Yo Joel! Big fan! I’m a Naval aviation search and rescue crewman. All aircraft must be under a certain gross weight for their landing gear so, burning fuel is the safest way to ensure your landing gear doesn’t collapse. I’ve seen jets dump fuel in emergencies to get back on deck of air craft carriers. Your pilots did a fine job during an in flight emergency and I’m happy you guys are safe. Any landing you can walk away from is a success. Have a great day man!
Why would the landing gear be at a greater risk of collapsing in a case where they didn't retract after takeoff? Is it because of the tires' exposure to high wind or something?
@@-Hesco I don't think you understand my point. When the plane took off, it had a certain amount of fuel. The landing gear were supposed to retract. Assume the landing gear had retracted. In that case, the pilot presumably would not have flown circles and would have just landed. Why was there a greater need to burn fuel simply because the landing gear didn't retract after takeoff?

As a commercial aircraft mechanic for 37 years I believe I’m qualified to answer the overweight landing issue. Many of today’s large capacity aircraft carry all or the majority of their fuel in the wings and center of the structure. Most can carry the equivalent of the aircraft’s dry/empty weight in fuel load. All aircraft have a maximum weight limit for flight and landing. We’ve all seen wing flex when looking out a window. I’ve done plenty of inspections due to unusual conditions such as overweight landings. Some but not all aircraft can dump fuel overboard while flying. Most aviators use this as a last resort because of environmental concerns. Your crew handled it well. Apparently there were no emergency concerns they just had to get below the maximum fuel load for landing.
Why did they have to burn fuel simply because the landing gear didn't retract? They knew how long they had to fly before the flight and presumably knew how much fuel they would burn. Joel suggested that the flight was as long; I don't think they flew less. Did they fly slower because the landing gear were down? Did flying w/ the landing gear down make it more likely that the landing gear would fail upon landing?

It’s more safety Joel because if you land overweight your brakes aren’t going to slow you down before the end of the runway. Or they might get too hot and be a safety hazard. If they desperately had to land they would but if nothing else is emergently happening then that’s standard procedure
Josh Pate mentioned your landing issue on his show...good friend! Two of the classiest men in the CFB industry. Glad you're safe! Love and blessings to you and yours Joel 🙏
In 2014, Ohio State lost their starting QB (Braxton Miller) in training camp. They lost to VT in week 2, then on to win the B1G, and beat Bama & Oregon to win the title as the 4 seed, in the first college football playoff. If that can happen a decade ago under the old format, 1-loss in a 12 team format is going to become the norm. Conference realignment turned the B1G and SEC into a gauntlet.
The landing weight for the landing gear was a good straight by the pilot. If there was a landing gear issue, that means there could be a hydraulic which means you want to take out as many variables as possible in order to make a safe landing. The less weight on the plane means the less pressure on that hydraulic landing gear which means less of a possibility of the gear bottoming out and causing a skid, or worse a crash.
Michigan has a lot of issues . A LOT. But the most unforgivable is fhe defensive coordinator . His schemin and play calling is literally atrocious. I can’t fathom why sherrone Moore, who should absolutely know better , has not sat down with wink and swatted him with a newspaper . This dog must learn new tricks or go back to the pound . There is literally jv teams that play more disciplined and schematically sound ball . Go blue 🤷♂️
Kirk Campbell is equally egregious. Both better be gone before next season. You live and learn, but hey, Jim Harbaugh sold out on Don Brown at one point in time.
Vandy outplayed and outcoached Bama. As a Sooner, our schedule is looking more optimistic just in one day. Rankings should shift massively early season bc they are based on nothing.
Hey Joel, first, love your show! Air Force Pilot here, and yes, maximum recommended landing weight is a thing. Most large aircraft when fully fueled are too heavy to land after takeoff otherwise it could cause damage to the landing gear and airframe, so they wouldn't land right away unless there was some other issue more serious such as somebody in immediate need of medical attention or an engine fire. Hope that helps! Go Blue and Go Buffs!
Nd loses to niu. Community bashes us. But what abt vandy? What bout Arkansas, what about Minnesota? This is one of the worst losses in the sports history. And you drop them to 7??? And we get dropped to 16.
I hated losing Kalen DeBoer as a Washington fan but It was a BREATH of fresh air to get rid of the Defensive staff. Washington has less talent/experience on Defense this year but they still play more consistently. KD is going to have to make some coaching changes on that side of the ball.
Bama has a different defensive staff than Deboer at Washington. The issue I think was more complacency and youth on D. Wommack isn't a bad D coordinator and has had great defenses at both South Alabama and Indiana, just needs time to develop players.
And if Oregon wins, they should be 1. After seeing michigan and Washington beat up Texas and alabama last year I think the big tens earned some credit and should probably be favored until the facts tell us otherwise.
Nico should have started last year over milton, he looked like a deer in front of headlights. Our oline isn’t as good as it needs to be and playcalling is too conservative. Let nico play some ball, the talent is there! That play where he rolled to his left was immaculate! We gotta let him make some more mistakes this year to take the next step next season.
@@GoatedAtNFS i didnt overhype anything, he only played one game last season. I was very concerned with their offense and oline all year, and lack of wanting Nico to get some more snaps cuz seniority of joe milton
You said Jalen milroe was a heisman candidate…..he sucks……yes his stats are good on paper, but if you’d actually watch the game with unbiased eyes you’d see that he’s basically a repackaged black sims…..he can’t read a defense, he panics in the pocket, and he doesn’t know how to go through read progressions, if it wasn’t for number 2, this team would be unwatchable……but he sure can run…….you really get to see just how good a coach Nick saban was now
Wife is a flight attendant and she echoed what bigtimber said. Basically no reason to risk a landing overweight (which is a risk), and you stay around the departing airport in case of an emergency. Plus if there are mechanical issues you don’t want to just try to continue the flight in case there are more. Love the show!
Respect Joel, but very weary of the Will Howard hate. He is a great kid, now devoted to OSU. The fan base needs to appreciate him! He is an excellent QB.
So, when the buckeyes lose and if they lose a game, are they going to get the same treatment as, bama and Georgia, and only drop one or spots??? I hope so, because look at how bama fell few spots to an un ranked opponent. If the buckeyes lose to a duck, and a top 5 ranked duck, they’d better only fall 2-3 spots
Yes planes need to be a certain weight or they will not be able to stop in time on the runway. They still have enough fuel for the landing and a go around after burning it. In cases of an emergency after takeoff when they are fully loaded they can straight up dump fuel out the plane onto the ground.
I’m a jet engine mechanic on the kc-135for the military, which is a Boeing 707 airframe, and the main concern is not a big explosion. The primary concern is landing gear failure because the aircraft is so heavy. When the aircraft is that heavy, the nose landing gear could collapse if the pilots don’t land perfectly because that gear isn’t made to take a bunch of weight. By far the easiest way to solve this is to just fly around and burn all of that extra weight. The other thing, and this is more of a guess, is that the extra weight in the wings, because that’s were most fuel tanks are stored in heavy aircraft, could cause structural failure if a hard landing occurred. That’s more speculation though as I have no experience with the structural integrity of an aircraft
While I can see why you navigate sports politics the way you do….. your comment on Michigan looking different than the last 3 years….. well… we all know why that is.
Aircraft’s have to be under a certain weight to land. Take off weight and landing weight is usually always offset due to the amount of fuel onboard. That’s why in emergencies, pilots are sometimes required to burn excess fuel or, in extreme situations, dump fuel to be under the landing weight. If they land over that weight, they run the risk of destroying the landing gear and crashing. It sounds like you had some good cautious pilots that were concerned about the integrity of the landing gear. They did the right thing. I’m glad you’re safe. Great episode Joel.
How did michigan "cheat" against Penn state on the road, Maryland on the road, Ohio state, Iowa in the big ten championship, Bama in the rose bowl, or Washington in the title game last year? Please enlighten all of us, because rn it just sounds like major cope

It’s more safety Joel because if you land overweight your brakes aren’t going to slow you down before the end of the runway. Or they might get too hot and be a safety hazard. If they desperately had to land they would but if nothing else is emergently happening then that’s standard procedure
Alabama’s crooked referees missed the bus and that was a big mistake because they looked mortal without them.
Good One !!! LMAO 😂😂😂
Conference realignment turned the B1G and SEC into a gauntlet.
you could argue that 2 losses could be a norm for teams 7-11.
Wild weekend for football.
Don’t forget…No. 8 nearly lost to an unranked academic school.
Love the show, thank you! I barely even have time to watch my Huskies, let alone all the other games going on so appreciate it!
the weight lifting analogy was *perfect* well said! love joel klatt and gus johnson. the best duo in college football history.
Love the Teddy KGB reference " hanging, hanging around...chek, chek, chek" LOL😂❤
Go blue 🤷♂️
Sark showed them that.
Kirk Campbell is equally egregious. Both better be gone before next season. You live and learn, but hey, Jim Harbaugh sold out on Don Brown at one point in time.
U called it last week, U said that unsuspecting weekends like this past one usually results in major upsets.
Vandy outplayed and outcoached Bama. As a Sooner, our schedule is looking more optimistic just in one day. Rankings should shift massively early season bc they are based on nothing.
Joel is on fire. Anytime you can pull off a Teddy KGB reference, it's pure gold. 🔥
Joel giving a statistics review to describe this weekend, absolutely love it
Clemson’s loss doesn’t look so bad now Alabama lost a Vanderbilt
Hey Joel, first, love your show!
Air Force Pilot here, and yes, maximum recommended landing weight is a thing. Most large aircraft when fully fueled are too heavy to land after takeoff otherwise it could cause damage to the landing gear and airframe, so they wouldn't land right away unless there was some other issue more serious such as somebody in immediate need of medical attention or an engine fire. Hope that helps! Go Blue and Go Buffs!
Joe Klatt is the best in the business. PAY THIS MAN.
"Kid's got alligator blood..."
Hanging around, hanging around.

Nd loses to niu. Community bashes us. But what abt vandy? What bout Arkansas, what about Minnesota? This is one of the worst losses in the sports history. And you drop them to 7??? And we get dropped to 16.
Love your take on college football man! Appreciate all the hard work you put into your craft!
This 4-2-5 sucks so bad Joel. We’re gonna get lit up against other dual threat QBs
Didn't even watch 5 seconds of this upload before hitting the like button. Joel always giving that heat!
If the Buckeyes win at Oregon they'll be #1.
Agree !
And if Oregon wins, they should be 1.
After seeing michigan and Washington beat up Texas and alabama last year I think the big tens earned some credit and should probably be favored until the facts tell us otherwise.
If Texas wins they stay #1. SEC teams always gets the nod.
How he a top 5 wr and he just got his first TD last wk #2 on suckeyes
"Bama is still the kind of College Football" next week loses to Vandy haha 😂😂😂
Nico should have started last year over milton, he looked like a deer in front of headlights. Our oline isn’t as good as it needs to be and playcalling is too conservative. Let nico play some ball, the talent is there! That play where he rolled to his left was immaculate! We gotta let him make some more mistakes this year to take the next step next season.
y’all overhyped him in the offseason, eat your crow
@@GoatedAtNFS i didnt overhype anything, he only played one game last season. I was very concerned with their offense and oline all year, and lack of wanting Nico to get some more snaps cuz seniority of joe milton
I'm a buckeye fan and think Tennessee is a team with an upward trajectory. They learn from this and get better.
@@davehall6809 hopefully
The score was 27-17. They lost by 10pts Joel.
Iowa State is better than Tennessee. SEC bias
Targeting isn't targeting anymore
Amen, bingo on Miami and the Refs. Refs may be on Miami payroll. 2 weeks in a row, very questionable calls. Miami could easily have 2 defeats.
Losing to unranked teams and still ranked in top 10 is just crazy!!!!
“Upsets” was stuck in my head all last weekend…it started with mizzou
Def was anticipating this episode
Yes planes need to be a certain weight or they will not be able to stop in time on the runway. They still have enough fuel for the landing and a go around after burning it. In cases of an emergency after takeoff when they are fully loaded they can straight up dump fuel out the plane onto the ground.
LOOSING TO VANDERBILT IS UNACCEPTABLE 🤦♂️
It was 27-17 UW Michigan
"I would be remiss if I didn't talk about the nightcap"
Proceeds to talk about landing gears.
The AP poll this week is absolutely ridiculous and i genuinely have no idea how they cane up with it
While I can see why you navigate sports politics the way you do….. your comment on Michigan looking different than the last 3 years….. well… we all know why that is.
Hey Joel, I say do both!! Still give us these amazing videos and come coach QBs for the Maze n Bule!!! 👏🏽👏🏽〽️〽️
You we need it!! 👀
There not cheating now😅
How did michigan "cheat" against Penn state on the road, Maryland on the road, Ohio state, Iowa in the big ten championship, Bama in the rose bowl, or Washington in the title game last year? Please enlighten all of us, because rn it just sounds like major cope

Great show, Joel!
I don't think bama or Georgia is as good as everyone is telling them they are ...what if all them high school 5 stars aren't as good as some 3 or 4 stars
Great message! 👊🏿💯
People talk about so called SEC biases. The main reason is a team from the SEC has won nearly every championship in the last twenty years
We just watched the Game of the Year (if not Decade) Vandy v Alabama. That was Johnny Manzel suited up as a Commodore

That LT for the Gophers was great. My Trojans on the other hand gave Moss no time to throw. It was a mess😑
Georgia was the better team. Bama just had control of that game. SEC is not a safe conference right now lol
Coming from a Texas fan 🤘
28- 0 and the team with the 0 was the better team? No more whiskey for u
Lol
Joel went full Meg Ryan talking Nico
😂
Joel, Washington beat Michigan 27-17...OK?
Great show!!!
Comparing Bama football to little kids soccer might be the ultimate takedown
USC should be 5-0. Plain and simple, they’ve fumbled these 2 losses. I’m a Lincoln Riley fan, but his 4q play calling and game management has been horrible this season. Absolutely horrible.
USC also has a big BIG problem at LT.
I don’t buy this whole “USC ain’t ready for the physicality of the big 10” nonsense. There 2 losses were by a combined 10 points, and they blew out Wisconsin. They can absolutely compete here. They just have to stop shooting themselves in the foot
People play reckless as losing one game is not detrimental as before
