  • If you're new to the Canon EOS R series of cameras the new features could be very confusing to begin with. The new autofocus system takes some getting used to but once configured it could help to improve the accuracy of your photography.
This tutorial is an in-depth look at the complete set up of the Canon R3 camera for Sports Photographers.

Interesting set up Matthew, the register/recall function I have assigned to my * button and I have enabled the subject tracking in that menu. When shooting team sports, such as football, I normally use the AF-ON button with single pt AF for 99% of the time. However, if I can isolate a player/manager or I'm shooting athletics, cricket, motorcycle racing, I use the * button which enables the AF to track the head of the target. It generally sticks quite well as long as the subject is not close to other potential targets in the frame. Recently I tried this with AF Case - Auto, rather than my usual Case 2 or 4, and I found that the subject tracking was much "stickier" on the Auto Case than the other 2. I used the set-up for hockey and I was pleasantly surprised at the improvement in the tracking.

Let’s say your shooting action and you suddenly have an off court portrait opportunity where you no longer need the 1/1600+ SS and desire the quick shot with a portrait preset. This is the only addition I would add to your guide/setup. otherwise, thank you for your run down!

Thanks for the comment. I would just change shooting modes or have another Custom Mode set up for that scenario. Or you could set up a Quick Menu in the green section of the Canon R series menu system to include Set Shutter Speed so that can be changed very quickly.
