You have to respect the Imperial Officer at 2:16. Charging first into battle and trying to inspire the troops instead of sitting behind the front lines. He even knew Solo, one of his lowly foot soldiers, by name. Definitely a lot different than most high ranking imperials.

In the original Star Wars, the Empire initially only needed to fulfill the role of a very simple fascist state pastiche. Over the course of the series, as the universe is fleshed out, far more complication is layered on. Especially thanks to the prequel trilogy. Essentially, in the wider SW setting the Empire can't really be what it is initially portrayed as in the classic trilogy. The Empire was pulled together out of a very large republic, containing thousands of worlds with hundreds of cultures and peoples.
Basically, outside of the Imperial academies turning out officers and elite stormtroopers, the vast majority of people working with or for the Empire would have to represent a wide variety of viewpoints, ethics, and political beliefs - pulled from so many worlds. This is of course, a reason why a widespread rebellion is so logical. Too many different kinds of people to really control much, or even most, of the population with propaganda.

They trained a militia to help fight off invading separatists that wanted the resources there. After order 66, the empire returns as conquorors, fighting for the resources against the same militants the clones helped train.

Some would say, at least a bit of force presence is necessary for a story to be true Star Wars, but RO would've also worked without Darth Vader in action or the "I'm one with the force" thing. Imagine a small planet just rebelling against the empire or Coruscant underworld stories. I love the force and lightsabers but watching a simple being fighting in a world actually dominated by overpowering "higher beings" provides an attraction.

I love how this short scene is just so perfect.
It shows the Army as a combined arms warfare machine which air assaults in armored fighting vehicles with support of infantry while close air support missions are being conducted. The one real officer we see before dying recognizes Solo despite the chaos of battle immediately and motivates him and his unit with positive reinforcement.
Lore wise, Vader and more competent Imperials favored Generals over the Admirals, as the Army and General Staff didn’t enjoy the overwhelming funding and support of the Navy, which resulted in a pragmatic and efficient fighting force which favored effectiveness and competency above all else. Compared to the Navy which never struggled and grew complacent and heavily rigid, where Solo is instantly sacked for disobeying an order which would have gotten him killed, the Army awards outside the box thinking and the ability to take action without a crippling chain of command.

When you have to capture locations intact without wrecking them completely it's going to devolve into a firefight, where the defenders have the advantage of digging in and waiting for you to come at them. Even though it's likely the Empire will eventually win since they can pull in troops and resources from all over the galaxy, while the defenders only have their local resources and population, it's going to be an absolutely miserable time for the soldiers and leaders on the ground.

I say they should do a movie with the feel of this scene, and with a totally loyal Imperial lead. They can probably set it around the Empire’s early years when people were still on board with it, with our protagonist joining a squad of Stormtroopers to repress any acts of terror in this transition period.
It would be a good look into the earliest days of the Empire, and...if they made the protagonist a Stormtrooper, it could totally bring a fresh new perspective of the idea that was introduced with Finn in the sequel trilogy.

@asd asd if Disney wants to stick to “the Empire are just space Nazis” this could be a really powerful way of showing it without being too preachy. Show a citizen of the empire see a rise in terrorism around the galaxy (the Rebel empire forming) and they want to do their part to stop it. Goes from a simple patriotic peace keeper to actual concentration camps and genocides happening for “the greater good”. I’m not too familiar with the lore, but maybe the climax of the movie could be when the rebels help rescue the Wookiees and our Stormtrooper dies during the battle or gets captured.

I'm sure a lot of us would love to see a Star Wars movie from an Imperial perspective that shows both the benefits and flaws of both Imperial and Rebel ideology. Having extremists like Saw and his men mixed with the draconian doctrine of the Empire but understanding that life under the Empire can be a drastic improvement to life during the Republic. Maybe in the end the main character could die fighting for the Empire and protecting their family and loved ones or innocents in general from a rebel extremist attack, an attack so severe that it is what causes the Rebels to change their tactics to what we know of the modern Rebel Alliance.

I wish there was more units shown in Star Wars like this, as in the standard Imperial trooper, and the Stormtroopers being elite, not goofballs flying around like ragdolls. Then you would actually have an intimidating antagonist again, if the rebels are just “sooooo badass" ALL of the time then them destroying anything imperial doesn't feel earned or have any weight to it.

I wish the movie had ended with Han fleeing as the Crimson Dawn is suddenly on the receiving end of an Imperial attack like this. If Han saw how the Imperial Army was made of men just like him, seeing it afar and faceless should have been what made him the man we knew in Episode IV. He would remember what it was like to be confused and terrified in all the dust and laserfire. So maybe when Han and Co. are making a break for it as the Crimson Dawn is distracted by the planet's sparse Imperial garrison...the sky flickers, and a Star Destroyer exits hyperspace. We get to see Vos' face go from irritated to shocked to nervous as he realizes that he bit off more than he could chew by killing that Imperial official at the start of the film, however minor the guy may have been.
Imagine how Han would be if he got such an amazing example of how the Empire _always_ gets the last word. Dryden Vos has more power and influence than Han could ever think he would achieve, but imagine how that would inform seeing a _single_ Star Destroyer tear down everything Vos had ever built for going one step too far. And as Han watches the TIE fighters strafe Vos' men and landing crafts deploy Imperial soldiers, he'd also realize that his own experience wasn't special. He didn't have some uniquely-traumatizing experience that would undo the Empire if only more soldiers endured and survived it. We could even end with a shaken Han (and Chewie) in some distant bar, looking up to a broadcast of an inspiring Imperial news report about the defeat of the Vos-branch of the Crimson Dawn.
