  • A first flight in the de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver in Microsoft Flight Simulator. The Beaver is part of the 40th anniversary update, originally developed by Blackbird Simulations (formerly Milviz). It's a wonderful addition to the simulator - essentially a "study level" STOL aircraft.

Spent a little while today jumping between this, the DC-3, the Cabri, the Bell, one of the gliders and back through them all... Beaver and DC-3 are stunning in particular! Opened the door of the Beaver on startup and could not shut. Once I revved up the engine, the prop wash blew it shut! All fantastic! Nice review!

These service our local area here on Vancouver Island as an alternative for the ferry to the mainland, and I've been waiting for the beaver with floats for a long time now. Do wish Asobo had invested some more time and effort in making water physics when a plane's floating in it/using it as runway more realistic. Still, very happy this finally landed, pun intended.

I managed a RNAV approach and it worked using the GTN 750 from the pulldown menu. I thought it wasn't going to work but at the last moment, the glidepath showed up and it locked in. But after a successful landing, I forgot about tail draggers and I tipped the plane over using the brakes. I needed to pull back on the yoke. Very impressive plane for freeware.

You would never leave the engine at 100%. It's a bit like driving a car - say you're driving along in 2nd gear - do you change up to reach 30mph, and rev the crap out of the engine in 2nd? It's about protecting the engine.

@@PSPbrtag Think of it like a transmission in a car. Full forward is first gear - good for climbing up hills but when you get to the top you want to shift to a higher gear so pull the prop lever back. The difference is that it will maintain the RPM you set it at. Moving the throttle does not change the RPM but it will cause you to either climb, descend, increase or decrease speed depending on what you do with the elevator because it is actually changing the pitch of the propeller blades to stay at the same RPM despite you having added or subtracted power with the throttle. It's all about efficiency.
