Great video ! I personally keep it super simple. awesome video, thanks for sharing, one idea to trigger the strikes - try slowly raising your jig, walleyes will slam it as they think bait is getting away - for sure!
Yeah winter they can be very fussy and I don't know where they all go. Usually you have to be quite focused on a piece of structure in the evening. Otherwise they can be absent the majority of the day. I think they just lay on the bottom most of the time.
When I fish late ice pike I use a rippin rap to get em to come in. It grabs their attention. Then I drop a dead minnow on the bottom and pull the rippin rap. Every single time that pike takes the minnow, eats it and spits it immediately then eats it for real the next time. I also fish perch similarly. So many people raise em off the bottom. When one comes in I drop the minnow to the bottom and they just attack it. Fun to watch on camera.
Oh yeah that sounds deadly! That's what I usually do for pike too even with lures. drop it on the bottom and when they slide in just slowly do one wiggle and they crush it most often.
Very interesting! I live in Ontario. We are able to use live minnows, and seeing this gives me another tactic haha Might work for finicky eyes! Thanks! Love your vids 😀

I have a couple of underwater camera videos with some trout on my page... But it is very difficult to get quality shots... As I'm sure you're well aware of by now :-)
I am familiar with the "bump" test and, personally, think you've rationalized it correctly. With or without electronics it's the bane of fishing if you strike at the first bump. The fish obviously weren't feeding aggressively - more like a take-it-or-leave-it - mood. I'm thinking live minnows, smaller live minnows, or perhaps an exotic offering might have worked but I don't have a high degree of confidence after viewing this. So many fish, so little bites. (I think you may be on to something with the dead minnow on the bottom dropper.)
Glenn Krzeminski live minnows are illegal to use in Canada where we fish, so that is never an option for us. I think best bet is dead minnow on bottom. my uncle tried it out the following week at a different lake and worked great.
The Fishing Doctors Adventures Wow! No live minnows?!? I'm surprised. Can you use any live bait? I've done wonders with 2-inch worms (sometimes they stretch to 4 inches) behind a jig head or under a Swedish Pimple.
Glenn Krzeminski yeah we can use worms and leaches. but bait stores don't supply them here in the winter. have to save some worms. only problem is when I've tried before they end up freezing. it's too cold up here haha!
A Lindy rig as far as i have used them is for open water fishing. This is ice fishing. I use lindy type rigs open water and have videos bottom bouncing with them in open water.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures Definitely, but I once saw a video of Al Lindy use one in conjunction with a worm inflator for ice walleye. I'm sure it would be more effective as a trolling lure, but just an idea. Great videos.
Thanks for the information. Seems you are correct about fish being near sighted. I think given water turbidity is quite often a limiting factor it doesn't make sense that they would need long distance clarity. They need more focal clarity when something is about the enter their mouth. But the way I have seen trout come in and target a single chironomid from a long distance in clear water I think they still have pretty good vision because I can barely even see the fly at that distance. Pretty amazing these fish!
You mentioned the walleyes in that lake see a lot of fishing pressure and are tough to catch. What kind of areas are you finding them in during the day in a pressured lake like that? Are they relating to structure or roaming the basin?
Never let your bait sit still in the water like that. It allows the walleye to gain vision of the hook and they will be less likely to bite once they identify the hook. Just work it a little quicker and aggressive and you will increase that reaction bite chance!
Thanks for your insight. This is a dead stick jaw jacker. It doesnt move. It caught most of the fish that day where our jigging rods caught nothing. In fishing I have learned to never say never.
What kind of setup do you use for your gopro for these underwater videos . of course the waterproof casing but what else like on a line with tripod or what?
Leaky Boat Yup, just the GoPro on a small tripod attached to a fishing line and let down another hole. I just look down the hole to line up the camera and hope for the best. I'll make a video sometime that shows the set up.

Now how do we get them to bite ? They clearly are interested but cautious. Do we hide the hook ? Move the bait faster so they dont have time to inspect it ?
In this case we found that laying the hook and minnow directly on the bottom like a dead minnow was most effective. They are used to picking up dead minnows off the bottom and it is the easiest presentation to mimic. Try it out, works amazing in pressured fisheries.
@@SickBuckNaStY I thought I said it was illegal to use live minnows where I fish already. Doesn't matter if you fish Mondays or Sundays, January or July it is all the same. Illegal.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures First Video I've Seen of Yours Actually And Dam That Kinda Sucks I Love Fishing w/ Live Bait... So What Do Yo Think About That Rule? & Is It All Live Bait Is Prohibited Then & I'm Guessing It's In Only A Select Body of Water & For Conservation Efforts?
@@SickBuckNaStY No it is all of western Canada where I fish that using live minnows is illegal. All of Saskatchewan, Alberta and in British Columbia you are not even allowed to use dead minnows. You can use like worms and leeches, just no live fish. It is to protect the resource from introduction of non native species. Since you have asked what I think about the rule, "I think if you can't catch fish without the use of live minnows you aren't much of a fisherman." I've never used live minnows for bait and have never felt I needed them to catch fish. Plus it seems a little cruel to hook a live fish and let it struggle till it gets destroyed by a sportfish. Whatever floats your boat though. Probably if it was legal where I fished I would think differently.
May work but there are no shad in Alberta. Just these spot tail shiners as primary forage in this lake. But we have layed the minnows on bottom with a jig and it does work.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures no kidding?. We catch tons of big pike on dead bait. But you are the first I've seen using dead bait for walleyes. is that a local lake regulation or a state regulation that you have to use dead minnows?.
@@stickjr.3715 No live minnows in the whole Province of Alberta in Canada. I believe Saskatchewan is the same. We can't even use dead minnows in British Columbia.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures huh. I'll be damned. If you make your way through Wisconsin in the near future. We can use some live bait down here. 😁. Keep up your hard work. Enjoyed your information and video.
It appears those walleyes have been caught before and know that if they get caught they won't be able to breathe for a few minutes And yet people say they have a 5 second memory span but look at em There like nervous kids try not to break anything
Shalle Lukye it really depends. In this video we are fishing in about 8 to 12 feet of water. In this location we catch walleye all day long but morning and evening is best.
You underestimate fish. How do you know they don't have memory? The research and this behavior quite easily demonstrates that fish from pressured fisheries learn to be more careful about what they eat.
This is from one day of fishing. The video was gathered with a gopro down the hole and I did not watch the video till after fishing. The jaw jackers were catching pretty good collectively so didn't think there was an issue. Usually less action when the camera is right beside presentation so I just figured that was the problem. I'm not sure how much more lively a dead minnow can get? How do you make dead minnows lively? We are not allowed live bait in Alberta, canada. Actually this video did change my presentation a bunch and in my new videos you can see how I rig it. Simpler jig and minnow set up.
The Fishing Doctors Adventures OK, I didn't know. I hope the rules don't ever get that strict here in South Dakota. My comment was nothing against your video just a suggestion.
I know I was just explaining what you're seeing. People often don't realize this is not something I'm watching while fishing. It only changes future fishing days. Yeah the live bait fish is not allowed because it can introduce non native fish to fisheries. We still catch lots of fish up here without live minnows.
The Fishing Doctors Adventures we have a similar problem down here with the Asian carp, the bighead and silver carp invading our waters. Now we are no longer allowed to catch and keep bait from our rivers and streams in eastern South Dakota.
Clean up crew!!! U just said it your self if they don’t bite a foot off botttom drop the bait on the bottom of jig and let it bounce on bottom stirring up dirt causing interest the depends on light clouds and blah blah blah...you can make them interested just gotta play by their rules
Phawkme Please the jig was hanging below a jaw jacker. Nobody jigging. I was able to make a lot of deductions after watching the video. Some of this stuff I never knew before the video.
Naition Legere I don't think it would have changed anything unless it was laying on the bottom like I said in the video. it looks high off bottom but it's not that's just the camera angle and fish eye lens on the gopro.
Hey thanks for the advice. You might not realize what is going on here. This is a stationary lure that is below a Jaw Jacker, which is an automatic fish hooker. We were not watching the video while it was filming because this was a GoPro on the bottom of the lake. We didn't see the fish swimming by in proximity to the hook. Just dropped it down the usual 6 to 12 inches off the bottom which seems to work well. Most walleye I catch come up to a bait so I usually like it above them. If you look at their eyes they look up and most times hit prey above them. They tend to be more skittish with the camera down. Once the camera is gone we get a lot more fish on the dead stick Jaw Jacker.
Here you can watch these other videos of mine if you want to see us hauling in walleye ruclips.net/video/ynLUwmeMGfQ/видео.html ruclips.net/video/fP4T851K01I/видео.html
The bait looks horrible down there, no surprise they aren’t hitting it. Jigging walleyes and perch it’s about presentation and that looked like exactly what it was. Get a better lure and jig minnow heads and see how they bite it. Obviously fish go through periods of not biting anyways due to weather systems, time of day etc. but the presentation has to be what they want and by the looks of it they didn’t want that. If your gonna let a minnow sit down there hook it behind the dorsal fin with just a plain hook and let it swim natural. Idk may I’m missing the point of the video. But if the point is to get the fish to bite than yeah horrible bait presentation. JMO
Thanks for your opinion but you're correct that you don't understand what is going on. This is a dead sticked minnow on a jig. The minnow was a frozen, dead minnow. So I actually don't think hooking it behind the dorsal will let a dead minnow swim. If you are talking about using live bait, that is not what this is. LIVE bait is ILLEGAL where we fish as I have said in many comments. I think any googan could probably catch a walleye on a live minnow. We were jigging minnow heads and flutter spoons around this jaw jacker and not even marking fish while this set up was getting plenty of attention and catching fish. You have to understand the fish are a little leary since I have a gopro on a tripod a few feet from the bait as well. The point is not showing the perfect way to catch a walleye. I don't see that stated anywhere. It just shows walleye behavior in a pressured lake to a dead sticked jig and minnow.
Great footage but with that lousy bait you aint getting nothing. Looks so unnatural and disgusting. Pound bottom with live minnow and keep it on bottom.
Yeah that's totally illegal to do here. We caught plenty on this set up that day, they're just a bit camera shy. We can only use dead frozen bait here in Alberta. This was on a stationary jaw jacker.
@@matbob7249 Yeah I've only ever used dead frozen bait so I'm very used to it. Quite effective most of the time up here. Using live minnows almost seems too good to be true... a little bit like cheating from where we grew up. I know I've watch lots of videos and it is highly effective.
Esox Addict experimental, at that time thought it might add some attraction. Sure brought the fish in. Now I have dialed my jaw jacker presentation to just a vmc jig head and no stinger. You haven't seen more recent videos I assume. Initially struggled with hook ups even with a stinger. After changing rods around and trigger tension I have it working much better without need of stinger and bulky jig.
The Fishing Doctors Adventures the problem I saw saw was the blade hanging down from the jig. I don't think that had any thing to do with bringing the fish in I think it's why a lot of them didn't bite, even the one that u did catch stopped at the blade. Live bait is illegal over there like Manitoba? Jawjacker definitely has a little learning curve I'm actually making a few for Xmas presents and I will checkout dome of your newer stuff.

In this case we found that laying the hook and minnow directly on the bottom like a dead minnow was most effective. They are used to picking up dead minnows off the bottom and it is the easiest presentation to mimic. Try it out, works amazing in pressured fisheries.
Awesome video keep em coming!! Where about on pigeon were you fishing when you took this video?
Clayton Lawrence we were kind of on the north west basin.
Really good thx for the tips been on the south side mostly and it's been slow fishing so far
What If You Just Use Live Minnows?
That would be illegal where I fish.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures Really? Is That All Year or Just Part of The Year?
Great video! I love creating underwater fishing vids as well! My latest video I had a bass eat my jig right on the lense !🔥
I will check it out, yeah that was a pretty sweet video you made.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures thanks man, nothing better than seeing a fish strike in its natural habitat
@@MathewsFishing Always fascinating to see
I will try this we still have Ice lol
Good luckt out there!
What if u lay a dead shad at the bottom???
May work but there are no shad in Alberta. Just these spot tail shiners as primary forage in this lake. But we have layed the minnows on bottom with a jig and it does work.
Guess I'd try some new tactics different baits
Tina Hoffman yup
what camera do you have ? nice vid
Its just a GoPro hero in a dive case.
Dead bait for walleyes. That is awesome.
That is all we are allowed to use.
@@stickjr.3715 Thanks for watching and glad you like it. Good luck with the live bait. I'm sure you guys will be slaying. How is the ice this year?
That's awesome, hope to see more of these kinds.... Do you use just go pros or do you have and actual ice fishing camera? That was very clear
+YooperRack22 ! I use a GoPro, thanks.
It appears those walleyes have been caught before and know that if they get caught they won't be able to breathe for a few minutes
And yet people say they have a 5 second memory span but look at em
There like nervous kids try not to break anything
I think fish do get habituated to being caught and recognize that there is a difference between the real deal and a lure.
How deep do you fish? And what time of day?
Shalle Lukye it really depends. In this video we are fishing in about 8 to 12 feet of water. In this location we catch walleye all day long but morning and evening is best.
Still the city of champions!! Ha
You Give them too much credit. They don't have a memory. they are just reflexive. they don't eat it causes its not time to eat
You underestimate fish. How do you know they don't have memory? The research and this behavior quite easily demonstrates that fish from pressured fisheries learn to be more careful about what they eat.
What cam you use?
This was on my Gopro.
Walleye are the women of the fish world, very finicky and you need patience to deal with their bullsh*t!!
Hahaha, I have never heard it put that way. But if you are right they might turn on with a good massage!
Did you ever think about changing your presentation or putting a more lively minnow on?
Chuck Englert that's the trouble they're trying to avoid here.
Hi... what camera are you using??
My old GoPro Hero in the dive housing.
Not off mood. Become one with the chum, they will eat it.
Ok, well sometimes it doesn't work like that in fishing.
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures i wish it was all the time.

I would’ve suggested a live minnow.
But that would be illegal and I am not a Poacher.
I think you need live bait to interest them
+Tate Loves Hockey And Fishing live bait is actually illegal where I fish.
Ohh OK. Sorry I didn't know
+Tate Loves Hockey And Fishing no problem.
There learning lol
Always learning.
I've heard Walleye taste with their lips, I think that's what they're doing with the Bump Test
Yeah you may be on the right track there if they can.
Pigeon lake I do 99% of my fishing there
Oh wow thats a lot, I do about 1% of my fishing at Pigeon. You never feel like going someplace else?
Just use live bait that they can smell. Them fish know fake stuff when they see it!
Live bait isn't allowed in Alberta.
That would be illegal though in Alberta as BiggsHoson47 has stated.
All that catch and release is going against you.Eyes are getting hip to your jigs and lures now.
No they're still too easy to catch. To many around with all our catch and release regs.

@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures thanks man
your bait is way to high .. they want it close to bottom
Naition Legere I don't think it would have changed anything unless it was laying on the bottom like I said in the video. it looks high off bottom but it's not that's just the camera angle and fish eye lens on the gopro.
looks higher then 3 inch . if they can swim under its probly to high. nd if still no bite beat it off the bottom to stir up mud
Here you can watch these other videos of mine if you want to see us hauling in walleye ruclips.net/video/ynLUwmeMGfQ/видео.html ruclips.net/video/fP4T851K01I/видео.html
makes sense .
@@TheFishingDoctorsAdventures where you from?
@@jasonmunoz7285 This is Pigeon Lake, Alberta.
bad movement of the bait
Jaw Jacker is a deadstick. It doesn't move.
The Fishing Doctors Adventures i didn’t know. Move here to USA you can fish the way you want 😀. Anyways great video and thank you!
@@matbob7249 Yeah I've only ever used dead frozen bait so I'm very used to it. Quite effective most of the time up here. Using live minnows almost seems too good to be true... a little bit like cheating from where we grew up. I know I've watch lots of videos and it is highly effective.
They don't look very healthy
How did you assess their health? I think they are very healthy. They may not be obese fish, but they're healthy.
That might be the worst looking dead stick presentation I've ever seen why have a blade on a jig your not jigging
We are in Alberta no live bait allowed.
Esox Addict Love the name! I have some good Bass and Esox content if you're interested.
