  • Recording my experience of using the ILS, and landing the Airbus A310 in Microsoft Flight Simulator. There's lots to learn - I landed too slow (not used to the spool-up time of the engines), and the autopilot didn't capture, but instructive in all sorts off ways - in terms of turning off autopilot alarms, the perils of using pre-loaded states from the tablet, and more.
    I think it's important to show that everybody has to learn these things - the next time I will take on board the lessons from this landing, and it will be much smoother.
    Not looking forward to reading the flight manual though...

    Hello Jonathan. The AP Disconnect (Red button) works correctly. One click to disconnect, second to clear warning. You shouldn't disconnect the AP from the FCU if you can help it. By the way, I'm new to your channel. Really enjoying your content.

      Yep - everything about this aircraft is a learning curve. I've decided it's good to show people that I don't always get things right :) I see far too many channels where you see cuts in the videos, and everything looks perfect :)

    Nice vid. Subscribed. 🙂
    I had a few trial and error ... er ... 'learning' moments with this plane. It can be a helluva learning curve. So, just sharing a couple notes for what it's worth...
    1) The A310 FCU button PUSH doesn't work the way your describe in the vid. Not like the newer buses SET/Manage... For A310, Pull is set/activate. Push does different things... Push on speed will allow you to PRE set speed bug without activating. Push on HDG will just set the heading bug to current heading without activating (useful in NAV mode or on runway ready for take off to preset HDG bug without turning it forever and ever on a busy approach), push on ALT toggles 100/1000 ...
    2) ILS procedure - tune ILS + CRS, set MDA in APP page, then activate Final APP at least 5 to 10NM before LOC, then select NAV, and ensure PROFILE is set on (I usually set ALT for FAP point ALT as per ILS chart). It will capture LOC and then capture GS and should descend automatically if all set up correctly. Once captured and descending you can set Go-Around ALT as normal, plane will continue GS descent.
    For std CAT2 only one AP needed. BUT ILS must be selected on both Captain and FO PFD. (If you fly the Fenix, you will know you get warnings if FD and LS is not set on both PFD's... Seems A310 does not have those warnings... )
    Profile Speed on AT is similar to the modern bus, and plane *should* keep to greendot as you step down flaps as soon as Final APP is active. However I prefer setting speed myself, and prefer at fastest to be at 210kn 5NM before LOC. I step 210 - S15F0 / 180 - S15F15, then gear, then set Vapp (calculated on MCDU Approach page for you), and as it decels, remaining flaps to full. I like being fully configured and stable by 5 DME, unless chart specifies higher.

    I might've missed you saying it, I'm fairly certain the AP didn't properly capture the G/S because you were in ALT.HLD Mode - the Plane needs to be in PROFILE mode for G/S capture

  • @ddenisen
    @ddenisen Год назад +1

    A lot of flight guidance systems won't capture the glideslope (engage G/S mode when armed) unless you're already tracking the localizer (LOC mode active). I believe it's also a carrier option on some aircraft. That's likely what happened in your case.
    Also it's cool to see that the sim models buffeting when you are flying near stall speed

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Год назад +1

      Yes - I should have flown in from further away to adequately describe how things behave. I'll return to it again soon and do a better demonstration. Half the problem is talking about something while travelling at 180 knots eats up a lot of approach distance :)

      Can i ask a question though. Is there any other way to get approach frequencies besides Navigraph? I use Simbrief but im a bit hesitant to spend so much money if there is a cheaper option that can work.

    so the course is just the magnetic heading of your arrival runway?

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  10 месяцев назад

      Yep - the big jets tend to use GPS en-route, then switch to landing systems for arrival - which uses radio, and course. The Airbuses get it pre-configured if you have programmed the flight-plan.

    Did your aircraft get a terrible pitch upwards when you're coming into land? Everytime I go to land with this aircraft it seems to wanna flare itself like at 50 feet above ground. And to compensate I have to cut thrust way too early. How can I stop this if at all. This usually happens when I fly ILS approaches.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Год назад

      Never had it happen. It must be something you're doing (or not doing). In the 310 there is a setting on the front panel for the decision height - probably that. If you read the documentation that comes with it, you'll find the approach checklist which will cover it.
