    I have a vintage forest green one that was issued to Rangers from the U.S. Forest Service, and it’s consistently the jacket I reach for in the late fall/early winter.

      Is your ranger version actually wool? The two I saw where a cotton nylon blend. Although if they made a wool version too, I"ll definitely be keeping an eye out

      Dude! Been trying to find exact info on mine, but it’s a USFS-issue double cruiser with snap buttons that I found at a thrift for, I kid you not, $10. Could be a quick resell but I will never let it go. Oh, and it had a book of matches and two 12 gauge shells in the pocket.

    I don’t really see a valid argument for having a liner in this jacket for comfort. Any time it’s cold enough outside to wear a double mac (or even a regular mac), you’ll be wearing a sweater or at least some kind of long sleeve shirt. These are meant to be a final outer layer, not something to just throw on with a t-shirt.

    • @bullred9498
      @bullred9498 2 года назад +1

      Last night I was wearing my wool jacket from Bemidji Woolen Mills, it’s 85% wool and 15% nylon, 18-19oz per yd, it was around 35 with the windchill and all I had underneath was a t shirt, you don’t need long sleeve anything unless you’re a complainer, wool is so warm and blocks the wind very well so I could just imagine how warm one of these would be

    • @Newspeak.
      @Newspeak. 2 года назад

      I totally agree I don’t understand that complaint at all myself. I always am at least wearing a long sleeve base layer with my single Mac let alone a double.

    • @TjPhysicist
      @TjPhysicist 2 года назад

      @@Newspeak. the thing to remember as well is, people layer differential based on personal needs and also they react to wool very differently. I've seen plenty of people who can wear this jacket even against bare skin and they'd be mostly ok... For me otoh, there are some 180gsm merino wool that can make me itchy (I do have 200+gsm base layers that I use but there are only some that are ok depending on the size of the wool strands)

    And I have watched the watch reviews because i have a 1967 GMT pepsi, still keeping good time.
    You've got good taste 👌
    Cheers to you 🍻 👏 ☮️
    (yes, it's a game pocket. Filson called it a "map pocket" to not turn ppl off. I keep a scarf folded flat in it.. a Pendleton scarf of course. But the last few years i just wear a hoodie)
    This jacket works well with just a turtleneck if you live where it's cold. It's bulky, so it's nice to take it off when you go inside and cool off ~

      Maps are (were) traditionally folded up, and you wouldn't need a pass-thru design.

      "Cruiser" means Timber Cruiser.
      These were scouts employed by lumber companies to work in the wilderness scouting for stands of trees/forest the companies would want to harvest. They would be out for weeks surveying on their own and needed something they could live in, and shoot the errant grizzly or cougar they might encounter 😉 ~

    is the double overkill or too hard to layer if its mostly from 50f to 20f and only below 20 one to two times a winter? I am set on mackinaw (and vest) but versatility and mobility is important since I usually layer. The double does not look as stiff as I thought though.
    This video answers more of my questions than any of the others. Thanks.
    I am a 36" chest at 5'9" and built like you, could I easily fit a sweater with a wool vest under a size 36 single? Or should I still size up to 38 in a single mac if I want those layers to not feel tight and be able to bend, twist or use my arms? I have plenty of big loose things, but I want my mack to fit a few layers, but not feel huge or look big when I wear it unlayered.
    Thanks to any who answer. I am looking at older ones sized in numbers, the new sizing is much less specific and easy to figure. What is hard to figure is sizing in a brand you can not find in person. Online sizing has failed me a few times and recommendations from experienced proves much more valuable!

    • @TheIronSnail
      @TheIronSnail  3 года назад

      I’d definitely go 38 there! As for overkill I say YES go for the single 100%

    I don't know if you realize, but you are one of the few videos about this jacket on RUclips. There is the other one you mention (which I have seen now, and you're right; wtf?), and there are some that have crap titles so it's impossible to find. It's all about the single, not the double. Well, I am fkng cold, and i want the fkng double. So, I've watched this video like three times and plan to watch it again. I appreciate it. Although, uh, I could still use some more help, so... I don't even know what I need. Is it too late for me to just buy this one? There aren't any on eBay anymore hardly, and apparently Filson no longer makes them?? I picked a crap time for this obsession, and you know what? You really fed my obsession. It's a good thing I ended up really liking you. But that other guy with the Weatherwool coat or whatever? Yeah, I still don't like him. I mean, I'd buy his Filson though. It does not seem possible to get a 36 for $200. Even 38s seem harder to find. Okay, thanks. I vented. More importantly, thanks for the video. I've enjoyed more of your videos now, too, so... yeah. Now we're stuck with each other. As you can see, I write like you talk, but I do not have the benefit of snappy editing. ;)

      @@TheIronSnail The fit you want is the fit to get, but I like this type of jacket to be sort of a large cape rather than anything form-fitting. Also, the rear pocket (Filson calls it a map or chart pocket, but everyone knows that is for game) has more capacity if the coat is a bit oversized, and with a larger coat it does not appear that one has some sort of untoward hump extending from his lower back when carrying game in that pocket.

    • @jasonconklin8172
      @jasonconklin8172 2 года назад

      I believe both incorrect , 26 oz was single cruiser ,now same 24 as doubles always had have owned new old filsons not close 4 quality! But 2 use common companys to quality vs filson now the filsons still way ahead but no qualty any where like 70 years ago anywhere . So how what can u conpair a filson 2 ? Nothing in its working mans legue , yet id say most tree hugging yuppys dont have clu how tough and life long this coat used 2 b

  • @jasonconklin8172
    @jasonconklin8172 2 года назад

    Ok 1st of all , this coat was made 4 work not relly designed for working people loggers miners construction farmers , 2 it will rarely used in temp unless under 20 negative also ur new filson is not made here no u got no clu till u layed under equipment fixing at 30 negative temps abuse of jacket till any 1 can understand that quality has went to china not old filson quality , sizes varying much now not b4 in same sized coats , rarely button fell off b4 now a regular basis i got both , no clu where u say 200$ on line cause its not happening and actually used filson is more cause people who wore filson 30 years ago kno see feel different in the new coat the other thing came 38 40 42 44 ect now s m L Ex 2x 3x soo if ur between sizes ur big or small they were all about customer b4 ,now all corporate bandits at filson ! Y they charge what they do as its all outsourcing if they were made here id think nothing about the 5to 600 $ but not outsourcing as they do relly shows how much this outfit relly quit caring once sold

    • @TheIronSnail
      @TheIronSnail  3 года назад +1

      Great question! I don’t think it is, it’s very warm but you can get a Schott 32oz Peacoat that I think will be warmer and if you look at Dehen 1920 I think their Stalwart 2.0 may also beat this in terms of warmth! By how much though is the question!

      @@TheIronSnail hrmmm what about 5'11" and 155 lbs. and an actual 36" chest (I measured today! noooood) I think this video finally helped me decide I'd be best/okay with 36 and possibly unhappy in a 38 (although the way you rock it makes it look like a sensible option... seems if one is to buy a baggier jacket, this or this type might be the one to do)

    Reasons I wouldn't but a Filson Mack.:
    1. If its for bad weather IT should have a Hood or at least great collar.
    2. No liner for 500 bucks. IT was good enough for poeople hunting ducks in the 40s. If i pay that much money. IT Has to be versatile. "You have to wear this and that for your Mack to work" is not good enough.
    2. No zipper. No storm flaps. And od you choose Buttons IT Has to be canadian. Regular Buttons srsly? So I pay half-a-grand and still have to go to tailor each time button gives out on me...?
    In short - long time ago this was usefull,now I see IT as heritage piece to sell...shame as the wool quality is phenomenal...but at that price point it Has to perform.

    • @TheIronSnail
      @TheIronSnail  3 года назад +1

      I really feel both of those points honestly. No liner and no hood REALLY make it antiquated. Which some people still like but a hood to me is a life saver (literally!)

    • @TjPhysicist
      @TjPhysicist 2 года назад

      Agreed. The jac shirt is far superior for some of these reasons. It's still 26oz mackinaw but with a cotton lining ( I don't understand why a thick warm wool jacket doesn't have a liner, thick wool is poky), still no zipper but snap on buttons, so has a storm flap naturally (though I personally dislike zips). Best of all, it's like$300, which makes it easier to accept and at that point i just use it as mid layer, so I still have a goretex or waxed canvas Shell with a hood over it.

    • @testiculartorsion6047
      @testiculartorsion6047 2 года назад +1

      Dont really understand the liner part. For the most part you'll never directly touch the inside since you'll be wearing long sleeved shirts/flannels.
      Plus adding a liner would make it less versatile, cause the mackinaw cruiser is the only jacket i own that i can both use in deep winter with layers and in early spring (in that 50-65 degree range) with just use it with a t-shit alone. If it had a liner it'd make it less breathable and less versatile.
