So basically, Maria Kang is being targeted by jealous, low self esteem, and possibly lazy people who feel that they NEED excuses to be unhealthy? I don't understand how this became a sensitive subject.

I have friends who watch everything they eat and are very physically active and still can't look like that. I also have a relative who has a thyroid issue and it's really difficult for her to lose weight. But anyways, people need to learn that they shouldn't compare themselves to this lady. Everyone should tackle being healthy (if they wish to) in their own way, whether they have or don't have kids, have or don't have time, and have or don't have the money to afford a healthy lifestyle.

The mother says that her daughter would feel a need to look like Maria. I don't really see that as a bad thing. Maria is not skinny, she's muscular and obviously in great health. She obviously takes care of herself. Every sixteen year old girl should strive for that level of self care.

Your daughter doesn't have your "genetics" she just grew up eating the same fattening foods you bought and cooked for her.

    • @celticsaldirganlik
      @celticsaldirganlik 10 лет назад +6

Exactly. That actually made me really mad because her daughter learned this shit from her mom, who's telling her there's no hope because she's doomed by her genetics so might as well give up, and it's affecting her ability to look the way she wants to and be happy. If her mom knows she wants to be thinner, she should help her by getting her a gym membership and buying healthy food, not refuse to acknowledge it which will make her daughter turn to extreme methods.

Ahhhh the ever so old "its in my genetics" excuse. I remember using that excuse 4 years ago when i was in high school, did i mention i was 120 pounds overweight and on the verge of a heart attack?. However, the moment i stopped telling myself that "maybe its not in my genetics to be fat and if i stop doing what my family is doing which is gorge large portions of deep fried food every day i can lose weight too" . Here we are 4 years later 120 pounds gone and i couldnt be happier. Funny thing is every time i do meet an obese person that i try to motivate they say "thyroid, genetics or some sort of rare disease" and im like "my my aren;t i the popular one meeting all these obese people in the world that have the disease and not one of them is fat because they eat large portions of junk food and have zero workout regime" sighhhh

I love her response to the audience members "genetics" question.. If that mother only drank water, lifted small weights, walked 45 minutes 5 times a week at least etc.. She wouldn't be saying anything was genetically wrong with herself. People take offense to the way she put it, no one likes to here "what's your excuse".. It seems rude but her intentions were just to say "If I can do it, so can you"..

During my early childhood years, I was thin; the weight I was meant to be for my age range. I was active. As I reached middle school however, that was the beginning of me becoming overweight. I was raised old school, ( for which I am grateful and proud of) where if you didn't eat what was cooked for you then you didn't eat at all. In those years my mom would cook what is called 'soul food', due to that fact that her mother was from the South (North Carolina) and that was what she learned how to cook.
I knew that my childhood doctor had a few discussions with my mom about my increasing weight, because afterwards we would be riding home and she would be angry, mumbling about how the doctor had no right to tell her how to raise her children. She, as well as, all my maternal relatives would tell me that I'm just 'big-boned', that my weight meant that I was a 'healthy' child, and/or it's just how us women of color are 'built'.. excuses passed down from one generation to another. It was no wonder that most of my female relatives on my mother's side was overweight. My father, however, agreed with my doctor, and it wasn't until I was 16 yrs old, and I went to get an update on my vaccines for school, that my doctor informed me that I was at risk for high blood pressure; that I was at the time 'border-line.' That was a shock for both me and my father. So, we listened to my doctor and my nutritionist, and set up a weigh lose plan together. At 16 yrs old, I was close to 300 LBS. By the time I was 18 yrs old, I was 130 Lbs. I had lost about 120 lbs.
I am a mother of two daughters, and although I had gained some of that weight back after my girls was born, once again, I lost it. So it is my hope that whoever believes that genetics can be blamed for being overweight, that they read this and get inspired.

What I'm seeing is, a woman who is confident and speaking her values, her ideas, her opinion. Then we got the audience, as well as the media being playing double standards. You can't say you're against bashing, when you get her on the show and bash her. This is sensationalized by the media. Go to her Facebook Page, look for yourself. You will see it differently.
Her daughter is fat not because of genetics. It's because of the mother's lifestyle, the food the family eat. Genetics. We love making excuses don't we and then point finger at someone for saying truth. Children today are eating crap food, McDonalds, poison diets, and some get diabetes at age 18 years of age! On Facebook, internet, games for hours and not enough sports.
Don't fall for the sensationalisation and hype of the media so they can have another show and make more money from idiots who don't get they are used as pawns. I like how those here bashing her, are hiding behind a fake avatar.

Bethenny, Maria and people who look like her were not "blessed with" a body type like that. She works HARD to look this way. Don't try to diminish her hard work as "genetics", which is B.S. on both sides. She'd be as fat as the cows in the audience if she didn't have self control with food and didn't put in the work. It all comes down to calories in & calories out, period.

People are still under the impression that only skinny people can be healthy when that's medically not true. People CAN be healthy in any size and they can also be sick in any size. This woman talking about excuses is in a unique situation since she can work out hours of her day almost every day to maintain her skinny figure - most people don't have that luxury. I wish we could move past the "you have to be skinny to be healthy" illusion and actually look at people's health in a more holistic way. If your body is healthy, your blood levels are good and you mind is healthy then who cares if you have a little fat in your body? just being skinny doesn't protect you from every single illness there is.

The only people who get offended by MAria are those who do not got to gym or eat healthy. Maria's message was geared towards that audience to begin with. We struggle most to eat clean and push ourselves to go to the gym for those long-term goals. This strikes a nerve with people who feel insecure about their own bodies. TBH, most people don't want to put that kind of dedication into their health & they do not want to admit it.
P.S. Stop blaming genetics for everything. Your genes interact with your environment.

I love this moms message and her response.. Lets not use our bad eating habits which we have passed on to our children turning them obese as an excuse such as bad genetics. Its not bad genetics. Its a bad lifestyle and poor choices. Children can not help what their parents are feeding them and thats what we should be concerned about. If you are fat, and you have children that you dont want to go through the same stuggles you have, you better make some major lifestyle changes yourself. Break the cycle, its not something you would ever regret.

For two weeks I walked to the station to fetch the train to go to work because my car was broke. On my way, a one mile trip, I encountered other commuters coming from that station. The overweight women I encountered were always eating something. They always had something in their mouth or had snacks in their hands. I couldn't help noticing. They bought a snack from one of the many little shops at the station. It was like 7 a.m., and already they were eating candy bars!
The gist of my story is that I don't care about so called 'health problem' excuses. Only 1% of overweight people is overweight because of their health. The other 99% has bad habits, is too lazy to do serious fitness and is too weak to eat the proper way in proper quantities. Yet the world has to adapt to them. It's a jolly disgrace!

Actually being overweight does have genetic factors so she is right on some level which means it would make it much harder for the 16 year old to lose the weight (not impossible just harder) and it would also mean that she has to be constantly watching her food intake (more than what the average would). So the 'inspirational' woman on the couch should get her facts straight. And the women making the comment should just also realize her daughter if she lost the weight would make her much stronger and more in control of her body.

"Some people are overweight because of genetics, thyroid issues, this, that, and the other." If you are overweight by DEFAULT, than focus your attention somewhere else. I understand that you can be big and still be healthy.

  • @MsBrooklyn11232
    @MsBrooklyn11232 9 лет назад +4

While I do agree that genetics plays a role to an extent because there are some people that have a difficult time to lose weight in certain areas of their bodies because of their genetics, however genetics should NOT be a reason/excuse to not be healthy and fit. Genetics does not make a person 500 pounds/disgustingly and grossly obese. If these overweight/obese people go on a strict diet that contains green leafy vegetables, low carbohydrates, protein, fruits, drinks a lot if water, and exercise for 45 minutes at least 4 days a week, they will lose this weight so fast and quickly.

This is just so annoying to watch. Maria Kang did nothing wrong and it's ridiculous that this is even controversial. How many posters are there of an old woman lifting weights or a person with missing limbs holding an olympic medal all the with the caption, what's your excuse? That's a common slogan used in the fitness world. Maria never attacked anybody or said anything about their bodies and how they are not good enough. The people who say Maria's fat shaming don't feel bad when they see the old lady lifting weights because they don't feel threatened or insecure when they see that. But when Maria does it then they feel shamed. Why? Because she's fit and attractive? People need to get over themselves.

I'm sick of these people acting as if you can't change your body. You can! People who say "I'll never look like this" are just making excuses for being overweight and defending a improper nutrition

To be honest anyone can lose weight. There is no reason you can't lose weight unless you have hyperthyroidism. There is no such thing as "predispositioned to be thick". I was 165 lbs my whole teen years and got down to 100 lbs where I am now. I was the fat bitch with the "thick body". Not ONCE did I ever think I was meant to be heavy, it's not at all true. I just lost the weight and now I'm definitely skinny. There's no such thing as "predispositioned to be fat".

im gonna be honest i completely believe in being fit and healthy, my husband is a competitive weightlifter, but i can understand not having the money to either afford a personal trainer, or a gym, some people cant afford to pay someone to watch their children extra after already working 40 hours, yes you can go run and do other things but there is only so much you can do. And i will be honest i eat very well and workout 3-5 times a week and ever since going on birth control i have been stuck at the same weight. Im not over weight but it can be hard sometimes to be where you wanna be.

    • @Carissa99Xo

You are right. That stuff is expensive and it take a lot of time out of people's lives. If you have household to run and children to raise you can't be at the gym two hours a day. And also you are right about hormones making it hard to lose weight, not just birth control but stress and depression can make it very difficult if not impossible.

I agree. It's hard to watch someone come down on your lifestyle without having personal knowledge of you. I'm pretty fit, but I have about 5 hours of personal time a day to include eating, sleeping, hygiene, etc. It's just not our place to be so judgmental. Even though she modified her message, the delivery still screams 'I'M JUDGING YOU'

Imagine if Maria Kang was a man. How many men would lose their mind if he posted a picture of himself with three children with the caption "What's your excuse?" How many men would shame him for being fit? How many men would call him out for having an unrealistic body and that he is not being a good role model for kids? Almost none.

VallentinyHP True, but to some, being a father and having to take care of children is an excuse for not working out and letting themselves go which I don't think is a good excuse since you can still find the time to workout and be healthy.

Another huge factor in weight loss is to drink a lot of water. People can exercise and diet, but if you're drinking soda and high calorie/sugary drinks, it's almost like erasing your healthy habits. Plus, water is good for your skin and it cleanses the body and always keeps you hydrated.

  • @brooklynforever1990

I agree 100% Maria. I don't look a thing like her, nor will my body every be like hers. I am over weight and my mom too was over weight and she did suffer health complications due to her health. I'm overweight because I don't do the work to get in shape. End of story. Overweight tell half truths & say "I don't eat that much". I know the lies because I told them myself. I'm taking control of my health & making better decisions. People are quick with why they can't rather than why they can.

that lady who said that needs to understand that her daughter can also look like that it just takes hard work and dedication to want to put yourself in a healthy position..
naturally I have a I fast metabolism that burns carbs really fast in my body no matter what I eat but not everybody is so lucky but I still have problems I maybe thin but I feel like my body is droopy and lose if I want to get my body fit and tight I need to exercise and lift weights and give that dedication and I just don't want to...
all I have to say is if you want to look good and feel good about yourself then just do something about it and just don't whine and complain because that fixes nothing

I have done it, you dont need to workout hours and hours a day. 30-90min a day give you result and eat healthy with lots of protein and good fat like avocado. Weightloss help me to get pregnant with no drogs it does help.

Positive reinforcement or comments help, I have seen my wife starting to balloon during her 30's and saying it was normal with having kids. She really was not into physical fitness thing back in the Philippines. Fast forward ten years, in Vancouver, she has thought of joining that marathon thing. Five then ten- wow am impressed, but I had praised her early on and that helped. Now ,we would go over the photo albums and compare the pix then and Now. If not for my hip injury I might be into this marathon - exercise, or maybe someone needs to convince me.

That butthurt look on the face of complainant #1. She wasn't asking for her daughter, she was asking for herself. Does she even have a daughter? Who knows, could just be an excuse for how she looks.
    >Some people do have metabolism issues
    >low thyroid [genetic]
There were fewer obese people in the past than there are people claiming to have thyroid issues today, and such genes if expressed regardless of lifestyle would not generally be sexually selected for, so the epidemic is not one of such gene frequency. Ergo non-genetic factors must be able to at least trigger a predisposure, and can at best be the dominant factor.
    >People can't hear you because of the way you said it
She can't change their minds. They don't want their minds changed. It's just like junkie logic, they need to have many really, really hard years behind them before they're determined enough to change. (but by that time it's really damned hard.)

I agree with Maria Kang that the excuses have to stop but so do the stigmas and the judgment. Almost everyone is capable of being a healthy weight. Not everyone is going to be a healthy hot skinny mini. This is the difference that we need our young people especially to understand. Everyone wants to look nice and it might seem easier for some than others but don't do it for them and don't do it for the hot mom on Facebook whose preaching is wavering on shaming... Do it for YOUR health! As for judging those we see who are big or don't look healthy, it hits home because I was very sick several years ago after being bitten by a poisonous tick. The inflammation this produced in my body caused me to quickly put on over 60 pounds. I'm sure I did not look like I was taking care of myself and was even body shamed by a doctor who didn't know my full diagnosis. I did have an excuse but I didn't ask for it! You never know what someone is going through. I'm much better now and that extra weight is gone. Be mindful, be healthy and do it because you're worth it

Shit like this is why I started working out, I'm just an average looking
guy and I feel like a fucking superhuman when I walk my dog or
whatever. It's disgusting and depressing how fucked people look
nowadays. I'm 6'1" and 145 lbs and still instinctively consider my body
type "average" even though it's anything but nowadays. I hate that I
feel nothing but disgust and contempt for the people who should be my
    brothers.
