It's one of those plays that happens all game similar to the OL but when the refs need ti interject themselves it's literally easy to do this just look at the Chiefs games. If the Chiefs have to come back and it's failing ironic how the other team always manages to be holding on a last ditch effort. As a neutral football fan it's frustrating seeing those kinds of calls because they change outcomes. The demoralizing affect alone usually always results in that team scoring
@@cw3982 I was looking for the flag, who threw it and WHEN was it thrown? After the sack? or at the time of the hold? Replays make it hard to see that. I agree on non calls sometimes even out in the long run.
BYU at Utah - There were a lot of problems with the officiating. both ways. Joel, you looked at the stats...that's not the right way to look at the officiating. You would need to review the film and all the other plays of the game to see if that kind of contact was allowed or not allowed. you can't look at just one play and say that the calls were inconsistent. The consistent thing with that game is that a LOT of the calls were ticky tack the whole game. Sure looks like the first read of the play was to the receiver that was held. It also looks like the offical didn't hesitate to make the call. Officiating is always difficult. reviewable vs not reviewable. changing rules depending on the situation etc... Human officials cannot always get it right. If it's "50/50", then it's a flip of a coin. this time, it came up heads and BYU got the call. BYU still had to drive the length of the field to get the field goal.
I'd be willing to bet you can go back and pick out contact like that on 10 plays from either defense. You might like the refs calling the game ticky tacky on the outside. The points that they didn't. BYU's having a great season. Enjoy that. But honest fans will admit they got bailed out.
@@curbsidemusic I'd be willing to bet that's false. The cornerback GRABBED THE RECEIVER'S JERSEY to keep him from breaking to the sideline. The referee is looking right at that and immediately throws the flag. You just go ahead and show me and everyone else how that exact thing happened right in front of the official who then did not throw the flag. Go ahead, I'm waiting. Or else just send me your 50 bucks or whatever you're "willing to bet." Thanks.
And furthermore everyone who is complaining forgets that Utah failed to stop them after the holding call so they are more to blame than the ref making a subjective call ‘at that point in the game’. It’s on them.
No, it's not. It is disappointingly poor, in fact. A hold is a hold and this was very evidently holding. Not tacky because the hold prevented the receiver from separating from the cornerback just when the QB was looking for him to open up. The fact that there had been no defensive holding calls to that point in the game (this is the "data" claimed by Klatt, who really should know better) has nothing at all to do with it. The official was right there, saw the hold, and threw the flag, exactly as he was supposed to do. It's called fairness.
Appreciate the point on consistency with the Utah holding call -- fully agree with Joel on this. That being said, as an objective viewer, that should be defensive holding. It's unfortunate that officials aren't consistent, that's the human error, but the call was still correct.
I think you’re missing Joel’s point which is that if that is a hold it has to be called all game or else a DB will expect that the refs rules that as fair game.
@@MitchKirkham I literally acknowledged that in my comment. I get that point and I do agree. I'm just saying from my unbiased POV, that it's a holding call.
Holding call against Utah led to BYU's final three points. Earlier in the game, a phantom face mask call against BYU led to a Utah touchdown. Utah's defensive line should have been called multiple times for mimicking the offenses silent snap signal, to cause false starts. Also, two plays before the infamous holding call, number 58 from Utah grabbed BYU's quarterback's face mask for a split second, causing his head to turn back. Wasn't called. I could see why though. Also in the fourth quarter, a roughing the passer against Utah wasn't called. So... 🤷♂️.

I’m literally laughing. 😂 You’re glad “he got serious about coaching,” which he’s been doing for several years and succeeding at. Joel, the other point for the Utah byu controversy is the whole aspect of working the refs. Sitake was D coordinator under whittingham for years, he knows how handsy the Utah secondary is coached to be. The whole game he’s working the refs and telling them how much they’re missing and so when the defender grabs and redirects the receiver RIGHT IN FRONT OF the ref on a big play of course they’re going to throw it. Just another point as to why it might have been just called then and not earlier
Also there’s an angle looking at the receiver and the qb’s eyes and retzlaff was looking right at that receiver before he got sacked, it definitely altered the play too
Absolutely spot on with the Utah-BYU call. I use that exact same argument for basketball. I’m a basketball coach and a played basketball my whole life. Obviously reffing basketball is very hard and I applaud the officials. But at the start of every game, I basically tell the refs what you said about consistency and establishing calls early. When I was arguing with BYU fans about the game, (I’m a Utah fan) this was the exact same thing that I was saying. No consistency and threw a flag when you should’ve let the players decide.
I totally get that…but if the roles were reversed and BYU ran an unflagged illegal pick play, or the BYU o-line was holding…and that hold prevented the sack…and BYU manages to make a big play but the flags didn’t come out, would you be saying they made the right call by letting “the players decide”? The fact is a no call is a call, and it benefits the player/team who broke the rules and punishes the player/team who didn’t. A no call on a hypothetical BYU hold would benefit the team that illegally held preventing a sack, just like a no call on the Utah DB who held cause he got beat on the double move would benefit the player who illegally held.
Joel, I appreciate your analysis and commentary. I find it curious that so many college football pundits have given so little attention to the Number 1 ranked Oregon. This weekly review completely ignores them. This is a continuation of a pattern. You and others have given the Ducks a lot of praise, but it's just that the overall attention is so limited. Will something further be coming?
It’s because they’re in the Pacific Northwest and the Big has only 3 real teams, the rest are terrible. Great team but no one wants to discuss them beating UCLA, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Maryland, and Washington - all bad teams. Also, the play in the Big is so BORING (except for Oregon). When CFB starts, Oregon will get all the pub.

Travis Hunter is legit but there are other who could have probably done the same. Teams that have more depth don’t require someone to play both ways. Colorado has to have him.
Funny you say that. He's much easier to replace than Shedeur, even though he's the better player. CU has amazing depth at WR. Like... *amazing* depth. We have one of, if not the best, group of receivers in the country. And when Travis was injured, his replacement (Hood) turned out to be a complete stud at DB. We have nobody who can fill Shedeur's shoes in the case of an injury.
Please Address the Fact Travis is like 70th in int per game and 17th in receiving yards. Why is that special? Should jeanty go and play linebacker and be 70th in tackles? he could do that very easily.
Mr. Klatt. As a Buckeye fan, let it be known that you and Gus and Jenny are by FAR the best trio in college football broadcasts. With that being said, this is the major issue. Some individuals have made comments about how poor the stadium atmosphere is at Ohio State. And how Oregon's was so much better, with a light show and the students in the stands at kickoff, etc. Well, all that is much easier done during a night game... Ohion State had to play a night game in Eugene, and yet every one of pir major home games is on at noon. Can't have a "light show" in the middle of the day. Students are still either getting up from partying the night before or still out drinking and tailgating at noon. Either way, our issue is not with you at all, but we would like to show the haters what Ohio State at night could look like. At least give us that.
Bruh none of these analysts were effin with Coach Prime not too long ago (Not talking about Klatt). Now not only do they eff with him but now they want him to leave what he has built and try to save these other programs. Respectfully, kick rocks!
Deon has had EVERY ADVANTAGE....2 sons that play he's a famous athlete which helps for recruiting....once his son's leave he's cooked he's NOT building anything
The Utah AD was absolutely correct, but let me promise you this - that BYU team would be absolute dead last in the ACC so the auto-bid thing is a joke - if you need auto-bids to get in then you don't belong
EXACTLY. If you commit holding, you have to be prepared to be called on it regardless of how inconsistent the refs have been. If anything, inconsistent reffing should give even more reason to be on your toes and not give them penalties to call in the first place.
For the BYU Utah game the unfortunate part was the video that the stadium had versus what ESPN had was completely different. ESPN had a far away view of it where the stadium had a close-up view of what happened and the receiver got past his 5 yards and the defensive player grabbed him by the waist, trying to redirect him pulling on him for another at least 7 yards so he’s at least 12 to 15 yards down the field trying to get free and the DB holding onto him for dear life, that was the problem 99% of the people haven’t seen you have to look for it to be able to see the actual contact and if they wouldn’t have called that that would’ve been even worse, the mistake that happened as the quarterback wanted to throw it to him and he should’ve just threw it instead of taking the sack because they would’ve called pass interference for sure and the cameras would’ve seen it a lot better because it would’ve zoomed in when it was happening
part of the controversy on the call is that he didn't throw it and probably couldn't have because the pressure got there too quickly (again). if there wasn't holding on the play...it wasn't going to go well for BYU. I've seen all the angles, and Klatt got it correct, it just wasn't the way the game was being called. The db jammed him legally inside five yards, and the receiver made a move outside, and the db just doesn't let go immediately. The rest of the play 12 to 15 yards downfield is irrelevant because the QB was hit 2 seconds after the snap (yes really). It was a very weak bailout call.
I hear you, but the reality is that the SEC teams already have the strongest strength of schedule playing only 8 times against each other. Further, we can already see how they’re canabilizing each other, which would only get worse if they had to play 9. Maybe if the other conferences improved their depth or the SEC loses the ability to out recruit other conferences they would have to change, but until then, it’s not going to change.
My issue with the consistency argument for the holding call is we’re considering one factor (the presence of a hold). To truly measure consistency you also have to consider how bad the hold was, whether it was obvious, proximity to a ref, etc. In this case, the BYU wr stumbled (making it more noticeable). So if we want to cite consistency, we have to claim that for every other holding which wasn’t called, a WR stumbled (and other variable were consistent). Otherwise we’re omitting important variables. But, I’m a BYU fan so take that how you will. Love the show though.
Honestly would love to see him go up against Jeremiah Smith or Ryan Williams. Just don't know if he's a goat or just a great player because he hasn't faced anyone that's going to run him 23 mph 50 times down the field. With that being said, I don't think he deserves the Heisman but I think he definitely deserves his own award. He is uniquely gifted.
The Miami analogy is hilarious!! Love the insight! The late game Hunter stat padding isn’t anything new for the Buffs. That’s kinda how they have been calling or audibling late in games all season, taking shots late instead of running out the clock. I am pretty sure Shadeur has even said that he wanted to make sure all his friends got a big play. Jeanty losing 3 of the starting OL from the first half of he season has made a big difference! He’s still putting up big numbers but too many times he is having to break tackles in the backfield just to get to the LOS. Haven’t seen his typical big breakout runs like we did early on with the starting OL…came close this week but not quite there
I think your logic is flawed. You didn't look at the play or show the play where BYU was called for the defensive holding in the earlier in the game. Also the only defensive holding call was at the beginning of the game against BYU. Up until Utah's holding in the last moments of the 4th. That seems very consistent. A defensive holding call for each team. In addition both teams had 10 penalties apiece. That also seems very consistent. Further what about the devastating face mask call earlier in the game which was not a face mask! When the ESPN commentator sees that it is clearly a hold from where he's located and he didn't even hesitate and said it was a fantastic call I think that's pretty good authority.
Definitely consistency is missing in officiating college football games and needs to be corrected with better training. If not corrected the officials need to be suspended or replaced.
Here’s the problem with that argument about the hold: A new angle just dropped where you can see both a clear hold and the QBs eyes at the moment of the hold. The receiver had 1 on 1 to the outside and the QB was looking at him and that’s the exact angle the ref was looking from. It doesn’t matter what’s been called the rest of the game if a ref sees a receiver get pulled off balance by his jersey as the QB is staring him down in 1 on 1 coverage that has to be called. I get comparing it to the rest of the game but that doesn’t justify a pretty clear hold restricting the designed route for the play that could have resulted in a first down right in front of the official.
Joel, love the show. I know this isnt in your control but very dissipointed Ohio State Indiana game is at noon. Joel you are the best in all of college football, I can't wit to hear you do the Utah Colorado game this Saturday! Go Buffs.
Joel, as a BYU fan your assessment is the best I’ve heard as an outsider looking at that hold. Yes a hold but the call was inconsistent. Officials are a part of the game. Utah still had opportunity to stop BYU as they drove down the field afterwards.
Ok but ur mormon

Utah fan here. The Utes did not lose this game based on the refs. You don’t deserve to win a game with zero points in the second half and less than 80 total yards.
Great show. I love the personality 😂
Joel makes the correct argument on the "holding" call in the BYU-Utah game. Inconsistent and strange timing to be ticky tack.
@@LonghornsLegend Agreed. I think all the pros, NFL, NBA, MLB are fixed, rigged, staged. Many players and books prove that.
didn’t look that ticky tack to me. besides, it’s karma for the fake face mask call against byu in the first half
Klatt mentions South Carolina. I’m happy
Joel, I agree on the Utah holding analysis. Utah DBs should’ve been called for it more all game!
BYU v Utah commentary is absolutely right
And furthermore everyone who is complaining forgets that Utah failed to stop them after the holding call so they are more to blame than the ref making a subjective call ‘at that point in the game’.
Joel that was the right call buddy, the guy was stumbling 10 yards out.
I've been waiting for this
Appreciate the point on consistency with the Utah holding call -- fully agree with Joel on this.
😅😅😅😅
@@MitchKirkham They expect that if they've gotten away with cheating all game, that they'll never get caught.

So... 🤷♂️.

Really awesome how far they've come this year so far.
serious about coaching he been serious where you been
I’m literally laughing. 😂 You’re glad “he got serious about coaching,” which he’s been doing for several years and succeeding at. It takes time to build a team just like it takes time to build a house. Last year was about laying a foundation and establishing a culture. This year is about building on that foundation. He’s light years ahead of the previous CU coach who went 1-11 two years ago and lost by double digits each game. I have no idea what his name is because Deion Sanders made CU relevant again and bowl-eligible before his second November. Give the man his flowers. 💐
Well, unlike my fellow Buffs fans here, I agree, and thank you. The coaching last year was pretty lacking. Clock management was a joke, half time adjustments were disastrous, tackling was atrocious. He brought in better position coaches, better play callers, and he really reigned in his most impulsive instincts, like always going for it on 4th down. He improved as a coach significantly this year, and the coaches around him are better as well.

Joel we knw you have to be neutral...but its time to turn the thermostat up on Colorado..lil more
Joel, I appreciate your analysis and commentary.

Inconsistent call or not... if you don't hold you won't get called for it
BYU v Utah: the refs had also made a poor call that led to an Utah touchdown earlier in the game.
@stanhawkes3569 refs will always choose player safety. That would have been called 90 percent of the time.
Im a huge dawgs fan and i think you’ve been unfair to is in past. But you are spot on. I dont see us making it to playoffs
Make the SEC teams play 9 conference games!
Make B1G teams play more than 2 ranked games a season !
All conference teams should only play conference opponents. Independents can join a conference if they don't like it.
Utah's d-line was periodically mimicking the snap signal all game.
Ole Miss is absolutely capable of winning it all this year
Definitely consistency is missing in officiating college football games and needs to be corrected with better training. If not corrected the officials
need to be suspended or replaced.
Here’s the problem with that argument about the hold:
A new angle just dropped where you can see both a clear hold and the QBs eyes at the moment of the hold.
Ya Colorado is good this year, the problem is they were hyped up last year and were not. But they are for real this year.
