lot of creature comforts I`m prepared to go without simply for my sanity and staying away from people that are told they have to walk around a round room while also being told they can only piss in the corner.
    Most people don't realize they have bought into a life that has been marketed to the masses since before they were born.
    I don't vote, nor do the census, never registered but I did secede in 2011 as my own demonstration of my political disgust in the way this country is being ran.
    Only reason I came back to civilization after spending 8 months in the bush was because I got kicked off private land in 2013. I wont make the same mistake again and I don't care if I die out there anyway. I spent over 8 years travelling the entire state of WA and I know off many places I can go and never be found. Wont have any tech like a phone or other traceable devices. Police already have a notice on my file stating I am not to be tracked or traced under any circumstances including a death in the family I left behind in 2010.

      Well Nev ,, mate everyone to there own as the saying goes .. I read allot of sadness and allot of good in your words of truth mate .. If doing what you are going to do addresses your needs at the moment , hey so be it ...
      We are in a similar boat as far as our distaste for many of the things this system runs at us all ... but we choose to some what stand and fight ? but that is just where myself and Kerri are atm ... We may go in another direction at some point and we do talk about many options that we could choose to do or take ... but as I said , making a small stand to drive a small amount of positive thinking out there to as many as we can , is what we will keep doing for a while yet :- )
      hope all your plans work out hey ...

      Break the Chain - it really depends on the sacrifices some are prepared to make. Some just wont let go of many things that are wants, instead of just having needs met. Life has been marketed for well over 100 years and many buy into it hook, line and sinker without thought of consequences in the long run.

    • @noevilea624
      @noevilea624 6 лет назад

      Break the Chain - yeah agreed. I usually just state 100 years because not many are aware of the history so the 100 years is more evident generally. That`s if they want to accept it. Most just dismiss it altogether. I`ve got a mate that wouldn't accept anything unless the facts suit his distorted perception of reality. Many cherry pick while some of us are not only open but aware of the truth of the matter..
