  • Join Tabletop Turtle as Mike explores all the board games he played released in 2023. It wasn't the best of years for board games, but there certainly were some truly amazing games released this year. So sit your butt down and let him tier rank your favorite board game of 2023 into the D category and then laugh! Look at this video as less of a reviewer giving a measured highly researched perspective on a game and more like a dude who just barged into your home, sat across from you at your dinner table during your meal and just started rambling about board games he likes and hates this year. Enjoy!

    Mike has a lot of controversial opinions in this video on some board games you might love, so just make sure to send your hate to him and not myself. I'm not joining Mike in this because he played games without me because he's a meanie.
    Also, he rated some key games from our top 10 of 2023 list WAY too low!
    And please don't play a drinking game over how often Mike says "solid". We don't want a new subscriber dying on us. Thank you.

      I agree but for me, Hegemony and Station Fall are the worst games I have played in years, we really gave it a try and wanted to like it .... and it does not work ... too chaotic and unbalanced!

    • @TabletopTurtle
      @TabletopTurtle  6 месяцев назад

      @@Berndr That's fair. I think with Hegemony especially the game can feel like it's not balanced at all because it's so player balanced that those first few early games will feel really swingy and chaotic. Our first game my buddy played the Working Class and he just shot right up there and we couldn't figure out how to stop him. Now we see the problem was the Middle Class lowering their cost of goods to almost nothing and keeping them there.

    Thanks for sharing. WOW, that was a lot of games for a year. Nicely done.
    Of your S games I have The White Castle and I agree with you. It's a lot of game (and I mean A LOT) relative to the size and price. Which IMHO, makes it a No Brainer to buy and try.
    I would get Voidfall and/or StationFall if not for the huge ruleset and learning curve. Also, I think VF takes up a lot of table space. Eeek! Unfortunately, Hegemony may be similar regarding ruleset. Dang it. I mainly play solo or 2 player, which causes some games to get ruled out. Ruled out?

    • @TabletopTurtle
      @TabletopTurtle  6 месяцев назад

      I'll have to spread out the games this year instead of trying to jam them all into the last few months and then go crazy online.
      For White Castle it's true. We don't talk about price a lot, but in this economy it really does feel like we might need to start and that game is at a wonderful price point. I think there is a lot of people, ourselves included sometimes, that are starting to feel like we're being priced out of the hobby as games continue to get more and more expensive.
      Voidfall might be a little too tough for a small table. Time to head to Ikea and buy a bigger table? Or you could develop long-term back problems and just play on the floor. I wouldn't worry too much about the rules of Hegemony. It's actually not that hard of a game; however, I don't know if it would provide a good solo or 2 player experience. It really does feel like a 4 player and possibly 3 player game at its best.

    • @tonybowers9490
      @tonybowers9490 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the reply. I just watched your Voidfall review and now I'm second guessing myself and may purchase it (if I can find it). I think it would primarily be for solo and maybe 2 player. But, I'm not sure if my table is large enough for it. Roughly, how much space does it take up? @@TabletopTurtle

    • @TabletopTurtle
      @TabletopTurtle  6 месяцев назад

      @@tonybowers9490 I think if you're exclusively playing two players it shouldn't be too much of an issue. I remember a thread on BGG discussing it not long ago and people were showing some pictures of some fairly small(ish) tables with the game on it. It's not like Twilight Imperium or anything. It's actually a really cool two player game! Kim and I played it a lot at 2.

    • @TabletopTurtle
      @TabletopTurtle  5 месяцев назад

      It's a lot of fun but at that price point I don't think you should take the risk, just in case you and your wife don't enjoy it. Wait for someone local to sell it used? Although, you could buy it and sell it if you don't like it. Games don't seem to depreciate in value much if you sell them while they're still hot.

      @@TabletopTurtle yes, I was lucky with Amalfi renaissance. Bought it when limited at $80, sold it for same price two weeks later, then next batch came out for $60. lol! Best thing is buying a game in a batch used for $20 (pax renaissance) then reselling it a day later for $60. These are my most precious gaming memories! One of my best was a guy giving me ‘allegiance a realm divided’ for free, which I sold a year later for $350. Did you ever play ashes reborn? This is one that has terrible resale value, (everyone getting rid of first edition for $10) and even though new edition has been improved, it still has the same bgg listing which everyone associates with bad first edition, making the ‘reborn’ edition also hard to sell so I debate if $60 new is worth it when resell would be $20 at best. Sometimes have to wait years to see newer games show up on Facebook marketplace. Currently, I see lots of mage knights for sale.

If you only know a couple of games, the world is your oyster. If you know hundreds of games, it's much harder to find such a game. So thank you for your opinions, saved me lots of mis-buys.

    Of the games on this list, I've played Forest Shuffle, Point City, Faraway, Earth, & Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game.
    I definitely agree that Forest Shuffle is an A game, I'm probably going to buy it next time I place an order. Point City I enjoyed, I would've put it in B but I definitely see your points about it. Faraway was a B for me, really cool scoring mechanism in that one but the other mechanisms feel a bit standard, I guess? I enjoy drafting and set collection, but the way you do that in Faraway didn't feel too different. (Which is okay, I don't mind games that don't reinvent the wheel, just stopped this game from making to an A like it could've been).
    Earth was a B for me. I played it when it came out on BGA because people were talking about how it "replaced Race for the Galaxy and Wingspan". Race for the Galaxy is in my top 10 of all time, so I tried it fast. It was a good game, but it didn't replace either RftG or Wingspan for me. Great game, just all the hype about it made it sound like it would be an S when it reality it was just a B.
    As for Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game, that one is my favorite of these games. I love deckbuilding as a mechanic which helps, and I like Star Wars casually. The attacking out of the galaxy row is really cool, and tactically manipulating which bases you bring out really make this game fun. That one's an S for me.
    Really cool list! I've wanted to try a ton of these games, and there are some I haven't heard a lot about (like Raising Robots and Robot Quest Arena, both of which are now on my to-check-out list)

I’m seeing quite a few game channels who pretend to be sociable and smile a lot, but never respond to anyone. Not even liking the comment. I don’t understand these people. Just found your channel, you appear to have fairly similar taste in games to me, so I will have to check out your other videos.
    Given the similar tastes, I am rather worried on Europa Universalis. I backed it figuring I don't have a civ game and easier to get a multihour solo board game to the table than learn and commit to a EU4 game. But it arrived same week as Frosthaven and so I've yet to do more than open the box. I'm hoping it plays better solo than your 4p experience.

    • @TabletopTurtle
      @TabletopTurtle  5 месяцев назад

      I can't even imagine what that would be like solo player. Worth a shot, I suppose. Hopefully if you don't enjoy it the resale value is great. I think when a board game starts trying to emulate a video game too much I start thinking: Maybe I should just play the video game. I like when the board game is sort of inspired by the video game, like with Anno 1800.

      @@TabletopTurtle Yes, that is not ideal, though as someone who likes complex games I prefer that to the other direction of taking a board game and making it into a PC game. I mean turning it into a game, not just making a port like BGA so people can play digitally. I may love Gloomhaven, but if I'm going to play a PC party combat game I could play Baldur's Gate. I don't need all the mechanics simplified down and my storyline to fit on a couple cards anymore.

    I like seeing people rank games based on their own individual opinions and experiences rather than hype the same games over and over again. There was only one I strongly disagree with- please don't judge Legacy of Yu based on the Tabletopia version, it's not the full version. It doesn't include ANY of the story elements, all of those change the game up by adding more cards, more objectives, new rules, etc! None of that is present on Tabletopia.

    I played Stationfall twice and I think this game is bad. It is weird that people love it so much because often I heard people saying that "Take that" games are bad. I don't agree to that statement except when it gets to a ridiculous degree like in Stationfall. You can literally destroy the game of someone else with 1 in a single turn by throwing his character in space or kill him with a gun. If I want that kind of silly experience, I'll just get a small card game with less complexity, and less setup times and a shoter playtime.

One summed it up his thoughts with something like, "It's a hidden role game for heavy gamers who think they're too advanced to play a normal hidden role game anymore." Which coming from a heavy gamer really isn't a glowing recommendation.

    Not trying to be controversial myself lol, but I feel the fact some of these we're never played physically should either not be rated or get an uptick unless they we're just awful. Part of the charm and experience of a board game oftentimes is the feeling in your hands, the look of the board, components and of course gameplay matters. For example, I am sure having played Voidfall physically increases your enjoyment of the game than if you had just played the bland looking one on TTS. Anyhow, just found your channel, guess my YT algorithm was bored of positive reviewers lol. Cheers!

      I don't necessarily agree with that. Some games play better online. While some you have to play in person to get the most magic. And then, some should have never became board games. Changing a rating based on an assumption that it would be better in person is, in my opinion, disingenuous.

    Gives a punishing review to expeditions and gives it a C. Gives a better review to Apiary and it’s a C… I think the issue is how much time you spent being positive or negative on a game wasn’t proportional to the tier you gave it.
