Puppy Party Photo Shoot! Camera Tricks and Settings
Today is going to be a huge day as we head off to the other side of Tamborine Mountain to photograph a puppy party. I have all the gear with me today. The the R3, R5 and R6 along with the 70-200 lens, the 28-70, and also the 15-35. We had a lot of fun with these puppies and it was a good opportunity to test out the use the remote cameras while working with animals.
There was 13 puppies at the party. Can you believe it? 13 puppies running around. So with my setup i had planned to use two cameras, one with the 70-200 and another shooting remotely with the pocket wizards with the 15-35mm lens. Let's see how we got on.

Sports Photography - What's In My Bag?

A question I’m asked quite often is what gear do I use for shooting sports coverage especially from those who are just staring out in sports photography. Over the last year I’ve managed to get accreditation to many large sports events and there’s a lot of expensive gear in my bag, but don’t let that put you off because you can still do this on a smaller budget. It’s just knowing the right gear ...

The 400mm f2.8 is for professional sports, action and wildlife, and is essential for low light demanding situations that require a fast and bright aperture. The 400mm f2.8. It’s a fixed focal length lens meaning I can't zoom in or out, it’s fixed at 400mm, so you have to be very selective of your subject when deciding to get this out of the case. The 70-200 is part of my kit for its versatility and for fast action situations such sports, wildlife, but it's also a great lens for portraits and even for some landscapes. Canon released their updated f2.8 RF70-200 way back in 2019. It was slightly controversial at the time as they removed the internal zoom feature found on most 70-200 lenses. The Canon RF200-800mm f/6.3-f/9 - Who Is This Lens For?
Do you find 2.8 soft? I’m a little surprised that I need to stop down to 5.6 for decent sharpness.
Excellent review. I appreciate that you showed some great photos of wildlife, zoos, and sports. Most reviewers of this lens concentrate on portraits and weddings.
On my R6 Mark, there is a setting called Whole Area Tracking Eye AF, which I set to false. This limits face tracking to where my AF point is. I then use dynamic AF with 4 additional points, and this setup works wonderfully for soccer and rugby. Does anyone else use it this way?
Great video, i watched til the end, deserves more then 5k views

THANKS MUCH!! You have this set to function 2 if I can ask what are custom 1 and 3 set to..... anyone can add a comment just asking to best use or something that I have not thought about thanks
@@DavidJones-iq8hp great question. I have changed my set up now. I have C1 set for timelapse so don’t have to change so many settings every-time. C2 is set to shutter priority but at a lower shutter speed for motion blur and panning effects. C3 is now set to FV mode which is now my main shooting mode for sports and wildlife. Hope that helps.
Just starting to use PM, after you ingest from the SD card how do you then take it to editing with like Lightroom or photoshop before returning it to PM to send via FTP hope that makes sense
Hi thanks for the comment. In the file menu of PM select Settings (Mac) or Preferences (Windows) then scroll down to Launching. From there you'll be able to assign your default editing application. I use Photoshop as i'm mostly only cropping and doing small edits on my jpeg files. If you're editing RAW then maybe you'd want to use Lightroom. Then from within PM you can select an image or group of images, right click to Edit photo with or Edit selected photos with. Or just press CMD/CNTR E.
Great video, used this to help setup my Canon R1 as there isn't any good sports setup videos for that camera. Thanks for sharing this!
Glad the video helped you setup your camera!
Nice! The R3 is such a great camera. Not used the RF100-500 since the EF100-400ii is fine for me. Apparently Canon have patents for a slighter faster but internal zoom variant with 600mm or so on the long end. Although I’m waiting for a 800mm zoom that’s L
Thanks for the comment and for sharing the info!
Love the channel. Have you had a chance to use the R1 since the launch to give an updated review? I’m on the fence about getting one or going with an R3 for sports. I currently have an R5, R6, & R5ii. I’m thinking of trading in my R6 to use the money for an R1 or R3. I want better results in the dim high school stadiums I usually shoot at. However, I also hear that it’s better to get an R5ii than an R3. Do you have an opinion about that? Any recommendations you might suggest on what to do with an R6. To throw another wrench in the question, what about the R6iii and rumors of an R3ii coming in 2025?
Good question. The R3 is a beast of a camera but it doesn't have the pre-burst option. That's probably the only thing i'd want to see added to the R3. everything else is fine and will be fine for 5-10 years at least. The R1 looks amazing, i haven't used one as yet apart from the demo in the store. But will it actually help take better photos. Probably not so is it worth the justification to pay the extra money. The same can be said for the R5. When i bought the R5 it was a significant step up from DSLR cameras and from Micro Four Thirds. Is it helping me take better photos. No, it's allowing me to take photos i was simply unable to capture using other cameras. That's the difference. For me only the pre-burst feature will allow you be capture photos you we're unable to capture before. The R6 MK11 has that feature so maybe save the money on an R1 and get the R6 MK11. I'm finding all new mirrorless cameras have very small incremental updates so it's not worth upgrading every time. I would however upgrade the R6 MK1 to a R6 MK11. Hope that helps.
Thank you, this is what I’ve been trying to figure out on my own. I too shoot sports but I’ve been wanting this mainly for volleyball. Every time there is a point scored, the players usually huddle up and either congratulate each other or refocus on their defense, therefore I take this opportunity to take a group shot. Since it happens so quick, I sometimes miss it or I accidentally leave the settings to slower shutter and higher aperture reading then I it takes me a minute to catch my mistakes once I’m back shooting the action (the pics are blurry). Since this will definitely help. Now the big question, is there a way to lower the fps while shooting in this setting? Using the 30 fps in the R5ii gives me a lot of extra useless pics to review. Thank you for the information!
Thanks for the comment. I don't think there is a way to control the FPS using the recall all function. You could set up a separate Custom Shooting Mode using C1, C2 or C3 and set the burst mode to shoot slower. Hope that helps.
Hi Matthew, I had to laugh when I saw the pocket wizards. I've been using them for so long. WRC rallying for both remote cameras and flash. Plus GAA Football and Hurling here in Ireland before covid and since then for covering live music concerts. They are bullet proof!
Thanks for the comment. Those little devices are so useful. But there have been occasions when they didn't fire. Batteries and connections were all fine. Just wondering if you've ever had situations when they failed to work properly?
Yes, from time to time. Firstly it's very important I've found to only use the pocketwizard triggering cable. There are many cheaper brands but they can give misfires, particularly when the unit is connected to the camera but is not placed in the hotshoe example: :when I was shooting rallying I liked to use fill flash. Having the speedlight on top of the camera was not always the best place so I'd fit a flash trigger in the hotshoe and place 1,2 or sometimes 3 speedlights in the best places to light up both cars and the crowd...a little light shooting into the crowd was nice. I found that only their own brand of cable was best when the unit was not in the hotshoe. This worked well. Of course being outside the weather i.e. rain, snow, frost can f--k things up. Covering the camera, lens and unit from the rain but again being able to have the pocketwizard not in the hotshoe helps as I could completely protect the camera and run the cable and unit to the best position possible for signal and setup. This work ok. Now that I'm shooting live music having so much electronics (close by) I think can cause problems but all in all I can get good results. Again using their own cables is important. As flssh is a no go the units can be placed in the hotshoe so that helps. If the concert is outside the weather comes into play again. So covering is important. My biggest issue related to shooting music is when placing a camera overhead of the stage. The camera is placed in the lighting rig and requires me to position it there hours in advance so it needs to be in the corect position and with the correct exposure settings for the time of the gig. This has become easier over the last number of years as I can connect to the camera with my phone and change the settings as required
@@TrevorMcGrathPhotography Thanks so much for this information. It's possible other remote devices interfered with mine. I will have to do a some tests but thanks again for the invaluable info and good luck for the future.
Really good advice thankyou.
Glad you found it useful.
Hi Matthew. Your channel is very good. Your reviews are good but may I suggest that you limit the background music. I have been a professional editor for 40 years (yes 40!) so i think this qualifies my opinion. Please lower and or use the music selectively. A bit here and there between your good narration. I’m sorry to make any criticism as I value your very good reviews but I am finding it hard to concentrate. 🙂
Thanks for the feedback!
Hi Matt, so I was setting up my R5 using this video...I followed your instructions and have everything set up the way you got it...OH NO...I am having an issue...!!! when you are showing how to move from TV to AV to ISO (at 15:32 on)...my camera will not move to the one that I want...it seems to stay in Tv Mode while the AV and ISO are in Auto. I am unable to move between the 3...did I miss a step ?
Hi Don. Thanks for the comment. The only thing i can think of is are you using the right scroll wheel to scroll across to Tv, Av and ISO?
@@mstarling79 Thanks for the quick reply! Ahhh, I figured it out....
I was there ago and got one or two decent photos of a couple of dolphins using a 90D and the EF 100-400 mkii. Must have deleted over a hundred duds. I'm going back next week with a new R6 mkii. I still have the 100-400 (with converter). Do you think I should use a 1.4x extender to make up for the loss of crop factor from the 90D, or should I just go 'au naturel'?
Hi thanks for the comment. If you have enough light then maybe the teleconverter will help to get a bit closer. You'll need extremely fast shutter speeds so as long as there's good light conditions then it's worth a go.
Not easy!
Not easy at all. The auto focus really helps.
The lens is fantastic! It focuses quickly and takes amazing pictures, and video (you may checkout on my channel). But did you know it doesn’t work with 95mm snap-on matte boxes? I’ve got the 95mm Small Rig Mini Matte Box and the Came TV MB-95. I even checked with Came TV Europe before buying, and they assured me it would fit, but the lens diameter is just a bit larger than both matte boxes. Do you have any matte box suggestions? If this is the case, it looks like I can’t attach any matte box to this lens. Even larger diameter matte boxes that use a 95mm ring adapter won’t fit since the lens is too wide for the 95mm hole of the adapters. It’s surprising that Canon dropped the ball on this. I’ll reach out to them. No issues with any other 95mm screw-on filters, though. Thanks!
Hi Eril. Great video work! I don't have any matte boxes so i'm unable to help.
@@mstarling79 Appreciate it. I just followed you on IG. Stay safe.
I owned the EF 400mm IS Mark I, and it was a fantastic lens. Heavy. I moved to 400mm f4 DO II and that was a fantastic lens. Now I shoot the 200-400mm f4. And I own a 600mm f4 IS II. But I still look longingly for another 400mm f2.8. An RF version would be nice...
Thanks for the comment. I Hope you get the RF lens soon.
Nice vid mate ive been shooting pro sports news events for last 35 years last 10 or so with 1dx bodies my pref is always single spot focussing that way i choose whats in focus at all times. Ive just boight a used R3 should arrive next week lookong forward to seeing the huge step up in performance from what i consider is still an awesome 1dx system. Liked and subbed
Glad you liked the video. You'll love the R3. I still see a lot pf people using the 1Dx and also the Nikon D5 and D850. Those cameras are tried and tested for sports. The autofocus is a game changer. But i still have a single point focus option available as the AF doesn't always do what you want. Good luck with it.
@mstarling79 spot on mate picking up the R3 tmorra can't wait cheers
Great video! Since you are using folders quite a bit you might wanna check the “../“ combination for sub folders in uploads window and other places where you manually set sub folders for each job. Basically this makes pm go level up from your raw folder and make “uploads” folder next to it automatically
Thanks for the tip! I'll give it a try!
@@mstarling79 just type "../uploads" in folder name :) Also ../../uploads would also work, goin 2 levels up
All I can say, is hope your channel blows up.
Thanks! I really appreciate your support.
Hello! What do you recommend between the Canon RF 400mm f2.8 vs 600 mm f4 for safari? I'm carrying two bodies and planning to put either the 24-105 f2.8 or 100-300 f2.8 on the second body!
Hi thanks for the comment. The 400mm for me is a better choice because of the f2.8 aperture. If i had the money i would also get the 100-300 f2.8. Travelling with two big white lenses will be a struggle to be honest. So maybe the wider lens option would be a better choice if you intend on using the 400mm.
Hi Matthew, thank you for such an informative video. In January, I have a trip to Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda and will go on a safari in most of the National Parks, including the Serengeti, Masai Mara, Amboseli, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire, as well as the Gorilla Trekk in the Bwindi National Park. I own a Sony A7RV (full frame, 61 MP) for stills and a Sony FX30 (APSC) for video. I am struggling to decide whether to buy the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 and maybe compensate for an extra reach with the APSC-Mode when needed or to buy the 200-600 f/5.6-6.3. I do mostly landscape photography and already own a 70-200 f/2.8. I do have some concerns about weight, versatility, and usability in the future with the lens I would acquire. Which one would you recommend? Would you consider the 100-400 focal length limited for safaris in the parks I mentioned?
Hi thank for the comment. If you have a 70-200 already then i would probably go with the 200-600mm lens. It's much larger to carry but with 600mm focal range and the 61mp sensor you'll have a huge range. I used a 100-400 micro four thirds lens which gave me 200-800mm equivalent zoom range but at around f11. I think the 200-600 range would give amazing results. For me there is already an overlap with the 70-200 and 100-400. But the 100-400 wouldn't be that limiting especially with a 61mp sensor. You could also use the 1.4x teleconverter. I used the 400mm lens with the R5 which has a 45mp sensor and was overall quite pleased with the results. The more zoom range you have the more environmental aspects you'll need to consider such as dust and heat haze. That can ruin your images. The 100-400 is significantly lighter and smaller than the 200-600. It's a tough one to advise on. You really need to test those lenses out before purchasing.
Absolutely brilliant photographer, and thanks for sharing your knowledge
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi, which setup did you use for the 'drone like' aerial shots of the vehicle?
Hi thanks for the comment. This was just an Insta 360 camera on a very long pole. Not everyone is a fan of this type of thing but it produces some interesting angles and shots. Hope that helps.
What lens foot do you recommend?
Thanks for the comment. I ended up buying the iShoot Tripod Mount Ring Base Support. As this was right for my particular set up. There are several others available just depends on how you want to mount the lens to a tripod or monopod. It's working ok so far just need to check the tightness of the screws before use.
Great video, very informative. The one question I would ask someone shopping for a safari camera is how much experience do you have? If the answer is I use my phone camera then I would suggest and entry level camera that has good auto and scene modes as that kind of trip is not well suited for learning photography and they will struggle with advanced gear.
Thanks for the comment. I think for any inexperienced photographers that want something better than a phone but not the technicalities of a fully functional DSLR or mirrorless camera then i would suggest something like the Lumix FZ1000 bridge camera. Infinitely better than a smartphone and can be used quite well in auto mode.
@mstarling79 l agree. I use the FZ80 for wildlife photography and get nice results under optimal lighting conditions.
@ yes another great option. I’ve used LUMIX bridge camera quite often. Good all round capabilities.
variables would make it even quicker.
Thanks for the info

How do you go about applying the code in each picture? Do you need to enter the code one by one or can they be done in bulk?
Hi Thanks for the comment. You can enter the codes individually on each photo but you can copy and paste the meta data on to other photos. So once you've entered codes on to one photo it can be applied to others quickly.
Did you have ND filters on for the Timelapse’s too? Thank you 🙏🏽
Hi thanks for the comment. I didn't use ND filters for this tutorial. But they could be used. I'm trying to set up an automated system to avoid having to touch the camera or lens to make incremental adjustments. It's not always ideal but then so is knocking the camera slightly while turning the ND filter.
Hi Matthew, I am thinking OM 100-400 for Safari or 40-150 f2.8 + x2 converter, what is your suggestion? and what is the another focal length lens you would like to suggest for Safari.
Hi Andy. I think they would both be more than good enough. The advantage with the 40-150mm is the constant aperture of f2.8 (5.6 full frame equivalent). With the 2x converter it'll give you a huge focal distance of 160-600mm at f5.6 (f11 full frame equivalent). However, the 100-400mm is a full frame equivalent of 200-800mm with a variable aperture of f5-6.3 (f10-13 FFE). There's not much in it to be honest. The 40-150 has that PRO build quality and with the 2x converter is probably more versatile. If budget is a concern then just use your mobile camera for any wide shots. If you're able to check the pre-owned section or discount sales in store for an extra body and cheap wide lens such as an 8mm or 12mm MFT lens (16mm or 24mm FFE). The Olympus and Panasonic lenses are so small and cheap you'll hardly notice them when travelling. Hope that helps and enjoy the Safari trip.
@ thank you Matthew!👍🏻
Thanks for sharing your photography knowledge
My pleasure! Thanks for viewing.
Hi Matthew, just wondering which laptop plateau you are using and how do you attach this to your bag?
Hi thanks for the comment. That was just a cheap laptop stand from Kmart. It slides under the handle of the bag.
Thoughts on 15-35 vs 10-20? Wide angle is my only hole (although I do have 16 f2.8) in my lens lineup?
I’ve not used the 10-20mm but I know it’s an f4 lens. For wide shots of sports stadiums I’m usually at f8 so f4 is definitely not an issue. With the 15-35 I’m also usually panning sequentially in portrait mode to get those super wide looking shots so by using a 10mm aspherical lens would save a lot of time. Hope that helps.
@ thank you!
Hi Matthew thanks for the great Video. I’m flying to South Africa in February and looking for the ideal equipment to bring. But I still feel kinda indecisive. I own a Sony A7 mark 3 and a Tamron 28-75 f2.8. I’m currently looking between the Sony 70-200 f2.8, Sony 100-400, Sony 200-600. or I’ll scrap my tamron for most of the day and just run the Sigma 60-600. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Sebastian. The 60-600 would probably cover the focal range you need and as you’ll be in a vehicle you won’t be carrying it everywhere so the weight won’t be an issue. Anything wider than 60mm you could just use your phone camera if you really had to. If there is time then maybe you could change lenses to go wider.
This is a really well done video. I’ve shot sports for years and still learned from your video. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I learned that I’ve shot several games at 1.6 crop by mistake. Have no idea how that happened but if I hadn’t gone through your video I wouldn’t have noticed. Unfortunate bc I’m not happy with that. Fortunate bc it is now fixed. Quick question. You mention in another comment about changing modes when a different situation occurs quickly. Do you find that easy to do? Thanks.
Thanks for taking the time to view the video and for the comment. It's a constant learning curve. I can change modes fairly quickly but it does take some practice. It's really down to muscle memory and being familiar with your camera. If i change cameras i do struggle a bit.
love this video and helped a lot. did I saw this correctly, that you have all the A-League-Teams in one sheet for the code replacements? I made lists for every single team but I guess it is much more convenient to have on list with all teams (and of course different codes for teams with the same initials) and also the basic stuff like referee, goalkeeper, forward and so on
Hi Thanks so much for the comment. I usually keep all the teams in one file and just make sure they have different codes. That way i'm not likely to have the wrong file loaded and have consistent set of codes . But it doesn't really matter. It's up to you how you do things.

Have you tried the focus where you point your eye?
Hi John. I have a few times and i found it to be a bit unreliable. Maybe i need to calibrate it better.
Very nice video, a lot of work
Thank you very much!
Terrific video, if I wanted to configure C1 for these settings and C2 for street photography/general purpose travel, what changes would you make in settings, autofocus, etc.?
Thanks for the comment. I think for street or travel photography i would be trying to control the ISO to be as low as possible to get cleaner images. The autofocus settings might work better in the general purpose mode.
Great Info. I have been using PM for filing of images. Is great tool for photographer.
Glad it was helpful!
Very Good info. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent tutorial. When you edit the photos in PS, do you modify the original image? That code replacement file looks hectic 😀
Hi Matthew. I would edit the original file but then while sending the image via FTP PM then makes a copy which is a scaled down or deduced size version. You could set up so you're working in a way which is non-destructive to the original image. But you'd still have the originals on the memory cards.
@mstarling79 thank you mate. I guess speed is the important factor when you have to file. And as you said you’ve still got the original on memory cards. Your Photomechanic template looks amazing
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
I own the canon RF 400mm 2.8 L IS USM lens and am looking for a hard shell case. Could you recommend one? Thanks!
Yes, definitely. I bought the Nanuk 960 waterproof case. That seems to be working well so far. But the Pelican cases are also very good.
