My main desk consists of 2 Martha Stewart 9 cubby units for legs, and on top a custom made kitchen counter. The latter wasn’t as expensive as it sounds. A friend of a friend knew someone who made custom kitchens for a living, and there’s always plenty of countertop material that goes to waste because it’s too small for most kitchens, but large enough for a craft desk. I had to wait a bit, but once he had a piece that was about 5 feet long, (and about 36” deep, to cover the width of the cubby units), he made it into a countertop for me for about $80. That was over a decade ago. I have an adjustable high chair, but I stand most of the time. Plenty of storage, as well as countertop space. I love these ikea videos, it’s like I’m at the store with you. I’m going to check out those smaller tables that can be used while sitting on a sofa.

I bought a kitchen table from Better Homes and Gardens at Walmart. It is one made to seat at least six people. It is white with clean lines and gives me a wide enough and deep enough space to work with. I like keeping my most used items on top of my desk. With the depth of the kitchen table I’m still left with plenty of craft space.

Also great tip that I used - I have various ones of their desk tops but then needed something mid-size to cover two 2x2 Kallax where they were in an L shape. If you get the big Lack coffee table, and then just don't put it together, it is exactly the right size and the table top is same depth as their other desk tops. Then I used the middle shelf part on top of another area. I used a leg for the 4th corner

A bit separate, I used their smallest Linmon desk top and their expandable legs to make a cutting station. I stood and pretended to use a trimmer while my husband measured my hands down to the floor, and we positioned the legs so the table top was that height. A horizontal light clamped to the back and voila, very easy trimmer station. Perfect for my height.
Underneath is a recycling box and a small rolling rack for 13x13 hanging folders for 12x12 paper since I don’t have all that much (I’m a card maker).

Thanks again for all these reviews. I have 2 LINNMON / ADILS next to each other for my 3 sewing/serger and coverlock. I prefer shorter Linmon, as I did move many times.

Great timing as I will be heading to IKEA tomorrow. It’s just over a 2 Hour drive for me and I want to make sure that I make the most out of my trip. I’ll do some extra measuring as watching your video, I started to have thoughts of additional organization ideas.
For my craft table, I purchased an unfinished door from Lowe’s/HD. I propped it up with a couple two drawer file cabinets. After a few years, I put two white, plastic rolling storage carts next to each file cabinet. It wasn’t pretty, but it worked. Plus, it was able to be rearranged anytime we had to move. I am replacing all of those with Kallax 2 x 2 storage units. So basically I am renovating a good portion of my craft space, but since I have had the set up for 15 to 20 years, I reckon it’s time to upgrade!😅

Several years ago, I saw in a scrapbooking magazine's organization issue an article for how to make a desk for under $200. Nothing to do with Ikea, either. Though I have nothing against Ikea! :) The desk was basically a piece of melamine on top of 2 wire drawer units like you would use in closet organization. So that's what I did, & I still use that. I got a full 4x8' sheet of melamine & my brother cut a piece to the size I needed. I forget what the drawer units cost, but it did end up being right around $200. The drawer units are similar to Elfa units at The Container Store, though I believe I got mine at Lowe's at the time. I'm not sure if they (Lowe's) sell those anymore. But for those you could buy a frame without drawers, then customize it with drawers of different depths. I think mine came as a package with the drawers and frame, though. I later added a mix of acrylic & mesh drawer units on top of my desk that are each about 12" high by 6" wide, then put another melamine shelf board on top of those for added storage. I've since added marker holders from Stamp 'n' Storage under the shelf. Since those are a bit taller than the drawers they flank, that gives me a little space on top of the small drawers for shallow items like my stamp scrubber. If I recall correctly, I was able to get enough melamine out of that sheet to make a work/storage table & some small display shelves as well. But that craft desk has worked out really well over the years. I doubt I would pay that relatively little now, but the idea is still an option, at least with the Elfa drawer units, and like I said, pretty easily customizable with drawer size & the size of the top. Not to mention durable, since the drawer frames & drawers are metal & the top is melamine. Anyway, thank you for sharing these ideas. Take care, Elisa, & have a wonderful day! :)

yup, that's what I have in my home studio. In our second location, I have an IKEA set up. Was thinking of replacing my open Elfa drawers with the closed IKEA Alex drawers. I hate the dust that gathers on the open shelving!

I have a desk from IKEA, set up with two Alex drawers. All white. If I could buy it all again I would have went with s as bamboo table top so it wasn’t all so bright white.

Omg i needed to see this video. I just got the grid top for my kids desks online to replace the gorgeous oak top we had (unfortunately it was damaged and they dont carry it anymore). I wasnt sure bc it was dizzying to my eyes and I was tempted to take it back but wasnt sure what other one I would get and it started to grow on me. But this vid helped me to really see the others and I think I will keep it.

This is such great timing! I’m planning my move of my work space to upstairs and taking my sit/stand desk up there which means room for a real craft desk and I totally forgot about the kitchen island option! I want a counter height desk to still sit/stand but plenty of room to craft. So excited to check out this option 🙌🏼

I have a kitchen table in my librario---art studio/library. About one third of it is for my desk top computer and two thirds is for my art. I saw in a magazine once where a lady had turned her garage into a big art studio and she had 3 or 4 work tables, a different kind of art or a different project on each table. So if something needed to dry, she moved to another table or if she wanted to work on another project. No movi g her stuff until she was ready. She moved herself! Doesn't that sound gteat?

I got a linmon years ago when they offered different widths, unfortunately they only one width now, so when considering adding stuff on top that needs to be taken into account. (Mine is 75cm, current is 60cm)
