- My first attempt flying the Cabri G2 helicopter in Microsoft Flight Simulator. This helicopter is a free part of the 40th anniversary update to Flight Simulator, and has been developed in direct collaboration with Cabri. It's great fun.

Another fantastic video Jonathan! Regarding your rotor comment. By default a new settings is enabled to assist. You can turn it off and it certainly will be more tasking to manage.
Yes - I thought as much. I'll do a video illustrating what it does soon.
@@jonbeckett Yes, it is 10x more fun when you do this step, I was soooo looking forward to helicopters and was very disappointed with the physics, then someone told me about the assists on by default, turned them off and now the Cabri is my fave of all the aircrafts (Even my payware ones) too much fun!
Never been too keen on helicopters IRL but will give it a whirl, so to speak…
I see what you did there :)
That was cool: new subscriber I am now.
Cheers :)
Assists (x2) are indeed on by default. Turn them off and life gets much more 'interesting'. 😀
Yes - discovered the assists :)
Thank you for th einformative video. In case anyone with problems starting it needs to hear this:
I wasn't able to start the heli because (I'm not a native) when the checklist says "Throttle: Idle" it does NOT mean to put it to 0% lol. I think it means that you should make sure there aren't any changes going on (like it's decreasing or increasing) before proceeding to the next point.
No - throttle idle means what it says - throttle to the idle position.
5:01 I suspect you had the two helicopter related "Piloting assistance" features turned on. If you turn them off, you'll definitely find you have to compensate with the pedals. I just tried this out for the first time yesterday and it was very VERY tricky at first until I got used to it.
Yes - lots and lots of others commented with exactly the same thing :)
I've seen mention of some assists in the setting you can disable. Maybe these will result in the more realistic hard-core feel your after?
I know they have assist for tail rotar and something else I believe
That would make sense. To be honest, unless you have pedals and a proper cyclic and collective lever, you would struggle with a realistic representation anyway.
@@jonbeckett yeah, i didn't think myself that most setups wouldn't have what is necessarily required for helicopter flight.
Thankfully they have help. Possibly a integration for console (Xbox) as it would be impossible for me on controller or the simple Hotas I mostly use
@@jonbeckett well, I got to fly helicopters im DCS pretty decently with just a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro.
I'd love to see a video n the Bell 407. I've only had a quick look at it so far but when I started it, it made grinding noises soon after!
I think those are normal lol
When I get a chance, I'll record a startup video with it.
Thanks for another great video. I have learned alot from you since I started flying 2 months ago. I have a velocity one for airplanes. I am using a Logitech extreme 3D pro for the helicopter. Is that a good joystick to use.
Thankyou for the feedback! :)
If you want to see plenty of the Cabri G2 in a training capacity, check out the RUclips channel 'Pilot Yellow'. They are a flight school in Canada that uses the G2 extensively and their videos show all aspects of learning to fly heli's using the G2.
Great information - thank you!
Turn off assistance for tail rotor cyclic, and collective to get a realistic experience. Thanks for sharing this.
Yes - I discovered them too. It transforms it :)
In your starup you turned on the governor, the light is off if the governor is on. That is why the engine went full throttle directly. Moving the throttle with the governor acitvated wont make a difference since the governor controls the throttle.
I just followed the checklist :)
I'm surprised by the number of RUclipsrs caught out by the assists being on by default. I knew about those before the release. I don't remember how, but I don't religiously follow MSFS news.
Yep - I think the lack of documentation is one of the major fails in MSFS.
Looks like you will need to work on the YAW string! Wait until your in the gliders with the long, long wings 😬😊😊
Heh - at the moment it's just a case of trying to hang onto the helicopter by any which way. I imagine with proper helicopter controls, it becomes a LOT easier.
@@jonbeckett it’s ok, I’ve only ever flown model helicopters and flow model gliders for more than 50 years, competitively as well. Full size I was a glider pilot at instructor. Your have fun with the gliders, especially now VFR and the thermal models are so good. Good luck👍
Hello Jonathan, I assigned throttle and collective on seperate controller. Collective works fine, but Throttle doesn't work. Tried with "Set helicopter throttle, throttle 1 and throttle 2" all of them do not work... can you please tell me how you set it up?
I just configured the two levers on my controller as described.
My helicopter is extremely sensitive when rotate left and right any idea why i try all the settings still hard to control I’m using rotas one
Helicopters are hard to control, end of story :) I'm guessing you still have the assistance on too (I had it on, unwittingly, in the video).
I've only tested "407" so far, but I assume you've disabled the new automatic "facilitators" for helicopters in the options?
Not yet - just taking them "as installed". I'm going to go remove all the assistance for a later video.
@@jonbeckett I get it, it makes sense. By the way - iniBuilds has added modest manuals to its models, too bad Asobo doesn't do the same.
Does G2 have VOR? How to set up VOR navigation?
No idea :)
The real Capri counters clockwise rotor rotation by right tail rotor pedal. The engine is a lycoming.
Yep. I think that's probably what I mentioned - I didn't realise in that first flight that the helicopters in MSFS have assistance enabled by default.
Are you running FS Realistic ? Pretty sure that clattering you're getting is entirely down to FSR not blade slap or VRS. Overkill had the same problem. Head tracking (or VR) for the win !
I think to fly the helis on realistic mode will require pedals, and a proper cyclic and collective controller.
Definitely pedals, and a head tracker helps enormously, but I just flew it quite acceptably with only pedals, joystick and throttle quadrant - the throttle assigned itself to the collective and the pitch lever controlled the throttle. I did set up a separate heli profile for the quadrant but changed out of it to check something and forgot to check back so that was just with my normal single engine profile. I definitely couldn't let go of the joystick or take my feet off of the pedals but the collective and throttle didn't need touching unless I wanted to change my attitude (climb, descend, flare etc) and I could do gentle climbs and descents by changing the heli pitch with the joystick (cyclic). Took this on my normal test flight from NZWT to NZAR and it was quicker than Ant's tiger moth but not much quicker, would have been quite relaxing if I hadn't been holding the joystick hard forwards because I couldn't find any cyclic trim LOL
Well I say I flew it acceptably, what I mean is that I had an acceptable degree of control. For the actual flying, the takeoff was an unexpected adventure and the landing should have put the heli in the workshop for inspection but the sim recorded it as a landing so all good :)
Hey, what joystick do you use?
Airbus stick.
OH MY BACK!😉
Hahaha
There's 2 helicopter specific assists that you need to turn off. They are on by default.
Yes - discovered them too.
What are they?
@@HatsuneM1ku01 assisted tail rotor and assisted cyclic. located under the piloting assistance options.
@@mariohnyc I actually figured it out. I was pressing the opposite trigger and causing it to rotate worse instead of balancing it lol
@@HatsuneM1ku01 ha, glad u figured it out ! it's gonna be tough flying the heli's without rudder pedals, gonna take some good hand dexterity to pull it off
There’s 2 assists in the menu, turn them off and it’s more realistic, hard as nails.
Yes - I discovered that too. I thought something was off :)
@@jonbeckett on Series X and getting pretty good with helicopters using controller after hours of Zen like practising. Nailed landing in small spaces and now feel like a bloody Jedi.
you from high wycombe?
From nearby :)
The sound is completely off in this game, Rotor should have been more pronounced and independent in the sound engine. it's poorly mixed with the engine RPM when you raise your collective. IRL you can hear it slapping and spinning as you maneuver the aircraft.
DCS is a good example of how it should sound like inside the cockpit.
The heli in DCS costs more than Flight Simulator. This heli is free :)
@@jonbeckett Point taken. still it's a simulator, it is worth pointing out :)
…and it’s a different aircraft. Fully articulated systems aren’t as noisy as teetering systems :) there is also an option for headset sim in MSFS that I believe reduces cabin noise. I’ll check later. Great videos!
I was concerned for my safety just watching this video.
Hah - so was I :)
wycombe air parkkkkk
Can't fly it, it's totally bugging.
If I pull up it goes crazy
Welcome to the world of helicopters. There is no bug - that's just how helicopters are.
@@jonbeckett no it was a bug I started it again. All was fine then
TURN OFF ASSTIANCE
Did you actually look at ANY of the other comments? :)
