As a commercial aircraft mechanic for 37 years I believe I’m qualified to answer the overweight landing issue. Many of today’s large capacity aircraft carry all or the majority of their fuel in the wings and center of the structure. Most can carry the equivalent of the aircraft’s dry/empty weight in fuel load. All aircraft have a maximum weight limit for flight and landing. We’ve all seen wing flex when looking out a window. I’ve done plenty of inspections due to unusual conditions such as overweight landings. Some but not all aircraft can dump fuel overboard while flying. Most aviators use this as a last resort because of environmental concerns. Your crew handled it well. Apparently there were no emergency concerns they just had to get below the maximum fuel load for landing.
Also, as a former aircraft mechanic as well, a heavy landing weight can cause "hot brakes." The brakes are overheated due to having to be used for too long and too hard. When this happens the brakes can explode and do so quite dramatically.

Yeah I was curious to see the impact of the portal on top of NIL. It changes motivations completely. It used to be that you were blessed to get the scholarship and have hope for the league. Now players are making more money than they know what to do with and have scholarships. It's hard to get players to buy in when you give them the world already. There's nothing to work for. Parity seems to be back in college football.
Something else is that the transfer portal is allowing 2nd and 3rd year former 4 star guys who aren’t playing yet at a place like Bama go somewhere they can be an immediate starter at. The transfer portal is dispersing talent throughout the country more becuase players are not locked into where they committed to with harsh penalties on their career if they leave.

Can't wait for Joel to come up with a dozen reasons why Alabama is actually the best team ever when the playoff comes around and acts like losing to Vandy didn't happen
I’m a jet engine mechanic on the kc-135for the military, which is a Boeing 707 airframe, and the main concern is not a big explosion. The primary concern is landing gear failure because the aircraft is so heavy. When the aircraft is that heavy, the nose landing gear could collapse if the pilots don’t land perfectly because that gear isn’t made to take a bunch of weight. By far the easiest way to solve this is to just fly around and burn all of that extra weight. The other thing, and this is more of a guess, is that the extra weight in the wings, because that’s were most fuel tanks are stored in heavy aircraft, could cause structural failure if a hard landing occurred. That’s more speculation though as I have no experience with the structural integrity of an aircraft
I hated losing Kalen DeBoer as a Washington fan but It was a BREATH of fresh air to get rid of the Defensive staff. Washington has less talent/experience on Defense this year but they still play more consistently. KD is going to have to make some coaching changes on that side of the ball.
Bama has a different defensive staff than Deboer at Washington. The issue I think was more complacency and youth on D. Wommack isn't a bad D coordinator and has had great defenses at both South Alabama and Indiana, just needs time to develop players.
@@drm2364 That's true, but it all depends on factors we really don't know. Things like team chemistry, youth, and underestimating your opponent can absolutely cause games like these. We'll have to see how they perform 4-5 games down the road.
He should have transferred to A&M bc Ryan Day will never win a big game. His teams are not hard. They are entitled. Bama has a bunch of entitled kids too but Saban kept them accountable. Deboer may have excellent offenses but just like Brian Kelly he will never get the defense back to Saban standards and that’s not gonna fly in Tuscaloosa

I feel better about this loss than the win vs Minnesota. Minnesota felt lucky, this UW game the offense found an identity and actually moved the ball. In the end UW just made some great defensive plays!
As a UW fan I hated seeing Orji get replaced because in the end I want each player to have their opportunity. Tuttle was in a tough position. Loved that it was a clean game for the most part. Go Dawgs. Go Big Blue
WA was the betting favorite over Michigan, so it wasn't as big as surprise to those that have been paying attention to onfield performance of both teams. Michigan's ranking was too high and WA wasn't ranked at all, due to losing a couple of games in which they outplayed opponents but lost on last play of the game due to self-inflicted mistakes (too many penalties and missed FG's).
And if Oregon wins, they should be 1. After seeing michigan and Washington beat up Texas and alabama last year I think the big tens earned some credit and should probably be favored until the facts tell us otherwise.
The landing weight for the landing gear was a good straight by the pilot. If there was a landing gear issue, that means there could be a hydraulic which means you want to take out as many variables as possible in order to make a safe landing. The less weight on the plane means the less pressure on that hydraulic landing gear which means less of a possibility of the gear bottoming out and causing a skid, or worse a crash.
Is there concern that Michigan doesn’t even get to 6 wins? We still have Penn St, Ohio St, Indiana, Oregon as likely losses now with only Mich. St and Northwestern as teams that seem beatable right now.
I think with a better QB now, Michigan will play better on offense. If Tuttle started against Washington, it might’ve been a very different score at halftime. Defense however needs to figure things out. Especially the secondary.
We kind of knew Michigan offensively might be a mess this year given the QB situation and lack of talent at WR, but there is something fundamentally wrong with Michigan schematically and in terms of preparation on defense. Yes, we lost depth, but the fact we are playing as badly as we are when the defense was supposed to be the strength of this team points to a coaching issue. DC Martindale is failing, and the defensive secondary coach is as well. Both should be fired.
Sherrone Moore is mediocre at best. He got credit for babysitting in Harbaugh's absence last year and was given credit for the wins. He's not qualified to be head coach.
@@snapper_slapper harbaugh won 10 games his first year after michigan had won 10 games once in the previous 8 seasons. michigan is coming off a national championship and 3 straight playoff appearances - they should be more competitive
@jacksquat4140 Jim Harbaugh didn't seem to think so. JH was Moore's biggest supporter to take the reins. Moore has already proven he's an effective in-game coach. He out coached Ryan Day and James Franklin last year. In terms of running a program, though, he doesn't have a lot of experience. I think he will become a great coach, but it might take longer than we want. Hiring Martindale and passing over Clinkscale we can now see as a big mistake. Promoting Campbell to OC probably was a mistake too, but that's harder to tell at this point given that we haven't had a decent QB.
@@tr5932: Not having a quality quarterback and receiver corps is inexcusable at such an elite school. Harbaugh wagered Michgan's future for his own personal gain - with no eye on the future.
Hey Joel, first, love your show! Air Force Pilot here, and yes, maximum recommended landing weight is a thing. Most large aircraft when fully fueled are too heavy to land immediately after takeoff otherwise it could cause damage to the landing gear and airframe, so they wouldn't land right away unless there was some other issue more serious such as somebody in immediate need of medical attention or an engine fire for example. Hope that helps! Go Blue and Go Buffs!

@@timalan7406 I totally agree. The SEC has been all Saban. And the teams who won other than Bama, it's because they beat Saban. It's all come down to sabans Bama.
One of the big differences that this year is going to have and going forward is that the goal for the top teams is always the national championship and in the past a week like this might have ended the dream for these teams but with a 12 team playoff it’s more like the NFL And you can lose one or maybe even two games and still get in and as you said if the failure is causing you to improve, there is still a future
That wasn't a game of the year lol. Vandy beating a highly overrated Bama, who no longer plays defense was an upset but that is about it. Other than Texas the SEC just isn't very good this season.
In 2014, Ohio State lost their starting QB (Braxton Miller) in training camp. They lost to VT in week 2, then on to win the B1G, and beat Bama & Oregon to win the title as the 4 seed, in the first college football playoff. If that can happen a decade ago under the old format, 1-loss in a 12 team format is going to become the norm. Conference realignment turned the B1G and SEC into a gauntlet.

Fwiw, most of what he says is bs. But I like how much he loves college football. But fyi, the answer to last weekend is transfer players (4 of the 5 home teams that won had transfer QBs). Someone who does this professionally should be paying more attention. ;) But I like the show.

Former aircraft mechanic. If there’s a landing gear issue as a precaution they want to reduce the amount of stress/weight on the aircraft during landing. They CAN dump fuel but that can be a hazmat issue and require a cleanup. Easier to just fly in circles to burn fuel. Doesn’t hurt anymore and it’s just an extra 20-30 minutes to do so.
Or an extra 2 hours or so....Lol
The SEC bias is real. The only conference when their teams lose, they win in the polls. If any other team would have lost to Vanderbilt or Arkansas they would have a free fall in the polls. I predicted at the onset of NIL that this would become increasingly common. NIL at the current financial level deprives coaches of hungry players.

Hi Joel. Love the show!
Yes, an airplane has a max landing weight that may be less than the max takeoff weight. Landing overweight could cause the landing gear to snap do to the force from the touch down.
Losing to unranked teams and still ranked in top 10 is just crazy!!!!
Especially if after beating the #1 team they are still unranked
@@SNERFANyep this crazy, if you remember in 2021 Texas played Bama who was #1 and Texas was unranked, Texas lost by 1 point and then was ranked in the top 15😂

So we can’t trust Miami but we can trust Alabama (who have been in back to back shootouts and almost blew a lead like Cal), Tennessee, Michigan and USC? All who lost on the road against unranked conference opponents. Miami found a way to win on an upset Saturday, a lot of teams didn’t and yet Miami is ridiculed more.

Joel giving a statistics review to describe this weekend, absolutely love it
Can't wait for Joel to come up with a dozen reasons why Alabama is actually the best team ever when the playoff comes around and acts like losing to Vandy didn't happen
@@Dextrostatthey have 4 and 5 stars on the defense. They shouldn't be near as bad as they are.
@@drm2364 That's true, but it all depends on factors we really don't know. Things like team chemistry, youth, and underestimating your opponent can absolutely cause games like these. We'll have to see how they perform 4-5 games down the road.
@@drm2364they are also extremely young. A lot of bamas defense is starting freshman. Freshman have peaks and valleys in their performances.

When Bama hired Deboer they told him you cannot bring your Defensive staff

11:44 this is why Caleb downs left. He saw the structure of the D and said…. NOPE
He should have transferred to A&M bc Ryan Day will never win a big game. His teams are not hard. They are entitled. Bama has a bunch of entitled kids too but Saban kept them accountable. Nice introduction to put things in perspective...but it s time to talk about thoses games 😀
It certainly was Washington’s NC game. At least that the way they acted after the game.

@@ohioproud The SEC clearly isn't that great anymore. They don't play defense period and anybody with functioning eyeballs can see this now
@@Onetime614 I know that! I said it in jest.
As an ohio state fan, i cant overreact, even if we go beat Oregon in Eugene, in big games for some reason we forget how to play football

Give the guy a chance yall. It's his first full year as HC. What was Harbaughs first year like?

Exactly !!!
Conference realignment turned the B1G and SEC into a gauntlet.
you could argue that 2 losses could be a norm for teams 7-11.
